Summer's over and now it's Back to School month! In addition to Labor Day (Sept. 4), 9/11 (Sept. 11), Rosh Hashanah (sundown on Sept. 15 to nightfall on Sept. 17), First Day of Fall (Sept. 23) and Yom Kippur (Sept. 25) here is what's on my radar this month:

Movies:

Stop Making Sense

I guess you could say I've written a great deal about Jonathan Demme's brilliant Talking Heads concert film Stop Making Sense (for proof, read here). Demme, in his prime, captured the Talking Heads in their prime as they performed over the course of 4 nights in Hollywood. To celebrate the 40th anniversary of those concerts (the film was released in 1984), A24 is re-releasing this legendary film in IMAX on 9/11 before a wider 4K remastered release in Sept. (my review and coverage coming soon!).

Dumb Money

Director Craig Gillespie has done some interesting work based on true stories (i.e. I, Tonya and last year's limited series Pam and Tommy) and now he's doing the movie version of the Gamestop becoming the hottest stock on Wall Street. Opens 9/22.

Drive-Away Dolls

I was a huge fan of the Coen brothers, but after The Ballad of Buster Scruggs, they began working solo. After Joel Coen's The Tragedy of Macbeth, I'm excited to see Ethan Coen's solo feature, an action comedy about inept criminals, which is his wheelhouse! Opens 9/22. [ NOTE: This has since been moved to 2024, awaiting exact release date ]

Flora and Son

John Carney has very quietly become one of the best directors of the now. His last feature film Sing Street was my #1 Movie of 2016. Now he's back with this Sundance hit, which once again is about musicians. Can't wait! Opening in select theaters on 9/22 and then streaming on Apple TV+ on 9/29.

The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar

It is very rare that a short film makes my Stuff I'm Looking Forward To list, but when it's director Wes Anderson adapting Roald Dahl, like he did with the adaptation of The Fantastic Mr. Fox, it makes my list! This short premieres on 9/27 on Netflix.

The Kill Room

It's a Pulp Fiction reunion with Uma Thurman and Samuel L. Jackson starring in this thriller, which also stars Thurman's daughter Maya Hawke. Opens 9/29.

It's been five years since the last Speedy Ortiz album, which makes this new one super exciting. Album drops 9/1. (Review to come).

Courtney Barnett End of the Day (music from the film Anonymous Club)

Last year I caught the documentary Anonymous Club about one of my favorite musicians to emerge out of the 2010s Courtney Barnett. Now the instrumental music score that she composed for the doc is getting a release. Album drops on 9/8. (Review to come).

Will Butler + Sister Squares Will Butler + Sister Squares

Will Butler was a vital part of Arcade Fire and before he left the band in 2022, he had already done some great solo albums. He released his first solo album Policy in 2015 and it was just as good as some of Arcade Fire’s albums. I named Policy my #2 Album of 2015 and I was lucky enough to see him live in 2015 just before the album’s release (read my review here). His 2020 album Generations was the next best thing to an Arcade Fire album during that time. Now he has a new album with his new group Sister Squares dropping on 9/22 (Review to come).

The Breeders Last Splash 30th Anniversary Edition

Last month marked the 30th anniversary of one of my all time favorite albums ever, Last Splash by The Breeders (read my remembrance here). To celebrate the band is doing a tour and also releasing a 30th anniversary edition dropping 9/22!

The Replacements Tim Let It Bleed Edition Box Set

I out and out love The Replacements and their 1985 album Tim is considered by many to be their best. Now the album is getting the box set treatment with an Ed Stasium mix of the album, outtakes and concert recordings. Album drops 9/22 (Review to come).

Wilco Cousin

A Wilco release is always a high priority for me. I’ve been lucky enough to get to review the band’s Ode to Joy and Cruel Country albums as well as this year's Record Store Day release Crosseyed Strangers and they certainly are one of the greatest American rock bands of the last 25 years. Hands down! This new album is said to be a return to their early 00s rock sound. Woo hoo! Album drops 9/29.

Instead of the Thunderbolt, Mike finds Eclipso

Mike knew he was not supposed to go poking around in the basement or Garage, looking for JSA things, and he was absolutely under no circumstances allowed to go near the tunnels, which was going to be hard next year when there was an entrance right there in the high school. His Dad insisted. It wasn’t fair though: Courtney got to read through the files, and go out on patrols and all kinds of things. Mike, if he was lucky, got to hear about it all after. But his dad hadn’t said he couldn’t go poking around in the Hall or in the storage container the American Dream owned. Granted, that was probably because the Hall was too far to bike too and Courtney wouldn’t take him, and he didn’t think his dad knew he knew about the storage room, or that it was full of stuff that had belonged to dead people who were probably ISA related. He didn’t even have to steal Barb’s keys, he just said he’d left his in his coat pocket and left that at school. Barb asked him to be more careful and handed over her set so he could take the house key off when she dropped him off, and didn’t notice when he took two keys instead of one. The storage space was cluttered and full. Mike bounced on his toes, eager. Surely he’d find something useful here, and in the mess it wouldn’t be missed. Something like the Staff, that loved his sister so much, or Beth’s goggles.

The first thing he grabbed was a tall hat, just in case it had a pocket dimension and an immortal rabbit or something. That could be cool. Rabbits could bite! He could probably train a rabbit, if it was already magic. He’d trained Buddy, after all. But the hat was just a hat. There wasn’t even a compartment in the top to hide something in, much less an extra dimensional portal. The boxes of kerchiefs and fake flowers all looked like just… props for a magic show, and not even the cool fake-knife-that-folds-into-the-handle kind. Mike grumbled, picking up a deck of cards and shoving it in his pocket. Maybe Jakeem would be interested in learning poker. Not that he knew how to either, but hey, that was what the internet was for. He checked another shelf. More little boxes, more junk. Nothing like the Staff, or the googles, or the janitor’s sword. Still, there had to be something fun in here, why else would frickin’ Mahkent have bothered storing it? If it didn’t matter they'd’ve just had a yard sale, right? Mike crouched, poking through a low shelf. A little box, made of dark wood, with a teeny clasp, sat on a scrap of dark velvet. It certainly wasn’t big enough to hold a weapon or anything like Yolanda’s claws or the mace his dad said he wasn’t allowed to touch. Then again, maybe he would be better off going to the scrapyard to see if Zeke could be convinced into helping him make a, a sword, or something out of junk than poking around here. He flicked the clasp open and closed absently, enjoying the click in made. The box’s lid was the kind that was fitted, opening under pressure with a little pop. He played with it for a moment, debating his next move. The glimmer of the prop inside caught his eye, a piece of costume jewelry. The dark glass was cut to look like a gem, the kind of thing people wore in paintings of old rich people. “Huh,” he said to himself, tilting it. The light shifted purple when it caught on the surface. “Neat.” Oh, I’m more than neat, a voice whispered, close enough that Mike yelped, looking around. He’d been so careful not to be seen sneaking in! Let me show you. It was talking to him. Like the goggles talked to Beth, before they’d gotten shattered. Like Courtney swore the Staff talked to her sometimes. Mike grinned. Mike turned the box over in one hand, surprised by the weight of the stone, the sharpness of the cut end, and closed the empty box with a satisfying click.

𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭: since this is based on barbie’s take on the nutcracker, changing up the cast from what tsuzuru had in plan:

clara/sugarplum fairy: sakuya. i want to see him go through a costume & hair transformation sequence, not gonna lie. 

nutcracker/prince eric: juza. obviously he has to be the ruler of the land of sweets.

mouse king: sakyo or chikage. i want one of them to wave around a sceptre and say quotes like “i’ll reduce the Nutcracker to a pile of splinters"

pimm: taichi... pimm is a spy :O who has to do dirty work :O but the real reason is i just want taichi to follow around sakyo again or maybe even chikage this time lol

major mint & captain candy: tsuzuru and citron respectively. mint is pretty serious and awkward, candy is a lot friendlier- i just think it’ll be a good way to insert some humor in the play

𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭: rapunzel in this one actually is the “servant” of gothel. also, rapunzel has a magical paint brush and also there’s dragons. who are purple. 

rapunzel: kazunari. obviously. actually, kazu has a lot of similarities with her: a good artist, patient, adventurous, quick thinking, hardly ever complains- also he’d look good with long hair i think ><

gothel: omi. there is an action fighto scene + also just the theme of omi playing villains lol... also THERE’S A SCENE WHERE GOTHEL PRETENDS TO BE RAPUNZEL BY WEARING A LONG WIG AND BOI- KAZU AND OMI’S BODY BUILDS ARE SO DIFFERENT BUT IT’D BE FUNNY IF THE PRINCE FALLS FOR THE TRAP ANYWAY

penelope: kumon. a PURPLE funny and clumsy dragon- fight me, the only answer is kumon especially once you see who’s next.

hugo: juza. a PURPLE dragon who’s penelope’s dad but he’s gonna be the older bro in this one (i wonder why...)

prince stefan: he also has a couple fight scenes... ngl bc stefan has blue eyes, light brown hair + described by the wiki as “fierce”, he’s banri.

rothbart: HOMARE! I WANT! THIS MAN! TO PLAY THE ANTOGONIST! GO OFF ABOUT DARK ARTS! TRANSFORM EVERYONE TO ANIMALS LIKE THE EXTRA BEING YOU ARE.

fairy queen: azuma. ugh just- imagining how ethereal he’d look.

erasmus: tasuku. he’s a troll that can act mean, but is genuinely kind and helpful... also, the VA of erasumus is also the VA for “unnamed burly villager” and i’m just saying-

kelly the cygnet: hisoka. there’s too many animal children, so hisoka is gonna be the baby swan. uwu. also, kelly has a quote, “I can't sleep.” and wOW THE IRONY

king dominick: i had such a crush on him anyway he’s tenma. rich, young, talented king who disguises himself as a page so he can find love for realsies. im just saying. he won’t be tenma’s only role tho ><

julian: kazunari. the wiki went “he’s the only bestfriend a barbie MC ever married” really shook me like ugh friendship dynamic between muku and kazu roles??? also kazu’s genuinely smart so him as the tutor was just gucci in my eyes

preminger: misumi. FIRST OF ALL PREMINGER IS ICONIC? WHEN HE SANG HOW CAN I REFUSE I WAS LIKE UGH KING. i just wanna hear misumi play an antagonist that’s also funny and do things with his voice.

madame carp: yuki. a bossy and rich woman who owns a dress emporium. pretty much it.

nick & nack: YUKI AND TENMA. THEY WILL DOUBLE ROLE FOR THE SAKE OF BEING MISUMI’S DUMB UNDERLING DUO

elina: itaru. first of all, pink motif. also i just like the idea of itaru being this recurring protagonist.

laverna: recurring villain citron. for no reason other than i think it’s cool when he plays power hungry villains

enchantress: i just want sakuya to play a role that’s more of a “powerful character” but still really kind uwu. another recurring good guy.

azura & glee: tsuzuru. elina is azura’s apprentice, and glee is a friend who’s generally really happy... ngl, i wanna see tsuzuru play someone more energetic for funsies

nori: masumi. nori is kind of a stubborn and jealous person at first, him and elina won’t get along right away BUT DAMMIT THE ENEMIES? TO FRIENDS IS GUCCI!!! 

merman prince nalu & linden: chikage... yeah i just gave chikage the guy roles ngl... but i wanna see chikage as a handsome merman AND handsome fairy so *shrugs*

𝐭𝐫𝐨𝐮𝐩𝐞: cross troupe. spring x winter.

𝐩𝐨𝐭𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐜𝐚𝐬𝐭: partially based on the ice-skating cards (i have yet to read the event story, unfortunately).

annika: tsuzuru. i thought it’d be fun to cast tsuzuru as a more sheltered character due to annika’s parents’ protectiveness. the contrast y’all.

shiver: sakuya. shiver is a polar bear cub sidekick who’s friendly and likes shiny things and that’s just... really cute... put bear ears on sakuya...

brietta: guy. brietta is annika’s older sister... who got transformed into a pegasus by the villain... i wonder how they’d change the pegasus thing lol

wenlock: tasuku. NOT GONNA LIE- i want tasuku to play the villain for all these wonderful one-liners: "Oh, smile! You didn't lose a daughter; you've gained a pet!", and "I thank my lucky stars I didn't marry you!"

prince aidan: masumi bc i want more roomie interaction on stage i mean their friendship keeps getting cuter and cuter.

cloud queen: azuma... that’s all. i just remembered her bc her hair has a braided crown, and i went “azuma braided hair brainrot”

courtney: azami. i like the idea of azami playing a spunky character who’s more of a tomboy, but still does like fashion and accessorising and... lip gloss?

tia: misumi? tenma? idk the intelligent and passionate archetype is very broad... especially in a high school setting

kevin: kazunari. just the whole best friend thing + kevin being a goofy person who loves to make ppl laugh ugh

racquelle: yuki. i know racquelle’s a bully here and say not to bullying... but sharp tongue.

American Girl Collecting

Hello folks. I have gone down the AG rabbit hole again, and I physically picked up and considered a McKenna in Once Upon A Child, but she was kind of a mess and she was $65 and I ultimately decided that it wasn’t worth it. It did get me thinking though. What dolls are on my list?

So that’s what this is about. I already have 17 dolls, but a collector is never truly done, especially when it is American Girl (I also collect Bratz and Rainbow High, but I digress). My boyfriend and I (yes, you read that right - I am an adult woman) have decided to go to Chicago for Spring Break. For a few reasons - it is nearby, Covid makes airplanes sketchy, and we didn’t want to drive more than like 10 hours (rip beach trips...stupid midwest). SO anyway. Chicago. Seems like fun and yes there are things to do and sights to see, but most importantly.... American Girl Place! Now, my boyfriend being the super supportive man that he is (really, he is amazing), suggested that we could also go to the AG store! Now that that has been decided, I began planning what I might buy (because in this day and age, I’m not going to go to AG and not buy something). I have a list of dolls that I do want to eventually get, but most of them are retired, as I was a child in the early 2000s. However - there are 2 dolls from my childhood that AG still sells. One has been cubed (Josefina) and the other has a robust collection (Julie). I *knock on wood* am not too worried that Josefina is going anywhere, and I just got Marisol over the summer, so I decided that I am going to pick out Julie! *cue months of anticipation*. I’m probably more excited about my AG plans than my impending graduation.. covid sucks. But anyway,, back to julie. 

Julie is a beforever style doll aka she has the new meet outfit that is kind of girly for who the character is.. as they did to all of the historicals. Don’t even get me started on the Samantha change UGH (pink and frilly? Sam would never). Straight up, not totally historical outfits on some of these dolls. Good grief. Lucky for me (and unlucky for my bank account?) I actually already bought Julie’s original meet outfit since I liked it since 2007. Now wait a minute Blue, don’t you already have Kailey? Yes, I do. Blonde Hair, Brown eyes, different face molds. Eh, they can be sisters. Kailey is my surfer girl (and Kanani of course) (no I didn’t buy Joss lol). Julie is going to be my tomboy. Side note on similar looking dolls - Kira v Julie. That’s all. That, and I really don’t understand why collectors buy just like you/truly me dolls. I have one, who I only have because she was $20 at an estate sale and my family saw her and was like, this is gotta be for Blue. Thanks Family. I do love her (# 23). But like, for me - I’d prefer to collect historicals and GOTY as there are finite amounts of items for them (many - but still an end if you focus on a certain doll) ex. I have all but one of the Felicity outfits, all of the Kailey outfits, all of the Mia outfits, and many of other historical outfits. With the current day line, there are many new outfits every year, and there is quick turnaround, and I just don’t vibe with that. 

other GOTY stuff - I currently have 5 dolls (Kailey, Marisol, Mia, Chrissa, Kanani), and I always get swept up in the hype, but it does wear off after a little while. I do hope to maybe eventually have all of them? It really depends on the space that I have, but at the top of my list right now are Saige and Jess. I am not a crazy fan of the more recent GOTY dolls, but I would love to have them all up through 2014 for sure.

Historicals - Ah. I have always loved the historicals. I could feasibly collect all of them, I am only missing Caroline, Marie Grace, Cecile, Josefina, Nellie, Kit, Ruthie, Nanea, Emily, Julie, Ivy, Courtney.. and that’s it (12 dolls)! Big Point Here - I am not trying to get all of them, and I don’t want all of them. I am very happy with the dolls I have that I have collected over the years. I probably will only get a few more (Julie, Josefina, Emily, and Ivy, mayyyyybe Courtney). 

Anyway. I am super psyched to get Julie and it’s going to be great!!
