I've figured out who Braius reminds me of:
Cody Walsh from D20's Unsleeping City (season 2).
Paladin. Ostensibly a devil worshipper. Hot Topic Ass Motherfucker. Deeply unserious, lol. 😂

As someone whose whole job is about educating people on the actual facts of history, including atrocities done by and to other people, I really wish I had a perfect answer for that. It would make my actual life a lot easier to be able to persuade everyone that sometimes the idealized history they were taught as children wasn't actually true.
My Super Serious IRL Answer is this:
In my experience, people don't want to think of their ancestors (their family) as the villains in another person's story. It shakes the whole foundation of who you are as a person, and it takes time to reckon with the fact that you might actually be benefitting from the suffering and trauma of countless others, past or present.
Likewise, it's easier to paint the people who wronged you as cartoonish evildoers rather than as the morally complex, flawed human beings that they are. People are complicated, and they leave complicated legacies behind them that their descendents then have to reckon with.
As for the CR of it all...
Ludinus paints the gods as all being manipulative tyrants to justify trying to wipe them out at any cost (his trauma is valid, his actions are not). The gods paint themselves as better than they are to gain and keep followers, whose worship they need to survive (not starving to death is a pretty major moyivator).
They both have motives for twisting the events of history to their own benefit. I'm happy to acknowledge that.
I try to base my takes on what we actually see characters doing in-game. I'm not an expert, mind, as there's a lot of content and I don't have the time to consume all of it in detail. I'm happy to be wrong.
To use an example from my last post:
Whether the gods created the Divine Gate to protect humanity may be up for debate. The EFFECTS of the Divine Gate seem pretty concretely real.
The gods used to freely walk the surface of Exandria, before and during the Calamity. We literally saw Asmodeus return to the Material Plane during EXU: Calamity.
Now they don't. Not just the Betrayer Gods who were banished and sealed away, but the Prime Deities as well. As far as we can tell, they can only intervene in mortal affairs by channeling their power through their followers. Smaller/less powerful messengers of the gods (angels, devils, demons, demigods, etc.) can appear in Exandria, but the gods themselves haven't been seen on the Material Plane in at least 800 years.
Given that it would be pretty beneficial to the Prime Deities to be able to appear to their followers and/or prospective followers in-person, the fact that they haven't seems like pretty decent proof that they can't. Especially since Ludinus' plans are presenting a major existential threat, and none of the gods have shown up to stomp his ass themselves. They've been reaching out to their followers and champions to fight on their behalf.
If the Prime Deities didn't create the Divine Gate themselves, and didn't want their access to Exandria to be impeded, I would think they would simply put a stop to its creation the way they did with Aeor's god-killing weapon.
So my conclusion based on all that ends up being that the Prime Deities DID create the Divine Gate, or at least agreed to its creation and the limits it imposes on their power.
Could everything we know about the Divine Gate be a complete lie? Sure. But we haven't seen evidence of that in-game just yet.
Until then, I'm going to base my judgements on what the characters are actually doing. Like you said, only listening to what they say doesn't give you the full truth.
i have a question, and i want to clarify this isn't hate or mocking, this is genuine curiosity
why are some people so against the idea of all they heard about aeor and the gods being wrong or twisted by history?
i understand being attached to the gods and wanting them to be good, especially if we had two campaign telling us that
but some of the post that i'm seeing are straight up refusing to entertain other perspectives. especially when matt has said repeatedly in this campaign that history is written by the winners and that some things might not be true.
it happened with vespin chloras and it hapoens in real life too. why can't it be the same about aeor and the gods?
Is it because you think that doubting the gods means automatically siding with ludinus? cause those are too widely different things.
i'd very much like to hear perspectives.

Yeah- I finished the episode and I don't think I'm gonna be normal about Braius.
Yeah he's a dumbass, yeah he's possibly evil (or just an edgy idiot? I'm betting on that one) but he's unfortunately also hot and played by Sam Riegel so it was a losing battle
#I btw cannot tell for the life of me why Braius's voice is hot but it is#s watches cr#c3e98#cr3e98#cr spoilers#critical role spoilers
