Animal of the Day!
‘Akohekohe (Palmeria dolei)
Tumblr media
Conservation Status- Critically Endangered
Habitat- Maui
Size (Weight/Length)- 18 cm
Diet- Nectar
Cool Facts- The ‘akohekohe is the largest honeycreeper species found on the Hawaiian island of Maui. They specialize on the uniquely shaped flowers throughout the tropical highlands. The distinct crest of feathers at the top of their beak aids in pollination when they stick their heads deep inside flowers to lick at the nectar. ‘Akohekohe are relatively aggressive and chase away other honeycreeper species in their territory. Unfortunately, alongside many other honeycreepers, the ‘akohekohe is at threat from avian malaria from mosquitoes and invasive species like rats. They were added to the Endangered Species Act in 1967 and eradication attempts of invasive species are helping to increase the ‘akohekohe population.
Rating- 13/10 (Vaccination experimentation hopes to solve the avian malaria issue.)

i’ve been avoiding any scvi spoilers as much as i can, so i was lucky enough to not have had wattrel and kilowattrel spoiled for me. i still haven’t seen every new pokemon yet so i’m not venturing into the badlands (tumblr tags) but i still want to talk about these guys!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
first off, very interesting choices of species to base them off of! most bird pokemon reference common and familiar birds, like a crow or a duck (/pos btw, this is not a bad thing) but i love that newer gen bird pokemon are including lesser-known species, like hawaiian honeycreepers and cormorants.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(baile style oricorio & ʻiʻiwi)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(cramorant & double-crested cormorant)
so wattrel is based on a storm petrel. there are quite a few different species, but i’d say the most direct reference is the leach’s storm petrel because of the forked tail and the general range of their habitat (although i don’t think that really matters much)
Tumblr media
we’ve needed more flying/electric types for sure and this is a very silly fun little guy, exactly what i love in a first-stage, early-route bird pokemon. cute design with neat colors!!
👇
Tumblr media
they also incorporated petrel flight behavior into its animation which i’m a huge fan of! i can’t find any good videos or gifs showing their battle animations (and i also want to avoid searching for them) but they soar for a bit and then flap frantically like how petrels do to navigate through choppy water.
and kilowattrel is absolutely striking, pun intended. i’m extremely happy with this evolution
Tumblr media
i never expected they’d make a frigatebird pokemon! frigatebirds are massive seabirds that have the largest wing:body ratio of any bird. they can have a wingspan of almost 8 feet! they can also ride air currents for days, weeks, even literal months without landing once. it’s insane to me
Tumblr media
kilowattrel’s coloration is based on the female magnificent frigatebird. they have a beautifully angular shape and i think kilowattrel’s design captures that very well with the perfect amount of roundness
Tumblr media Tumblr media
frigatebirds don’t typically show up near spain or portugal (where paldea is based off of) (so my attempt at guessing the storm petrel species didn’t really matter anyway lmao)
the few things that are weird to me about their designs are the eyes and yellow markings on the throat that go up their head. unfortunately, the eyes of every character in scvi (and pokemon legends as well) have issues with adapting to lighting and shadows. i think if this was addressed it’d look a lot better because they’re just way too bright sometimes. also the way the yellow comes up above the eyes should either be exaggerated or erased. i think it’s so subtle that it’s just unnecessary. but this is literally me searching for things to complain about if i absolutely had to say something bothered me about their designs. otherwise i think they’re fantastic, and as pretty mediocre as gen 9 is, i’m very happy we got these guys out of it

9 & 30 for the artist ask!
9. What are your file name conventions
Oh, that is a good one! I always name my files "YMD" (20221115, for example) so I have them in chronological order. Sometimes I add a suffix, like ship name or fandom, to know without preview pictures what the file is about.
30. What piece of yours do you think is underrated
Answered already, but I also think my watercolour works were never really seen on tumblr🤭

Hawaiian Honeycreeper
Hawaiian honeycreepers are small, passerine birds endemic to Hawaiʻi. They are closely related to the rosefinches in the genus Carpodacus. The group is divided into three tribes, but only very provisionally so. The wide range of bills in this group, from thick, finch-like bills to slender, downcurved bills for probing flowers have arisen through adaptive radiation, where an ancestral finch has evolved to fill a large number of ecological niches. Some 20 species of Hawaiian honeycreeper have become extinct in the recent past, and many more in earlier times, between the arrival of the Polynesians who introduced the first rats, chickens, pigs, and dogs, and hunted and converted habitat for agriculture.
Members of Psittirostrini, known as "Hawaiian finches", are granivorous with thick finch-like bills, and songs like those of cardueline finches. The group once covered the islands. Finch-billed drepanids include the Laysan finch, the Nihoa finch, the Maui parrotbill and the palila, which may be the last remaining species left alive in this group.
Hemignathini includes the Hawaiʻi creeper and its allies, such as the nukupuʻu. These are generally green-plumaged birds with thin bills, and feed on nectar and insects. Members of this group usually have green, yellow, orange, red, and gray feathers.
Species in the tribe Drepanidini are nectarivorous, and their songs contain nasal squeaks and whistles. Members of this group often have red black, yellow, white and orange plumage. It includes the ʻiʻiwi.  Many species of this subfamily have been noted to have a plumage odor that has been termed the "Drepanidine odor", and is suspected to have a role in making the bird distasteful to predators.

Maui Forest Birds Critically Threatened
Maui Forest Birds Critically Threatened
The kiwikiu, or Maui parrotbill, is only found in East Maui. There are less than 312 remaining in the wild
A new interagency monitoring report on Hawaiian forest birds indicates that remaining populations of at least two native endemic species of Maui forest birds are in rapid decline.
The surveys conducted in the report were the largest and most comprehensive interagency effort to research East…

I’m probably going to get some angry people in my inbox for this, but tbh I’ve accepted it because that’s just how it goes, and because this has been sitting on my chest for a long time
(I’m only being about 20% serious here no worries)
blease...artists that draw inspo from birds for creature design...delve into your hearts and nurture your love for birds...so that you can be inspired to seek out different bird species to use in your works...
I love every single one of them but there are so many bearded vulture designs out there...flocks of secretary bird designs...
I mean what I said - they’re beautiful and I love all of them. But friends? Why limit yourselves? Why pick a sun conure when you could do a nanday?
Tumblr media
Why do a rainbow lorikeet when you could do a blue streaked lory instead?
Tumblr media
Or a dusky one, for a more Halloween-esque look?
Tumblr media
Fuckin hell have you guys heard of keas? The world’s only alpine parrot, supplements its diet with meat? For those of you looking for that kind of edge?
Tumblr media
Or, getting out of parrots (oops), what about a sooty owl instead of a barn owl? On the spookier side of ethereal, and in grayscale!
Tumblr media
Instead of a bald or harpy eagle, what about a martial eagle? I’ve worked with one of them, and trust me - just as intimidating!
Tumblr media
Rather than a peregrine falcon, what about a northern goshawk? The pic doesn’t show it well, but these guys sport blood-red eyes
Tumblr media
Have you guys seen how witchy a vulturine guineafowl looks?
Tumblr media
You thought all toucans looked silly? The collared aracari would like to have a word
Tumblr media
Sulfur-crested cockatoos not punk enough for you? Like the black palm cockatoo but want more flash? I get that. Have you tried the red-tailed black cockatoo?
Tumblr media
Want something tiny and fierce? Get out of that hummingbird google search. We can do better than your everyday ruby-throated. Try this red-legged honeycreeper
Tumblr media
Want a bird that’ll fit into your cyberpunk universe? Here take a paradise tanager. Or tbh any tanager. Tanager colors tend to be nuts
Tumblr media
Want something ballsy and bold? No, put that crow/raven down. Have a mockingbird. Bonus: their wings and tails flash when they fly and they screech their displeasure at literally anything and everything
Tumblr media
I could keep going and take up even more of your dash with bird pics, but TLDR; There are so many good birds out there that deserve your love and attention, and incorporating them into your creature/character design will make it even more awesome than it already is.
Also, I am MORE than happy to give you guys bird recs if you have an idea of what you want but don’t know where to start! Or if you don’t even have ideas yet. Clearly I love birds so it'll hardly be a burden on me. Ask box is open :)

Zookeeping Nonsense
So I was at the zoo with my gf the other day and we were joking about all the birds/beasts we eventually want to keep, and she made a passing comment about us needing our own zoo. Completely joking of course, but me being the incorrigible nerd that I am I started to wonder if my selection of favorites might actually be viable in a smaller zoo setting. So for those zookeepers or any other keepers of animals on my list, your opinions on it would be most appreciated. Keep in mind, this list isn’t all of my favorite animals or even all the animals I want to keep, but those I would feel relatively confident in providing adequate care for (with help) and that would do well in captivity. I do not actually intend on having a zoo, I just want to see your thoughts.

submission from @telepathic–heart
Hey, check out these cool endemic birds from Haleakala Forest Reserve, Maui, Hawaii!
Kiwikiu
Tumblr media
Kiwikiu live up to 16 years, and produce offspring every one or two years on average. They form monogamous pairs and defend a territory up to 20 acres. There are only about 500 known birds left in the world.
‘Apapane
Tumblr media
‘Apapane are most well known for their songs, which can be pretty and methodical or harsh and mechanical-sounding. In most cases, the male who is the most aggressive and sings the loudest is the one who gets the female’s attention. About 1,080,000 of these birds exist in Hawaii’s protected mountain forests.
I'iwi
Tumblr media
I'iwi have deeply curved bills to collect nectar from flowers, and have a haunting call which has been described as “A child playing a rusty harmonica in the woods.” They’ve experienced the greatest decline in population of any Hawaiian honeycreeper. There are about 350,000 of these birds left.
‘Akohekohe
Tumblr media
'Akohekohe are often characterized by their white crest on their foreheads, and their volcanic pallet. They live only in a 50 square kilometer space on Haleakala volcano, and they have a population of about 3700.
Po'ouli
Tumblr media
Po'ouli are the rarest birds in the world, and as of 2004 there were only two in existence. Their behaviors are largely undocumented due to their rarity. These birds haven’t been seen since the study in 2004, and are possibly extinct.

This sweet bird is a crested honeycreeper, aka. the ʻakohekohe", and it lives in Hawaiʻi! It has a wide variety of songs, described in its wikipedia article as: a pair of whee-o, whee-o; a chuckling sound; took, took; chouroup; or more rarely: hur-hur-hur-gluk-gluk-gluk.
A vast amount of its habitat was destroyed by deforestation, resulting also in loss of food sources. To its great misfortune, in this case, it is also beautiful, and therefore much sought-after by exotic bird collectors. It is similar to bees in that it is also a necativore. So it's time to talk about 'the birds and the bees' for real. ;)
