PC Engine - Ninja Ryukenden (Ninja Gaiden)
Title: Ninja Ryukenden / 忍者龍剣伝
Developer/Publisher: Hudson-Era H.K. / Hudson Soft / TECMO
Release date: 24 January 1992
Catalogue No.: HC92052
Genre: Action
Format: HuCard
Tumblr media Tumblr media
First, we had Sega's Shinobi. When I was 9 years old, I spent many a quarter on the arcade version (and much of my allowance, to my mother's dismay (^O^). Why? Simple: ninjas are the video game world's greatest and most versatile heroes. So how do you 1-Up an awesome game like Shinobi?
I found out that Christmas in 2010 when I received Ninja Gaiden for my PC Engine, developed by a Hong Kong-based joint venture between Hudson Soft and Era Communications Inc. I popped that box open, grabbed the HuCard, and bashed it into my PC Engine CoreGrafx so quickly it nearly choked on it. I flick on the power and sit back. And THAT'S when it caught my eye... HOLY CRAP!! CUT-SCENES!! CUT SCENES ON MY 8-BIT CONSOLE!!
I was floored: I almost thought I was watching a movie; I had NEVER seen this high-quality look on my system! So I watch one ninja fall to the ground, and then I see the guy who would be the hero: Ryu Hayabusa...Ninja, Ladie's Man, Professional Ass Kicker.
I didn't even hit Run (PC Engine lingo for "Start") yet, and I was too impressed already! Anyway, Ninja Gaiden's got it all. Ryu's quite fleet-footed, quick on the draw with his sword, and slices and dices like no one's business. He listens to your every command (read: dead-on control). He does about 50 flips in the air during a jump. He's got cool Ninja Arts to aid him on his quest, including shuriken, Windmill Shuriken (they boomerang all over the screen!!), the Spinning Blade (jump and slash in a circle), and the Invincible Fire Wheel (TOASTY VILLAINS!!). And he'll need them, too...I'll explain why later.
Although I did explain the cut scenes already, I think I should go into a bit more detail and cover the in-game graphics, sound, and music while I'm at it. The cutscenes in this game, for 1988 on the Famicom, were amazing. For 1992 on the PC Engine, it looked even more so.
They conveyed the story in such a way that it almost seems like an anime OVA (incidentally, there was a Ninja Gaiden OVA in Japan, but it was poorly written and animated, and Ryu was only a bit character in it. BLASPHEMY!!), and you get such a feel for the characters that you would think that they were alive and for real. The story is nothing short of excellent, and the game plays it out perfectly, breaking the action up into six acts of 2 to 5 stages each, for a grand total of 21 stages. The difficulty level in the game slowly progresses from very easy to hardcore gamer tough, but it progresses steadily from stage to stage. The bosses fall in the same category as well, with a very easy first boss to a hair-yanking hard final boss. More on the difficulty later.
The graphics in this game are pretty good, albeit a little grainy. Everyone is of a decent size but oddly drawn, but the animation in this game is just stunning; it's so fluid that you wouldn't think at first that this is still just an 8-bit console competing in the 16-bit console wars. Everything, and I mean EVERYTHING, has at least 3 to 4 frames of animation; even little details like Ryu throwing a weapon look awesome in motion! The sounds are pretty good for a PC Engine HuCard although a few sounds are a little odd like the "FWP-SPLSH!" sound enemies make when they're killed (sounds like an explosion splashing into water!), and Ryu somehow makes this blasting sound when he gets hit. Is he laden with nitro or something? ^_^
But never mind that, the big draw in the sound department? The MUSIC!! Mark my words: MUSIC MAKES OR BREAKS THE GAME!! In this case, it doesn't just MAKE the game, it's the BLOOD WORK!! The music in this game is just TOO FUCKING GOOD!! The composer made some excellent use of the PC Engine's sound processors, which is just a miracle, honestly. It's so awesome that I used to use the Sound Test code, then tape all the tunes off the TV with a portable tape recorder held to the speaker, just to listen to it later. It's THAT GOOD!! Every single tune, even to this day, rings in my head for all eternity, and out of every track, my personal favorite, the track from Stage 4-2 (Bazlisk Mine Field) just RULES! Thanks to emulation (and the Internet!), I now have the entire soundtrack in MP3 format, and I still can't get over how amazing the music is!

About Me
Welcome to my Retro Den. Here, you can view my ever-growing retro video games collection. You can take a look at my updated-on-some-basis video game reviews (some are coming soon), read my game comparisons and take a look at some of the stuff I re-blog on Tumblr. I hope you enjoy browsing through the games and hardware, but remember that the cover scans I provide are sourced from the likes of Sonic Retro, Sega Retro, NEC Retro, Gamefaqs and other sorts of gaming websites - oh and keep in mind that if I were to play any game via emulation, I will state which emulator and settings I use at the notes section below any review (^v^;)
Tumblr media
Without any meandering, how about an About Me section?
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
ABOUT ME
Hi. I am Archie Sonic (Nobusuke) and I am the site master of this blog, and I am an official member of the e-sports organisation Secure Sector. Today, I'm going to talk a little bit about myself. What's up?
Tumblr media
WHERE ARE YOU FROM?
I grew up in Malaysia. In terms of the retro gaming landscape, it's not exactly the best-performing with most of every retro console being a bootleg NES of some sort, or the most popular devices being subpar performers at best, but I've grown accustomed to my country and what it is. I've had plans to move out, but I don't feel like it at the moment.
Tumblr media
ARE YOU ON OTHER SOCIAL MEDIA?
Meet me at archieSonic#6113 on Discord, that's my new home of communications at the moment. To be honest, I'm not really the most active these days, but I got to get on that.
Tumblr media
HOW DID YOU GET INTO ANYTHING GAMING?
I've been interested in video games ever since I was a little kid (I'm 22 years old at the time of this post), and I had one of these little bootleg portable PSP's which was basically a Sega Mega Drive inside. As for actual genuine gaming hardware, my start was a PS1, PS2, a blue Game Boy Advance SP with the flip-out backlit LCD screen, a black PSP 2000, and a white Sega Saturn mk2. Oh, and the occasional PC game or two. Don't forget, that was in 2006 - and I had a little computer with Windows XP. I don't exactly remember the entire specs of the thing, but all I know is I did not play online games on the bugger. And, as I grew older, I've become a gaming fan. You know, Pixels, Ready Player One, the XBOX One, PS4.... idk, everything.
Tumblr media
WHAT CHANGED YOUR LIFE IN THE GAMING WORLD?
The XBOX 360.
I got that thing as a present in November 2009, and I've basically gotten sucked into the world of 7th gen high definition games. You know, games like Eschatos, Lollipop Chainsaw, Forza Motorsport 3, and such.
Tumblr media
HOW DID YOU BECOME A RETRO GAMING FAN?
When I first explored the gaming scene on YouTube, I was like "okay, there's an angry video game reviewer with a ton of views talking about some old game I haven't known about" and he was talking about Wayne's World on the Super Nintendo. Weirdly enough, another popular video game review of his was about the Kowloon Kurosawa game that took a piss when it came to basing itself on Hong Kong's handover to Mainland China in 1997. That was some wild stuff. Hahaha. Then it turns out that such channels like AVGN were big enough, and I was like "aww man..." The retro gaming craze was so huge, every single company since then wanted in. Nintendo with the NES and SNES Classic, Sega with the Mega Drive Mini and Konami with the PC Engine CoreGrafx Mini. That being said, I did have some experience with emulated titles on modern consoles. Radiant Silvergun on XBOX 360 Live Arcade was the best of them.
There's a funny story too. When I announced that I would be writing my own blog on my since-then-discontinued Twitter page, I would get a DM from Depletion, who was part of the e-sports organization Secure Sector. They said something about expanding into more than just modern games and breaking into the retro gaming sphere, so.... yeah.
Tumblr media
WHAT DO YOU DO IN YOUR FREE TIME?
When I'm not running blogs or sat on the couch playing video games, I tend to go to the gym, play basketball or some other sport I fancy like soccer, rugby and tennis. It's important to stay healthy, ya know, especially when your weekday schedule basically boils down to work, work and work from 8 to 6 in a corporate office block. If I had to pick just one, though, it'd definitely be playing basketball. Basketball to me is a pretty good way to let the steam off, get energized and everything. I've scored 2 points, 3 points, layups, and I've mastered passing, dribbling and stealing the ball as well as strategically blocking opponents' attempts to steal the ball from my team. My goal for the future is to score one slam dunk - I always seem to get stuck though, but someday. I also started playing tennis a few months ago... something like 9 months ago. It's super fun, especially serving the ball with the racket; but you know, unfortunately, outside where I live, the weather and infrastructure doesn't really work out so... places to go tennis indoors.
Tumblr media
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO BE YOUR FAVOURITE GAME GENRE(S)?
I got to say my favourites are RPGs and strategy games. I really like something that challenges my mind and helps to solve some problem. Games like Cosmic Fantasy 2 on the PC Engine CD come to mind. These days, though, I find myself playing more shooters and racers. Not those first-person shooters, I mean vertical and horizontal shooters. Things like R-Type and Radiant Silvergun. They're quite good for what they are.
Tumblr media
SINCE YOU MENTIONED E-SPORTS, WHAT E-SPORTS GAMES ARE YOU MOST EXCITED ABOUT?
I'm really curious about these e-sports PC and console games. I mean, it's great for some online multiplayer banter and fun here and there. Minecraft and Fortnite keep exploding into popularity day by day, and I'm curious about GMod. GMod is always well known in some fandoms for animations made using the GMod engine. Man, I would love to be part of the main bread and butter of these games. Being about to game on with my friends from Secure Sector - that e-sports org.
Tumblr media
WHAT'S IT LIKE AT SECURE SECTOR?
So what's it like working with Secure Sector? Well, the organisation is quite small at the time of this post (it's mainly online-only for now), but the people in there are really great. They're really awesome, everybody loves what they do, and it feels like a big family, really. Overall, I feel great to be here. I get to play with the best and worst of retro, and share the passion with all the guys from Secure Sector from all around the world.
Tumblr media
ENJOY!!!

@RobotsPlayingGames 🤖💜🕹️ Here is one of my favorite retro consoles!🥰 PCエンジン/PC Engine by Hudson Soft and NEC, released in 1987 in Japan with CD-ROM² (released in 1988). It was the first video game console to use CD-ROMs as a storage media ever. ☺️ The CD-ROM² add-on comes with an interface unit that connects it to the PC Engine and servers as a base. PC Engine was a huge success in Japan, having the 8bit consoles to compete with, and even after Sega released the Mega Drive. In the rest of the World history was very different. It's kinda crazy to think that TurboGrafx-16, CoreGrafx basically failed in NA and EU and other regions, where Sega and Nintendo dominated, and players from some places didn't even got to hear about it until much later. Seriously, I've talked to people that never heard about the PC Engine and when I mentioned it they thought it was an actual engine for a PC. 😋🤭😱 But I'm sure you know a lot about it. What's your favorite PCE/TG16 games? I'd say Parasol Stars, Bonk games, Chew Man Fu, Neutopia and Blazing Lasers just to name a few. What about you? ─═💜═💙═💚═💛═🧡═❤️═─ You can visit All my Links including my Blog in my Bio. i finally got a sega genesis mini, and i'm happy to find that it really DOES have an eyecatch (if you leave it dormant on the game selection menu for a bit, it scrolls between all the games n plays a lil demo of each). it's similar to the nes and snes classic but just without the animations in between. i have no idea why sega doesn't list this feature, nor why none of the reviewers have said a word about it (it def gets brought up for the nintendo ones). i seriously only found ONE video online, after searching for years, that even mentions it. maybe it takes so long for the eyecatch to start that nobody even noticed?
i know i might be the only one who goes so crazy about these extended eyecatches, but they're seriously so cool! i had been passing on the genesis mini all this time because i thought it DIDN'T have one.
i was so excited when i found out that it might have one, that i actually ordered a pc engine mini as well (thankfully u can still order em brand new off of amazon japan for msrp, even tho turbografx and coregrafx are goin for crazy prices). since m2, the ppl who made the sega mini, developed the pce mini? i feel like it's okay to assume it has an eyecatch as well. but once again, nobody has mentioned it in any of the reviews. so fingers crossed!
