Blog 8 (week 9) - Fireflies; I just think they're neat

Bioluminescence is one of the most incredible phenomena on the planet. Before humans invented electricity and lightbulbs in the early 1800s, the only thing we knew that could produce light was fire and stars…and life. 

As humans we like to think of ourselves as quite advanced and intelligent as we have mastered how to light up the dark - fire allowed us to find safety from predators at night when we were most vulnerable and allowed us to work even after the sun had gone down. But we aren’t special, so many species were making their own light long before we ever tried. 

If you’ve read my old post on art and nature you’ll remember one reason I am very fond of fireflies is because of a chance encounter with a massive population during field work; but fireflies have always been near and dear to my heart - growing up in rural Canada, there's no shortage of time to waste and bugs to catch and fireflies where the first insect I ever really took the time to observe up close as a kid. 

Bioluminescence is incredible for a lot of reasons, one being it is almost perfectly efficient at using energy (Branham, 2005). Fireflies are tiny! They don’t have a lot of material and energy to waste so their light needs to be as cost effective as possible. If you’ve ever touched a lightbulb that’s been on for a long time it's hot! But fireflies don’t waste any light energy as heat - both for their own safety and to save precious calories.

For glow-worms (larval fireflies) flashing lights are a warning to predators - a giant neon sign saying “HEY! I TASTE REALLY BAD!” (and they do, so if a bird eats the glowing worm once, it's unlikely to want to do it again). Adult fireflies have unique flash patterns for their species and use their light to attract a mate (I’ll save you my attempts at flashing jokes, you’re welcome) (Branham, 2005). I’ve you’ve ever taken a date on a romantic night out to look at the stars, are you and the firefly really that different? 

So how does it work? Well bioluminesce happens through a complicated looking chemical reaction like this:

It looks science-y and difficult but at its core ATP is the same molecule that your body uses when it needs energy. When you eat, the energy from your food attaches a phosphate “P” onto the molecule and then you rip the phosphorus off to use that energy when and where you need it! When the P is ripped off to do biofluorescence the energy is used to power a reaction between magnesium or calcium, oxygen and a chemical the fireflies produce called luciferin that produces light!

As pollen and nectar foragers- they are also pollinators hard at work even after everyone else is asleep. So thank a firefly for more than just their incredible light! I think it's always good to remember that as separate and exceptional from nature we may consider ourselves to be as humans - most of our technology is something nature did first and really - we’re not so different from the rest of the animals we share a planet with.

Now, with Tropical Depression Gilma set to brush by the Hawaiian Islands this weekend, forecasters warn that precipitation could affect Labor Day weekend celebrations.

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center (CPHC) reported that Tropical Depression Gilma's center was situated over 400 miles east-southeast of Honolulu and moving westward.

CPHC indicated that Gilma is expected to shift slightly north of due west on Thursday, and then turn to the west-northwest on Friday as the system passes near the Hawaiian Islands.

Gilma is anticipated to dissipate near Kauai on Saturday.

Rain totals are not expected to reach the levels seen with then-Hurricane Hone, but some areas of Hawaii might receive a few inches of rain before conditions improve.

Parts of Hawaii’s Big Island could receive 2-3 inches of rain through Labor Day, though cities like Hilo and Kona are expected to experience lower amounts.

A few inches of rain could also affect parts of Maui, with cities like Lahaina expected to receive less than an inch.

Honolulu is likely to experience wet weather as well, with the city potentially seeing around an inch of rain through Monday.

Tropical Storm Hone is moving away from Hawaii after bringing over 2 feet of rain to the Big Island.

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center in Honolulu reported that the storm made its closest approach to the Hawaiian Islands on Sunday morning, passing approximately 45 miles south-southwest of South Point, Hawaii. Peak winds were estimated to be around 85 mph.

Hone continues to weaken and was downgraded to a tropical storm on Monday after hitting Hawaii's Big Island as a Category 1 hurricane over the weekend, bringing heavy rainfall, damaging winds, and hazardous waves.

The intense precipitation from Tropical Storm Hone had a significant impact on Hawaii's Big Island, with many areas receiving over 2 feet of rain. The water surged down the steep slopes of the island’s mountainous terrain, flooding low-lying neighborhoods. Given the already saturated ground, there were also concerns about mudslides and landslides.

Hakalau experienced more than 27 inches of rain, while Piihonua and Kanakaleonui each recorded over 2 feet of rainfall.

Flash Flood Warnings were issued through Sunday as heavy rain pummeled the area, with rainfall rates estimated at 2 inches per hour.

The intense rainfall resulted in numerous reports of flash flooding, with photos and videos capturing rivers and streams overflowing their banks and flooding streets and roads in the region.

One video captured the raging water flooding access roads in Pahala, Hawaii. Local police reported that water had overtopped at least three sections of Hawaii Belt Road (Route 11), which encircles the Big Island.

The heavy rain and strong winds also caused trees to fall, and as Hone continued to impact the region, it led to power outages for thousands of utility customers.

By early Monday morning, PowerOutage.us reported over 16,500 outages on the Big Island. The number of outages decreased throughout the day as crews worked to restore power, leaving only a few thousand outages by Monday afternoon.

Shelters were opened across the Big Island in response to the storm. Both Hawaii County Mayor Mitchell D. Roth and Hawaii Governor Josh Green had declared states of emergency ahead of the storm, urging residents to prepare.

Travel has been disrupted due to numerous road closures. Passengers planning to fly from airports like Hilo International Airport are advised to check with their airlines before heading to the airport to confirm that flights have not been canceled or delayed.

What’s the latest forecast for Tropical Storm Hone?

According to the most recent update from the CPHC, Tropical Storm Hone is situated approximately 300 miles west-southwest of Honolulu, moving west at 13 mph. This motion is expected to persist over the next few days. The storm currently has winds of 65 mph, with some higher gusts, and is anticipated to gradually weaken in the coming days.
