Just got to @matthewsyard for today's shift and thought I'd finally get round to photographing this parade of shops along Station Rd. . . From what I remember reading there was a cinema here but sadly over the decades the maintenance of these buildings hasn't been the best with the smaller properties closer to the bus station looking like they could collapse any day. . . My impetus to finally capture them has been prompted by the work to develop the site starting sometime soon. These section will remain but sadly everything to the left of this picture will be demolished to make way for two residential towers and a public square creating a direct route into the Whitgift Centre with the idea being there would be a direct visual route into the Westfield. . . Something I knocked up last night based on part of the masterplan I'd seen for the college green. The arch in the mssterplan was at the other end of the deck over the underpass but I felt you could have one at this end too. . . The idea is this arch acts as a few things. It could be a source of wayfinding used to displayed directions to restaurants, bars, civic and other types of buildings. With Wellesley Rd being a big fast town centre highway this might be a welcome landmark encouraging motorist usually passing through to stop to visit one day based on what is displayed. . . Sometimes you get buskers in this area so it could be used as a stage. The screen could display information about the person performing. . . @westfieldstratfordcity has a digital water feature in it's North End like pedestrianised area. The screens on this arch could transform into things like a waterfall with the therapeutic sound of falling water or a jungle for the concrete jungle with birds flying between plants chirping and flowers blooming. . . Throwback to many years before @boxparkcroydon. I don't think @boxpark had even been built when the Warehouse theatre occupied the site now home to Boxpark next to East Croydon station. . Decided to post this as I read a comment about a pic I posted on a nostalgia group inaccurately stating this theatre was demolished to make way for Boxpark. In fact the Boxpark was planned/designed and built many, many years after it's demolition. . Nostalgia is a funny thing, some say it was better back in the old days. I'm sure when they thought things were better someone was saying the same thing back then. We can say that about Croydon as the reality is the retail core was strong back in the day and yh we lost many venues like the warehouse theatre.
