Workshop Brief Collages
Annegret Soltau (born 16 January 1946) is a German visual artist, born in Lüneburg, Germany. Her work marks a fundamental reference point in the art of the 1970s and 1980s. Photomontages of her own body and face sewn over or collaged with black thread are the most well-known works of the German artist.
“My main interest is the integration of body processes in my work, in order to connect body and spirit as equal parts.”
”When I tear out the face of my own portrait, it is not the aspect of destruction which interests me, but I want to find new meanings and significant connections.“
I find these interesting and decided i would use it for inspiration to create a collage of my own for this workshop brief. I think they are odd and create a reaction to the viewer as its something everyone can relate and is familiar with, a face, but totally wack and out of place within it self and the first impressions will be of negative feelling towards it which will then provoke curiosity to understand it, and i like that.

Beauty in the mundane - final prints
I've chosen these prints as my finals, i had a few that i felt satisfied enought but these for me since i made them i felt they reach the closest to the desired effect. Trying to achieve that same impact has the photographs did was in fact a challenge as i thought i would be, but this prints come ver close to it. It has the "darkness" effect and to me, the blue texture in the back ground (originally was the texture from a tree) works really well and adds to the syfy effect i was wanting to get from it. Developing for printing...
Today i explore some possible ideas to produce prints from my concept. Using the previous photos, of which i'm very satisfied with the result, i experimented digitally, manipulating them using the resources i have at the moment available, such as: Canva.com; SnapSeed; Photo Editor.
Also found this web page which i thought could be useful until im able to have access to Photoshop (this Pandemic is making things harder but we improvise!😉)
Will choose some of these to product some prints on Thursday, when we have some studio time...can't wait!
Also made this manipulation but simple mirroring the my previous collage. I'm quite fond of the result from such a simple alteration, i like the environment it creates and the composition, ot almost looks likes a creature of some sorts. Think it really connects with my work.

Final Personal Evaluation
I must say, this brief was a roller coaster! Mostly due to the current situation of how everything has changed and the way our classes are being set (doing a creative course through zoom can be a tad frustrating!), so for me in the beginning was a bit demotivating. Although i feel i still produced some nice work for the online workshops we had, and some that i totally despise to be totally honest…
I really enjoyed the workshop where we had to go out and see the world in a different way, find things that would represent “beauty in the mundane”, and ones that would show the “line, dot and shape”. The photographs I got from this are very much to my taste, and it was interesting to go out with the perspective of looking at things differently.
Overall I feel like I produced a large amount of work from the workshops by the time we got presented with our brief and what was expected of this unit. By this time, i decided to approach the “beauty in the mundane” theme in a different way, using mundane objects and turning them into something else, into life creatures, giving them the dark visual effect and shadows, with a hint of syfy connotation to them, with which i’m very satisfied with the results. The result of the photos for these were so satisfactory to me that it made it a real struggle to create prints with the same visual impact as the photographs!
I decided to explore these prints with Risograph, being that it would be easy to create similar prints with different layers, but also wanted to challenge myself with using screen printing with the same stencils. For the Screen prints, and because i decided to use A3 size stencil, and i was only able to use screens that are not much bigger than that, it was hard to create perfect prints (without ink missing or without it bleeding in the paper), some of it created happy accidents, some not so much, but over all, i am please with the results and i feel i still managed to get some of that visual impact i desired similar to the photos.
I feel that if this was a course that was being held the “regular” way (classes in college, you know...like before the Pandemic?) i would have gotten much better results and would have had more time to work on this brief, i would have been able to maybe create a variety of backgrounds to which to print on, as i would have the equipment and material more available than i have from home, so it was somehow a defiant task, but one i feel i overcome the best i could, and had positive results, as well as positive feedback from other.

*Transform/Creatures* ideas III
Using mundane objects my intention is to create the idea of these creatures and surrealistic environments, giving this objects a new dimension and visual interest thats the observer wouldn't normally take in consideration.

Some work from last Thursday...
Being that, due to the current circumstances, we get very limited time on the studio, i try to make the most of it, even it just experimenting, or producing randomly work that i might use later on, integrate in my projects.
Last thursday i made some prints out of an woodblock i made 2 years ago that i really like. my idea is to integrate those prints into Pats class brief "Portraits" somehow, maybe further develop it. With these, i made some very good simple prints of it in Black and in Red.
When i was happy with them, i decided to play with them, since i still had ink to use, so i applied shapes of paper on top of the woodblock to cover some parts and print like that, and the results are pretty fun!
Because the ink wasnt dried when it was time to leave, i covered my prints with stencil papel to protected them and on pealing them off at home, the ink left some interesting marks on it.
