Paranormal - A Book List
Hello everyone! This month’s list is a collection of novels that deal with the supernatural! Are you ready for something a little spooky?
As always, please vote for which one we should read using the link at the bottom of the post.
The Saturday Night Ghost Club, by Craig Davidson
Tumblr media
Growing up in 1980s Niagara Falls--a seedy but magical, slightly haunted place--Jake Baker spends most of his time with his uncle Calvin, a kind but eccentric enthusiast of occult artifacts and conspiracy theories. The summer Jake turns twelve, he befriends a pair of siblings new to town, and so Calvin decides to initiate them all into the "Saturday Night Ghost Club." But as the summer goes on, what begins as a seemingly lighthearted project may ultimately uncover more than any of its members had imagined. With the alternating warmth and sadness of the best coming-of-age stories, The Saturday Night Ghost Club examines the haunting mutability of memory and storytelling, as well as the experiences that form the people we become.
Opium and Absinthe, by Lydia Kang
Tumblr media
New York City, 1899. Tillie Pembroke’s sister lies dead, her body drained of blood and with two puncture wounds on her neck. Bram Stoker’s new novel, Dracula, has just been published, and Tillie’s imagination leaps to the impossible: the murderer is a vampire. But it can’t be—can it? A ravenous reader and researcher, Tillie has something of an addiction to truth, and she won’t rest until she unravels the mystery of her sister’s death. Unfortunately, Tillie’s addicted to more than just truth; to ease the pain from a recent injury, she’s taking more and more laudanum…and some in her immediate circle are happy to keep her well supplied. Tillie can’t bring herself to believe vampires exist. But with the hysteria surrounding her sister’s death, the continued vampiric slayings, and the opium swirling through her body, it’s becoming increasingly difficult for a girl who relies on facts and figures to know what’s real—or whether she can trust those closest to her.
Later, by Stephen King
Tumblr media
The son of a struggling single mother, Jamie Conklin just wants an ordinary childhood. But Jamie is no ordinary child. Born with an unnatural ability his mom urges him to keep secret, Jamie can see what no one else can see and learn what no one else can learn. But the cost of using this ability is higher than Jamie can imagine - as he discovers when an NYPD detective draws him into the pursuit of a killer who has threatened to strike from beyond the grave. Later is Stephen King at his finest, a terrifying and touching story of innocence lost and the trials that test our sense of right and wrong. With echoes of King's classic novel It, Later is a powerful, haunting, unforgettable exploration of what it takes to stand up to evil in all the faces it wears.
The Haunting of Hill House, by Shirley Jackson
Tumblr media
It is the story of four seekers who arrive at a notoriously unfriendly pile called Hill House: Dr. Montague, an occult scholar looking for solid evidence of a "haunting"; Theodora, the lighthearted assistant; Eleanor, a friendless, fragile young woman well acquainted with poltergeists; and Luke, the future heir of Hill House. At first, their stay seems destined to be merely a spooky encounter with inexplicable phenomena. But Hill House is gathering its powers—and soon it will choose one of them to make its own.
In the Shadow of Blackbirds, by Cat Winters
Tumblr media
In 1918, the world seems on the verge of apocalypse. Americans roam the streets in gauze masks to ward off the deadly Spanish influenza, and the government ships young men to the front lines of a brutal war, creating an atmosphere of fear and confusion. Sixteen-year-old Mary Shelley Black watches as desperate mourners flock to séances and spirit photographers for comfort, but she herself has never believed in ghosts. During her bleakest moment, however, she’s forced to rethink her entire way of looking at life and death, for her first love—a boy who died in battle—returns in spirit form. But what does he want from her? Featuring haunting archival early-twentieth-century photographs, this is a tense, romantic story set in a past that is eerily like our own time.
Please vote for our next book here.

Charles Chaplin and Marie Dressler in Tillie's Punctured Romance (Mack Sennett, 1914)
Cast: Marie Dressler, Charles Chaplin, Mabel Normand, Mack Swain, Charles Bennett, Chester Conklin. Screenplay: Hampton Del Ruth, Craig Hutchinson, Mack Sennett, based on a play by A. Baldwin Stone and Edgar Smith. Cinematography: Hans F. Koenekamp, Frank D. Williams.
Tillie's Punctured Romance was Mack Sennett's first venture into feature-length production, and perhaps the first feature-length comedy ever made. Despite the later reputation of Charles Chaplin, it was designed as a starring vehicle and film debut for Marie Dressler, then the much bigger star. It was adapted from her Broadway hit, Tillie's Nightmare, and Dressler claimed that she persuaded Sennett to cast Chaplin as her leading man. Adding Sennett's then-lover Mabel Normand, who also had a hand in developing Chaplin's early career, created a wonderful dynamic, but the teaming was never repeated: Chaplin's ambitions led him into writing and directing his own films; Normand and Sennett split in 1918, and her career suffered from her drug addiction and association with director William Desmond Taylor, whose murder in 1922 caused a scandal; Dressler was unable to establish a film career after the failure of two short films in which she also played Tillie, though she returned to the screen in 1927 after a nine-year absence. It's a shame, because Dressler was one of the few comic actresses capable of upstaging Chaplin, as their scenes together demonstrate. She had a rare gift for over-the-top physical comedy, which was Sennett's forte. For this anarchic comedy, he marshaled all of his regular company, including Mack Swain and Chester Conklin, as well as the Keystone Kops, without ever eclipsing Dressler. Later in her career, Dressler would evoke pathos as well as laughs, but Sennett never lets Tillie be anything but a clown, except at the very ending, when she and Mabel share in their triumph over Chaplin's con man.

The alleged white supremacist accused of opening fire and killing ten people in a Buffalo, New York grocery store appeared before a judge for the first time on Saturday — just hours after the massacre took place.
Payton Gendron, 18, of Conklin, N.Y., is believed to have traveled three-and-a-half hours from his home near Binghamton to the Tops Friendly Market where authorities say he shot 13 people.  Tops is a regional grocery store chain.
“Mr. Gendron, you’ve been charged with multiple counts of murder in the first degree,” Buffalo City Court Chief Judge Craig Hannah informed the defendant.
“There should be a copy of the charges in front of you,” the judge continued.  “Do you understand that sir?”
“Yes, sir,” Gendron said.
Gendron appeared in court wearing a white paper-style jail smock. The prosecutor appeared to be wearing blue jeans.
“Do you want me to read these charges to you, or do you understand these charges?” the judge asked.
“I understand my charges,” the defendant said.
When asked if he could afford an attorney, Gendron said “no.”
An attorney who appeared along with the defendant said he would accept an appointment as defense counsel.  That defense attorney, Brian Parker, entered a not guilty plea on behalf of his client and waived a formal reading of court papers.
A prosecutor said he was prepared to swiftly present the case to a grand jury.
Erie County District Attorney’s Office said in a Saturday press release that the defendant was technically arraigned on “one count of Murder in the First Degree,” even though the judge and the defendant seemed to reference multiple counts in court.
Prosecutors Gary W. Hackbush, who is the chief of the county homicide unit, and John P. Feroleto, who is the chief of the county’s major crimes unit, are assigned to the case. Hackbush handled the Saturday appearance.
Under New York law, first-degree murder is punishable by life in prison without parole.
Gendron is due back in court on Thurs., May 19, at 9:30.
Cameras are generally not allowed in New York State courts under a myriad of rules and privacy statutes, but arraignments (such as the one held Saturday) and sentencing hearings are exceptions to that general rule.
New York Gov. Kathy Hochul (D) called the incident a “white supremacist shooting” and said the suspect was a “white supremacist.” She also called the shooting an “act of terrorism.”
Authorities said that Gendron livestreamed the massacre on the internet.  Images of the gun used in the attack — images which appear to be authentic and which were apparently taken from that livestream — indicated that a racial epithet was scrawled on the barrel of the weapon.
Gendron is also said to have posted a 180-page manifesto online that is allegedly filled with white supremacist and antisemitic sentiments.  The missive also contains references to — and sometimes borrows from — screeds penned by previous shooters, according to the Anti-Defamation League.
The document expressed an urge to “spread awareness to my fellow whites about the real problems the West is facing” and to “encourage further attacks that will eventually start the way that will save the Western world,” the ADL said.

Black Rain (1989)
Tumblr media
Is Black Rain a good movie? It’s hard to say. Some of it is so bad it’s good, some is legitimately good, and other aspects are just straight-up bad. It all comes together to make a film that’s enjoyable, but not very memorable.
In New York, officer Nick Conklin (Michael Douglas, who spends the entire film talking in police clichés) and his partner Charlie (Andy García) snag a Yakuza member named Sato (Yūsaku Matsuda) and help extradite him to Osaka. When he escapes at the Japanese airport, the two U.S. officers are determined to find the one that got away, which brings them at odds with the Japanese police.
I don’t understand what Craig Bolotin and Warren Lewis were thinking when they wrote the film's dialogue. When I say that Nick talks entirely in police clichés, I mean it. “He’s the kind of guy you want backing you up when the shit goes down.” The hero with the long string of honors, but the disdain for authority figures. Whenever he opens his mouth it’s “It ain’t easy out there”. “You want dirt, huh? You go to City Hall. Police Plaza. The whole goddamn system’s falling apart.” All he does is talk about how you’ve got to talk to your partner before you go to the suits, how he’s on the streets instead of a desk and therefore knows the deal better than everyone else, how nobody understands him and on and on. This is where the unintentional laughs come in. The man's a cartoon. It doesn’t matter if he’s on the streets of New York or in Japan, he believes that he’s got the experience that puts him on a higher level than everyone else. Not knowing Japanese? Being unable to read street signs? Those won't hinder investigating a crime in a place he’s never been to and knows nothing about. Even though the only people he can communicate with are the extraordinarily patient Japanese officers or randoms who just happen to speak English, he‘s going to be THE guy that cracks the case.
When dealing with the side characters, Black Rain is B-A-D. Nick's love interest, for example. She’s in two scenes so we can shoehorn a white woman in the heart of Osaka and hope they get together? Why? This movie is over 2 hours long. She could have easily been cut. I also feel unease about the fact that we have a police story in which two white officers come to a foreign country to solve their crime problem. I understand what they’re going with, but it’s not like they’re called in because the New York Mob is expanding its operation overseas. Why couldn’t the police from that country solve this problem? It just doesn’t sit well with me, even when hotshot Nick is paired up with calm and collected officer Masahiro Matsumoto (Ken Takakura) and they do the buddy cop thing (Though less comedically than in Rush Hour).
It’s frustrating. When you get to the main story, it’s great. We have all of these different elements to decipher and track down with members of the Yakuza double-crossing each other, feigning allegiance and cooperation while Sato is running circles around the police and managing his enemies as well. When Nick’s street smarts come into play and help him make some breakthroughs that others wouldn't have caught, you're anxious to see what's next. The climax is exciting and there’s plenty of material here to make you like the movie despite the ridiculous police stereotypes throughout.
This movie needed to be better, or worse. As is, it’s very much middle-of-the-road. Even the amusing bits - basically any scenes in which Nick unleashes a deluge of ridiculous words or that has him play the cop with the chip on his shoulder - you’ve seen before. If you see Black Rain on TV or you can rent it for like a dollar, I say "go ahead". it’s not so bad you’ll regret the time you spent viewing it. I can't say it's worth putting effort into either. (On DVD, September 4, 2015)

4 Best Flat Roof Materials
Tumblr media
Replacing your commercial roof isn’t like buying a new blend of coffee for the office — you don’t make a decision this big on a whim. If you’re looking to replace the roof on your business or one of the buildings you manage, you do your research and you find the best flat roof materials for your needs and your budget.
With a marketplace crowded by a ton of options, deciding on the best flat roof materials for your project can be difficult. J. Smucker Contracting can help — we’re a commercial-only roofer that specializes in both roof coatings and total roof replacement.
High-Performing Commercial Roofing Material Types
When analyzing the different commercial roofing material types, you’ll want to know about the lifespan, the bottom line price, and the ease of maintenance of each of your options. We break down the most popular and best commercial roof materials that you should consider when replacing your business’s roof.
   PVC Roofing
For many projects, PVC roofing is our preferred choice as the best flat roof material on the market. PVC roofing is somewhat more expensive than other single-ply commercial roofing materials, however it offers a wide range of benefits for the price. First, the reinforced membrane makes PVC roofs resistant to impact damage and the cracking which normally shortens the lifespan of single-ply roofs. PVC roofing is one of the best flat roof materials because it is low maintenance with a long lifespan. At J. Smucker Contracting, we offer a 20-year warranty on new PVC roofing we install. In addition, just like TPO roofing, PVC is a reflective white color which is useful as it dramatically lowers the business’s energy bills.
   Metal Roofing
A commercial standing seam metal roof is the ideal choice for a building with a roof slope greater than 2 inches. Metal is different from most other commercial roofing material types for a few reasons. Due to the expert installation process and the nature of the material, metal is the most expensive roof type to have installed. However, metal roofing has the longest lifespan, lasting between 20 and 30 years. Metal is an extremely durable material and is immune to cracks that affect single-ply roofs. However, metal roofs can be susceptible to leaks around the seams and roof edges.
    TPO
This very popular roof type is also among the best flat roof materials to install. Not only is a TPO roof an inexpensive option, it has a decent lifespan between 10 and 20 years. In addition, these white-coat roofs have all of the same energy saving properties as PVC roofs. Plus, they require less maintenance than EPDM roofs, as the seams are heat welded to prevent leaks.
Modified Bitumen Roof
When compared to other commercial roofing materials, modified bitumen stands out as the more-budget friendly option. Modified bitumen roofs use an asphalt membrane as the base of the roof itself. This surface is susceptible to cracking and blistering which reduces the typical lifespan to just 10 to 15 years. While the lifespan is less than the more advanced options, the price point alone can make modified bitumen one of the best flat roof materials for some businesses.
If you know you need a commercial roof replacement, we’re the team to trust. At J. Smucker Contracting, we have experience with all 4 of the best commercial roofing material types.
   Roof Restoration
While J. Smucker Contracting is experienced in roof tear-offs and full-roof replacement, we often recommend using a commercial roof restoration as an alternative. Based around our Conklin roof coating solution, roof restoration fixes leaks and other areas of damage while keeping your business’s roof protected for more than a decade. Our commercial roof restoration coatings completely cover the old and damaged roof, essentially creating a roof that is better than when it was new.

Learn More about the Best Flat Roof Materials
Whether you know you need a new roof or you’d like to explore cost-effective roof restoration, it is a major decision that has a massive impact on your business. Research and consultation plays a crucial role when deciding whether you want to explore total roof replacement, as well as the best flat roof materials for your situation.
We offer a roof inspection and free consultation to help any potential clients with this decision.

LUCY AND THE 20-20 VISION
S3;E18 ~ January 11, 1971
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Directed by Jack Carter ~ Written by Phil Leslie & George Balzer
Synopsis
Lucy wants to take the kids to Tijuana for a long weekend, but first must get grouchy Harry to give her two days off.  Lucy thinks the cause of his moodiness is due to vision problems and goes to outrageous lengths to get him to go see an eye doctor.
Regular Cast
Lucille Ball (Lucy Carter), Gale Gordon (Harrison Otis Carter), Lucie Arnaz (Kim Carter), Desi Arnaz Jr. (Craig Carter)
Guest Cast
Tumblr media
Jack Collins (Doctor Collins / 'Carl Baker') appeared on the final two episodes of “The Lucy Show.” He played Russel Slater on “Dallas” from 1982 to 1987. This is the fourth of his six appearances on “Here’s Lucy.”
The final credits of the episode list the character as Doctor Proctor, when he clearly answers the telephone “Doctor Collins.”  The name might have been left over from an earlier draft of the script.
Tumblr media
Morreen and Colleen Gemini (The Conklin Twins aka 'Jane Conklin') make their only screen appearance in this episode.
Their surname would lead one to believe that these are not their real names!
Tumblr media
Tippy the Invisible Dog (Himself) makes his only (dis)appearance in the Carter living room!
Tippy belongs to the Watsons, who live next door.
Tumblr media
This episode was rerun by CBS on June 21, 1971. It was up against a major league baseball game on NBC.
Tumblr media
The final draft of the script was submitted on June 12, 1970 and read by Lucille Ball in July of that year.
Tumblr media
This is the first of only two directing credits for comedian Jack Carter, both on “Here's Lucy.”  Carter was a friend of Lucille Ball and Gary Morton's having served as best man at their wedding in 1961.  A few weeks later he married Paula Stewart, who played Lucy's sister Janie in Broadway's Wildcat. He acted in “Lucy Sues Mooney” (TLS S6;E12). He will direct one more episode of “Here's Lucy” later in 1971 starring Carol Burnett.
This is the second episode in a row where Lucy wants a vacation and tries to convince Harry to let her have the time off by using unusual tactics.
Kim and Craig had a grouchy math teacher named Mr. Ridgeway (”the terror”) who had vision problems rectified by glasses.
Tumblr media
Harry shouts that if he really yelled at Lucy he'd “shatter every piece of glass from here to Pismo Beach!” This isn't the first time that Pismo Beach has been used for a punchline on the series. Harry offered Lucy “three days in glamorous Pismo Beach” as a bargaining chip in “Lucy Goes on Strike” (S1;E16). The California beach town was a favorite destination of Bugs Bunny in the Warner Brothers cartoons.
Tumblr media
When Harry yells at Lucy from the open door, we see that there is a fallout shelter sign in the hallway. These signs were introduced by the Office of Civil Defense on December 1, 1961 (during the height of the Cold War) to designate federally approved public shelters in the event of a nuclear explosion. This particular sign indicates that the fallout shelter is in the basement. The capacity of the shelter was also sometimes indicated. The Office of Civil Defense was dissolved in 1970, but many of these signs remain on buildings to this day.
Lucy has the Doctor make-up some nonsense signs and bring them over in disguise as a painter.
Tumblr media
Sign #1: “Carter’s for Jobs” (in Latvian)
Tumblr media
Sign #2: “Carter’s Gets Best Results” (in Rumakian...where they make rumaki!)
Tumblr media
Lucy says “If there were free meals on the moon, Harry would have been there three days before Neil Armstrong.”  US Astronaut Neil Armstrong (1930-2012) was the first human to step foot on the surface of the moon on July 21, 1969. The food on Apollo 11 was freeze dried and the menu consisted of pineapple fruitcake, peaches, beef with vegetables, beef hash, chocolate pudding, brownies, and spiced fruit cereal for breakfast!  Interestingly, in “Lucy Becomes an Astronaut” (TLS S1;E6, abouve), Lucy Carmichael is seen eating space foods when in a simulator.
Tumblr media
In order to pretend to be surprised by Harry at the door, Lucy acts as if she was putting out the milk bottle.  At the time, rural delivery of milk and other dairy products to residential homes was commonplace.  In order to ‘recycle’ the milk bottles, homeowners would put the empty bottles on the porch at night, so the milkman could take them away early the next morning.  A famous example of this was seen in the closing credits of the primetime cartoon sitcom satire “The Flintstones” (1960-66, inset photo).
Some of the ways Lucy, Kim, and Craig plan to convince Harry his vision is bad include:
Disconnecting the doorbell and telling him he missed the button
Employing a retractable hat hook so his hat falls to the floor
Pulling the chair out from under him as he goes to sit
Asking twin girls to drop by and pretending they are only one girl
Claiming to see an invisible dog
Asking him to sign a contract on the dotted line that has no dotted line
Polishing an invisible magnifying glass to help him find said dotted line
Tumblr media
In the twist ending, Harry (now happily bespectacled) exits quoting Romeo and Juliet with a Mexican twist:
HARRY: “Ah, Senorita. Parting is such sweet sorrow. That I could say adios till it be morrow.”
In a 1969 episode of “Here’s Lucy,” Harry says that he was in Romeo and Juliet in college. Because it was an all-men’s college, he played Juliet.

Harry offers to take Kim and Craig to Lake Arrowhead for a swim, or to San Diego to visit the zoo. They (coincidentally) settle on Tijuana for the bullfights. Lake Arrowhead stood in for the 49th state during the location shots for “Lucy Goes to Alaska,” a 1959 episode of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour.”
Tumblr media
The famous San Diego Zoo was suggested as a possible stop-over in “Lucy and Viv Visit Tijuana” (S2;E19). Finally, Lucy Ricardo went to Tijuana in “Lucy Goes To Mexico,” a 1958 episode of “The Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour” which featured second unit footage of a now-demolished Tijuana bull ring where Lucy disguises herself as a matador and takes on a bull!
Tumblr media
Although “Lucy Has Her Eyes Examined” (ILL S3;E11) ended with Lucy being seen by the optometrist, it was originally Ricky who had the headaches that Lucy believed were caused by vision problems.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Set Change! This episode features some changes to the office set including panels in place of the shaded glass in the office doors plus a time clock next to the door. The clock is necessary for the finale of the episode, but there seems no explanation for the sudden replacement of the glass. The next time we see the office, the glass panes will be back and the time clock is gone.
Tumblr media
Timeline Troubles! In this episode, Harry ends up wearing glasses, which he wore extensively in the previous episode, “Lucy's Vacation” (S3;E17). It is likely that this episode was filmed first and aired out of sequence.
Tumblr media
Sound Defects! When Lucy shows Craig the contract without the dotted line, her lips don't move when she says “Here, see?” This is either a really bad case of ADR overdubbing due to studio noise or something Lucy actually said on set that needed to be changed. A few moments later, as Harry says “Something smells delicious” there is an audible squeak on the soundtrack. If this had occurred earlier (and louder) it could have necessitated the sloppy overdub.
Tumblr media
Time Check! Just before Harry bursts cheerfully through the door wearing his new glasses, Lucy says “He's at his worst in the morning.” The time clock next to the door, however, reads 1:55!
Tumblr media
When Harry bursts through the door shouting “Good Morning!” (although it is clearly afternoon) Kim moves back startled and nearly knocks Craig over when he backs into the side table behind him!  He steadies himself just in time.
Tumblr media
“Lucy and the 20-20 Vision” rates 2 Paper Hearts out of 5
The premise of this episode relies on faulty logic that Harry's new glasses will make him happy enough to give Lucy two days off – a real stretch.  Suppose Harry believed (thanks to Lucy's tricks) that he was going insane and having hallucinations? Although the elaborate mind-games she plays with Harry are humorous in and of themselves, the episode doesn't really go anywhere and is fraught with odd inconsistencies and errors.

Pot bust turns into bomb investigation at North Stamford home
STAMFORD-A raid on what was believed to be a small pot growing operation in a North Stamford house on Thursday evening took a disturbing turn upon the shocking discovery of what police believe to be a half-dozen home-made bombs that the FBI has been brought in to help investigate, police say. Conklin said the Narcotics and Organized Crime Squad got a tip this month that Alexander Braverman, 24, was cultivating marijuana in the 3,400 square foot home he lives in with his mother and father. After obtaining a search warrant for the home on Craig Court, next to the Pound Ridge, New York border, police called out the Special Response Team (SWAT) to secure the home because of the firearms believed to be inside. [...] after police got into the home at about 7 p.m. Thursday, on top of the weapons, they almost immediately found what appears to be about a half-dozen improvised explosive devices, as well as what may be a live hand grenade, Conklin said. Conklin said one of the firearms, a .22 caliber pistol, had its serial numbers filed off and Braverman was charged with illegally altering pistol identification numbers. Two LONG C-Span hearings. One on going to war in Iraq, the other on Terrorism and Nuclear Power Security with Indian Point being highlighted. *** TCM short on square dancing, Bob Wills and The Texas playboys are the band. *** Chris Shays Forum on Iraq & TerrorismBedford Middle School, Westport, CTC-Span2/23/03, 5:41 pm…(missed a little of the intro and I cut off some of the end)4 hrs and 2 min! See the whole thing here: https://www.c-span.org/video/?175181-1/iraq-war-terrorism-town-hall-meeting Intro. He hugs MC. Thanks C-Span. Intros his wife and mother. If Saddam doesn’t co-operate with the inspections…, 50% think we need to wait before taking action. Huge opposition to this war. Jennifer Flasko - killing innocent people will not stop terrorism, it will create more, the country is slipping slowly into facism!, a Kurdish man - supports Saddam’s removal (gets applause), duct tape and plastic sheeting, it’s more about President Bush than Iraq, congress ceded the authority to go to war. He talks for 15 min after asking them is this a good time for him to speak. Talks about the 1st Gulf War, he went to the Peace Corps, oil, Chris Burnham, his committee had 21 meetings on terrorism before 9/11 but no one covered them, 9/11, new approach to terrorism needed, diplomacy is more important than anything else, have to confront terrorists, we know he has chemical, biological weapons, Res 1441. Back to audience comments: Greenwich Peace Action rep, Judy Star - frightening time, in the minority here, Al-Qaeda and Saddam, Brit, supporter, stand behind the troops, complete confidence in W, GDI, put them at risk?, Shays doesn’t think we’ll use nuclear weapons, don’t want to be driven by fear, Rumsfeld, Saddam was our guy, roots of terrorism not talked about, appeasement, we lead the world, we need to be the leaders of this world, Kurd, who stands to profit on the war? He tries to answer some of the questions: responding to fear, an administration that wants more power also needs more oversight, respects W, trusts him, containment?, fly zones, if we don’t find the weapons of mass destruction we’ll be in a mess of trouble, Nunn-Lugar, send a nuclear weapon to this country undetectably via container ships. More comments from the audience: containment, North Korea, Al-Qaeda, cost of the war, Sen Robert Byrd. Shays: 40 countries are helping us, they meet in Tampa, there are people who are working on North Korea. More comments: (Bruce? - Round Hill dancer), when we win this war (in 2 weeks), are we willing to put up with the deficits? Just say no to Saudi oil, addicted to oil, double our national debt, man who was born in Baghdad, liberation not an invasion, Norwalk considering a resolution for peace, Tony Hayden!, why not a Marshall Plan?, work with people not fight them, get whole Muslim world against us. Shays: oil used to rebuild the country. more comments: Peace Train, Carlyle Group, I don’t like that man, (Shays thinks that was over the edge. W gives up drinking…), Zach: thinks president is scaring us, (Shays: I think we are going to see a chemical, nuclear attack in this country in your lifetime, Churchill is his model.), Viet Nam vet: knowledge our leaders have greatly surpasses ours,   fear used, Viet Cong, looks like those days, PR exercises, logic of pre-emptive action, (Shays answers that.), Arab-American, (Shays talks about Israel, will be going to occupied section in April, to interact with Palestinians.), against pre-emptive action, ends don’t justify the means, (third meeting Shays has had today), Israel and Palestine, another imperialist country coming in, (Shays: Nunn-Lugar deserve Nobel Peace Prize), money out of politics, war for oil, containment is working, (Shays asks why the French wouldn’t want Iraq to have nuclear weapons, they built the plant.), violence solve anything, when did you give up?, (Shays: military needs best equipment), Iraqi oil and France, Russia and Saudis? …, Gulf countries want us to come in.), woman of Armenian descent: father fears she will see a clash of civilizations, what do we have to do to protect ourselves?, (Shays agrees it will be difficult to figure out our position in the world.), (Shays talks about Homeland Security and Diane Farrell.), 1st Gulf war was about oil, Henry Kissinger, this one too, trust the president?, not in the public interest over and over, (Shays will stay until everyone has spoken. If we go in, we won’t go into the urban areas! (HA!)), are you listening?, it’s not ok that we’re going into this without the rest of the world, (Shays: The administration needs to do a better job…), President needs to make a better effort at selling this, man with strong accent - not sure what he’s saying, decommissioning of nuclear power plants? (Indian Point), (Shays is critical of our ability to protect them.), alliterative to oil, man whose father rebuilt the banks of Afghanistan in the 60s, Patriot Act 2 is damn scary, focus on Osama, (Shays: rather be voted out of office than to change what he believes.) war is a real messy business, don’t do it, possibly start a Viet Nam in Afghanistan…, 2 front war, correct tax benefit on Hummers vs Prius (he’s for that), wait, follow the money, he disagrees with his constituents, (Southern) man from Greenwich (Round Hill dancer), admires him, Republican against the war, one-sided support of Israel is the source of all this terrorism, we used to be even-handed, quotes a Roman warrior, can’t see how you can kill one innocent Iraqis, the Gulf War and what we are in now are two very different things, history of the Roman Republic, Shays agrees with him, going back to natural laws, where do we get the authority to kill another man, how do you justify that?, Ridge doesn’t impress him as a doer, (Shays: Give Ridge some slack. If I lived in NY, I would have bought the tape and the plastic.), Col Hackworth in Greenwich Post, Bruce? again, Indians hiding Osama?, will be in Afghanistan for 50 years maybe, W drunk driving, Bush Cheney connection to Enron, important to stay engaged with the UN, exhaust every other alternative first. Shays asks if anyone wants to join him at Sherwood Diner for a bite to eat. Many intelligent, eloquent voices. *** Terrorism and Nuclear Power Security hearing3/10/03, edited2:05 Watch the whole thing here: https://www.c-span.org/video/?175419-1/terrorism-nuclear-power-security opening statements from Kucinich, Shays, Janklow, Sue Kelly (Indian Point) - FEMA has to change, (Hubert Miller - NRC, W Craig Conklin - Homeland Security), (Nita Lowey, Eliot Engel, and others have submitted statements), Tierney, Janklow, Kelly - IP questions/problems, when was last unannounced exercise at IP?, offsite events are planned well in advance, Shays - I don’t know much more than when we started, Blumenthal (CT AG) - we’re in the stone age for planning, dirty bombs waiting to be detonated, Witt Report, shut down IP until we have adequate planning, there are other sources of power and they are affordable, Richard Bond, First Selectman of New Canaan, CT, John Wiltse, CT Dept of Emergency Planning, Shays to Blumenthal: What legal rights does CT have? Wiltse: understaffed, not a good network to communicate throughout the nation, Blumenthal: there is virtually no co-ordination between NY and CT now, Shays: would we ever get to go home, Jim Wells - GAO, IP, Michael Slobodien - Entergy Emergency Programs Director (also covers two other nuclear plants), release unlikely, plumes are monitored easily, plume would stay in the Hudson Valley, we disagree with a number of points in the Witt report, safety is foremost concern, Alex Mathiessen - Executive Director of Riverkeeper, need security and evacuation plans that work, 19% of the guards think they can repel an attack, FEMA, (Shays has palm against face), (Lowey and Engel's hearing last week), David Lochbaum - Union of Concerned Scientists, some guards working three shifts in a row, Shays: Should we shut down all nuclear plants? Are there any you would shut down? (more nuclear industry employees), windflow in in the Hudson Valley, Slobedien: plans are to direct evacuees from IP east and south not to New Canaan, no one in CT needs to leave as a result of an accident at IP, acute exposure, long-term cancer deaths, Lochbaum skeptical of Entergy’s claim of the 10 mile zone being safe, Price-Anderson Act federal liability protection, Shays gives it to them. …Adjourned. (repeated at 8pm tonight)
