Experiences not Vacation!

 My beautiful wife, as usual, beat me to the punch and she will be continuing to share our cross-country adventure via her own lens. However, this entry is from my perspective.  I will do my best to keep it as short as possible but just wanted to share the experiences we had with so many loved ones.  It truly was an incredibly adventure traipsing this great country twice! We covered over 6500 miles, countless tanks of gas, I think it was 20+ states, 4-5 hotels (we stayed in the Philly area for 2 weeks in an Airbnb), and a copious amount of great food and beverages. There we two Philllies games, one at home and one in Chicago against the Cubs. We had a trip to “the Shore” a visit to NEPA, several breweries, and I actually squeezed in a business trip to California during our first week 😊.  Probably the coolest thing is that we got to visit with both our parents.  My mom and dad flew up from Florida the weekend of the 4th and we spent some time with Robin’s parents on our drive back to AZ.  I don’t know why I think that is cool but to be able to take this adventure and get to see both sets of parents is awesome.  The other highlight is just so many people we were able to get time with. Our family and incredibly close friends in NEPA and specifically Mountain View Village 😊.  We hit up Avalon, NJ to visit with longtime friends and had the pleasure of meeting some new ones there too!  During our two weeks in Philly, well – we were in the old neighborhood and spent great times with those close friends and others we are very close with from gymnastics and school.  Squeezed in a couple graduations parties and of course, a blowout July 4th and a birthday before we hit the road back west. Of course, there were a couple of other families it would have been great to catch up with and although we didn’t get to connect, we love and miss you all lots 😊.  We jumped back on the road a week ago and drove straight through Tuesday from Plymouth Meeting, PA to Chicago to take in a Phillies/Cubs game. It was the first time Alaina was at Wrigley Field and it didn’t disappoint.  The game was action packed (Phils won 15-10) and the fans in the bleachers were quite colorful.  We took the train in from the city and had a great night at the ballpark.  Wednesday morning we were back on the road, driving to Iowa to visit with Robin’s parents for a quick few hours before driving through the night to Vail, CO.  We had a great day/night in Vail, got in a nice hike, a wonderful dinner and even squeezed in a nap that afternoon.  Friday morning came quick, and we were back on the road for the final 11 hours from Vail to Phoenix, with a quick stop in Flagstaff for Fratelli’s Pizza and Mother Road beer 😊.  As I mentioned, it was an experience, not a vacation.  It was an adventure and the more I reflect on it I can’t help but smile. Yes, we are blessed and fortunate to have the opportunity to do something like this.  Driving across country could be maddening and we did it twice in the span of 3 weeks.  We did mix it up taking the southern route east stopping in Nashville, and Ashville – visiting another great set of friends we just met two years ago too 😊!!!  The thing that gets me most and what I will remember vividly is simply that, those great friends we are so very grateful to have been able to spend time with.  Robin and I have tried throughout the years, working hard to be able to create special moments and experiences.  Homes, cars, and material things come and go, quite easily as we’ve learned.  Moments however, those experiences we are fortunate enough to create on these adventures, they produce joy and fulfillment. Robin and I were talking this morning that recreating something like this again won’t happen next year.  That said, those memories we’ve made may inspire something similar in the near future 😊.

I’m always moving from 0-100 and patience has never been my strong suit with any given situation. However, I’m practicing patience now and learning so much about myself. Waiting makes me think about my artwork. I cranked out these pieces that didn’t move as fast as I wanted them to go. Today someone walked into the @theartisancollective and made a connection with one of my pieces. He mentioned Seurat and I let him know that I loved pointillism. I showed him my artwork and oh boy did I have a freaking AH HA moment. Waiting doesn’t mean that something has left or will not happen. Waiting is simply allowing a process to happen, developing a connection and operating from a higher point of understanding. So it wasn’t that no one liked my artwork. The right person didn’t connect with it. But once the right person connected, we created an experience around the artwork. Our Summer Journey – Final Phase Complete – Thank God 😊!!

 A week ago, today my mom, Alaina, Isabella, Robin and I jumped into rental car to drive up to Las Vegas from Phoenix, about a 5-hour drive.  Yes, a rental car because when Robin & I returned home from Quebec City and got my truck at the airport the AC was busted.  Found out later that it was a blown compressor, to be expected on a 10-year-old car with almost 160k miles on it!!  She’s a good egg though – the car I mean, well, Robin too 😊!!  I always like the drive to Vegas, and this was the first time for my mom, and our girls to see it.  Actually, it was the first time my girls would be in Vegas.  I always believed that I wouldn’t have my girls go to Vegas until they were 21; you see some crazy shit up there just walking on the streets so exposing them to that wasn’t something I wanted.  However, since my sister Tina, and her family, husband Paul, my two nieces, Katie & Stephanie, and Stephanie’s boyfriend David were all headed out for their vacation and to celebrate Stephanie turning 21, I said what the hell.  I mean, I wasn’t one to participate in that “craziness” in Vegas or at home for that matter 😉.  For those that have been to Vegas with me know that that is just not true, and I tend to have a good time up there; this time included 😊.  That said, our girls are 15 & 13 and they know what’s up and after we discussed the trip after returning, they said they really had a good time.

 Any trip we take, wherever it may be, is a blessing. Whatever city, country, or place, for the most part, to be able to actually travel there and do it, we are grateful.  However, those that you are fortunate to spend that time with, well that is the true blessing.  This trip was all about family.  We wouldn’t have made that trip, especially after the summer we already had, if the above circumstances were not happening.  With my family coming out from PA we felt it was a great opportunity to take advantage of and having my mom with us was an added kicker.  The only downside was not having my dad and other siblings along for the ride too.  That would have been an epic Vegas trip.  You may have seen some of the pictures posted on Facebook of our adventures there, but I believe Robin summed it up accurately, by indicating it wasn’t our “typical” trip to Sin City.  However, the biggest different was the family dynamic and that was THE BEST difference. There was excitement, tons of laughter, great & also crazy sights and experiences, late nights, shows, beer, great food, gambling, and a potential entry into the presidential race 😊!! When Robin and I go it is a very similar experience but having all these knuckleheads with us increased, well pretty much everything above tenfold.  The laughter was the biggest but the love, connection, and pure joy we felt was, well, just friggen awesome.  

 My mom, the girls, Robin and I only stayed the weekend and the rest of the family left yesterday.  I can understand the feeling they may have right now getting ready to adjust to reality after an awesome vacation.  I was going to extend this entry with that portion, but I will save that for the coming weeks.  We had an awesome July and a fantastic summer.  Yes, summer is pretty much done here in AZ.  We returned Monday and Robin reported to school Tuesday.  The girls go back to school this coming Tuesday so not much time to decompress.  We’ve heard the saying, “I need a vacation from my vacation.”  Well, we had the great fortune to have a July like that; visiting PA, the Jersey Shore, San Diego, SoCal Wine Country, Quebec City & Las Vegas. It was a whirlwind and we are so very grateful.  As I mentioned above, visiting all these places and seeing all they have to offer was great.  However, the love and connection we were able to experience with so many family and friends, those new ones too 😊, well, that made it unforgettable.
