Plant of the Day
Thursday 6 April 2023
Crocus flower from late-winter to early spring, providing a much-needed source of nectar and pollen for queen bumblebees emerging from hibernation. This lawn has a blend of Crocus × cultorum 'Pickwick' (purple-striped flowers with orange stamens and stigma), Crocus x cultorum 'Jeanne D'Arc' (white flowers with a purple stain) and Crocus vernus 'Flower Record' (purple flowers).

Some more fun from #September @The_RHS @RHSWisley. This time it is #Pittosporum #cloudpruned to make these lovely #blobs. I think it is Pittosporum tenuifolium ‘Purpureum’, though didn’t check. Another example of great #planting at #Wisley. Good to see. #plants #shrubs #garden (at RHS Garden Wisley) https://www.instagram.com/p/CjLVj2BKg4Q/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Plant of the Day
Monday 17 April 2023
The early, self fertile flowers of Prunus persica var. nectarina 'Humboldt' (nectarine 'Humboldt') will produce fruit with a golden flesh that has a rich flavour. This cultivar is considered a heavy cropper. The tree is being fan trained in the protected environment of a glasshouse so if there are no bees evident the flowers are best pollinated with a paintbrush.

This Clematis Montana would be welcoming people to our house, if we had any visitors at the moment as it’s at the gateway from the drive to the garden. This plant is 15 years old and I have cut it back very hard twice, to stop the trellis it grows over collapsing under its weight. I can’t quite put my finger on it, but I don’t think it looks as good this year. Maybe it’s was the weather pattern. I don’t normally feed it, as it’s a big established plant, but I am going to now. Ideally if it needed feeding, I’d have done that two weeks ago just before it started flowering. I’ll give it a liquid feed not granular, as that will get nutrients into the plant quicker. Still, it looks a whole load better than my other Montana, that has not come into leaf or flower at all. It had buds this spring but maybe they got frosted. I’ve checked whether it’s still alive, by snipping one of the stems. Green inside so it’s still alive. I’m going to do a bit of research to see if I should cut it back hard, or just wait it out. I might even contact the RHS for their advice.
