*sniffs air* is that... pisces season?!? wishing the happiest of birthdays to the dampest of them all @spindrifters! the boys are dressing appropriately for the occasion...
"Happy Valentine's Day, Moons."
The box is deceptively non-threatening: plain cardboard tied with gold ribbon. But Sirius has that all too familiar glint in his eyes, the one that once meant they'd be spending the evening in detention.
Lips pressed together, Remus holds his husband's gaze as he opens the box—slowly, just in case something jumps out at him.
Inside is a simple, olive green corset. Soft, sturdy suede with delicate embroidery along the edges. "Not really your style, is it?"
"No." Sirius smirks. "It's yours. It's for you."
"You want me to wear this?"
"Desperately."
Remus sighs, suddenly nostalgic for the year he was gifted 'moon' themed boxers. "That isn't a present, Pads; that's torture."
"Oh, just try it."
"What's it going to suck in? My ribs?"
"It'll be good for your posture."
"My posture?" He cracks a grin. "Made you wear corsets in your Pureblood etiquette classes, did they?"
Ignoring his question, Sirius removes the corset from the box and sets about loosening the laces for him. "Take off your jumper."
Resigned to his fate, he peels off his jumper with far less enthusiasm than he was hoping would be the case tonight.
He's left winded just from yanking the corset over his shoulders. Sirius tuts and gently pulls it the rest of the way down for him.
"As a proud member of the working class, I thought you'd appreciate a front-lace one. I can still help lace you up though... if you like..." His fingers run teasingly up his front, toying with the laces.
"Not too tight," Remus grumbles. "I'll get light-headed."
"Don't worry; we'll get you a fainting couch."
His scowl gives way to a gasp as Sirius tugs, exposing a bit more give at his belly than he was expecting. Those elegant fingers work their way up slowly, reverently, lips pouted in concentration. The strange intimacy of it momentarily distracts him from the way his spine is straightening, shoulders rolling back.
"Moony!" Sirius exclaims as he ties off the laces in a perfect bow. "Are you actually taller than me? Are those shoulders I see?"
He rolls his eyes and hunches instinctively—or he tries to, but the corset doesn't allow it.
"I'm not taking the piss," Sirius insists. "You look so fucking fit, Moons. Makes me want to fuck you in a haystack or something. Come look at yourself."
Sirius drags him to the mirror—a place he generally ignores.
It isn’t horrible. His shoulders and chest do look broader, creating the illusion of a v-shape. And the colour suits him, and he supposes, on the whole, he feels rather… pretty. It's a silly thought, even sillier for inciting a prickle behind his eyes.
“Knew you’d like it,” Sirius says, annoyingly smug.
“It’s alright.” He shrugs. “Do you want me to wear this tonight, then?”
“No, keep it on.”
Sometimes he forgets that he married a madman. “I’m not wearing this to dinner.”
“Wear your jumper over it.” Sirius hands him back his jumper, and he knows there’s no arguing it.
He consults the mirror to see how ridiculous he looks, only to find that he simply seems more… erect. Confident, even.
“Oh will you just admit you like it?”
“It’s… surprisingly comfortable,” he concedes.
Sirius snorts. “I’ll get you a prettier one for your birthday. One with little bows and lace maybe. Or shiny teal one. Make you feel like a... sexy grindylow.”
“A sexy grindylow.”
“Yes.”
“You want to fuck a sexy grindylow?”
“I mean…” Sirius laces their fingers together, teeth grazing his lower lip. "Do you think Jeff would go for it?"
Remus shakes his head, desperately jostling away the image of Sirius and his grindylow godfather before plucking a kiss from his lips.
Sirius beams, gorgeous and glowing. "Happy Valentine's Day, Remus."
"Happy Valentine's Day, love. Are you ready for your present now?"
And well, Sirius isn't the only one with a telling glint of mischief in his eyes.
His husband arches a knowing brow. "Am I?"
He struggles to keep a straight face as he hands him the box, watching the first crackle of laughter cross Sirius's face as he opens it.
They both break as he lifts the collar—red with gold spikes—from the box, doubling over at the sight of the heart-shaped tag bearing Remus's contact information.
"I hate you," Sirius wheezes, wiping tears from the crinkled corners of his eyes.
"I love you too, darling." He smirks. "Do you need help putting it on?"

Portrait of Vivienne Westwood by Christian Shambenait
It took me a few days, but with the death of icon-goddess-genius Vivienne Westwood, I had to make a post here about her work and how massively influential she was during her lifetime, and why her influence will remain for years to come.
"I take something from the past that has a sort of vitality that has never been exploited – like the crinoline – and get very intense. In the end you do something original because you overlay your own ideas." Vivienne Westwood
Born in 1941 in Tintwistle, Cheshire, Vivienne Westwood (nèe Swire) did not have a "traditional" path into fashion and design, even though she took a course of jewellery at the Harrow Art School (she thought it was not for her, being a working-class girl), she became a primary school teacher and got married with Derek Westwood, had a kid... But she was a maker of things and a creative mind, and made her own wedding dress and jewellery that she sold at a stall.
Tumblr media
Malcolm McLaren and Vivienne Westwood at the Let It Rock store (London, January 1972).
But all of that was about to change when she met Malcolm McLaren. She got divorced, moved with him and had another son. McLaren became the manager of the Sex Pistols and with Westwood, they became a creative duo who dressed the band and became VERY influential during th punk era. We must add the after that they opened a store called SEX, which was the meeting place for the punk scene in London in the 1970s. So, yeah. punk wouldn't look like it does without Vivienne Westwood.
Tumblr media
"Vivienne and Malcolm use clothes to shock, irritate and provoke a reaction but also to inspire change. Mohair jumpers, knitted on big needles, so loosely that you can see all the way through them, T-shirts slashed and written on by hand, seams and labels on the outside, showing the construction of the piece; these attitudes are reflected in the music we make. It's OK to not be perfect, to show the workings of your life and your mind in your songs and your clothes." Viv Albertine
This era of Westwood's design has a lot of collaboration, especially with McLaren, and they produced under the Worlds End label until 1985. These collections have each a theme and a name, and here is when we star seeing Vivienne Westwood's eye and curiosity for historical fashion, as well as nods and details especially from the 18th and 19th centuries. Of course, it was the 80s and all was way more colourful than what we thing of more contemporary Vivienne Westwood, but you can see that EVERYTHING was already there in the period which she dubbed as "New Romantic" with collections like Witches, Punkature, and Pirate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Raincoat and belt, from the 1983 Witches collection, Victoria & Albert Museum.
Tumblr media
Ensemble from the 1982 Pirates collection, Victoria & Albert Museum.
Tumblr media
Knitted top from the 1983 Witches collection, featuring Keith Haring's graffiti.
The 1988-1991 era is called "The Pagan Years", and we can see the change of the main looks from punks to girls in clothes that parodied the upper class. And it is then that I think the ultimate Vivienne Westwood is seen: corsets, crinolines, tartan, colourful stripes... Here is when we begin to see the historical references taken to a extreme, mixed with the modern word and sense of humour, while always being perfectly made and patterned and fun for all genders.
Here some of my favourite ones:

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Madonna in her Fever video, 1993, wearing Vivienne Westwood. Gold leather corset, sleeves and mini skirt, 'Time Machine' ss 1988, Vivienne Westwood.
Always a creative force and a punk at heart, Vivienne Westwood was also an activist, putting front and center important causes like climate change, or sustainability and transparency in the brand's supply chain.
Tumblr media

Designer Vivienne Westwood looks through the glass toward the media during a photocall at a retrospective exhibition to celebrate her 30 years in the fashion industry, at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London, Tuesday March 30, 2004.
What is your favourite look/garment of this iconic designer? And does it have an historical reference? Let us all know!

Dress for a day
Tumblr media
Some of us may have already changed out our wardrobe from winter to summer and are desperate to get those fold lines out of those linen trousers or fluff out that favorite sundress. Though working in a rare book and special collection, we always have a pullover or jumper on hand. Regardless, today we are discussing June and June 1st happens to be “wear a dress day” and in the realm of modern fashion, dresses are not just bound to ladies anymore!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The month of June may be best known for being named after the Roman goddess Juno (also known as Hera). Depending on where you live, June marks the official beginning of summer for the northern hemisphere with the Summer solstice. For southern Hampshire, it is the beginning of winter and the winter solstice. So, whether you are airing out summer or winter dresses, the first is dedicated to dresses for all occasions. The dress can be a simple or complex garment, as well as, formal or casual; but the garment associated with being a dress has been traced back to Egyptians. This particular garment has been traced back to five thousand years and is called the Tarkhan dress which is made of simple linen. The earliest and oldest example of the Tarkhan dress was found in the early 1900s during a tomb excavation and was bundled up with other fabrics that went unnoticed until 1977 when the floor-length shirt was unfurled from this bundle. The description is similar to the simple shift worn under complex attire. The thin linen shift would protect the skin from the rub of corsets and hoop skirts as their popularity grew in fashionable society.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The item from the James Smith Noel Collection being featured for this post features hand-colored plates from a lady’s magazine. The Ladies’ Cabinet of Fashion, Music and Romance (https://bit.ly/3MJtcZv) was printed out of London, England as a small monthly serial series that featured romance stories, poems, and French fashions. The reception of the plates from an artistic lens were not well respected, however, the dresses featured are for the summer to winter season for all occasions which are labeled. The fashions of 1835 differ greatly from the earliest fashions of Egypt and also the fashions of today. We have shed the layers of the garment of yesteryear and introduced the lady’s trousers and even men can wear a dress. Fashion is ever changing and repeating with society.

Melusines and Clothes
(Long post)
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(This is just my thoughts from the point of view of somebody who's tried making clothing for unusually proportioned dolls in the past. 🤓)
Currently, we have seen non-Sigewinne Melusine wearing :
1. The Marechaussee Phantom uniform (ex. Menthe), 2. Aquabus uniform (ex. Aeval), 3. Tunic  (ex. Puca),  4. Sleeveless dress (ex. Flo), 5. Mela's dress shirt/jumper/skirt combo and 6. Mamare's tunic and apron.
Aspiring designer Flo brings up the differences in proportion between them and human children. Melusine have larger heads and more pear-shaped bodies with narrow shoulders and upper arms, larger hips and lower limbs. (They also have tails and antenna/rhinophores? but adding holes to an existing design wouldn't be that big a deal if everything is flexible enough to pull through)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In the absence of extremely stretchy fabrics, the clothing has to open in front or back at least enough to get the larger-than-shoulders heads through. (Shoulder fastening sleeveless dresses work too) The Fontainian style clothing all seems to have buttons and the Melusine clothing has lacing.
Tumblr media
Sleeves would need to be at least as wide as necessary to get their large, wide hands through. This is where there might be issues if the character designs had to adhere to reality. Not sure that, barring spandex, a hand that wide could fit through a sleeve as wide as their tiny forearms. Assuming that everything under the skin is like a human hand but shaped different, that is. (Sleeves that lace or button down the sides could work)
Melusine don't wear pants, they're just out here Donald Ducking it. They could probably have them if they want to but they'd have to either stretch, be loose or be drafted in a way that takes into account the unusual shape of the leg. I don't know what you'd call it, because they're not digitigrade, but the legs aren't straight and the lower leg is at an angle when they stand.
I'm not sure about doing the lacing but some people might be wondering "How are they able to do buttons?" One of the characters even complains about how difficult it can be to manipulate things made for people with their hands. There were button hooks in the Victorian era, tools to help do the small buttons on shoes and corsets, and there are tools available today to help folks with arthritis do up their buttons. So they would probably have something like that.

˚✧˚ lolita fashion themed ask game ˚♡˚
15: do you have an unpopular opinion about the fashion?
Absolutely! and will just repeat what said before: “JSK/jumperskirt” is a dumbass word! yeah yeah, jumpers in UK english are sweaters, and in US english are sleeveless dresses. Japan made-up a rando word while PINAFORE DRESS is right freakin there! (Meta used it in old non-machine translated english site)
but here's a fresh one - I looooooathe the way the Western side of this fashion insists on over-categorizing everything and placing it into very narrow niche boxes. Oh, you're a sweet lolita but this print isn't pastels colored? well, then, you're a bitter sweet! Corset outside the dress and skirt too short? must be ero; no comments accepted! Your petticoat isn't a "paradefloat" full and the blouse too basic: i dub thee "casual" because reasons
which activates every possible atom of a gremlin in my brain, and I start combining everything to create nonsense such as these

Some wippos by the end of the year!
Ugh, I wanted to make a dress like this for so long 🥺 It’s a mashup of MDP’s Vee Back Jumper and SP09 Dress Velvet and I stole one of the lace textures as well, and Janika31′s GP11 Dress Floral. It was as painful as it seems XD
Inspired by one of the Cassandra drawings that floated somewhere a few weeks ago. Parts include: MDP’s EP11 Blouse Shirred, Pudding’s Pointy Collar, Trapping’s corset with Yuichen’s recolor, Eltanin’s Just a Formality.
More clothes with texture problems! It’s a mashup of Memento’s EP08 VNeck Oversized and my EP06 Dress Sweater.
Separated Skittlessims’ SP18 Blouse Shorts, because I still despise fullbody clothes that don’t make much sense. Also fixed some seams, the neckline, the usual hokey pokey.

Unoa Freak 1, 2 and 3 [Review]
Summary
The Unoa Freak series is specifically written to celebrate and discuss Unoa dolls. Created in 2003 by Gentaro Araki, founder of Alchemic Labo, they were one of the first BJD available on the market. They are not as popular as they once were but Unoa dolls come in many common sizes, making these books a great resource to this day. The books also contain tutorials on face-ups, manicures, modding, stringing and more.
These books have been created with so much love and creativity, from the beautifully illustrated covers, to the fashion editorial style spreads for the patterns. They are one of my favourites to take off the shelf just to flick through the pages.
The number of patterns varies by book and each one has been created by different artists, so do take a look at the tables below before purchasing.

Pros
Gorgeous cover art with a partially transparent layer
A real must if you love Unoa dolls
The photography is superb
So many patterns for any size of Unoa doll
Includes a few accessories
Tips and tutorials for common doll styling and mods
Cons
Minimal instructions for the patterns, sometimes just a couple of drawings
The patterns in the book don’t work for every size of Unoa doll, usually each pattern is designed for a particular body sculpt (cries in Unoa Zero)
My copy of UF2 had a few pages come loose from the binding - not sure if it's a common problem but something to keep in mind
Tumblr media
Final thoughts
I don’t think I would recommend these as pattern books for beginners, as the patterns are sized so specifically and the instructions are quite minimal, but if you are an experienced sewer I think you will enjoy the variety of styles here. My main reason for recommending these books wouldn't be the patterns though - it's the peek into BJD history that make them special. I think they are a great addition to any bookshelf.

Brand Update: Innocent World White
I went on the Innocent World website yesterday and saw that they had a new line/brand set up to commemorate their 20th anniversary in 2018. I know it's not new at all, but I haven't really seen anyone talk about it. It's called Innocent World White and it's really cute.
Tumblr media
They made a casual version of their brand that's cheaper. I think it's great for beginner lolitas who want to try classic lolita or want simpler designs. They're not offering anything at the moment, but I want to keep my eye on it in case they release more items. I found the original listings of the items through google and they're very simple, but really cute. They've released the following items so far:
Tumblr media
Sailor Collar A Line Dress
Tumblr media
Marine Dress
Tumblr media
Blouse with Ribbon Tie
Tumblr media
Corset Hem Line Jumper Skirt
Tumblr media
Square Collar Dress
Tumblr media
Stand Collar Ribbon Blouse
I'm going to keep a look out for them on secondhand sites. I would love for them to expand to bigger sizes and more colors/designs. Do you think more brands should have a small casual brand like this on the side?
