University of Florida researcher develops AI tool to improve care for Parkinson’s and movement disorders

A University of Florida researcher, Diego Guarin, Ph.D., has developed VisionMD, an open-source AI-powered tool that analyzes videos of patients with Parkinson’s disease and other movement disorders.
Designed to address subjectivity in traditional clinical assessments, VisionMD delivers precise, objective motion metrics using standard video recordings from smartphones, laptops, or Zoom. The software runs locally, preserving patient privacy without needing internet access.
Guarin, working with the Fixel Institute for Neurological Disease at UF Health, created the tool to help clinicians efficiently monitor motor changes and improve treatment decisions, such as optimizing deep brain stimulation (DBS) settings. Neurologists in Germany, Spain, and Italy are already using it, praising its accuracy and ease of use.
Because it’s open-source, VisionMD can be freely customized and is being expanded to include more clinical motor assessments. Clinicians say it could revolutionize movement disorder care by making advanced video analysis fast, accessible, and unbiased.
