FIFTY DAYS AT ILIAM: first of all the philadelphia museum of art is awesome and i think everyone should go to it if you have the chance. second of all. the whole fifty days at iliam series is very good. as a longtime greek mythos nerd i just love these stories that have been repeated over and over and take new forms and have new meanings every time. and this picture especially spoke to me. the red and the way it smears across the page, the amount of motion and emotion contained within this static piece. my parents took a picture of me talking about it while gesturing wildly in front of it and i look like a disney supervillain and its great. oh oh also i like how it doesn't say what it is that is like a fire that consumes all before it. it could be love it could be anger it could be war it could be anything. but its like a fire that consumes all before it and you can see it in this picture. Dumb and very esoteric chemiball comic about the mechanism of organic mercury poisoning

Selenium (Se) is a necessary micronutrient. It’s involved in the amino acid selenocysteine (Sec), which is like cysteine (Cys) but instead of sulfur, it’s selenium. Selenocysteine is involved in selenoenzymes, which are important antioxidants.

Oxidants are highly reactive oxygen radicals that are sometimes accidentally made by the mitochondria. They really like to oxidize and destroy things like proteins, fats, and DNA. As it turns out, we need those things to not be destroyed.

Antioxidants are important because they’re useless and don’t do anything important other than be tempting targets for oxidants. They take the hit so you don’t have to. (though knowing biochemistry, I’m sure that most of them actually do everything, because it would just make too much sense otherwise.)

Organic mercury poisoning is bad because it permanently inhibits your selenoenzymes. This leaves the cell vulnerable to oxidation which is particularly bad for your brain cells.

In this case, methyl mercury (Hg-CH3) has previously bonded to the sulfur in Cysteineball and has now come near the selenocysteine ball.

Fun fact: the covalent binding affinities between mercury and selenium are about A MILLION times greater than with sulfur. I’m not exaggerating, it’s literally cited as ONE MILLION TIMES GREATER. So yeah, Mercuryblob immediately jumps to seleniumball and basically never lets go.

BIOGRAPHY.

despite what people think, cyrus came from humble roots. his father was a firefighter and his mother a teacher, they worked hard and passed strong values down to him and his sibling.

cyrus had always been exceptional in school but he was best with numbers most of all. he had a knack for formulas and problems. he spent his time in mathletes and at academic decathlons instead of sports

he graduated amongst the top of his class and went on to attend one of the most renowned universities in the country. he got his masters of business administration with a concentration in accounting and finance

while getting his masters, he fell in love and got married to an amazing woman with twin daughters who he adopted and was privileged enough to have them call him dad.

cyrus worked himself up the top of his field and took the position as cfo for drake industries with his good friend alexander

once the twins moved out of the house, his wife divorced him. he never stopped loving her but he was always working and struggled to split his time between home and work

he tries to check in on his kids several times a week, and schedules time to have meals or do something with them at least every other week, learning from his mistakes

cyrus is protective over his girls and the people he cares about, even other employees.

he has a very neutral resting face that makes him look unapproachable but he is generally a nice guy and has been known to goof around on a rare occasion
