Do you have a tu-TORIEL on how to make pixel art?

I am definitely not making an outright tutorial, I think you're better off learning from someone who didn't go 5 whole years without making a single sprite until last month jgfhsgd

but I can at least share my process and hope that helps a little! since I didn't make a sprite for Monster Kid with the rest of my Swap MH dialogue sprites, I'll make one just for this post ✨

firstly I stick with using my tablet and SAI like the rest of my art since SAI has a pixel brush and layers are nice, but Back In The Day™ a mouse and MS Paint worked just fine for me. I know specific spriting art programs exist, but I've never looked into any so I can't speak for those.

before starting any sprites: references are key, especially for a specific style and an official character! for this I grabbed some of my own art, Monster Kid's battle sprites, and both their UT and DR overworld sprites - even though overworld sprites are a different style, having more examples of how a design gets condensed into smaller forms can still be useful.

(unrelated but as I put these refs together I only now realised that MK's bigger eye marking isn't on the same side between their UT and DR versions. toby why)

anyway the base sprites don't take me long to make, so rather than explain everything for ages I'll just show each step:

I uh, don't feel qualified to give out proper tips about pixel art, besides real basic stuff like mixing pixel scales isn't gonna look good. like the UT red soul sprite is iconic but the mismatched pixel sizes cause me Emotional Distress:

Remember when I posted Build Tiger last year during the Lunar New Year and stuff?

Tried doing that again this year with Team Rabbits from Majestic Prince (’coz year of the Rabbit or whatever) but could only get as far as Gold-4 because of course that little doucheboy was my go-to. Wanted to start with Black-6 but figured that I respected Ange Kuroki too much and Gold-4 was only gonna be my warmup sketch. Also yea Majestic Prince is kind of my guilty pleasure show, borderline a problematic fave, ik, but I enjoyed it, it’s got a banger opening, cool enby rep (Ange ! ! ! But also I think I saw a post on them being a somewhat problematic character somewhere? Maybe? Idk, but back when I first came out Ange was my comfort character so what the hell), and I liked the mecha designs for what they were, specifically Gold-4′s head gimmick was always the coolest thing ever, hence using the robot as a “warmup sketch” that spiralled out of control.

That did not turn out thataway and I got horrid artblock when it came to fanart for a hot minute and so I just didn’t post the WIP because I wanted to add the rest of the team. Finally got tired enough to post what I got now because I am in a horrid spiral and it’s wonderful over here. Fun fact, this account was originally intended as a reading blog with only a spoonful of art on the side and then life happened and now it’s whatever this is. I might post more going forward, or I might not, we’ll see. Yes I know I’m about a month late for Lunar New Year but we can’t all be perfect, eh?

Not my style! I don't really like either animation types and it just seems like I'm not in the audience anymore. That's totally chill, but it just doesn't grab me!

Nope! But I did see a compilation called Minty Being Autistic for Six Minutes Straight that I loved. she's perfect.

Can’t believe its been 4 years since these turtles graced my TV screen at the ripe age of 11. 

Coming across Rise for the first time felt magical. I've never seen anything like it before, or at least, not on an animated series on TV. The quality of the animation, the art style, the new cast voicing the turtles I grew up with, the new interpretation, sure it was different but it was just the coolest thing ever to me at the time.

I didn't have access to the internet or social media at the time, so my love for this show was pure and unconditional.

Rise completely changed my view on what animation as a medium could do, especially for a serial TV show. It inspired me to keep working harder, both in terms of its writing style and its visual presentation. Sure I wasn't very good at it, but it set an example for me. Especially at the time when I was so engrossed in wanting to make my own animated TV series with my own original characters.

Outside of inspiration, it was also a source of comfort. The turtles felt like my friends, and their adventures were always so entertaining that I imagined myself being there alongside them. I knew that they were always there when I was having a bad day, I'd just turn on the TV, hope Rise was on, and let all my problems fade away.

As a queer and neurodivergent kid who always felt isolated and out of place, The turtles helped me feel less alone. I knew they wouldn't judge me for being weird or different because they were weird and different in their own ways too.

Sure you could point out the fact that it was because they were mutated turtles to be the weird trait, but to me, it felt more about what was on the inside.

The world will see mutants first, and beings with thoughts and feelings second.

Yet even after society shuns you, endangering you for what you are,

You will find joy and solace with your kin.

Blood-related or not.

Mutant or Human.

So in different scenes, especially in the endings of every episode of the first season, like during the credits, you probably noticed that the way the art style looks changes. It gets streaky and kind of blurred and textured and it kind of looks like paint.

Well guess what. It IS paint. Actual real paint.

The technique is called paint-on-glass animation, and it’s a really rare kind of animation. Like you NEVER see it it's so rare.

To make paint-on-glass animations, you need to take a slow drying kind of paint, (most people use oil or gouache), apply it to a smooth surface like glass or a whiteboard, and move it around into the different scenes before it dries.

It SOUNDS easy but it absolutely is not. The reason that it’s so rare is that it’s super labor intensive and difficult to do. I've tried to use it maybe twice and it’s genuinely so frustrating and hard. You have to get every try perfect because it’s so hard to reverse the work you’ve already done, and you’re constantly in a race against time. Even though they paint the animators use is slow drying, painting even one slide is so time consuming that it dries anyways.

The paint can’t be too wet or it’ll smear and blend too much, and it can’t be too dry for obvious reasons. Paint-on-glass animation is HARD and I’m so in awe of anyone who can do it well.

Mob Psycho doesn't just have it as a one-off thing, they use it MULTIPLE times, and the ending scenes with it are about 90 minutes. That's HOURS of intensive, detailed work. You can tell exactly how much love and dedication went into this show.

Oh and from what I've read, all of the paint-on-glass animation they used in Mob Psycho was done by a woman named Miyo Sato. ONE PERSON. ONE PERSON DID ALL OF THAT. ARE YOU JOKING? THATS INCREDIBLE.

When I say she was painting each scene on a glass frame by herself and she actively had to physically move everyone and everything in the scenes around I'm not joking. That is serious dedication and love and I love this show and all of the animators so much you don't understand.

OH AND DID I MENTION THAT SHE HAD TO ANIMATE MOB AND REIGEN WALKING MULTIPLE TIMES? BECAUSE SHE DID. Do you know how hard it is to make that look right in NORMAL animation? SO HARD. MIYO SATO I LOVE YOU YOURE SO IMPRESSIVE.
