Crocus flower from late-winter to early spring, providing a much-needed source of nectar and pollen for queen bumblebees emerging from hibernation. This lawn has a blend of Crocus × cultorum 'Pickwick' (purple-striped flowers with orange stamens and stigma), Crocus x cultorum 'Jeanne D'Arc' (white flowers with a purple stain) and Crocus vernus 'Flower Record' (purple flowers).

Providing some drama in the autumn meadow or border is the cormous perennial Colchicum 'Waterlily' (meadow saffron). The large double pink flowers appear without the foliage which emerges as large leaves in the spring.

The foliage of Cyclamen hederifolium is highly decorative and variable. In this woodland garden the cormous perennial produces winter and spring flowers in pink and sometimes white but the foliage then provides the display.

The earliest autumn crocus to bloom is Crocus speciosus (autumn crocus, Bieberstein's crocus). This cormous perennial will increase to form large colonies as they become naturalised in a lawn.

The flowers of Colchicum 'Rosy Dawn' (autumn crocus, meadow saffron) appear in the autumn and the large leaves emerge in the spring. The bold rosy-mauve flowers have strong stems that stand up well to the wind and rain. Please be aware that this cormous perennial is toxic if eaten.

I suspect some guerrilla gardening has resulted in these Colchicum autumnale (meadow saffron, autumn crocus, fog crocus, meadow crocus, Michaelmas crocus, upstart) flowering by the roadside. This is a cormous herbaceous perennial which flowers in the autumn and the large leaves will appear in the spring.

I visited a friend’s beautiful garden yesterday which was full of interesting plant associations including Crocosmia 'Firestarter' (montbretia) and a purple-flowered Buddleja (Himalayan butterfly bush, buddleia). This hardy Crocosmia cultivar flowers earlier than most and thrives in full sun and a well drained but moisture retentive soil.
