Workshop Brief Collages Response
I made 2 diferent collages using past work i had put away: Images of faces doing expressions, used in the past for portrait unit; paper with marks of printing i've kept for other past works as well.
My intention was to create a composition with these, which i experimented before compromising to a definite one.
I then decided to apply some stitching, inspired by Annegret Soltau, but in a diferent way that would work and provoke impact within my collage.
The hand of this one was accidental, i had it cut out already but was distracted doing some more research and when i looked down, i had it on top of my collage and i felt like it worked really well! Happy accidents!
Digital Manipulation: i decide to montage the 2 different collages to create the digital, where i overlaid and played about with diferent settings.

Linocut Printing Development ♠️
Started by using tracing paper to transfer the design into a lino plate, which i then cut and started by doing test prints with black relief ink.
Then i went on to experiment with different background:
As i thought, i'm not please with the "leg" so i decided to remove it.
I like this design but still want to add and play with the colours and backgrounds.

Design Ideas
After going through my moodboard i decided to create thumbnails of possible ideas to design the card suits. My intention is not to totally change the shape of the suit but instead use it to integrate the imagery i want to work with. So, by making this quick sketch thumbnails i can have a better view and thought tis would be a good starting point, with possibly more and different ideas coming up as the work progresses.
For Clubs i quite like the idea of using the BioHazard sign as inspiration as the shape fits perfectly with it, but i still want to explore the gas mask idea too.
For Diamonds i'm still a bit uncertain but i would like to keep it colourful as is such a big shape, dont want it with a flat colour. Quite like the idea of using pentacles as a design as this is also the symbol for this suit.
For Spades, due to its shape im incline to work with skulls or bone structure.
For Hearts, i'm thinking to create a mechanical heart, as i have done in the past, i really like the design so i might create a new diferent one for this project.

Card Box Layout
Here are 2 options/ideas for my box, where i used the images i previously created. I feel the sides should have the same image to make sense. I might change the sides to just black. I feel the red circle one works best.

Workshop Brief Letters/Numbers/Words Response
For this workshop i experimented with diferent images i had already at home from past works and the intention was to create something inspired by Adam Pendleton. I'm using the sentence "Mind the Gap" which i saw in an old photo i took in a train station, but the reason i decided to use its because of the deeper meaning this can have in a social and political sense. Meaning the Gap between people and economic levels and how we treat each other, specially now in Pandemic times, where people create even more of a "Gap" between them, among other things. I felt this sentence was very appropriate in so many levels.
After playing a bit with composition i decided to make a stencil of the sentence and experiment with that, using some spray paint.
Digital manipulation response:
I liked both coloured and black and white, but i like more how you can see the textures on the coloured one.
Overall i'm very pleased with the results on the different stages.

Creating Linocuts...
I decided to make linos of the designs i have created to be able to print and experiment with them. I do enjoy the results and creating these but it is something that requires quite some time and focus. It took me almost 5h to transfer and cut these in a bit of a unconfortable positions, but the results paid off. What i like the most about having the linocuts is that makes it possible for me to explore other solutions with them manually, meaning without having to rely on digital equipment.

Looking at artists that use colour and shape in their work...
For one of my concepts I’m exploring colours i can use and how i can use them to integrate on my work. Working with very colourful ideas is a bit out of my confort zone so i thought i would give it a shot.
Here are some abstract artists i looked at for inspiration:
Howard Hodgkin - British painter and printmaker.
Wassily Kandinsky - Russian painter and art theorist, credited as the pioneer of abstract art.
Sarah Morris - British abstract painter
Danielle foye - freelance watercolor artist
Sonia Delaunay - French artist, multi-disciplinary abstractist and key figure in the Parisian avant-garde. Her exploration of the interaction between colours has created a sense of depth and movement throughout her work.
Was fun to find and explore the work of this artists, as its not my usual or “go to” type of work, i would not normally working this abstract, but its always good to find diferent approaches. I was happy to find the work above from Sonia Delaunay and to see her own approach on card suits, made to her style.
