Cloth Is All “Cloth is to the African what monuments are to Westerners.” - El Anatsui, Ghanaian sculptor. The ‘V&A’s' blockbuster exhibition, 'Africa Fashion' opened July 2, 2022. This landmark event celebrates the irresistible creativity, ingenuity and unstoppable global impact of contemporary African fashions - and will be the UK’s most extensive exhibition on the topic to date. Over 250 objects, drawn from the personal archives of a selection of iconic mid-twentieth century and influential contemporary African fashion creatives, hang alongside textiles and photographs from the ‘V&A’s’ collection. 45 designers from over 20 countries across the continent are featured. There is a selection of garments on show from Shade Thomas-Fahm, Chris Seydou, Kofi Ansah and Alphadi, marking the first time their work will be shown in a London museum. The exhibition also celebrates influential contemporary African fashion creatives including Imane Ayissi, IAMISIGO, Moshions, Thebe Magugu and Sindiso Khumalo, showcasing objects and stories behind them alongside personal insights from the designers, together with sketches, editorial spreads, photographs, film and catwalk footage. 'Africa Fashion' will explore how fashion is an integral part of African culture historically, also looking at the work of contemporary designers, stylists and photographers working in the continent today and the impact that this new wave of creatives are having globally. ‘Africa Fashion’, ‘V&A’ until April 26, 2023. ‘The Trench’ by ‘Maison ARTC’, the label set up by Marrakech-based designer Artsi Ifrah. #neonurchin #neonurchinblog #dedicatedtothethingswelove #suzyurchin #ollyurchin #art #music #photography #fashion #film #design #words #pictures #love #creativity #groundbreaking #diaspora #contemporarydesigners #rachidibissiriou #sanlésory #seydoukeïta #alphadi #shadethomasfahm #richmnisi #orangeculture #sindisokhumalo #drchristinechecinska #christinechecinska #vam #africafashion (at Victoria and Albert Museum) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfqhnHOI-b8/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Cloth Is All Over 250 objects, including new acquisitions highlight the creativity of African fashion creatives and the global influence of diasporic trends over a 70 year period. Celebrating the originality and variety of African fashion designers in the wake of the continent’s liberation through to the present day, this major exhibition at the ‘V&A’ has been two years in development. Preparations for the showcase included a call out for rare designs, family portraits from the liberation years and pieces of clothing connected to personal stories, additions that now sit alongside photographs and textiles from the museum’s pre-existing collections. Exploring the vibrancy and far-reaching influence of the continent’s fashion scene ‘Africa Fashion’ highlights a wellspring of creativity and innovation despite centuries of colonisation and political shifts. The exhibition reveals the role of music and art in Africa’s cultural renaissance, fashion trends and the ground-breaking work of a new generation of stylists, designers and photographers across Africa. ‘Africa Fashion’ demonstrates how these creatives are transforming global fashions. ‘Africa Fashion’, ‘V&A’ until April 26, 2023.
