Podium Superstars of Covid-19

The unprecedented worldwide lockdown, triggered by the threat of the novel corona virus that originated from Wuhan in the Hubei province of China leading to the deadly respiratory disease, defined as Covid-19 by WHO, has also showcased some unlikely heroes who take the podium every day to brief the press with daily updates on largely the ground situation, including number of Covid-19 infected persons and those tested, and the measures being taken to tackle the present and the expected contingencies. The Coronavirus Research Center of John Hopkins University and Medicine provides a live update of just the (alarming) numbers: global Coronavirus infections and deaths in an easy-to-visualise numerical dashboard, which is usually used by all news outlets across the world. The local data is gathered by the governments of various countries at different levels (country-wide down to state and district levels) and shared with the public through a press meet daily.

Five heroes have emerged and many more unsung who haven’t hogged the limelight out of this threatening virus infection and disease that has killed close to 100,000 people and has spread to 185 countries worldwide. Governments are grappling with countermeasures and mostly have resorted to lockdowns in response to this deadly virus that is sparing no one. It has already claimed the life of Princess of Spain, aged 84. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson (55) was also infected with this virus and was admitted to the intensive care unit of St Thomas Hospital, but he has managed to get out of ICU and over Covid-19.

This 59-year-old Director of Public Health of Quebec Province has charmed the Canadians through some of his controversial actions such as touching his face, in warning the audience about the consequences of some actions that lead to contacting Corona virus infections. New Zealand is falling in love with the Ashley Bloomfield Show

New Zealand’s Ashley Bloomfield, “the extremely competent, somewhat boring” Director of Health, has set the “New Zealanders’ hearts aflutter” through his daily press briefings. Hailed as a “mild-mannered health care hero” he takes the podium every day and “in his gentle, measured way delivers whatever news he needs to, good or bad.” What has come to be called the Ashley Bloomfield Show, his daily press briefing is eagerly awaited by Dr. Bloomfield’s fans as well the country’s people.

Closer home, Kerala’s Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan’s daily press meet, lasting over an hour from 6 to 7 pm, is a worldwide hit, with Keralites across the globe following the updates closely. The Kerala CM’s message delivered with a deadpan face still has won millions of admirers for his ability to provide clear view of the situation. At times, Mr. Vijayan also indulges in advice: in one press meet, he asked husbands to help wives in the kitchen!

Writing for the News Minute, Sreedevi Jayarajan says that the Kerala CM’s 6 pm press meet has reached popularity levels of entertainment TV soaps. The Health Secretary of Tamil Nadu Is Winning Admirers All Around

Tamil Nadu’s Health Secretary Dr. Beela Rajesh’ no-nonsense press briefing has won her admirers all over, with praise pouring in for her clarity and elaborate explanation. A doctor by education, Dr. Beela joined the IAS in 1997. She patiently answers all the questions posed by reporters. She deftly defers tricky details on data sought for by reporters but has also proven quite adept at negotiating some controversial questions related to treatment and death. Rajasthan’s Health Official Explains How District Administration Can Make a Difference Literally to People’s Lives

Rohit Kumar Singh, Rajasthan Additional Chief Secretary of Health, in his interview with Shereen Bhan of CNBC-TV18, displayed an admirable clarity, combined with clear articulation, in the strategy adopted by the Rajasthan Government, especially the district administration, in preventing an outbreak in the textile town of Bhilwara just after one case of infection of a doctor was detected. It is now hailed as the Bhilwara Model. Mr. Singh said the strategy has been “ruthless containment, ruthless containment, ruthless containment.”

When it comes to the grassroot problems of Mumbai’s citizens, there is one man who always carries the torch, Shishir Joshi. We have seen him create impact through railway station beautification, plastic recycling, adoption of BMC schools and many other initiatives which have changed the social & infrastructural fabric of Mumbai. Shishir has managed to mobilize many projects that will make Mumbai a better city for every citizen.

The national lockdown in the face of the Corona Virus pandemic has left many citizens confused, anxious, overwhelmed, sad and depressed. It is a situation that no one was really prepared for.

FREE Counselor on Call

Staying at home can trigger many emotional reactions within an individual. Prior to the lockdown, we were already living in an era where texting and social media were giving rise to loneliness and isolation. Self-deprecation was masked by an overt show of happiness on social media – but when everything is shrouded in darkness, there is a limit to which one can fabricate happiness online.

It is at such a juncture when individuals need someone to speak to. Someone who wouldn’t judge, someone who would care, a trained professional who would provide solutions. 

When Shishir realised that the lockdown in Mumbai would apply brakes to the citizens of a fast-moving city, he knew that the cry for help would be heard soon. 

Along with his team, he immediately set up an army of 50 trained counsellors who will offer FREE counselling on call.

Project Mumbai in association with Prafulta launched a Free Counsellors on Call facility for people of Mumbai with a team of close to 50 trained Counsellors being at their service from 8 am to 8 pm across multiple languages including Marathi, Hindi, English, Gujarati, Malayalam, Punjabi and Kannada.

The army of Good Samaritans at Project Mumbai in association with MCGM are working hard to provide FREE delivery of groceries and packed food and medicines for persons with Disabilities or Senior Citizens living alone.

While many pseudo-intellectuals were busy updating their social media on how “worried” they were about the daily wage earners and the homeless, the Project Mumbai Army was silently putting up a backend to combat the issue. 

The army of Good Samaritans is joining hands with several NGOs, corporates and citizens to provide warm home-cooked, nutritious meals to the homeless and daily wage earners through the initiative #KhaanaChahiye. 

There are so many initiatives that Project Mumbai regularly takes up for the betterment of the city. The projects are of relevance across the social strata and most have a long term impact on the well-being of the citizens of this wonderful city we call, Mumbai.

Coronavirus: Celebrities Are Helping COVID-19 Misinformation Go Dangerously Viral Online

The COVID-19 pandemic has been spreading like wildfire around the world, and online, so has misinformation and fake rumours about the disease. From Twitter to Facebook, to YouTube and TikTok, you’ll find people saying that homoeopathy can cure coronavirus, that fifteen minutes in the sun will kill off the virus, or that 12 hours of isolation is all it takes to stop it from spreading. Convoluted messages about the impact of sound waves on the disease went viral in minutes, possibly reaching more people than information from the government, or advice from doctors.

One of the reasons why misinformation has been such a problem is because — like the virus — in the digital space too, there are some “super spreaders” who, probably with the best of intentions, have ended up posting misleading messages, or giving completely wrong information to their legions of followers, who trust what these celebrities and influencers are saying, which could lead to real problems.

This was particularly clear last week, during the Janata Curfew of March 22. Bollywood superstar Amitabh Bachchan tweeted, “Clapping shankh vibrations reduce/ destroy virus potency; Moon passing to new ‘nakshatra’ Revati. Cumulative vibration betters blood circulation.” This was a common theme expressed in many WhatsApp forwards, and after the curfew ended, the streets were full of people gathering, cheering, and clapping about ending coronavirus. Bachchan was obviously not to blame for all of this, but a celebrity with his following sharing such misinformation likely contributed. Although the tweet has since been deleted following intense criticism, it was retweeted 254 times and liked by around 2,300 people, showing how far it reached.

If this wasn’t enough, the famous actor once again came under scrutiny for his tweet after he was found promoting a website to get Coronavirus updates, which he said is the official website. However, if you visit covid19india.org, the answer to the first FAQ informs everyone that this indeed is not an official website but instead it is a crowdsourced patient database.

Bachchan isn’t the only major celebrity that has posted misinformation around COVID-19 either. Sonu Nigam was also trolled after his video about coronavirus dying off in 12 hours went viral on social media. The popular Indian singer can be seen in the video talking about the Prime Minister’s brilliant step of implementing the Janata Curfew and how this is going kill the virus before even the curfew ends.

Malayalam TV actress Sadhika Venugopal also had to face backlash for her post on Facebook where she listed preventive measures to get rid of the disease and even attributed the information to UNICEF. Following this, UNICEF Cambodia addressed in a tweet stating that the news shared by the actress is totally fake and people should only trust information coming from verified UNICEF platforms. Venugopal then apologised for spreading fake information and she added that the content on his social media is handled by her promoters and she was not aware of any such post.

Famous South Indian Superstar, Rajinikanth also tweeted a YouTube link along with a statement that urged people to stay at home during the Janata Curfew so that the virus could be contained in 12-14 hours. The tweet was soon taken down by Twitter itself, because it violated the company guidelines and was apparently misleading for the audiences.

Although in all these cases, the negative reaction from fans made these celebrities rethink their posts, it’s an important reminder that just like the rest of us, celebrities are also susceptible to falling for the same misinformation and fake news that is circulating on all platforms. The difference is that with their millions of devoted followers, any fake news that these celebrities amplify reaches not just our immediate circle of connections, but going viral, like a disease.

The Government of India has also taken steps to curb fake news and even asked the social media platforms to get a grip on the circulation of misinformation and false rumours. By this move, we hope social media platforms take the opportunity and educate the people by spreading awareness about the current scenario.

*COVID 19- The Unseen Face*

Below is a message from a lady Gynaecologist, Dr. Shabnam Tahir, in Malayalam. She lost her 4th year MBBS student-son Salman Tahir due Covid. Will try to translate it to the extent possible :

"May God bless all"!

Yesterday, my son left this world. And, today itself am coming to speak to you, so that no mother will lose her son/daughter anyone.

Am not only a mother, but, also a doctor.

My son had no physical problem nor was known for low immunity. He was 21years n was healthy, active and athletic and also good at sports, socialising, maintaining friendship etc. apart from being good at studies.

He had a desire to study well, become a good doctor and serve the people. But, everything turned upside down in 72 hours!

He never went out during lockdown period. Twice he went out in own vehicle for 5 minutes each but quickly washed as per norms on returning, being a medical student himself.

On the eve of Eid night, he went out with 2 of his friends for 2 hours n quickly had his bath on returning n slept.

On Eid morning he didn't get up early. When I went to him he had a small frontal headache. I gave him Panadol tablet. He had very little lunch that day.

When the headache had not subsided, I took the temperature n found it to be 99 degrees. I felt worried. Considering the present circumstances, I isolated him in the house itself.

In 24 hours the temperature rose to 101. Again I gave him Panadol+Brufen. Same day he complained of stiffness in the neck. Myself n my Pediatrician-husband suspected Meningitis. But he had no nausea or vomiting. Yet, we sent his blood samples for testing. The doctors said it to be Bacterial Meningitis. And, We started giving antibiotics.

In half an hour he was shifted to a hospital isolation ward.

Lumber-puncture-test was done n the result came as : Viral Meningitis. When queried on Covid testing doctor said it was not necessary!

I was with him during the treatment. He had no cold, throat-pain, cough, stomach pain, ear-ache etc. But, noticed a small swelling around one eye. Referred to neurosurgeon and a CT scan was done only to confirm everything else as normal n the doctor felt it to be due to Meningitis. Yet, he suggested an X-ray to be done on the chest. A small patch was noticed in the X-ray. Immediately, a Covid test was done. Positive....!!

All these developments took place in front of my eyes!

Heart rate, respiratory rate, started increasing. Oxygen level- drop increased. Could see the severity of Pneumonia increasingly rapidly despite external supports within 8-10 hours. Shockingly he left us all suddenly !!

My husband has tested positive for Covid. He is in isolation. We could not even weep and mourn together for our son till now ! Am in isolation. Salman's funeral was done as per the protocol. I will continue to be in isolation for some more time and will resume duty thereafter. But, I like to tell each of you certain things. Kindly listen to me :

1. Please do not venture out thinking there is no risk factor. Without being a patient of Corona, you could be a carrier of the virus. When we did the contact tracing of our son, it was felt that probably we, parents, could have been the carriers upon our return from duty and he got it merely sitting at home.

2. Please do not venture out without sufficient reason or visit/contact anyone associated with a Covid patient.

3. I keep getting calls even now from patients needing infertility treatment, but, tell them, "you have waited for 10 years, please wait for six more months. Please do not come now"!!

4. Please follow the Government's instructions and protocols. Don't say they are spreading fears. Despite being doctors n with all facilities in the hospital I had to see with my own eyes my son going away, helplessly.

5. To those who say that doctors will tell lies for money, I have to say, "I am prepared to give all our money and properties, can you get me our son back"!

6. To those who think, "I will not get these deceases", I like to tell..., you may be throwing your dear ones to death even before you know of it...!

Let no more Mother lose her child...! Amen!!
