It had only been a few months since Jack had met Katherine, but goodness knows, he had fallen beyond head over heels, and everyone knew it. With his new side job drawing cartoons for The World, he managed to save up enough to get Katherine a small holiday gift (he knew she celebrated Hanukkah, like Davey) just because he knew he wouldn’t feel right if he didn’t. And so, when he managed to purchase a small, tarnished silver locket from a second-hand store, he felt like he really was the king of New York. 

He wasn’t able to get it to Katherine on Christmas, though, and figured that it didn’t matter all that much since she didn’t celebrate Christmas, but still felt a certain anxiety that drove him to finally go and knock on Pulitzer’s door, hoping to God that it would be Katherine who answered as he fidgeted and shivered in the cold. Christmas had gone and gone with about as much fanfare as it did every year in the Pulitzer home: a small, tasteful party with a select group of New York elites, accompanied by a quiet Hanukkah for her father that Katherine joined in.

Katherine heard a knock on the door from where she sat downstairs with a book, setting it down to get the door. She smiled when she saw Jack, what appeared to be a gift in hand. “Come in,” she said, waving him in and stepping aside from the doorway.

Jack laughed, casually strolling along beside Katherine with his hands shoved in his pockets. "Nah, I know where we's goin'... an' I know where we are..." He turned to her with a adorably mischievous smirk. "We's jus' takin' tha scenic route." He pulled a hand from a pocket and held it out to her, almost as if asking her to dance as he walked her home. "Longer it takes ta get there, tha longer I get ta be wit' my girl... an' beside, tha sun ain't even all set yet. We got time... right?"

Katherine’s hand trembled as Jack kissed her open palm, raw and red after neglecting one of her duties. “Master, please,” she whispered. “They still burn from the switch.”

Katherine gasped. As much as she knew this was coming she was still surprised now that it was actually happening. To be perfectly frank, she wasn’t sure Jack would even actually ask. They had been together long enough that she knew to expect a proposal, but sometimes Jack just seemed so… flighty. Like she’d be more likely to see him run away to Santa fe sooner than put down roots and marry her.

A smile spread across her lips as his words sunk in. “Are you actually asking?” she asked, excitement building behind every word. “Because if you are my answer is yes!”

Katherine smiled. "Is that meant to be a surprise?" She couldn't help but tease Jack a little. Given the amount of time that he spent flirting with her, she couldn't just ignore the opportunity.

Katherine usually wouldn’t drag Jack to one of the parties in her house, but strangely her father was the one to make the suggestion. If she was going to be galavanting around with that newsie, then she may as well parade him around at one of his parties as well. It may have become a bit of a competition between the two Pulitzers, and neither one relented easily. She nodded, taking Jack’s hand in hers and stepping closer to him.

“I can’t imagine anything worse,” Katherine replied with a small smile. While he annoyed her, he wasn’t as bad as she liked to act like he was. With the amount of time they’d spent together in her small ship, getting to know Jack some amount was unavoidable. She knew he wasn’t as macho as he liked to act.

Katherine rolled her eyes. “I’ve only done that once.” Or twice. Maybe three times, but she wasn’t counting. Much more than falling off of things, a habit of Katherine’s was to get into trouble.
