Thess vs the Longer Version
So. Okay. Now that I am at a real keyboard. Day 1 of MCM Comic Con.
First group of people I ended up in the queue with? Dragon Age cosplayers. Specifically a really well done Lavellan, a damn near Amazonian Isabela (seriously she was over six feet tall and her boots did not have that much heel)  and the best Cole I have ever seen. She even had contacts to make her eyes look paler and more ethereal. She was note-perfect Cole. And she was fucking sweltering, poor thing. Bonus - the hat gave her some shade.
There were a lot of Overwatch cosplayers. Final count - two Reapers, two Tracers, two Mercys, one extremely tall Lucio, one Ana, three McCrees, two Hanzos, one Genji (young green-haired edition), one phenomenally done Mei, five D.Vas, two Torbjorns with some pretty hardcore costumes (and seeing tall Torbjorns is just fucking weird), one Widowmaker and something like seven Soldier:76s. I think my favourite was the female McCree and the female Hanzo who were literally living a genderswap McHanzo fluff fic.
Had a lovely chat with a Saints Row PC cosplayer named Daniel and a guy whose name I didn’t get who was in Popeye cosplay, topics running the gamut from the homogeneity of popular media to the rise of neo-Dadaism in the form of memes to how difficult it is to come out of the closet in whatever sense. This is when I found out that we would have to have our bags searched every time we re-entered the venue on leaving, even for a minute under the watchful eye of security guards.
First thing I saw on entering the venue: three police officers in full riot gear with assault rifles. First thought: “What show are they from?” Sudden realisation: “...Oh shit, they’re not cosplayers”. Ironically, suddenly felt less safe.
They’ve been sensible at MCM this year - opened both sides of the convention hall for the event rather than cramming it onto one side while cramming, like, the bridal expo onto the other. I think the fact that they’ve got two Firefly actors, half the new Power Rangers, Donna Tate and Donnie fucking Yuen as speakers this year may have clued them in to the idea that there are going to be MOBS.
At first I did not realise that Kit Buss was there. I was trawling Artist Alley as I usually do at these things and blinked at some art I recognised. “Wait, doesn’t that turn up on the Critical Role break-time shows of fanart? ...Yes, and it’s also showed up as character art for the Critical Role crew since before they started airing it because this is Kit Buss’ stall holy shit!” She was at lunch so I had a print of the original lineup (Percy, Keyleth, Vex, Vax, Tiberius, Grog, Pike, Scanlan and Trinket) set aside so that I could come back and have it signed when she was back. ...Then when I did come back, she was talking to fans showing her a lot of cosplay pictures on their phones. I politely waited. For ten minutes. When the girls waiting realised I was there, and figured out how long I had been there, they called me ‘way too polite’. I guess “do unto others as you would have them to unto you” is a dangerous policy to maintain at conventions. She was lovely. Wished the Cupcake Coterie many natural 20s. Was wearing the most adorable blouse - fabric printed with cats playing musical instruments.
The Discord Comics people were also there, and they were selling Lucie Decline the Asexual Succubus merchandise! I now have an ‘Asexual Succubus’ pendant. I told the guy that this was the first time I’d seen merchandise that was ... well, me. His face just lit up.
I also got the most gorgeous sketch-of-sorts of Brixton from a guy named Lewis Campbell. Check him out at Lostmonkey - seriously, it’s glorious stuff.
Also got my Mercy shirt. ‘Primum Non Nocere’. Words to live by.
My feet hurt. My head hurts. It was very hot and I am very tired and MCM feels weird with armed police presence. Don’t regret it, though. Overall, I had a good time. May skip Saturday and attend Sunday for Kieron Gillen’s panel (I honestly do not know if he will be signing; I looked everywhere for a stall with him at it but it honestly took me a half-hour to find out what panel he’d be at so I think he’s going low-key on this one), but haven’t decided yet. It will depend on how my feet feel. And whether I hear anything about @elenilote being there.
Oh, and @wenchlatte? It just wasn’t the same without you.

Regarding Officer D.Va ‘controversy’
I am very sure she is a Korean. Her skin does not represent solely ‘american’ police. And just by wearing police officer’s costume she does not change her personality in any way.
If there is Judy Hopps there can be Officer D.Va too. Maybe we should stop looking for ‘controversy’ in somewhere it does not exist in the first place.

The only reason why im salty over the new D.vA skin is only because i cant play HotS and i dont have a good pc to game on
But y'all people being salty over the new D.vA skin because you claim that it "turns her into a racist pig!"
WHICH IT DOEST!
Its just a fucking costume you cunt nuggets
So take a chill pill and gg
What makes it cringy af is the fact that the majority of the D.va "mains" are bitching about the new skin
If you're a fucking D.Va main and a D.Va fan you should know her cannon lore!
D.va is a member of the Korean military
Korean Police are just another brach of the Republic of the Korea armed forces
And if you think im bs then go and do your fucking homework about the korea armed forces and the D.va lore
Damn i never know people could be such cry baby's on Tumblr
BUT HEY YALL OVERWATCH PLAYERS!!! ^^ xD
IM GLAD THAT SOME OF US LOVES THE NEW D.VA SKIN!

The people who seem genuinely upset over D.va's police skin need to chill. I mean, the skin itself is pretty harmless and the South Korean police force aren't exactly known for being shits. I don't really think they're known for much of anything really. It just seems like a cute cop costume for a character unrelated to anything involving corruption, race issues or American police and this is one of those situations where hating on it seems whinny at best. It could be worse, they could add a ferguson event.

I get the discontent with D.Va police costume, but wouldn't it be more akin for her to be integrated in anti-police brutality movements from South Korea, as the situation there is fucked up as well? Her wearing a BLM t-shirt would make as much sense as me doing it in the Canary Islands, where it doesn't exist as a movement or anything at all

Meet the women and girls who rocked Comic Con – BBC News
Image copyright AFP
Image caption Fans dressed as their favourite characters at London Comic Con this weekend
Scratch below the surface at Comic Con and you might be surprised to find thousands of young women who go because they find it empowering.
It might have a reputation for attracting nerds and geeks, but as one female fan put it: "You feel very accepted, and you get to be whoever you want for a day - it's really special."
Here are some of the female voices from this year's fan convention in London.
Samantha Prosper - as Emily from the film The Corpse Bride
"I love the movie and the character. She's passionate and kind so I was inspired to be like her.
"I love the atmosphere here - it's really good for young women because it's non-judgmental.
"Any person of any shape or colour can come and feel absolutely welcome - it's so kind and friendly that nobody feels out of place. You can come as anyone you want and be absolutely fine."
Sophie Skye and Eliza - as Maleficent from the film
Sophie: "I'm playing Maleficent, the Angelina Jolie version. I love cosplay because it gives you the chance to play someone else for a day. It's escapism, pure fantasy.
"You can be covered or wear the smallest of clothes, it's a very respectful environment where you can express yourself. There's a lot of amazing female characters in the comic, anime and film world, so there's a lot of inspiration."
Eliza: "I love young Maleficent because her wings are ginormous and she can fly very fast and she's cool. My dad made my wings and I bought my necklace here.
"I love the different types of costumes here, they're all related to comics."
Phoebe and Martha - as Fionna from TV animation Adventure Time and Harley Quinn from the film Suicide Squad
Phoebe: "I love reading comics and watching animations and films. I came as Fionna because she's really strong and powerful - she once rescued a prince.
"I came here last year as well, and one of the best bits was meeting comic book artists like Jess Bradley."
Martha: "I saw the movie Suicide Squad and loved Harley Quinn because she's cool and sassy so I decided to dress like her. I really like seeing so many people dressed up here."
Grace Ford - as Blue Diamond from TV animation Steven Universe
"I've been coming for about six years. I love dressing up - you can escape reality and it's just a bit of fun really. I fell in love with Blue Diamond's look and design and thought, 'Why not go for it?'
"I won't lie, I was a bit worried about coming here after the Manchester attack but it's good the police are here. It gives reassurance."
Comic book artist and illustrator Jess Bradley
"Me and my husband love doing comic conventions because it gets your work out to a wider audience and the atmosphere's fantastic.
"I've been doing it for about 10 years and you get so much positive feedback. It's just so much fun.
"I draw comic strips and write and illustrate children's books and colouring books. I tend to focus a lot on self-publishing because you have complete control over what you do."
Vivian Park - as a character from horror thriller film The Purge
"My costume is inspired by The Purge - there's something dystopian about it and I'm really inspired by it. I bought my mask from the masquerade in Venice.
"I love Comic Con because everybody comes together and we all have something in common, no matter where we're from.
"It's a place where you feel very accepted and you get to be whoever you want for a day - it's really special."
Katie Berry and Kelly Peach as Mercy and D.Va from online game Overwatch
Katie: "I'm here because I'm a really big comics fan and you don't really get this atmosphere anywhere else.
"I made my costume - it took about a month for the breastplate and then about a month for the rest - it's made of Perspex."
Kelly: "I've been coming for five or six years and it's always the same people and there's such a community feeling - everyone's into the same things, everyone wants to celebrate all these interests that they wouldn't get to explore in their day-to-day lives. Dressing up is part of the fun."
Emily Hopkins - as Jillian Holtzmann from the Ghostbusters remake
"I'm here because I love everything about it. My confidence is boosted being around people who are carefree and appreciate the same things.
"It's helped me feel less worried about the stuff that I like - it's not nerdy, it's great! Everyone's so different, I just love it. I can escape and get creative.
"I came as a Ghostbuster because it's about time there were more female-centric films and I think the hate the movie got was completely unnecessary, and the majority came from people who couldn't be be bothered to see it and give it a chance."
Comic book illustrator Karen Rubins
"I'm here to sell my comics and prints and meet people who like my work.
"I work for a comic called The Phoenix with a strip called The Shivers by Dan Hartwell, and our characters include girl heroes solving mysteries and standing up to supernatural threats.
"In the comic village here at Comic Con there's at least 50% female artists and it's a great space to work, it's really inclusive and there's loads of different comics you can discover."

Week Collection of Dreams (plus 3 days)
The following is a short summary of some dreams I had. Under a readmore for convenience. Some unsavory topics for some come up, so be warned.
Eris’s Chaos
What began as me walking up the steps to the second floor of a train station quickly turned into a impromptu ride on a rollercoaster instead of the train. My friend and I where thoroughly confused. Through some thought and observation, we came to realize that all thought became reality, but unlike the usual definition of magic in my dreams, it’s not conscious thought willing something into existence, but all thought, including intrusive thoughts and daydreams drastically changing reality. Eventually we realized the source of the chaos was the apple tree that grew the Golden Apples of Discord. Apparently, whenever one of the apple fell it caused great chaos to the world, and normally the chaos would normalize before the next apple fell. In addition, if anyone were to pluck an apple, it would curse the closest person to the tree. The current issue was caused by someone attempting to chop down the tree, evident by the base being cut nearly all the way through, with the only thing connecting the tree to the trunk is a folded out piece of bark, though the tree is still resting on the trunk (think nearly headless Nick from Harry Potter). At the tree, there was a young girl, young teens or so, and the chaos had began to wane by the time we got. Curious, I called out to her, and while she looked scared and curious at first, her face turn malicious and did something that made me collapse grasping my arm, either grazing me with a gun shot, or scratching me with something thrown. My friend, apparently with a gun, shot back hitting her arm, realizing she is Eris herself. She turned and ran, and as she ran past the tree the person who guided us there (technically his first appearance in the dream but retroactively has always existed due to dream logic) threw a knife that struck an apple from the tree, effectively cursing Eris with her own tree curse. The dream ends with my friend coming to me to check if I was okay, and pans out on the scene.
Something Something Zombie Swamp
In retrospect this dream was kinda generic. I’ll just briefly mention the interesting parts. Mutated monsters roaming a swamp, like a huge snaking alligator with 8 or more legs and green pulsing spines along its back; a cruise ship safe haven floating in the swamp with a small city inside, with all the terribleness of city life. Homelessness, starvation, crime, etc; D.Va mechs as the police force. Like, legit D.Va Mekkas. I ended the dream flying one, it was amazing.
Tickleface
Remember the Halloween clown epidemic? Memories of that amplified by the recent It commercials lead to me being followed down the boardwalk by an ugly malformed clown with a large, yellow, Sloth from the Goonies head. After being stalked up and down the beach, I thought I saw him down an alley path. Upon going all the way through, I found out it was a creepy but harmless vendor stall event that I honestly just forgot immediately after seeing it. Upon reaching the other side of the alley path, I turned around slowly in an attempt to predict horror tropes. Sure enough I saw Tickleface the clown at the end of the path where I had come from. Quickly, I grabbed a rock and charged my stalker. Taken a back, he scratched my face deeply with his spike tipped gloves, but I caused him serious damage by hitting his head with the rock. One dream transition later, I was in trial, seeing that most of the malformed parts where simply makeup and costume. It was argued that my attack was justified as Tickleface was presenting himself as an imminent threat by stalking me with a visible weapon.I woke before the trial ended, but it was way in my favor.

Overwatch discourse below.
D.va's police officer skin is a very clear example of US culture's police worship. Blizzard is a US company based in California, and I don't need to tell you how the US is doin right now re: white supremacy - you already know. In this particular political moment, the police officer skin is at best a gross sexy costume to put this teenager in, and at worst a callous slap in the face of American POC facing the very real threat of police violence. D.va is a fictional character of Blizzard's creation. Someone sat down at a desk and drew her. She does not have personal rights and cannot experience oppression - but her character and narrative can absolutely be a tool for discussing those real world issues. Is south-east Asian racism an issue to talk about - absolutely. No one is saying that it's not. But it's buck fucking Wild to say that calling out Blizzard on this particular issue is oppression of Korean individuals.
