struggling with how to word this, but putting it out there anyway:
i can fully understand the posts on here from a lot of americans being tired of "vote blue no matter who" posts when the #1 thing that people are constantly (and sometimes only?) addressing is how the republican party is going treat trans/queer people if elected.
it's part of an unfortunate pattern of prioritizing the effects on a demographic that includes white + upper class people, when people of color and those in the global south are actively and currently being killed or relegated to circumstances in which their survival is very unlikely
it is genuinely exhausting to witness this, and i was also on the fence about even participating in voting because i a) felt like it didn't matter and b) every time i voiced being frustrated with the current state of the country, white queer people would immediately step in with "but what about trans people!" -> (i am mixed race trans man)
and i say this with unending patience toward people who do this, because i know that it's not something they actively think about. but everyone already knows how the republican party is going to treat queer people. you are probably talking to another queer person when you bring up project 2025. the issue is that, for those of us who aren't white, or for those of us who are but who are conscious of ongoing struggles for people of color worldwide, the safety of people around the world feels more urgent than our own. that is the calculation that's being made.
you're not going to win votes for the democratic party by dismissing or minimizing these realities and by continually centering (white) queer people.
very few people on here and twitter are actually talking about issues beyond queer rights that concern people of color, or how the two administrations differ on these issues instead of constantly circling back to single-issue politics. this isn't an exhaustive list. but these are the issues that have actually altered my perspective and motivated me to the point of committing to casting a vote
the biden administration has been engaged in a years-long fight to allow new applicants to DACA (Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals, the program that allows undocumented individuals who arrived as children to remain in the country) after the Trump administration attempted to terminate it. the program is in limbo currently because of the actions of Trump-backed judges, with those who applied before the ruling being allowed to stay, but no new applications are being processed. Trump has repeatedly toyed with the idea of just deporting the 1.8 million people, but he continues to change his mind depending on whatever the fuck goes on in his head. he cannot be relied on to be sympathetic toward people of hispanic descent or to guarantee that DREAMers will be allowed stay in the country. biden + a democratic controlled congress will allow legal challenges to the DACA moratorium to gain ground.
the biden administration is open to returning and protecting portions of culturally important indigenous land in a way that the trump administration absolutely does not give a fuck. as of may 2024, they have established seven national monuments with plans to expand the San Gabriel Monument where the Gabrielino, Kizh / Tongva, the Chumash, Kitanemuk, Serrano, and Tataviam reside. the Berryessa Snow Mountain is also on the list, as a sacred region to the Patwin.
i'm recognizing that the US's plans for clean energy have often come into conflict with tribal sovereignty, and the biden administration could absolutely do better in navigating this. but the unfortunate dichotomy is that there would be zero commitment or investment in clean energy under a trump-led government, which poses an astounding existential threat and destabilizing force to the global south beyond any human-to-human conflict. climate change has caused and will continue to cause resource shortages, greater natural disasters, and near-lethal living conditions for those in the tropics - and the actions of the highest energy consumers (US) are to blame. biden has funneled billions of dollars into climate change mitigation and clean energy generation - trump does not believe that any of it matters.
i may circle back to this and add more as it comes up, but i'm hoping that those who are skeptical / discouraged / tired of the white queer-centric discourse on tumblr and twitter can at least process some of this. please feel free to add more articles + points but i'm asking for the sake of this post to please focus on issues that affect people of color.

Biden's plan for legalizing families of US citizens
President Joe Biden, who has recently adopted stricter immigration policies, is set to announce a significant new effort to legalize undocumented immigrants. This new policy could be the biggest move in over a decade aimed at helping undocumented immigrants gain legal status. Under this new program, undocumented spouses and stepchildren of U.S. citizens can apply for permanent residence and get a…

Things Biden and the Democrats did, this week #16
April 26-May 3 2024
President Biden announced $3 billion to help replace lead pipes in the drinking water system. Millions of Americans get their drinking water through lead pipes, which are toxic, no level of lead exposure is safe. This problem disproportionately affects people of color and low income communities. This first investment of a planned $15 billion will replace 1.7 million lead pipe lines. The Biden Administration plans to replace all lead pipes in the country by the end of the decade.
President Biden canceled the student debt of 317,000 former students of a fraudulent for-profit college system. The Art Institutes was a for-profit system of dozens of schools offering degrees in video-game design and other arts. After years of legal troubles around misleading students and falsifying data the last AI schools closed abruptly without warning in September last year. This adds to the $29 billion in debt for 1.7 borrowers who wee mislead and defrauded by their schools which the Biden Administration has done, and a total debt relief for 4.6 million borrowers so far under Biden.
President Biden expanded two California national monuments protecting thousands of acres of land. The two national monuments are the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument and the Berryessa Snow Mountain National Monument, which are being expanded by 120,000 acres. The new protections cover lands of cultural and religious importance to a number of California based native communities. This expansion was first proposed by then Senator Kamala Harris in 2018 as part of a wide ranging plan to expand and protect public land in California. This expansion is part of the Administration's goals to protect, conserve, and restore at least 30 percent of U.S. lands and waters by 2030.
The Department of Transportation announced new rules that will require car manufacturers to install automatic braking systems in new cars. Starting in 2029 all new cars will be required to have systems to detect pedestrians and automatically apply the breaks in an emergency. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration projects this new rule will save 360 lives every year and prevent at least 24,000 injuries annually.
The IRS announced plans to ramp up audits on the wealthiest Americans. The IRS plans on increasing its audit rate on taxpayers who make over $10 million a year. After decades of Republicans in Congress cutting IRS funding to protect wealthy tax cheats the Biden Administration passed $80 billion for tougher enforcement on the wealthy. The IRS has been able to collect just in one year $500 Million in undisputed but unpaid back taxes from wealthy households, and shows a rise of $31 billion from audits in the 2023 tax year. The IRS also announced its free direct file pilot program was a smashing success. The program allowed tax payers across 12 states to file directly for free with the IRS over the internet. The IRS announced that 140,000 tax payers were able to use it over their target of 100,000, they estimated it saved $5.6 million in tax prep fees, over 90% of users were happy with the webpage and reported it quicker and easier than companies like H&R Block. the IRS plans to bring direct file nationwide next year.
The Department of Interior announced plans for new off shore wind power. The two new sites, off the coast of Oregon and in the Gulf of Maine, would together generate 18 gigawatts of totally clean energy, enough to power 6 million homes.
The Biden Administration announced new rules to finally allow DACA recipients to be covered by Obamacare. Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) is an Obama era policy that allows people brought to the United States as children without legal status to remain and to legally work. However for years DACA recipients have not been able to get health coverage through the Obamacare Health Care Marketplace. This rule change will bring health coverage to at least 100,000 uninsured people.
The Department of Health and Human Services finalized rules that require LGBTQ+ and Intersex minors in the foster care system be placed in supportive and affirming homes.
The Senate confirmed Georgia Alexakis to a life time federal judgeship in Illinois. This brings the total number of federal judges appointed by President Biden to 194. For the first time in history the majority of a President's nominees to the federal bench have not been white men.

To those of you that say "voting for Biden is voting for genocide". I understand where you're coming from. But you have to understand that a lack of voting is still incredibly bad. Inaction is still action.
This is essentially the trolley problem. I'm pulling the lever to vote blue. I hate Biden for his endorsement of genocide. But letting the Republican party win is allowing for even more abuse alongside the genocide of Palestinians.
Biden is shit but he relieved student loans. He won't pack the Supreme Court with Republicans. He is much more in support of climate control and clean energy. Is attempting to work with indigenous communitites for conservation of land. He has facilitated an easier process for those looking to immigrate into the US. Protected DACA. Protected lunch programs.
There are more reasons to vote for Biden than just to prevent project 2025 (and of course, project 2025 is awful).
Please please please! Vote Blue! And don't stop there. Be active in your local elections. Don't just vote every 4 years. Vote for your local representatives and senators. I know it seems honestly hopeless, but there are in fact representatives that support the issues listed, and more (including Palestine!). Look up your local representatives running in these upcoming months. Do research to help protect our rights.

Important Announcement About J. Antonio Rodriguez’s Absence
A Playbill article was published today, about why J took an extended leave from Hadestown. As he has said before, he’s a Dreamer, which means he was brought to America as a child, without documentation. The program that allows him to work and live here, DACA, requires he renew some paperwork every two years.
It usually takes a couple days to renew, but due to delays (caused both by Trump’s policy changes and an influx of new immigrants to process), he has been waiting for multiple months. He is not the only one.
Until it is renewed, he cannot work or drive. There is no way to know how long renewal will take.
A petition has been made calling for DACA to prioritize renewals that have been pending for over 100 days. Here is the link.

Their immigration reporting is so terrible, the reverse of it is true.
elizabeth nickson
Sep 10, 2024
An excerpt from Against the Corporate Media, coming Sept. 10 from Bombardier Books. "The Media vs. the Nation's Borders," by Mark Krikorian.
One area in which the media narrative of the noble immigrant who is never wrong but can only be wronged is most evident is the coverage of the so-called Dreamers. Even using that advocacy label skews the perception and coverage of the issue of illegal aliens who came here at a young age.
The original DREAM (Development, Relief, and Education for Alien Minors) Act was introduced in 2001. There have been many iterations of the proposal over the intervening two decades, but they all would have given a green card (that is, permanent residence with a path to citizenship) to illegal aliens who came here as minors, had lived here for a certain number of years, had completed school or were in some educational program, and who had not been convicted of certain crimes. The rationale was that since they were minors when they came to the U.S. illegally, they should not be held liable for the actions of their parents. The bill came closest to passing in the lame duck session of Congress at the end of 2010, when it passed the House but failed in the Senate.
Barack Obama’s 2012 campaign, fearing that anemic Hispanic registration numbers would threaten his re-election, decided to implement something like the DREAM Act administratively to generate enthusiasm among Hispanic voters (even though the president had earlier said he lacked the authority to do that). The result was Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA), which gave two-year renewable work permits (but not green cards, which only Congress can do) to more than 800,000 illegal-alien “Dreamers” (though some have dropped out in the interim).

At the dawn of the program allowing the children of illegal immigrants to remain in the United States, thousands who had arrest records were allowed to remain.
A report from 2019 that covers the Deferred Action on Childhood Arrivals program created by former President Barack Obama, shows that 79,398 people were exempted from deportation, even with arrest records.
Although more than half of those arrests were related to driving (excluding DWI cases) or immigration, the top of the list includes those who were arrested for theft, drug crimes, assault, battery and burglary.
Sex offenses, including rape, arson, murder, child pornography and kidnapping also appear on the list of crimes for which illegal immigrants admitted to DACA were arrested....

“We are living right now in a rat’s nest. They’re killing our people in New York, in California, and every state in the union because we don’t have borders anymore. Every state is now a border,” Trump said during the debate, according to the Washington Examiner.
“Because of his ridiculous, insane, and very stupid policies, people are coming in and they’re killing our citizens at a level that we’ve never seen. We call it migrant crime. I call it Biden migrant crime,” the former president further jabbed.

Lauren Gambino at The Guardian:
Joe Biden on Tuesday announced an expansive new plan to provide a pathway to citizenship for undocumented spouses of US citizens, calling it a “commonsense fix” that would provide relief to more than half a million “mixed-status” families in the country. The move comes as the Democratic president tries to strike a balance before the 5 November election: confronting rising public concern over the unprecedented levels of migration at the southern border, while appeasing progressive Democrats and Hispanic leaders furious over Biden’s aggressive asylum crackdown, which they likened to Trump-era policies. The children of undocumented immigrants married to US citizens could also qualify under the new process. Biden said the plan reflected his commitment to “keeping families together”, an effort to draw a clear distinction with Donald Trump, whose “zero tolerance” border policies separated thousands of children from their parents.
“This action is a better way,” the president said on Tuesday, surrounded by Democratic lawmakers and immigration rights advocates. “It doesn’t tear families apart.” Biden unveiled his plans at a celebratory White House event marking the 12th anniversary of the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, or Daca, which shields from deportation nearly 530,000 undocumented immigrants brought to the US as children. The Department of Homeland Security estimates that approximately 500,000 undocumented spouses and 50,000 children under the age of 21 – the stepchildren of US citizens – could potentially benefit. According to the administration, those eligible for this process have resided in the US for an average of 23 years.
“Living in United States all this time with the fear and uncertainty,” Biden said. “We can fix that.” The East Room of the White House erupted in applause. “¡Sí se puede!” an attendee shouted, after the president finished speaking. Under the plan, undocumented immigrants who have resided in the US for 10 or more years, as of 17 June, and are legally married to a US citizen will be newly eligible to pursue legal status while living and working in the US. Couples do not need to have been married for any specific amount of time, but only those who meet the requirements as of Monday are eligible. Marrying a US citizen typically opens a pathway to citizenship. But people who entered the country illegally must first leave the US before they can apply for permanent residency – a process that can take years. As a result, many choose to stay and risk deportation rather than leave their families. The policy essentially allows the government to “admit” these immigrants and begin the status-adjustment process in the US.
President Joe Biden (D) announces that he is pledging to support a pathway to citizenship for undocumented spouses and children of US citizens.
To be eligible, undocumented immigrants who have resided in the US for 10 or more years and be married to a US citizen.

Things Biden and the Democrats did, this week #23
June 14-21 2024.
On the 12th anniversary of President Obama's DACA program President Biden announced a new pathway to legal status and eventual citizenship for Dreamers. DACA was an executive action by President Obama which deferred any deportation of persons brought to the US as children without legal status. While DACA allowed Dreamers to work legally in the US for the first time, it didn't give them permanent legal status. Now the Biden administration is streamlining the process for employers to apply for work Visas for Dreamers. With Visas Dreamers will for the first time have legal status, the ability to leave and reenter the US legally, and a pathway to a Green Card and eventual citizenship.
President Biden also announced protections for the undocumented spouses and children of US citizens. The new rule allows the spouse, or step-child of a US citizen to apply for lawful permanent residency without having to leaving the country. It's estimated this will help 500,000 undocumented people married to Americans, and 50,000 children under the age of 21 whose parent is married to an American citizen. Current law forces spouses to leave the United States if they're here illegally and wait and unclear period of probation before being allowed to return, but being allowed back is not assured.
The IRS announced that it'll close a tax loophole used by the ultra rich and corporations and believes it'll raise $50 billion in revenue. Known as a "pass-through" has allowed the rich to move money around to avoid taxes in a move the Treasury is calling a shell-game. Pass-throughs have grown by 70% between 2010 and 2019 and the IRS believes it helped the rich avoid paying $160 billion dollars in taxes during that time. The IRS estimates its crack down on these will raise $50 billion in tax revenue over the next 10 years.
The EPA and Department of Energy announced $850 million to monitor, measure, quantify and reduce methane emissions from the oil and gas sector. Methane is the second most common greenhouse gas, responsible for 1/3rd of the global warming. The funding will focus on helping small operators significantly reduce emissions, as well as help more quickly detect and cap methane leaks from low-producing wells. All this comes after the EPA finalized rules to reduce methane emissions by 80% from oil and gas.
The Biden Administration took steps to protect the nations Old Growth Forests. The move will greatly restrict any logging against the 41 million acres of protected land owned by the federal government. The Administration also touted the 20% of America's forests that are in urban settings as parks and the $1.4 billion invested in their protection through the President’s Investing in America agenda.
The Biden Administration released new rules tying government support for clean energy to good paying jobs. If companies want to qualify for massive tax credits they'll have to offer higher wages and better conditions. This move will push union level wages across the green energy sector.
The Department of Education announced large reductions in student loan payments, and even a pause for some, starting in July. For millions of Americans enrolled in the Biden Administration's SAVE plan, starting in July, monthly payments on loans borrowed for undergraduate will be reduced from 10% to 5% of discretionary income. As the department hasn't been able to fully calculate the change for all borrowers at this point it will pause payment for those it hasn't finalized the formula for and they won't have to make a payment till DoE figures it out. The SAVE plan allows many borrowers to make payments as low as $0 a month toward having their loans forgiven. So far the Biden Administration has forgiven $5.5 billion wiping out the debt of 414,000 people enrolled in SAVE.
The Biden Administration celebrated the 1 Millionth pension protected under the American Rescue Plan. Senator Bob Casey joined Biden Administration officials and Union official to announce that thanks to the Butch Lewis Act passed in 2021 the government would be stepping in to secure the pensions of 103,000 Bakery and Confectionery Union workers which were facing a devastating 45% cut. This brings to 1 million the number of workers and retirees whose pensions have been secured by the Biden Administration, which has supported 83 different pension funds protecting them from an average of 37% cut.
The Department of Energy announced $900 million for the next generation of nuclear power. This investment in Gen III+ Small Modular Reactor will help bring about smaller and more flexible nuclear reactors with smaller footprints. Congress also passed a bill meant to streamline nuclear power and help push on to the 4th generation of reactors
Vice President Harris announced a $1.5 billion dollar aid package to Ukraine. $500 million will go toward repairing Ukraine's devastated energy sector which has been disrupted by Russian bombing. $324 million will go toward emergency energy infrastructure repair. $379 million in humanitarian assistance from the State Department and the U.S. Agency for International Development to help refugees and other people impacted by the war.
America pledged $315 million in new aid for Sudan. Sudan's on-going civil war has lead to nearly apocalyptic conditions in the country. Director of USAID, Samantha Power, warned that Sudan could quickly become the largest famine the world has seen since Ethiopia in the early 1980s when a million people died over 2 years. The US aid includes food and water aid as well as malnutrition screening and treatment for young children.
Bonus: Maryland Governor Wes Moore pardoned more than 175,000 people for marijuana convictions. This mirrors President Biden's pardoning of people convicted of federal marijuana charges in 2022 and December 2023. President Biden is not able to pardon people for state level crimes so called on Governors to copy his action and pardon people in their own state. Wes Moore, a Democrat, was elected in 2022 replacing Republican Larry Hogan.

Things trump has stated he wants to do if he is reelected in 24:
End birth right citizenship for kids of illegal immigrants (very clearly unconstitutional)
End DACA
Oversee the biggest mass deportation ever for any and all illegal immigrants, giving national gaurd full reign to deport any undocumented immigrant (would absolutely destroy our economy)
End all racial equity programs and give himself full reign to fund anyone who he believes was discriminated against (January 6ers, proud boys, etc.)
Allow presidents to deny funding approved by congress (he was impeached for this when he withheld resources to ukraine.... would pretty much just kill the checks/balances and the power a president has)
Give himself the right to enact martial law if he believes police aren't doing their job in stopping protests
End public school diversity, inclusion and equity programs and cut funding for public schools who he believes are teaching critical race theory (none are)
End early and absentee voting so people can only vote on election day with voter ID
Give himself the full authority to fire any federal officer who he believes is "corrupt or incompetent" and replace them with loyalists (aka, fire his political foes and replace them with ppl who will do his dirty work for him)
Let's make one thing perfectly clear: trump is a clear danger to our country. We are not exaggerating when we say trump is dangerously close to Hitler. The things he wants to do have one very clear similarity with all of them: it gives HIM MORE POWER and takes power away from other branches. It gives him authority to define things such as critical race theory or gender ideology. It allows him to override the constitutions meaning. Everything gives him more power and THAT is dangerous. Lots of things would hopefully get shut down in court (as they should) but it proves that trump truly believes he should have full control if he's president, it completely goes against our founding fathers and the creation of checks and balances
It's not that biden is good, he's not either, but I will gladly vote for biden for another 20 years over wanna be Hitler trump. Every person needs to step up and vote blue in 2024, we must stop trump from destroying our country.
