I'm seeing some people criticizing finn for promoting his independent movie during the strikes, thoughts?
I haven't seen anyone criticizing him on here so it must be other places? Not sure if these folks are misinformed about the rules of the strike(s) and so they're just starting shit to start shit or if they know something I don't, but I'm gonna guess the former.
From what I understand, Finn was pretty bummed earlier this year bc he couldn't find a distributor for his film. And so by the time the strike(s) came around, it just so happened that the film still had no ties to any major studios. It's an independent film, as are quite a few of the films presenting at TIFF, with no ties currently to any of the major studios responsible for the strike.
Hell of a Summer, as well as the other independent films at TIFF, could eventually be tied to a studio some time down the line in order for the films to be distributed to the public, most likely via streaming at least, but with the strike that ain't happening any time soon (it's worth noting that even without the strike, independent films can take quite awhile to be released, upwards over a year internationally).
HOAS also has a waiver from SAG because Finn and his team presumably agreed to the terms of SAG's deal in order to be allowed to promote it. This is only something I knew for sure about because D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, from Reservation Dogs, also had a role in the film, and he posted about it being covered by a waiver.

From what I've seen, both Finn and even D'Pharaoh have vocalized support for the strikes, so I don't think they could in good conscious promote this film unless it went along with the rules of the strikes.
As for SAG, they picketed outside of Apple and Amazon in Canada shortly before TIFF started. So their concerns seem to be with the big guys and not the little guys just trying to make films more for the sake of the craft and not for the sake of making money in ways that undermine their talent's livelihood.
I know some people in the industry feel differently about waivers, where some don't support them at all, insisting that a complete stoppage is the only way for the strikes to end sooner, while others think independent films following the demands of WGA/SAG being allowed to go forward with promotion could help pressure the big studios to cave sooner.
Personally, I do think it's sort of a given that the studios don't like the idea of independent films being able to thrive, while they have to sit in limbo. I also don't think independent films, that already have a hard enough time as it is to be recognized, should necessarily have to suffer the consequences of an industry that monopolizes films and makes it so independent studios essentially have to join amongst them or be doomed to fail.
That is a huge part of the problem in and of itself, because we know a majority of the major studios will come out of this unscathed, but for independent studios, this could mean their end.
And we definitely don't want a future where independent films don't have a seat at the table, hence why some of them are being given waivers, in the case they are agreeing to the demands of the guilds, so we can ensure that doesn't happen.
So just to be clear, promoting this film isn't scabbing.

Alex Garland's ‘Warfare' Could Be A24's Most Expensive Movie — World of Reel
Much has been made about Alex Garland’s “Civil War” being the most expensive movie in A24 history, its production was said to have cost around $50 million. However, Jeff Sneider is hearing that Garland’s next film, “Warfare”, which he’s co-directing with Ray Mendoza, might be even more expensive. My best guess is its budget might hit the $60-70 million range.
Production on “Warfare” is supposed to begin in May. We don’t know much about the plot except that it is set in 2007 during the Iraq war. The cast includes Charles Melton, Joseph Quinn, D’Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, Will Poulter, Kit Connor, Cosmo Jarvis, Michael Gandolfini, Taylor John Smith, Finn Bennett, Henrique Zaga and Adain Bradley.
Sneider adds that most if not all of these actors are currently undergoing military training at a Navy SEAL-like boot camp in England. They are striving for authenticity with this one and that’s always a good sign.
Garland’s co-director, Mendoza, is a war expert having collaborated with the History Channel as a producer on the documentary series “The Warfighters.” His IMDb doesn’t show any directing credits to his name, so this film with Garland will be his feature filmmaking debut.

you know who i would kill to see play ace. d’pharaoh woon a tai. i know it’s a long shot and we’d be more likely to see him as wyper, but he looks so much like ace to me it’s crazy. also if they cast a white passing person as ace my heart is going to shatter. im really hoping we get an indigenous identifying actor for ace, whether they’re indigenous from south america north or central, all i care about is some rep for us ndns
