I was at Convocation this past weekend too and honestly it was super great, however, I have many thoughts on this. I’m like 24 so idk if my opinion is 100% in line with teenagers but here it is none the less.

First of all, branding. For some reason the Pagan community and Graphic Design are not friends. I think that something huge that would help is just like, making the websites, adds, pamphlets, brochures, everything, just look better. These conventions need to hire a graphic designer with contemporary taste rather than the like, shitty ancient pagan graphic bullshit. No offense, it’s just bad and younger people theses days are used to highly aesthetisized marketing.

Secondly, I think Convocation really tried hard at this but having more workshops geared toward younger people. (They did really great for young kids which was awesome) Or like meet and greets for them or something? Idk, I hung out with an ancient group of British “Hard Gards” all weekend because I love them and they treat me like their own, but none of them are younger than 40 or so? And I think a huge part of that is because meeting people is intimidating, especially in communities like ours. Sometimes hard to jump into things I guess. I do have to say that EVERYONE that I met was incredibly friendly and approachable.

I think the last thing I would suggest is to specifically advertise to a younger demographic. I searched the Convocation tag on tumblr and didn’t find a single post. It can’t just be like this “if you know about it then you know and if you don’t, you don’t” kinda deal, which I feel like a lot of these conventions are.

Overall I would strongly suggest that the people who can go to them do. They are for the most part an absolute wealth of knowledge and there are classes and workshops for pretty much anything you can think of. Additionally it’s just a really good experience (particularly for people who mostly practice alone) and opportunity to meet other people in the community which can sometimes be hard since we all tend to remain somewhat hidden.

Tumblr Witches: Gathering Input

In the last two weeks I was at PantheaCon (San Jose, CA) and ConVocation (Detroit) - for those unfamiliar with these events, they are fairly large-scale conventions for Pagans/Witches/Magic Practitioners of varying paths, usually with 1-3K people in attendance.  There are workshops, rituals, shopping, social events, etc.  There are folks from a wide variety of paths, backgrounds, experience levels, and ages - yet I heard at both events: “what do we do to draw in the younger generations? (especially teens through 20-somethings). Or the statement that younger folks “aren’t interested.”  I think that’s bullshit, especially when it seems that this age group is keen on experiences and connecting with others in safe, comfortable environments - and it’s clearly apparent at fan-based events/conventions.  Maybe the issue is that information about conventions just isn’t reaching as far as producers think it is. I’m sure travel/expense is also a factor, but I’d really love to hear more from young Witches, Pagans and other practitioners about your thoughts on attending conventions.  Including: -are you interested in gatherings? -what are you looking to learn or experience the most? -what are the major concerns/issues you have that may prevent you from attending?  Please reblog - and thank you for your thoughts!
