Where do the names "Autobot" and "Decepticon" even come from? Are there any sort of root words that go with them?
Dear Etymology Enthusiast,
This answer is complicated by language barriers that span galaxies. As Galvatron alluded to—albeit in tones I would never use—Cybertronian words can be very linguistically dense; a translation that conveyed every nuance of our equivalent for "Autobot" would take over seventeen minutes for a human to say! As such, "Autobot" and "Decepticon" are only approximations of the neocybex names of these factions.
In many universes, my faction is named for the ideals of freedom and autonomy—hence, "Autobot" is derived from the term "autonomous". Sometimes this reflects a casting off of Quintesson rule or triumph over a caste system, but in other contexts—sometimes simultaneously—it reflects a darker facet of Cybertronian history. A famous bot once said that autonomy was a gift, a spark of sentience kindled by Primus himself. That bot's name was Nova Prime, and he used that belief to justify the subjugation of hundreds of alien worlds.
The suffix translated as "-bot" encompasses ideas such as "person", "individual", "independent agent". It could be considered an adaptation of the common English-language "man", of course—you might be familiar with the Aerialmen, the Dinomen, and the Sparkamen—but "bot" conveys that it most commonly refers to mechanical lifeforms. While typically used in the names of teams and factions, occasionally an individual might be called "Dinobot" or "Dreadbot"; such sobriquets can be seen as similar to a human being carrying a family name as their first name, such as "Jackson".
As for "Decepticon"
much has been said of the phrase "you are being deceived." In many universal clusters, this is indeed the earliest origin of the term. "Decepticon" suffers to a greater degree from the imperfections of localization. In many universes, Cybertronian language uses nuances related to subject and object that fail to translate, especially when neologism is concerned; "Decepticon" principally suggests "deceptive" in English, but in its original Cybertronix, the waveform can simultaneously be read as "the deceived".
The "-con" suffix is not dissimilar to "-bot", though it carries subtly but significantly different implications. "Person" is an adequate translation, but its meaning is much broader, not being restricted to living creatures; you may know of data-cons, information storage devices commonly used in my home reality. The closest equivalent to the suffix in your language would be "entity"—or, more bluntly, "thing". As such, the translation "-con" is derived from your language's "construct", a created object or idea.
The reasoning for the use of this suffix varies across the multiverse. On versions of Cybertron where Functionism took hold, Cybertronians of lower labor castes, or with alternate modes considered fit only for use by others, were more likely to have "con" names or be assigned categories like "Constructicon", "Agricon" or "Recordicon". Conversely, in universes where the Decepticons originate as a military junta, the use of "-con" carries the suggestion of component; all Decepticons are considered to be a part of Megatron's war machine. These implications, of course, carry over to the Mini-Cons. While I am proud to count Safeguard as a friend and partner, for much of my world's history, Decepticon and Autobot alike treated his kind as "smart tools", as mere objects to be collected. Regardless, the Great War created extreme political polarization of the "-con" suffix, and nearly no self-described Autobot adopts it; even as Decepticons freely use "bot" to describe themselves, "con" is almost exclusively used by Autobots as a term of animosity.
One more suffix you may have heard of is "-tron"; here, the root is "positron"—which, before the introduction of microscope alt-modes, we simply understood to be the stuff of sparks. The Cybertron factions of realities like the G1 World and BT World draw their names from a well of indigeneity; unlike the invading, colonizing Quintessons, the Cybertrons are the true sparks of the planet and derive their name thus. The Destrons, then, are destructive sparks who oppose the planet. Naturally, "-bot" and "-con" recur in these worlds too, following similar etymological patterns.

I mean in my earlier drafts for my TFP AU, Sky-Byte could speak Japanese because that’s where he first landed when he arrived on earth until he was found by the Decepticons.
With scenes involving the Autobots, Miko would have to translate.
*throws you these and leaves (incorrect quotes my beloved)*
Tumblr media Tumblr media
ahahah it suits them so well 😭😭
although honestly, I don't think speaking japanese would be difficult for Sky-Byte, since he probably knows it đŸ€”

Hi, nice to see you again. I don't know if my previous question disappeared, so I decided to think of something different. You know how curious and honest kids are. What if our human reader takes their kid to the base, meets the Autobots, and starts comparing them to other things? For example, asking Hound why he's not a dog if his name is Hound, or asking Bumblebee why he's not a Bumblebee. I think it's a great idea. I don't know what you think.đŸ„șđŸ«¶
That's adorable!
A kid pointing at Optimus and going "TWUCK!" Or Whirl and going "HELICOPPER!" Or giggling at Ratchet and making the weewoo siren noises.
Toddling up and trying to climb on their armor. Mechs too scared to even move. And they thought the adult humans were small!
I can see Jazz being absolutely enamored with kids. Obviously we know Bumblebee loves kids, but Jazz is such a tough guy with a lot of history under all that bluster. I think he'd be shaken to his spark, at least a little, underneath his joking and outgoing personality. Having something so tiny and helpless wander fearlessly into his servos. And looking to you in disbelief as you look on and smile, trusting him with your sparkling.
Humans are a code he's never going to break.
(Whirl immediately starts trying to teach them to swear in Cybertronix)

things they do that give you butterflies/make you feel giddy
cannon because I said so.
Rodimus:
-in mass displacement he’ll come up behind you, wrap his servos around your waist and whisper in your ear in a low voice “guess who”
-he’ll sometimes pet your head if he’s in a meeting
-when you guys cuddle he’ll whisper sweet words in cybertronix in your ear
Starscream:
-when you guys slow dance they’ll dip you and gently kiss your neck
-calls you darling sometimes when he wants you to do something
-sometimes he’ll pick you up and kiss your head
-he lets you sleep on his chassis sometimes
-if you do a good job on something he’ll say something along the lines of “whose a good little human? I guess you deserve a reward..”
Swerve:
-drops random facts on you
-compliments on how your the prettiest/handsomest(?) human he’s seen in his life time
-looks at you lovingly when you talk to him
-when you cuddle he rubs his servo up and down your hips/back
Rung:
-when you talk abt something that interests you he’ll say ‘yeah?’ Or ‘oh yeah?’ And chuckle when you get a bit flustered
-sometimes whispers in your ear/speaks in a low voice just to make you flustered
-caresses your cheeks gently
-his laughter
Megatron:
-writes Romaric poems about you and reads them out loud when you guys are about to sleep
-sometimes manspreads and crosses his arms
-says “oh really?” When you talk about something
-when you kiss him his engine purrs loudly like REALLY fucking loud
-get really close to your face
Ratchet + Drift:
-in mass displacement sometimes when you guys cuddle with drift behind you and ratchet on your thighs, drift would kiss your neck while ratchet attacks your stomach
-when they want your attention drift will grab you from whatever you’re doing and place you on his chassis while ratchet sits on drift’s laps gently petting your hair
(please do not plagiarize, run my work through ai, or steal my writing :) )

Update: You are officially my Skullcruncher moot.
Skullcruncher’s real name (given to him by Book Keeper) was actually “Yato” which is basically the Predacon term to describe a “strong yet wild individual” since Skullcruncher’s behaviour was (and still is) kind of unpredictable.
After losing Book Keeper and roaming around for a couple years, he was found by Maccadam who gave him the name “Skullcruncher” because of his tendency to bite every time he tried to come near. Although Maccadam couldn’t compare to Book Keeper (no one does really) he found their personalities to be similar (Maccadam was my inspo for Book Keeper :D) and so he stayed until Maccadam’s death.
When Perceptor took over the tavern after the war and Maccadam’s death, Skullcruncher took an immediate dislike to him (he did bite his arm off so-) and consequently while he was supposed to do his job guarding the Oil House, he ran away and ended up going back to his old home where he lived with Book Keeper and the rest of the Sea Predacons. The Argon Sea :).
After staying there alone for a couple of days (by the ruins of the house him and Book Keeper used to live in together no less D:) he met Sky-Byte. Sky-Byte originally never thought he would ever return back home after what had happened, but ultimately, he decided to go and see it one last time. At that time, he had met and tamed Suijin already. Skullcruncher initially had been prowling around looking for energon when he ran into Sky-Byte which immediately alerted Suijin and caused the two to go into a stand off. Sky-Byte, however, managed to diffuse the situation by throwing a cube of energon off into the distance, causing Skullcruncher to chase after it.
But that wasn’t the end of it because as Sky-Byte and Suijin continued their journey, Skullcruncher ended up following them because he wanted more energon (he’s such a puppy).
So long story short, Sky-Byte left the Argon Sea with not one but two crocodile friends :). Although Suijin wasn’t too happy about that (he’s a little jealous boi).
Little thing about Skullcruncher, he can understand commands in Predacon Cybertronix and English as opposed to Suijin who can only understand Predacon Cybertronix.
Sky-Byte loves them both very much :). Everyone else
.not so much.
*gasps* I’m Skullcruncher moot đŸ„čđŸ„č
I just wanna give him many pets— sadly he would kill me.
He would kill Vagabond too— unless.. idk what would make him not kill Vagabond honestly—

Things that happened in the Official Transformers RPG's lore 2: Crossover Boogaloo
Since I've got both the crossover and BW books, and even finished them, and also the last post blew up for no reason, it's time for a sequel with some revisions.
Beast Wars book is more-or-less straightforward add-on for beast modes, Dinobots, and the crossover book is also a straightforward module focused on gameplay with the notable exception of the fact that Pretenders are here for some reason. Well, to the points!
Things that are kinda-sorta canon: Earthspark (Nightshade is an extant person), RID15 (Alchemor crash is an event, Simacore is a person), Animated (Sari also exists), ROTF (same with Alice) and Go-Bots (Zod is a Titan).
RPG lore treats Dark Energon and Angolmois as interchangeable, and therefore refers to all Angolmois items from Japanese Beast Wars as Dark Energon. This is odd, as the book later directly references the manga which established quite firmly that Angolmois is a separate thing.
Mindwipe is invited to scientific conferences.
Sky-Byte is a Maximal, or at least formally listed among them.
Thunderhowl is once again Captain America, hates swarming enemies, and he is either speaks to Onyx Prime in his diary, or Leo Prime (Lio Convoy), mentioned in the rulebook before, is a proper formal Prime who leads the Maximals.
No mention is made of Rattrap's Decepticon allegiance from the past books, but he is apparently a spy by speciality.
Botanica is a triffid.
Paddles, the dinobot, uses they/them pronouns. It's unclear if it's deliberate or not.
The notable odd Threat Level: Optimus Primal the average starship captain by himself is 22, which is more than Starscream's 21. Dinobot is 7, basic BW Megatron is 10, Botanica is 12. Abominus is 15, less then the previously the most weak combiner Ruination's 16, making Abominus a very lame combiner. But the crown is taken by basic Quickstrike, with 1. Yes, 1.
Everyone still have languages listed, and Cybertronix exist as apparently another Cybertronian language, but the only people who know it are the Vehicon generals, Silverbolt and Botanica. But this is not the most notable language-related thing, as Waspinator and Terrorsaur both know English for some reason.
Cube, apparently, is one of Cybertron's greatest exports, and there are alien adaptations of the sport around (presumably, for people who cannot become a car at command).
Decepticons are a legitimate monarchy, and the title of Emperor Of Destruction is a genuine title, because Duke Of Destruction is a Genuine Noble Title
It's more of an observable gameplay oddity, but "EMT Crash Course" perk is universal for humans and Cybertronians. It affects specifically organic medicine, Cybertronians are healed by mechanical aptitude, so you can trust (some) giant robots with your first aid kit!
The BW rulebook has a passing preoccupation with alternate realities - and Uprising even gets it's owl blurb - and therefore has a character sheet for a Intelligent Scientist Grimlock, among others.
Maximals tend to choose for their altmode mammals, birds and fish.
And now, the answers to a couple of questions, because I saw the tags, and some corrections.
@nanzyn & @shadowboxmind : Yeah, the threat level sometimes seem completely random (Stunticons look really lowballed). I think I'll write down all the tables together later for this bizarre power scale.
@theropodtheroblogs : No, Jazz is still also the head of Spec Ops. Prowl is a military strategist, and just a guy now, I guess.
@libermachinae : The original wording for the local Prowlastator seem to imply Prowl kind of happened upon Devastator? The exact words are "when needed" and "been able", so jury's out. He is apparently not a part of Devastator anymore at the time Termagax's lecture, which happens at Autobot City after the local analogue of Headmasters saga and may or may not bear relation to the local counterpart of Combiner Wars.
Now, the corrections: points 4 and 9 from the main post aren't exactly true. The who-is-who list features Alpha Trion, and while some people like Bulkhead are specifically are the Ark crewmember, there's also a mention of "Arcee's Resistance", but not what is it or where it's located, so do what you want. And Tracks while isn't strictly speaking a triple-changer, he is randomly mentioned in such a manner it could be inferred so (and this is his only mention in-text). Technically, the same is the case with Botanica's triffidness here - she has apparently interchangeable stats with Flytrap, whose most notable trait is that he's a triffid. I apologize for any confusion caused.

Tarantulas was presumed destroyed in the episode “Other Victories”, but clearly some vestige of him remains! “Operation: Ninth Eye” was reportedly an idea of Mike Priest’s, a reference to Tarantulas oddly having nine eyes instead of eight in beast mode. Believe it or not, the project that became BEAST WARS: Second Chances began over a year ago. In September 2008, Josh van Reyk, one of the creative minds behind Transformers: Mosaic, pitched the idea of a Beast Wars one-shot to a handful of us writers and we ran with the idea!  Hundreds of email messages ensued as we hammered out the story.  A lot of great stuff ended up on the "cutting room floor" as we tried to cram as much Beast Wars awesomeness into 22 short pages as possible. So, that's the beginning of how this baby came together, but what about me?  What's my story?  In case you're wondering, here's a taste: My name is Shaun Flaherty.  I am 30 years old and newly married.  I went to school for acting and currently manage a health club. But before all that, there were Transformers. Being born at the very end of the Seventies, I was a Star Wars kid, but soon after the Jedi returned, I discovered something else.  On my first day of kindergarten in 1984, my father presented me with Optimus Prime and 25 years later I still love robots in disguise. Fast-forward a decade or so, past weekday afternoons and a Movie, past reruns and Generation 2.  I discovered Beast Wars late one Saturday morning on a crappy little TV with terrible reception and it was love at first sight. Five delightful seasons (including Beast Machines) and then it was gone. DreamWave promised more, but delivered only one short story.  IDW promised more, but delivered something that wasn't quite the Beast Wars that I had in mind. Our goal with BEAST WARS: Second Chances is to recapture magic, even if only for a moment.  Our goal is for Second Chances to feel like Beast Wars to you. Although the finished product is still a way's away, we hope you'll like what you'll see. -- Shaun Flaherty

Bah! I don't like how "Cybertronian Language" is just English in sheep's clothing. So I decided to make a Transformers-themed conlang! However, I also want y'all to get involved, making up new words for the language and communicating it to other Transformers fans.
I'm making a general guideline on how the language should *feel* like, and its going pretty well. If you want to help develop the language, please let me know!
Fun fact: "Bah" is an informal greeting!
P.S. Yes, the glyphs are still the same as the fonts available online, in fact, I strictly only allow English letters due to this so that y'all can apply any glyph you want.

since cybertron Presumably doesn't have France, what do they call that specific type of Smooch?
PRESUMABLY HGALJAHAAHLGJGHA
anon ty this is the funniest ask i have gotten in a long while
i immediately scoured my maps for F location names but there's not a lot of options. Ferromax kiss? Vauvaire kiss? Vaporex kiss? perhaps instead of a tongue tango they have a glossa glide? there's always the tried and true term makeout which i think i've been defaulting to. uhhh i dunno uh. facial vehicular manslaughter??? i don't know, i give you free reign to go with whatever is funniest
kissing is of course not the only form of affection especially for people with faceplates instead of lips

Just want to give you some TFP sillies regarding Sky-Byte (it’s kinda everywhere, i’m sorry about that).
So in TFP, the Predacons are the oldest race of Cybertronians that were wiped out by the Great Cataclysm and would’ve stayed that way had Shockwave not taken their preserved CNA and created Predaking, Darksteel, and Skylynx.
But Sky-Byte is different. Unlike him being a clone of some predecessor, he is an actual living Predacon whose mere existence basically challenges any form of logic. Sky-Byte also directly challenges Predacon stereotypes such as having a draconic form.
But a minor silly thing I want to talk about is his interactions with the Predacons. Sky-Byte is actually “younger” than the other 3 (even though they are technically clones). Sky-Byte is closer in age to the Autobots/Decepticons which implies that the Predacon race has been surviving for much longer than they thought up until the war (he is a real life coelocanth).
In one of their interactions, Darksteel actually refers to Sky-Byte as a “nothing more than a child” (translated from Predacon Cybertronix) as a way to taunt him into fighting until Predaking subsequently broke it up. This was like their first interaction too 😭.
Basically they have a bond almost like the one Sky-Byte had in RID: 2001 with the other Predacons: Slapper, Dark Scream, and Gas Skunk (except Sky-Byte’s not the leader here, Predaking is). In fact, Sky-Byte would not have joined the Decepticons in the first place had Predaking not been there.
Another minor silly thing is that in this AU, Sky-Byte doesn’t know how to speak English or modern Cybertronian in general. Predacon language (known as Predacon Cybertronix) is basically an outdated version of Cybertronian that isn’t exactly translatable due to the disparity between the two languages. Predaking, Darksteel, and Skylynx can speak it thanks to their CNA from their predecessors, and so they often translate for him (Megatron finds this particularly annoying).
Kinda off topic but now I’m just imagining Predaking, Skylynx, and Darksteel taking care of a baby Sky-Byte đŸ„čđŸ„č.
I will post a deeper dive into it soon. I just need to get better and get my life into order, but have this for now :).
But yay they family 🧡🧡🧡!!!
oh god thank you so much for the info!! I really like the idea that he speaks Predacon!! though I can imagine how difficult it must be for him to communicate with others without Predaking, Skylynx, or Darksteel around :(
And I’m absolutely in love with the idea of baby Sky-Byte being taken care of, it’s so funny and adorable ahah 😭😭😭💖

While it's fun to think of humans being space cats who get rid of scraplets on Cybertronian ships, I also think about what are the chances that humans end up domesticating scraplets down the line? Sure, maybe you can only tame them within a human lifetime since domestication takes thousands of years, but a few millenia isn't that long to the average Cybertronian, so what if some thousands of years later, humans eventually do end up dometicating scraplets and rendering wild ones extinct? Now the Cybertronians' space cats have an entire army of their own. Imagine if your pet cat had an army of mice that does its bidding.
1000%! I have a headcanon of you salvaging one that’s not completely scrapped, fixing it up, and having Wheeljack reprogram it to be your personal assistant. Scrappy gets a custom paint job, two-way external speakers so you can communicate with the mechs, a GPS tracker so they can find you in an emergency, a translator for Cybertronix, and storage space with a subspace pocket so they can carry some of your stuff around for you. They’re a walking, talking music player, video projector, map, note taker and anything else you need. They’re kind of an assistive device really, since there’s so much that humans can’t do without external electronics.
Of course that’s your best lil buddy forever too!
So seeing that done on a small scale would very likely make humans think, if you can do it with one, could you do it on a larger scale? There’s certainly precedence for it. We turned wolves into dogs, after all! Since Scrappy has some of his original coding left, just carefully adjusted, he could probably help you "tame" wild scraplets, too, to expand your little swarm.

These aren't transformers at all! These are Cybertronix M.A.R.S. toys! Had a few as a kid. First one is Rain Cruiser, second is Polar Captain. :)
Thanks for launching me back a decade and a half, yo, I had to look them all up to remember their names. I had XSS and Freeze Frost as a kid. They got SO full of sand during a trip to Moab.

Dear Vector Sigma, what is the most common cybertronian name?
Dear Vernacular Voice,
The human larynx cannot generate the sounds of Cybertronix or even the much simpler Old High Cybex. I have tried to represent sounds that you lack in writing with digits, but this has not been useful for teaching our language to humans.
Having said that, the most common name sounds something like cm9ib3RzIGluIGRpc2d1aXNl. It means approximately "super metal robot in disguise". It's a very old name, first attested in the mythical Living Pulley era of our history, originally referring to the very first Transformers and has since become a very generic name. These days, it's roughly equivalent to "pal" in "Hey, pal!"

I gave Sky-Byte a pet, and because he is Sky-Byte, his pet is a giant, mech-eating crocodile that only listens to him (partly because it only understands commands in Predacon Cybertronix a.k.a a language Sky-Byte only speaks).
R.I.P the Decepticons. They are losing limbs tonight.
On a more serious note though, the crocodile is basically the Predacon equivalent of a dog so yeah. They’re known for being strong, loyal, and extremely aggressive towards outside threats. Historically, priests would use them to guard shrines and other religious sites to prevent them from being desecrated :).
Little Predacon lore for you :D!
