Dream 09.07.20
I was back in the house that I grew up in.
I walked into my parents’ room and saw a girl I knew from college, we both had been in the college’s leadership club. I asked why she was there, apparently she was going to be an exchange student somewhere but had to retake her ID picture without her false eyelashes on. They were being extra strict because her family roots were in the middle east. I grimaced at hearing that because of the blatant racism behind the decision. She was staying at my place until the morning because of that.
I then went to my room, in search for my parents. I wanted to stress to them the importance of... not fighting. not yelling. not acting up while the girl was here. She was a nice girl and would never mean any harm by it but I knew she was close to other people who were not as nice and I didn’t want them gossiping about my family situation.
In my room I found my sister and my cousin H. I was surprised to see my cousin there. Apparently she was going to be an exchange student here in the U.S. and would be staying with us for awhile. She would be sharing the bed with my sister and I would have to sleep on the floor. I didn’t have it in me to argue so I went to go look for my parents in the other rooms of the house.
I found my mom in the living room, making her way to the kitchen and explained the situation with the college girl and mom agreed to be on her best behavior.
I saw dad in the garage room and tried explaining it to him as well but he cut me off, not wanting to hear me talk and walked into the kitchen, not wearing a shirt. The college girl was sitting in the kitchen table which gave him a shock since he hadnt listened to me and didn’t know about her being there.
“Who are you?” he blustered. I came up behind him explaining to him.
I then walked back through the living room to the small hallway that connected the bedrooms. My sister was in the hallway, a pile of books surrounding her. She was organizing them, seeing which ones we would be giving away and which ones she had yet to read, etc.
My cousin was curious and so I talked to her about how my sister was like me, we both loved books and once we started reading them we couldn’t stop.
Mom told my sister to do some stuff and my sister didn’t want to listen which made them get into an argument. I followed them trying to get them to stop arguing because the college girl I knew was still in the house. We all ended up in the garage where my sister and mom were yelling at the top of the lungs but then something was said that broke their argument and they ended up laughing and somehow everything was okay? I was so confused. The college girl saw it all though which put me in a bad mood because I knew everyone in college would soon know. Giving up and just wanting to sleep, I headed to my room, disgruntled enough at my sister to tell her I was going to be in the bed and she would have to take the floor.
I climbed in the bed, sharing it with my cousin. My brother came in, and he was his little elementary self again and he wanted to share the bed with us. My cousin was a bit wary because she was aware of his bed wetting problem. I got defensive because I knew how self conscious my little brother was about it and told her that he was wearing his pull ups and that it was something he couldn’t help and that the way my parents handled it didn’t help.
We all fell asleep.
The next morning I got up and walked towards the front door, planning on opening it up to let some outside light come into the living room. Beside the door was this pole and wrapped around it were three snakes, tied into knots and stacked one on top of another. The top snake was a middle size and it was a copperhead. The middle snake was tiny and was green. The snake at the bottom was the biggest of the bunch and was a bright blue color. Their eyes were all closed. I jumped at the sight of them and yelled.
My sister came up behind me. “Oh, yeah. I forgot about those. They’re dead. Mom told me to dispose of them yesterday but I was tired so I thought they could wait until the morning.” She opened the door and took a step outside.
I was about to ask her why she would wait and leave such dangerous things inside the house (I didn’t care that they were dead) when I saw them move.
“They’re not dead!” I jumped back pushing my sister further outside as I held the door open and tried to put some distance between me and the snakes.
“What?”
“They’re not dead!” I pointed out as the snakes opened their eyes and started wriggling about trying to unknot themselves.
We started panicking, calling out for mom. My sister tried to placate me, saying at least they were still in knots and couldn’t come free.
My mom appeared, saw the wriggling snakes and found a shovel and started bashing the head in of the coppersnake.
The bluesnake though came free and leaped towards the outside, towards me and my sister.
We screamed and scattered. The blue snake wriggled, surprisingly super fast chasing my sister.
“Run!” I screamed. She ran, but the snake was always just an inch or two away from her. I could have kept running myself and placed as much distance between me and the snake as possible but I knew that if my sister slowed down for even a second to check how close the snake was to her then that second would be enough for the snake to catch up to her and bite her.
So I ran after the snake and my sister telling her to keep running, it was still close to her. This went on for awhile when suddenly, the snake shifted and lunged towards me.
I skidded to a stop and tried to turn my body to run but my momentum wasn’t quick enough. The snake latched to my right hand and it’s fangs went in.
I screamed, my left hand clamping around it’s head, jerking it off me and crushing it’s head, and in the process one of it’s fangs also pierced my left hand.
I killed it though and it fell to the ground lifeless. I held my hands out in front of me, stared at the three puncture wounds in my hands and then looked up at my sister’s pale, terrified face.
“Mom!” She yelled. Maybe if we were quick enough, if we called an ambulance, if we rushed me to a hospital. Maybe things would be okay.
I woke up.
