Last night was lit! The @westphillycommunitypoem was brought to life by members of the community including performances by @lindoyes, @authorcashmere, @queenphierce, and Sistahs Laying Down Hands (with @karensmithdrums, @therealcarlagamble, and Mariama O’Brien). Excerpts from what was written over the last 3 months at our #EverydayPlacesWestPHL artist partner @lapearlbeauty were read aloud and given breath. No longer fragments of text, the connective tissue of our connected hearts was raised to the open air to weave together our future, and spotlight our concerns over what’s been lost to the past. There were so many elements that came together because of the support of all in attendance. We had the full poem published as a zine for neighbors to take home with them. We had free children’s books given away by @wepacreads. Our documentarian @itstherealthe from @utmradio was there to make sure the energy was captured on video. And as @queenphierce said during her segment, there was a total vibe! Through poetry and voice and drum we got a sense of what community can create together. This is only the start! There’s a momentum here that will hopefully return in the Spring with the return of warm weather. Until then, grab a zine and read what your neighbors wrote. We’ll be distributing them around the neighborhood over the next several days! This project couldn’t have been possible without our incredible host @lapearlbeauty. The support of #BarnesWest (@lola38west and @barnesfoundation). Additional aid from @creativephl for our community poets at each pop up through their Neighborhood Arts Initiative. The empowering community garden curated by @newafricacenter for last night’s celebrations. And all of you who contributed so much of your heart and soul into the typewritten text. Thank you!
