First Meet of 2017
“You have no one else to blame but yourself”
On Friday, I competed at my first meet of 2017! It was also my first meet competing at the CPU Centrals Powerlifting Competition, and my first time competing in the 63kg weight class. Yes..that means that I didn’t make weight :(
It wasn’t really how I wanted to start off the New Year with powerlifting, but definitely a lesson learned...don’t slack off on your diet. There are so many excuses that I can come up with:
I have 5 more weeks to diet
It was the holidays
It was my birthday
It was only one
I didn’t get to take the laxatives earlier
I should have done the other
But thats what they are...excuses. The only real reason why I didn’t make weight was because of me. Like what my bf said (and I’m sorry for blaming you a lot this week and before the meet) if I REALLY wanted to compete at 57kg, I would have done anything and everything to get there. That means not eating the desserts at work, tracking me calories and being strict with my diet, adding extra cardio sessions, the list goes on.
Needless to say, had to make a good thing out of a bad situation! The day before weigh-in, I was freaking out. I was 5 pounds over. The smart decision would just be to start eating and mentally prepare myself for competing in 63kg, but my stubborn self kept saying “I can do it!” The even more stubborn self kept complaining and wasn’t really being proactive. The morning of, still started to doubt myself but I kept holding on that some miracle would happen haha. When it was my turn to go, weighed in at 57.85kg, luckily one of my friends that was competing had a room so tried to do a bath soak to get rid of the last .85kilos. Sadly, I only had 40min to try and spit/sweat it off. What put me to ease about the situation was finding out that I already had a qualifying National total in the 63kg weight class.
My main objective for competing at the CPU 2017 Centrals was not to medal or even PR, but to compete in Nationals next year. That was the major end goal. I didn’t even plan on doing it, until the rules changed and it was a requirement to compete in both Provincials and Regionals (Centrals) with qualifying national totals. While soaking in the tub, Sam searched my total from the Mississauga meet and it so happens that my total matched the minimum requirement. Once he told me that, I didn’t mind not making weight. My next worry was now matching/beating my previous total. Calculating my total, my wild card was my deadlift. Centrals was also meant for me to try doing sumo in competition, but for me, I felt that my deadlifts wouldn’t be up to par since I normally compete doing conventional.
After the bathtub, I went back down for weigh-in and ended up only losing .25kg. It sucked that I couldn’t compete in 57kg, but the number one thing that was on my mind was FOOD!!! The next day would be the first time I would compete without cramping and the first meet where I don’t have to starve myself in the morning. It was also a good thing I didn’t compete in 57kg since I was extremely tired and I even started to cramp when I was watching the competition *facepalm*. After watching the 57kg flights, went back to Mississauga to sleep over once again at my friend Erin’s place, and that was the best sleep I had.
Next day my main focus was getting that 302.5kg total. I was last for weigh-in so I got everything set up. I got my rack heights, had my equipment checked and put my stuff in the waiting room. Went for weigh-in and ended up being 60.05kg XD Game plan for the day was to PR in squats, and by doing so, achieving my total would be easy. For squats I was able to hit 100kg, 107.5kg (PR), and then 112.5kg (PR again :D). Looking back on the videos, the 112.5kg was more of a pause squat *facepalm*. For bench, I didn’t cramp (woohoo!), but the funny thing was that my last attempt looked better than my opener. I opened with 62.5kg, and during the pause, my right shoulder shifted up. Because of that, for the press command, my bar path wasn’t very pretty. For my 2nd attempt at 65kg, I ended up having a sticking point mid-way through the press. But for the last attempt at 67.5kg from the video (which will be coming soon), it went up pretty smoothly. I was happy because I was so close to hitting this at Mississauga, but my back cramped. For this meet, I think I would have been able to hit 70kg or atleast grind it out. Lastly for deadlifts this was mehh. I did my opener at 120kg, very easy and helped boost my confidence. The next lift was 125kg, a little slow for my liking but this was the lift that gave me my 305kg total. So for my last lift, I told Sam to give me whatever since it didn’t really matter at this point. I told him no more than 15kg, but what I should have said was just give me 7.5kg. The reason for that was he put 135kg which was higher than my lifetime PR. During the lift, I got up midway, and tried to keep pulling but it didn’t budge.
To be honest, I did get a bit emotional after that. I wanted to end the day strong, but I just couldn’t deliver. I really wanted to get that 9/9 but it wasn’t going to happen at Centrals. Overall, a great meet nonetheless. I was able to go 8/9, not only PR for squats, but also my bench and total!
63kg was fun! But I prefer to compete at 57kg. Now I just have to make sure I watch my diet this time! To surpass your competitors, offseason shouldn’t be a time where you eat whatever you want. It is still important to keep track of your calories and to not go too crazy with everything.
Thanks to Jillian for supporting and letting me drive her car to get to my competition and sleeping over 2 days for my meet :D Thank you Erin for letting us crash at your place 2 nights in a row since I didn’t make weight! And lastly, thanks to my Bubba for handling me and dealing with my complaining for the past couple of months in regards to my diet/water cutting/everything!
