kisses before dinner — steve comes home to his girls after a long day. 2k, mom!reader
Steve has a back ache twinging between his shoulders that takes his breath away as he takes the step up into the front door. It gets caught on the latch, which is awesome, Steve’s so glad you’re being safe late at night, but deplorable in that he has wood grain etched into his jaw and no way inside.
“Girls?” He knocks the glass pane. “Anybody home?”
Everyone should be home. Your car is in the driveway, the girls’ shoes are by the wall. He pushes the door open as far as he can (not far) and weasels his face into the gap to look for you. It’s dark besides the upstairs bathroom light.
Steve calls your name a few times, but eventually comes to the realisation that you’re all asleep and he’s locked out. He closes the door and heads back to his car to scrounge the spare back door key from under his seat.
He fights through the garden gate covered in brambles to the backyard. It hasn’t been touched since summer, forgotten things left to the elements. Avery’s bike flakes with copper coloured rust against the wall. The trampoline net is tangled and fallen off of one side. There are plastic cups in the stinging nettles growing back beneath it and gummy bears swollen with water along the paving stones like some poor retelling of Hansel and Gretel. He unlocks the back door and promptly knocks over the trash can he’d left in front of it. His back whines as he cleans it away, but at least it’s warm inside.
It’s good to be home.
He shoves the toppled garbage back into the can, washes tomato sauce off of his hands in the sink, and lets himself bask in his own poorly lit company for a moment, rubbing his tired eyes. He was hoping for a welcome party. It took longer to help Robin move than they’d anticipated.
“I won’t be back for a while,” he’d said apologetically down the phone.
“Okie dokie,” you’d crooned. He didn’t need to see you to know there was a baby in your lap. “Just come home when you can, babe. And lift with your knees! I’ll put your plate in the fridge, yes? Love you.” Your voice turned to sugar. “Love you, love you, love you, honey.” You definitely weren’t talking to him at that point. Mother of my kids, he’d thought reverently, the strength of a thousand men restored for an hour or two before the fatigue truly set in and he and Robin considered leaving the rest of her furniture on her new front lawn.
He scratches his hair from his eyes with both hands. Mother of my kids, he thinks again. You’ve actually managed to keep the kitchen tidy, the only evidence of a day of play being the grape juice rings on the dining table placemats. How the fuck you’ve done it is a miracle worth marvelling. Three children, one (admittedly smaller) baby bump, and a full eighteen hours by yourself. You’re very impressive.
He decides to tell you emphatically with his face in your neck. He should shower, and he will apologise to you for subjecting you to his sweaty hair in the morning. You’ll shrug off his apology, say something sweet about for better or worse or maybe wrinkle your nose and kiss him anyways.
Steve honestly can’t find any shame about how much he likes you. Like and love can begin to diverge in a marriage, especially after kids when your duty as parents is more important than it is as partners, but you’ve yet to let him pull away, and he won’t give you a reason to. He’ll keep trying as hard as possible to be a husband you can adore. And you don’t have to do much, really. Realistically you give the majority of yourself every day to Steve and your kids, but he would cling to you if you got sick of it. He knows he would. You could turn hermit and live under the bed, and Steve would spend half his life on his stomach just looking at you.
Half trying to pull you out again. The other half getting the girls ready for school. He’s so tired he doesn’t realise that this is too many halves.
When he gets to the top of the stairs he feels like a lifetime has passed since he left that morning, bright and early at 5AM. There’d been driving, car swaps, booing at people from behind the wheel, a hundred boxes, a million trips up and down the stairs, and a suspicious washing machine recalibration. This was without the cold coke drinking, peanuts, popcorn, mistimed movie references, and the obligatory insulting of Robin’s girlfriend’s mauve chaise, of which Robin refused to participate.
Between all that, there’d been worrying, and a want for more phone calls. Promise me you’ll call me if you need anything at all, he’d said that morning, giving your face a fond caress. There’s a confidence that comes with this much love. Steve can pour every inch of his affection for you into one touch and knows you’ll soak it up like a sponge. Really. Any problems, any stress, any tantrums. Just call me. I’m twenty minutes away.
You were grateful if amused, telling him he didn’t need to worry so much, and then offering him another slice of toast.
Is it weird how much I love my wife? he wonders, pushing open the bedroom door gently.
You’re actually awake! He’s shocked and a little betrayed to find you looking at him, but the betrayal fades when he notices the swelling around your eyes and your trembling arm as you hoist yourself up under Avery’s weight. He’s woken you up coming in.
“Sorry,” he mouths, frowning at your shakiness.
You manage a smile and beckon him forward. The problem is the little ladies strewn about in the way. Avery drools on your chest while Dove takes up the entirety of Steve’s side, spread into a star shape, and Bethie snores loudly by your knees. An especially aggressive one makes him laugh as he rounds the bed to your side.
“Hello,” he whispers, taking your face into a loving hand, “sorry I’m back so late.”
You smile into his palm but don’t say anything.
“You okay? Had a good day?” he asks.
You hum something nonsensical. He wipes at your cheek in the rough way you enjoy, your face bumped with every stroke of his thumb.
“Did you…”  Your eyelashes flutter closed. “Did you eat?”
“Loads. Sorry. I’ll eat my dinner tomorrow.”
You wrinkle your nose. He’s been dying to see it. “Don’t bother, it wasn’t my best.”
“All dinners are your best.”
You cover his hand with yours, and then you steal it away from your cheek and kiss it all over. Steve bends down to hug you.
“Missed you,” you say at the same time. Steve laughs. “Was it a long day?” you ask.
“I could ask you the same thing.”
“It was aeons,” you say. “The girls were good, mostly. Baby not so much.”
“Aw, no,” he croons softly, “what’s she been doing?”
“She won’t let me eat.”
Steve rubs the top of your arm. “I’m sorry, honey. You should’ve called me.”
“What are you gonna do, H?”
He breathes out into the side of your face. “You’re right, of course. What can I do?”
He can’t do a thing to ease your morning sickness, so… Steve ends up taking a knee on the bed beside you to hold you for a while, no rush to lay down even though he aches in strings and shouts. “I’m glad I can’t get pregnant. I’d have hundreds of your babies if I could and it would be torture.”
You laugh at his absurdity in the giggly startled way he’d been hoping for.
“Did you throw up?” he asks, pulling away enough to see your face while his hand starts the soft journey down your front to your bump. You’re about three months along and the bump came quickly. It’s cute and Steve loves it and he tries not to be weird about it but he’s weird about you.
“No, just kept churning. I made eggs for breakfast and we can’t eat them anymore.”
Steve kisses your cheek, the corner of your eye, knowing it’ll make you happy. Your smile follows swiftly after, and he kisses that with gusto. “I don’t even like eggs,” he mumbles.
“You love eggs.”
“What was it like being the stay at home mom today?” he asks.
“Hard. But fun. Avery was being really nice to me all day, did you have something to do with that?”
“Avery’s always nice.”
Your smile widens impossibly, “Yeah, but she was asking me if I wanted to sit down and if I needed a glass of water all day.”
Steve shrugs. “Doesn’t sound like something I’d do.”
“Well don’t do it again, H. She’s just a baby. She doesn’t need to worry about me.”
Steve strokes your forehead, totally in your orbit. “She’s not worrying. Are you worrying about her when you take care of her? And sometimes you need a reminder.”
You chew it over. “Okay… you’re right. You win that one, Harrington. Mostly ‘cos I’m too tired.”
Steve always wins when he gets to slide into bed next to you. You push yourself over and bunch the kids up tighter. There’s not quite enough room for him. He feels as though he’s one little legged kick from falling back out, but he doesn’t mind, wrapping an arm around you and Avery where she’s sliding off of you and onto the mattress between you both. The poor girl is in a deep sleep, dribbling from the corner of her mouth. Steve wipes it away.
“You comfortable enough?” he asks.
“I’m fine. Thank you for asking.”
He rests his head against yours on the pillows. “Missed you.”
“But you had fun, right?”
“It was great. I feel like I ran a marathon.”
“Exhausted?” you ask.
“And accomplished… You sure you’re okay? It was a long day by yourself. That stunt you pulled in the kitchen? Incredible.”
“I thought you’d like that. I told the girls you’d buy them a pony.”
“You did not.”
You laugh into his cheek. “No, I didn't, you caught me… I’m fine, really. I did miss you. It’s not nice, not seeing you. I’m used to a couple of hours, but it started feeling wrong when it was dark out, I… it’s silly but I was thinking about how horrible it would be if you never came back–”
Your pitch lifts up as Steve gasps and slaps a hand over your mouth (doesn’t slap, but covers, big hand on your lips and pressing them shut without sympathy).
“Don’t be ridiculous.” He meets your eyes, smiling hard despite the fatigue clinging to you both, and doesn’t buckle, even as you kiss his palm again. “Pregnancy brain is a scary thing.”
Your eyes turn to melting. He’s putty immediately, pulling your hand away to caress your cheek.
“Wanna be crazy in love in the morning?” he asks gently. You put your arm behind Avery’s back and smile as she snuggles into your ribs. Steve kisses your nose. “Go to sleep, honey. I can feel how tired you are. Back to normal in the morning.”
“Love you, Steve.”
“Love you, too.”

𖡡 JASPER, CHICAGO - 1990.
Two more months to go and you felt as if it was even longer than that.
But Steve felt as if it could be any minute now, making you practically push him out of the door so he could make it to work on time and you get some peace, promising if anything happened you’d call Eddie or Robin.
He didn’t like the sound of that, but did it to please you anyway.
You love Steve, really love him.
But sometimes you needed a moment to yourself. Especially now.
Your feet was propped up, ankles slightly swollen, with a bowl of cheese puffs and another small bowl of sour cream resting on swell of your stomach.
You would’ve cringed at the thought several months ago, but right now? It was heaven.
The door opens, keys being dropped into the bowl.
“I’m telling you, Suzie misses me!”
“Dude, she broke up with you,” Steve says pointedly. “For a reason.”
“It was a stupid reason.”
You shake your head, smiling as they both step into the living room. Dustin excitedly drops his bag, making his way over.
“I’ve missed you!”
“I’ve missed you too, Dusty.” You grin, watching as he plops next to you.
Steve had - reluctantly - agreed to let Dustin stay. (He was nervous that he might break something and it would cause you to hurt yourself, or rather, if you cleaned too much, you’d immediately go into labor.)
You were the one to tell Steve that he could stay, as long as he was careful.
And when you give him that look when he’s about to question if it’s a good idea, he agrees.
“What are you eating?”
“Cheese puffs and sour cream,” You grin. “Eddie and Robin is on their way with a strawberry milkshake.”
Dustin’s face screws up, but Steve pouts. “Honey, if you wanted me to get you a milkshake, you could’ve told me before I left and I would’ve brought you back one before picking him up.”
“I know you would’ve, but I didn’t want him ti get kidnapped.”
“They would immediately take him back to the airport.”
“Hey!” Dustin throws his hands up.
There’s a knock before the door is opened. “We come baring milkshakes.”
You stand, Steve is immediately by your side, helping you up.
“Gimmie one, please.” You waddle towards Robin, grabbing the styrofoam cup from her hand, taking a long sip.
You hum, nodding as you close your eyes.
“This is definitely what I needed,” You glance between the both of them. “Thank you.”
“Mhm,” Eddie smiles and holds out a gift bag. “I wasn’t able to get the little gremlin anything for the baby shower, but here you go.”
“Eds,” You shake your head. “You didn’t have to. It’s okay.”
“I know. But still,” He grins. “I think you’ll like it.”
You set the cup down and Steve eyes the bag cautiously. You grab the pink bag from him, sparkles falling to the carpet. You pull the mix of white and pink tissue paper out of the bag.
In the bottom is a folded up onesie and dress. You reach in the bag and unfold it, placing the bag on the table.
The onesie was a green, long sleeved one with Metallica Justice For All album. Steve throws Eddie a look.
“What if she doesn’t like Metallica?”
Eddie smirks. “Oh, she will.”
You laugh a bit, unfolding the dress that had tiny white skulls all over it.
“Thank you, Eddie. I can’t wait til shes able to wear them.”
He grins, rocking back and forth on his heels.
“And I can’t wait to play her songs on the guitar.”
Robin speaks up. “I’ll be sure to get her some earplugs.”
-
TWO MONTHS LATER.
It was past the due date and you were getting nervous.
Nothing has helped your water break. There were tiny concentrations, but nothing to major.
Steve was calling the house on the dot every hour, sometimes you and Dustin ignored it, which made him go into a frenzy and call Robin or Eddie.
The bags were packed and ready to go. You were sure Steve had missed something, but you know he would immediately go back to pick it up.
He had told you to stay in bed and rest. But you certainly didn’t listen.
With a hand on your belly, Dustin visiting Eddie’s and Robin’s apartment upstairs, you were cleaning.
Light cleaning, but cleaning nonetheless.
“If you could, baby, just. . . hurry,” You speak to your bump, thumb moving up and down slightly. “Daddy is about to have a brain aneurysm.”
You laugh into the quiet apartment, sitting down now and letting out a huff.
The door opens and keys drop into the bowl. “Where’s Dustin?” Steve immediately asks.
“At Eddie’s and Robin’s.” You rub your hand up and down, not looking up at him.
“What?! What if you would’ve went into labor and no one was here, huh? What would’ve-”
“Baby,” You finally look at him. He stops and stares at you with wet, wide, brown eyes. You pat the free spot next to you. He huffs our a breath, walking over and sitting down next to you, careful not to make any sort of movement. “I’m not fragile or sick, I’m pregnant. If something would’ve happened, I would’ve called them immediately. You should know this.”
He looks at your swollen belly sadly. “Do you think she’s okay?”
“She might be shy,” You tease softly. You smile once you see the corner of his lip curl into a small smile. His hand reaches out to rest on your stomach. Yours rest on his cheek. “I promise you, I’m okay. . . She’s okay.”
He only nods slightly, tapping softly before standing from the couch. “You hungry?” He leans down, hands resting on the couch. You lean back to stare up at him.
“Nope. Are you? I could make you-”
“I’ll make it,” He’s quick to cut you off. “You stay here and rest.” He leans down more, pressing a quick kiss to your forehead before lifting up and making his way to the kitchen.
You shake your head and sigh, closing your eyes as you lean your head back against the soft cushion.
You wince slightly, moving an inch. Something wet catches your attention. Eyes flying open, you look down.
“Uh. . . Steve?” You call out.
“Change your mind on the sandwich? I knew you would, that’s why-”
“No,” You say simply, staring up at the boy who held two plates. “I, uh, I think my water broke.”
The plates drop, bread and sandwich meat flying everywhere, and he quickly makes his way over to you. “Oh, my god. Okay. . . Okay. This- this is happening. Finally. Uh, what do you need? Do you need anything?”
“I need to get into the car and go to the hospital. That would be nice.” You wince again, trying to stand. He’s quick to help pull you up.
“Right. Okay, yeah. Hospital. Let me get the bags!” He quickly makes his way to the room. You waddle over to the phone, quickly dialing your friends number.
“Hello?”
“Robs, hey, it’s me,” You wince again, pressing a hand to the wall. “Uh, it’s time?”
There’s silence - then there’s screaming so loud that you have to pull the phone away from your ear.
“Hello?” You say into the phone before the dial tone echos into your ear. You shake your head, placing the phone back onto the receiver.
There’s a stumbling and a dull thud. You glance over to see Steve on the floor.
“Sorry! Sorry! I’m okay!” He declares, standing from the floor and lifting up the suitcase.
You shake your head and the door is flying open. “Let’s go! What are we waiting on!”
“Steve, what are you doing?!”
“The baby is almost-"
“Can everyone just be quiet, please?!” You don’t mean to snap, but the yelling wasn’t helping your pain at all. “Sorry,” You breathe. “But yelling isn’t going to make this go any faster, okay?”
They all nod, breathless.
“Dustin,” You say, and he perks up. “Beside the bed is the camcorder. Grab it.” He nods, walking past everyone quickly.
“Eddie, you’re driving.”
“Oh, no. Nope. That is not happening.” Steve shakes his head.
“Steve,” You turn to look at him. “I would rather you be beside me on the way there,” You quickly look at Eddie. “No offense.”
“None taken.”
You turn back to Steve. “And his focus will be on the road. If you were driving, you’d be all over the place. And I’d rather get there safely than you have a wreck.”
“She’s right.” Robin points out.
Steve sighs because, of course he knows, you’re right.
“Fine.”
You smile softly, but wince after. He steps closer. “I’m okay. Robs, can you go with Eddie and take the suitcase so Steve doesn’t accidentally make the clothes fly all over the place?”
She giggles at the thought but nods, walking over and yanking it from Steve’s hand. “Give it, Dingus.”
He rolls his eyes, watching as they quickly walk out. Dustin steps out. “What took you so long?!” Steve turns to him.
“I had to pee!”
Steve pinches his brows and stares at the boy. Dustin walks out of the apartment, you and Steve following behind, Steve’s hand never leaves your back.
-
Your eyes slowly flutter open, glancing at Steve who was bouncing baby Nadia - or ‘gremlin’ Eddie affectionately calls her - in his arms.
She was so tiny and chunky.
You grin at the two, knowing (and hoping) Dustin had recorded them for a bit so you could have it on tape.
Steve was humming softly, fingertip slowly dragging across the baby’s soft nose.
“Stevie.” You say softly.
He quickly turns, smiling softly at you and walking over carefully to sit next to you.
One leg stays stretched out and the other is bent, careful not to dig into your thigh.
“I knew you’d be a good father.” You sit up carefully, reaching over and running a forehead over her cheek. Some of her brown hair was poking out from the pink beanie.
He blushes from the compliment, although he turns it around to you - always one to never to take compliments well. “You were awesome.”
“Thank you, Stevie,” You place a quick soft, peck to his lips. “Thank you for staying.”
“Are you kidding me? I wouldn’t miss this for the world.” He knows what you mean.
You smile sadly and look away, leaning your head against his shoulder. He places his lips to the top of your head.
“I love you.” He mumbles.
“I love you too.” You nod softly, sniffing quietly.
He decides not to say anything more, besides one thing. “Five more to go?”
You laugh softly, nodding as you stare up with him with love pouring from your eyes. “Five more to go.”
Dustin smiles from the door, pulling the camera away once he has a good second or two of the kiss, leaning against the wall.
“I think I might become a producer.” He shrugs.
Eddie lifts a brow at him. “You’ve had a couple of jobs in mind.”
“Yeah, but this might stick.” Dustin grins, walking away.
Eddie rolls his eyes and peeks into the room. He smiles softly at the scene - almost too perfect to be true.

✮⋆。°✩⋆˙ a christmas miracle

Tumblr media
It was hard not announcing the news to Steve. Having to attend your first scan without him was heartbreaking, but the look upon the nurse’s face after you told her you were going to wrap up the ultrasound photo, along with a card saying “Merry Christmas Daddy” and a pair of small, cream, woolen socks, just confirmed your decision was the right one.
You and Steve were in a sort of weird situation. You had stopped using protection, but weren’t in a position were you were actively trying to get pregnant. You agreed that any time from now was an okay time for the two of you to have a child, but also weren’t bothered if the pregnancy tests came back negative.
But, a little Christmas miracle decided to form inside of you, the test showing two lines on December 11th, 1999.
Steve and Alena had gone grocery shopping for an hour, the perfect opportunity for you to wrap Steve’s gift.
Rolling out the wrapping paper, you placed a grey, fluffy blanket in the centre, before laying on top the Christmas card which read:
Hi Daddy.
I’m six weeks old today!
I can’t wait to meet you soon! I’m planning to enter the world on August 20th, 2000.
My mom is keeping me very safe right now as I grow, but I’ll still be listening out for you from inside my home.
See you in nine months.
Love, your future child <3
And as you were about to place the ultrasound photo next to the cream baby socks you previous put underneath the card, your eyes started welling with tears once more.
Was it the hormones? Maybe. But, something in you felt this was all natural. You were growing a human life inside of you, one that has half of your DNA and the other half the love of your life’s. That was something to bask in the intense emotion of.
With everything laid out neatly, you reached over for the sellotape, folding over the edges and carefully sticking them in place.
Wrapping the gift in a pretty cream bow, matching the socks inside, and adding a label reading “To my darling Stevie,” you added it to the pile of increasing gifts in the corner of yours and Steve’s bedroom.
Now, just a week to go until he gets his surprise.
You cradle your stomach, despite the size not increasing at all yet, and whisper to your unborn child “A week and he’ll know, my love. Your beautiful existence will be known.”
Tumblr media
“Mom! Dad! Wake up! Wake up!”
You are awoken by the sound of your bouncing ten-year-old, aggressively rocking your fiancé as he groans loudly, his eyes adjusting to the light peaking through the window.
“Mornin’ pumpkin,” he murmurs, you opening up one eye as Alena’s full set of brand-new adult teeth smile right at you.
“And what are you doing up so early, missy?” you ask, the clock on the bedside table next to Steve shining a bright 6:00 in the morning, illuminating the room in a red glow.
“Mom” she drags out, rolling her eyes playfully, “You know what day it is!”
You tap your chin lightly, playing along with the joke, “Hmm… I feel as if I may need a reminder.”
“It’s Christmas Mom! And I may or may not have seen all the presents you left underneath the tree…” her vocal pitch increases, looking away in a guilty look as Steve reaches up and pulls her down into his body, the girl screaming as he ruffles her hair.
“Did someone be naughty and peak underneath the tree?” he grits through his teeth, Alena shouting in a reply, “I didn’t mean to, I promise! I saw it on the way to your room!”
You begin to tickle her sides as Steve holds her in place against his chest, making the girl scream in delight loudly, “Is someone now on Santa’s naughty list?”
“Mom…” she pouts her lips, a grumpy expression adorning her face as you sigh sadly, “I know sweet cheeks, you don’t believe in him anymore.”
“I’m sorry…”
You hold out your arms as you wrap her in a warm hug, “Don’t be sorry, baby. I knew you would realise eventually. You’re getting too old!”
She gasps and looks into your eyes, crossing her arms over her chest, “I am not old! You and Dad are old.”
You start giggling in shock as Steve just opens his mouth wide, “You better watch yourself, pumpkin.”
“Yeah,” you hold up a finger in warning, before pointing it over to Steve, “Dad doesn’t like being reminded he’s in his mid-thirties.”
And now it is Steve’s turn to attack you, but instead with aggressive kisses, littering them up your neck and across your face lightly, Alena now old enough to understand the playful love between the two of you. “You’re almost thirty as well, you know.”
“Two more years to go, babe. I’m still in my prime development decade,” you smirk at him.
And it wasn’t just you who was developing.
Tumblr media
A loud gasp can be heard along with the shredding of paper as Alena holds up her latest gift, “You actually got me it?”
For such a small gadget, the Barbie Digital Camera cost you $70, the most expensive gift yet, but maybe not the one which will cause the biggest reaction.
“Of course I did! It’s the one thing you kept pointing at in the magazine!”
She giggles with a bright smile, “Thank you! Thank you!”
She launches herself at you, the motherly instinct in you clutching onto your stomach to protect your unborn child, hoping Steve didn’t notice the movement. The surprise would be known in the next half an hour.
“And after you’ve taken your photos, we can connect it to Dad’s computer and see it come to life! How cool is that?”
“Can I take it to school?” she asks, clutching the box in her hands.
“I assume you can! But, just ask Mrs. Critchley before you take it in, okay?”
“Okay!” she smiles, plopping herself back down on the carpet to open the rest of her gifts.
Tumblr media
Your hands began to sweat. Alena was all done opening her presents, patiently waiting for you and Steve to unwrap yours.
Steve let you attend to your gifts first. Everything from a brand-new necklace designed with a rose quartz, matching your engagement ring, to the latest Nokia phone, you were thankful for everything he had bought you, praising him with many gentle kisses and warm hugs.
Now, it was Steve’s turn. You specifically told him to leave one present until last, leading him to give you an eyebrow raise and a shrug before simply agreeing, used to your weirdness by now. You got him everything from a new cologne to a new pair of Nike shoes, the soles of his old pair wearing thin from how much he was working over the Christmas holidays.
But, after one final kiss, it was finally time.
“Can I open this now?” Steve jokes, the nerves deeply settling in your stomach. You don’t even know why you were worried, you had stopped using protection in mutual agreement, knowing kids could be a possibility from that result. There was just a voice in your head trying to convince you an awful reaction would occur.
“Uh, yeah… Yeah, you can.”
“Hey,” he puts an arm on your shoulder, “Why are you so nervous?”
You lightly chuckle, “You’ll find out once you open the gift.”
Even after all of these years, Steve still wasn’t the smartest. Verbal cues were not his strong suit, but my God could he read body language like a champ.
He gives you a confused look before unwrapping the cream-coloured bow, delicately tearing apart the paper as his eyes immediately notice the ultrasound scan.
He may be oblivious, but he isn’t that oblivious. He has one very similar in his bedside table drawer of his sweet ten-year-old daughter sat next to him.
The tears form at his eyes before he can even recognise them. Small sniffles enter the atmosphere as his hazel eyes make contact with you, “Are you serious?”
And the tears follow suit for you, nodding frantically as he leans across the floor to collect you in his arms, crying into your shoulder.
“How far along?” he mumbles into your shoulder, tears dripping onto the red fabric of your dress.
“Read the card and you’ll find out.”
Steve was too drawn into the ultrasound scan to even notice the card you had gotten him. Releasing from the hug, he keeps a gentle hand on the small of your back, picking up the card and carefully opening it, reading the words you had written, the tears increasing as he noticed it was from the perspective of his baby.
“Wha— How? When did you get this done?” he stutters out, still in complete shock of the entire moment.
“Pregnancy test has been in the bathroom trash can for two weeks. I was scared you were going to notice it for a while, but then I remembered it’s you, and you don’t notice anything,” you giggle, Steve not even bothered by the joking insult, too caught up in his own emotions, “And two Thursday’s ago, I didn’t go to work. Went to the hospital and got the scan, and just hung around Starcourt until the time I would normally come home.”
“Well, you fooled me,” he chuckles, leaning in for a kiss which you gladly accept, cupping his cheeks as you smile into it.
“I love you so much, beautiful girl. And I love the baby who is growing inside of you. You’re so strong. Your body is so strong. I just— I can’t wait. I can’t wait to meet them.”
His hand had migrated down to your stomach, gently cradling the unborn child inside of you.
Alena had finally looked up from her Etch-a-Sketch, noticing the tears falling down both yours and Steve’s cheeks, your hands holding tightly onto each side of his head as your foreheads were leant against each other, kneeling on the soft carpet of the living room.
“Mom? Dad? Why are you crying?”
Steve turns around to face his daughter, you looking softly into her eyes, “Because Mom is having a baby, sweetie.”
Steve passes her the ultrasound scan, her face scrunching up in confusion as she points at it, “Why is it just a black blob?”
Steve begins laughing as his head falls onto your shoulder, sweetly rubbing up and down the sides of your waist.
“Because when a baby is first made, it starts out as a black blob and then grows into the full size baby we all know and love,” you explain gently to her.
“Hmm…” she takes in, before asking her next question, “But how did it get there?”
Your eyes widen as Steve’s hands stop on your waist, refusing to lift his head and look at his daughter.
You smile through the awkwardness, remembering that her sex education lessons would start in a matter of months, “You’ll find out soon, baby.”

Little Moments | Dad!Steve x Mom!Reader
[1.0K Words]
summary: A lazy Sunday morning with Steve and your two daughters
content: fluff, slight suggestive language, mention of mom guilt, steve and reader being the best parents
_
It’s a rare occurrence for you and Steve to wake up alone in your bed and when you did, it was a bittersweet feeling. Of course you both loved the alone time, but you also missed cuddles with your babies.
Today was one of those mornings.
You were up before Steve and by some miracle, your two daughters were still sound asleep.
Steve was lying on his side, facing you and he looked so dreamy.
His lips were slightly parted and sure, he might’ve drooled a little, but he was still as breathtaking as ever.
You move closer to him and lay on your side to admire him.
You start to grow restless and begin to slowly trace over his features with your index finger.
Your finger gently glides over his brow bone and he twitches, making you stop in case he wakes.
After a few seconds, you trace his cheekbone, then the bridge of his nose, his cupid's bow, and then his lips. You do it over and over again, while admiring his freckles that you’ve seen a thousand times. You’ll never get tired of staring at him.
“Mm that feels nice” Steve says, keeping his eyes closed.
“How long have you been awake, Mr. Harrington?” You trace your finger over his lips one last time and he gives your fingertip a kiss.
“Long enough, Mrs. Harrington. Are the goobers up yet?” He finally opens his eyes and your heart warms at the sight of his golden irises.
“Do you really think it would be this peaceful if they were up?” You answer and he chuckles.
He moves to lay on his back and motions for you to snuggle up to him.
You lay your head on his chest and let your arm rest around his waist. He wraps an arm around your shoulders and pulls you in as close as possible.
“Do you not love me anymore?” He asks in a faux serious tone.
“What?” You move your head to look up at him.
“I have yet to receive my morning kiss. Should I be expecting divorce papers?”
You roll your eyes. “So dramatic”
You give a peck. Then two pecks. Then three pecks that turn into a slow, intense kiss.
You don’t move for what feels like hours.
“Wanna get lucky?” He wiggles his eyebrows and you’re about to say yes when you hear two little feet pitter-patter down the hallway. You give him one last kiss as a way to rain check your morning plans.
Your bedroom door opens and your oldest, Olivia, stands in the doorway. “Mommy?”
“Hi, baby. Good morning.” Her hair is an absolute mess, much like yours and Steve’s, and her pajamas are uncomfortably twisted and out of whack. She’s so cute you just wanna squeeze her.
“Want me to fix your pjs, Liv?” You offer and she walks over to the bed. You go to help her up, but as she told you last time she got in your bed, she’s a big girl now. She balls the sheets in her fists to pull herself up.
She plops herself in your lap and you straighten her pajamas out. You kiss her forehead and her little arms wrap around your neck, snuggling into you. Your heart swells so much it might burst.
“What is up with my girls not giving me love this morning?” Steve reaches out and tickles her, causing her to giggle uncontrollably.
“Momma, help me!” She exclaims, still laughing and you start playfully fighting off Steve.
He moves to sit on his knees. “I think mommy needs tickles too”
All of the sudden, there’s a tickle war and the room is filled with laughter. “Okay, okay! I’m calling a truce!” You cry out and Steve retreats, falling back on the bed. You lie back on the pillows and Olivia lays on your stomach. Steve admits he's a little jealous, but he’ll never get over the sight of his girls snuggling.
Eventually, she finds her way into Steve’s lap and he sticks his tongue out at you. “You’re daddy’s girl, huh?”
“Yeah! Mommy’s too!” She’s perfect.
Moments of silence pass until you hear Claire crying and you suddenly feel terribly guilty.
“I got her,” Steve assures you. Livvy crawls over to snuggle you again.
“Why is sissy sad?” Olivia asks, concerned. She looks up at you and is an exact replica of her dad. You can’t help but give her cheeks a squeeze.
“Oh, baby, she’s not sad. She just can’t walk or talk yet, so that’s how we know she needs something” You rub her back to comfort her. She truly is the best big sister. Her and Claire are two years apart, so you were worried about jealousy issues, but Liv adores her baby sister.
Steve always says it’s because she has your heart of gold.
You always say it’s because she has his heart of gold.
You and Liv start to drift back to sleep until Steve walks back in the room.
“Diapers changed and she just had her bottle” He informs you. You give him a loving smile as a thank you.
“How’s my Claire-bear? I’m sorry we had a tickle fight without you, hun” You move to give her a kiss and Olivia does the same.
She coos and smiles at you. She’s always been a smiley baby. “Because she’s gonna be a goofball just like her mom” you recall Steve saying and it makes you smile.
Steve shifts closer to you. He has Claire laying on his chest while Liv lays on yours. Once everyone’s comfortable, he throws an arm around you and kisses the top of your head.
“Liv, are you hungry, baby?” You ask in a worried tone.
“Wanna go back to sleep, mommy”
“She’s fine, babe. You’re the best mom in the history of moms, promise” Steve reassures you, knowing you’ve been struggling with mom guilt. “Isn’t that right, Livvy?”
“You’re my favorite mommy ever” She says and a yawn follows shortly after. You kiss the top of her head in appreciation.
You all fall back asleep in a snuggle pile. It’s a little claustrophobic and you’re definitely starting to sweat, but it’s the best feeling in the world.
You can’t wait for tomorrow morning and every morning after that.

steddie x afab!reader pregnancy headcanons
summary: steddie x reader where they’re in a long term relationship and have been trying for a baby and finally reader gets pregnant (might make this a series if people like it)
warnings: pregnancy (obviously), reader is slightly based on me so they’ve always wanted kids of their own, no description of reader’s looks, mentions of smut
part two | part three
wanna support me? buy me a ko-fi
Tumblr media
it was steve who brought it up first, with his dream of having six little nuggets
obviously it was up to you, since you would be the one pregnant, but you’ve always wanted children of your own as well and since the three of you had been dating for a while the time felt right
the sex was intense with both steve and eddie trying to knock you up (breeding kink)
even though it was planned, eddie still freaked out when you actually got pregnant. he didn’t have a good relationship with his parents and he’s terrified of fucking up with his own kid :(
a lot of comforting and reminding him that he’s an amazing person who deserves all the love in the world <33 plus you and steve would be right there with him figuring it out too
for the whole pregnancy he goes from really excited sometimes to really nervous - he has more mood changes than you do
steve was so! so! so happy! could not stop smiling for like a week straight
eddie got a job at a record store and steve started taking more shifts at family video. you also had a job at a thrift store but stopped working at seven months pregnant
eddie talks to your belly all the time
he plays music for the baby too, saying he wants to make sure they inherit his good music taste and not steve’s
steve becomes even more protective. literally will not let you do anything on your own. “oh no you don’t need to do that, let me” or “why are you getting up?”
you need to have a conversation with him about how you appreciate it, but it gets annoying when he treats you like you can’t do anything
lots of apology kisses
but on the topic of protective, he gets so scared of you showering alone and maybe slipping so he starts helping you shower, washing your body gently and praising you the whole time. (he was adamant about absolutely no shower sex, saying it wasn’t safe with you so far along)
eddie is weird, so when you start getting weird and lowkey sometimes gross food cravings, he is eating them with you
they both love giving you massages, holding your stomach from behind, literally anything that’ll take away some of your pain :((
steve cooks for you to make sure you’re getting enough nutrients for yourself and the baby
steve rubbing lotion on your stretch marks at night while eddie plays guitar and sings to you both (you three?)
steve is the type to come home with baby clothes or toys even if it’s something you really don’t need. “i saw it and i could just picture out baby wearing this so i had to buy it”
eddie will try to sneak either metal artist names or names from books onto your baby name list

“Babe, have you seen my glasses?” Steve yelled, rifling through the mess of things in the drawer beside the bed. TV remote, bottle of painkillers, a bunch of hair clips, but no glasses.
Your voice came muffled from somewhere else in the house. “Should be next to the bed!”
“Yeah, I’m looking now, but I can’t find them!” He knew he was wearing them last night before bed, and he definitely remembered putting them on the table when he went to sleep, so where the hell were they?
Before he could look any further, a rattle from the closet made him freeze. Steve’s breath caught in his chest, mind jumping to every worst possible case scenario at what could possibly be lurking behind those doors. His hand curled around the familiar smooth wood of his trusty baseball bat from under the bed, knuckles flexing white on the handle as he inched across the room towards the closet.
He was fully ready to start swinging, ready to protect his home and his family, when he heard…a giggle?
Steve’s shoulders slumped in relief when he realized it wasn’t an otherworldly monster lying in wait, but a smaller, much cuter one, with chestnut locks just like his and a cute nose just like yours. One who liked polka dots and pepperoni pizza and stealing her dad’s slippers in the morning—who probably had his glasses as well.
He flung open the doors on the last word, eyes immediately landing on the pigtailed, gap-toothed little girl sitting cross-legged in the dirty clothes bin, Steve’s too big glasses slipping down the bridge of her adorable nose with every barely contained peal of laughter that shook her tiny shoulders.

“Boo!” Maisie exclaimed, throwing her arms in the air whilst she jumped out at him. Steve feigned surprise, clutching at his chest and falling back against the carpeted floor with a dramatic shout. She scrambled to his side with a gleeful cackle, planting her tiny hands on his shoulders to lean over him. “Did I get you good, Daddy?”
“So good, my sweet. Almost gave your old dad a heart attack.” He nodded, flicking one of Maisie’s pigtails playfully.
“So good, my sweet. Almost gave your old dad a heart attack.” He nodded, flicking one of Maisie’s pigtails playfully.
“You’re not old!”
“Thanks, Mais, I—”
“You’re super old!” She blurted. Steve gawped at his grinning six year old incredulously.
“I’m super old? Could super old do this?!” He hollered, springing up at Maisie and rolling over so he was the one bent over her now, wiggling his fingers mischievously before digging them into her side lightly. “Could super old be a tickle monster???”
Maisie’s shrieking giggles bounced off the bedroom walls as she attempted to squirm out of Steve’s grasp with no avail, and he'd be lying if he said it wasn’t one of his favorite sounds in the whole universe.
“What in the world is going on here?”
Steve looked up to see you standing in the doorway, Nora propped on your hip as you arched an amused eyebrow at the scene before you. He raised his hands in surrender, giving Maisie the chance to escape from his vicious assault, scrambling over to wrap herself around your leg.
“I scared Daddy!” She said proudly, beaming up at you.
A surprised chuckle fell from your lips. “Did you now?”
“Uh huh! Got him really good too, Mommy.”
“Little gremlin hid in the closet and everything. Even had my glasses too, ‘s why I couldn’t find them.” added Steve, leaning back on his haunches and wiggling his fingers at Nora with a smile. She wriggled around in your arms almost immediately, making grabby hands at her dad until you set her down gently, easing your husband’s glasses off Maisie’s face and placing them atop Nora’s brown curls. You both watched as she toddled unsteadily towards Steve, babbling nonsensically to herself until she was gathered into his outstretched arms.
“Hi, dada,” She mumbled, face-planting into the soft wool of his sweater. Steve smoothed a hand down her back, plucking the silver frames off her head and putting them on before pressing a soft kiss to her forehead.
“Well, you, my little troublemaker, are supposed to be getting dressed,” You hummed, stooping down to boop Maisie’s nose. “The faster you do, the faster we can get to the park!”
That definitely enticed her, because her chocolate brown eyes widened and she nodded furiously, peeling herself away from you and bolting down the hallway without another word.
“I’ll take care of this one while you go get ready too?” Steve offered, heaving himself to his feet with Nora’s sticky fingers tangled in his hair. “Ow, shi—shoot, darlin’, what is that?”
“‘S yogo, dada!” She squealed, splaying one hand out on his cheek excitedly. “Strawberry yogo!”
“Strawberry yogurt, huh? I bet it was real good since you got it all over your hands.”
“Oh, she had a blast with it. Painted the kitchen table pink and all.” You chuckled, crossing the room to kiss his cheek, then Nora’s, before hurrying to the bathroom to get ready. “You’re the best, honey!”
By the time you’d finished getting dressed, Steve had corralled the girls to the front entryway, where he was trying to wrangle Nora into her coat whilst Maisie clung to his back not unlike a monkey.
Your heart grew four sizes at the sight of them all. Your family.
Honestly, if you somehow went back in time and told fifteen year old you that one day you’d be happily married to Steve “The Hair” Harrington with two beautiful little girls, you would’ve laughed in your own face. But facing the potential end of the world and almost dying, not once, not twice, but three times really had a way of bringing people together. And even though you’d both been through some pretty terrifying shit (and still had nightmares too), life was good now. Perfect, even. You wouldn’t trade it for anything in the world.
Maisie’s squeals of laughter pulled you out of your thoughts, refocusing to see that she was now dangling upside down in Steve’s arms as he cackled maniacally. Something bumped into your leg, and you glanced down to see that it was actually someone. A certain, previously yogurt covered someone.
Nora raised her arms at you and you obliged, hoisting her into your arms with a grunt before turning eye to the other two. “Are you two goofballs ready to go to the park now, or do you need a minute?”
“Park.” Maisie nodded solemnly, maneuvering herself upright in Steve’s arms and turning her wide-smiled gaze on him. “Piggyback ride, Daddy?”
“Your legs work just fine, little miss.” Steve narrowed his eyes at her, to which she just smiled even bigger, missing tooth and all. You liked to call it her ‘anything smile’, because when she brought it into play, she could get her poor old dad to do anything she wanted. Case in point. “Oh alright, fine. Gimme a smooch first.”
Maisie gave Steve a sloppy kiss on the cheek that he pretended to wipe off in faux disgust, but he shifted her until she was situated comfortably against his back. “Ready to go now, Mommy!”
You tugged Nora’s knit hat (a handmade gift from Robin for her second birthday that she absolutely adored) down around her ears a little tighter before you all ventured outside.
The brisk autumn air nipped at your cheeks as the four of you made your way to the small park just down the road, leaves crunching underfoot in a swirl of yellows and reds and burnt oranges.
About halfway there, Nora started to wriggle around in your arms, kicking her tiny legs to be put down and start walking alongside you.
“Nora, baby, you gotta hold someone’s hand when you’re walking, okay?” You said, to which she furrowed her eyebrows at you, but eventually nodded. Whether or not she actually understood what you were saying, you had no idea, but you set her down on the sidewalk anyway.
“Mazzie!” She squealed, sticking her hand in the air towards her sister, who was still settled contently against Steve’s back. “Mazzie, hold!”
“See that, monkey? Nora bug wants to hold your hand,” Steve chuckled, squeezing Maisie’s leg until she giggled. “You wanna climb on off of me?” She nodded enthusiastically, to which Steve dangled her until both her feet were firmly planted on the ground. “Careful, you two. Watch the cracks in the sidewalk.”
“I got it, Daddy.” Maisie said firmly, aiming a curt nod at him before taking Nora’s hand gently, which sent the toddler into a fit of excited giggles. “Come on, Nora bug!”
Your insides melted to mush at Maisie using Steve’s nickname for Nora, even more so when she pulled her younger sister’s hat back down from where it was riding up again, just like you were about to do. Your girls were a perfect mixture of both you and Steve.
Steve looped his arm through yours, pulling you close enough to press a kiss to the side of your head, grinning fondly as you watched the two girls amble along in front of you. “We sure do make cute kids, don’tcha think?”
“Pretty sure they got their looks from you, Mister Indianapolis 1972.” You teased, nudging him in the ribs playfully.
“God, I knew I shouldn’t’ve told you about that. I’m never living it down, am I?”
“Not in this lifetime.”
“I was five and my mother forced me into it, babe. I didn’t have a choice!”
“I’m so looking forward to the day I can show those pictures to the girls.”
“You kept them?!?!”
“‘Course I did.” You chirped, grinning cheekily. Steve pouted (very dramatically, might you add). “You had to have known I’d keep those treasures forever, honey. You know me.”
“Yeah, yeah, whatever,” He huffed, dragging a hand through his hair. “But payback will come for you. Mark my words. Might go swing by your parents’ house and see what I can dig up. I think your mom would be delighted to help me.”
“You wouldn’t.”
“Try me, sweetheart.”
“That’s fine,” You shrugged. “I’ll just bring the girls over to Robin and Nancy’s for a little bit sometime. I’m sure they both have plenty of stories from your glory days.”
Steve’s cheeks went beet red, eyes widening in what you could only assume was horror. “Okay, okay, you win. I give up, just don’t—don’t let them traumatize our babies.”
“You’re so cute, Stevie.” You smiled at him sweetly, squeezing his bicep affectionately before pulling away to join the girls as you all entered the park.
Maisie was sure to leave Nora with you and Steve before beelining straight for the play structure off in the distance, instantly scurrying up to the top and waving frantically at the two of you. She’d always been an avid climber of things—just ask Steve and her uncles, who’d all had Maisie the monkey crawling all over them at least once in their lives. And Maisie would never let her dad know, but her Uncle Eddie was her favorite jungle gym. He always let her launch herself at him and hang around wherever, while Steve tended to go more protective dad mode about it all.
Nora, on the other hand, wasn’t too keen on the jungle gym yet, instead opting to toddle alongside you and Steve, picking up random things off the ground every so often and passing them off to her dad. A few pebbles here, a couple pieces of bark there, a fistful of crumbly leaves, Steve’s pockets were full of nature soon enough. Once his were filled to the brim, she started to shove things into her own tinier ones, half of the stuff falling right back out.
“Babe, take some rocks.” Steve whispered, holding out a handful towards you. “Take them, I can’t fit any more in my pockets!”
“You know you can just drop them, right?” You replied quietly, raising an eyebrow.
“Yeah I know, but she wants me to hold them!”
“She’s two! She won’t even know they’re gone.”
“Are you sure?”
“Has she ever noticed how her pockets are always empty when we come back to the park?”
Steve’s eyebrows furrowed in thought. “No…”
“There’s your answer then.”
He took a quick gander at his surroundings, glancing down at Nora to ensure that she was paying no attention to him before flinging the rocks quickly into a nearby pile of leaves.
Eventually, Nora gravitated towards Maisie at the play structure, even going so far as taking a few rides down the swirly slide. Meanwhile, you and Steve took a seat on a bench a little ways away, not too close, but near enough that you could keep an eye on them both. His arm quickly found its way around your shoulders to pull you against him yet again, free hand drawing lazy circles on your knee as the two of you fawned over your cute kids like proud parents.
Around noon, you decided it was time to call it a day, as the girls had been playing for almost two hours, and it was almost time for lunch.
“C’mon, kiddos, it’s time to go home!” You called, waving for the girls to come to you and Steve. Maisie obliged willingly, but one look at Nora and you knew she was about to throw a fit. A deep frown curved her lips, brows pinched, nose scrunched, in a way that almost reminded you of Steve’s upset face when you thought of it. “Honey, I think—”
Steve saw it too, instantly setting at a brisk pace towards the girls. “Yep, I’m on it.”
Neither of you got there fast enough to quell the wail that escaped Nora’s mouth, surprisingly loud for such a tiny person.
Maisie clung to your leg, wrapping her arms around your knee with a wide eyed gaze aimed up at you. “Is she okay?”
“I think she’s just a little upset we have to go home now, baby.” You explained gently, brushing her hair behind her ear. “Remember how you used to get really sad before we left the park?” Maisie nodded knowingly. “Dad’s got her now, so everything should be okay.”
“Nora bug, what’s wrong?” Steve cooed, kneeling down so he was eye level with his teary eyed toddler. “Wanna tell dada what’s got you so upset?”
“Don’t wanna go!” She sniffled, lower lip trembling.
“You don’t wanna go home? That’s okay, baby, I know you’re having fun.” He hummed, gently wiping the tears from her rosy cheeks with the pads of his thumbs. Nora burrowed into Steve’s chest with a whimper, clinging to her dad with as much force as she could muster. “Tell you what, if we leave now, we can come back tomorrow and play some more.”
“All day?”
“All day, bug.” He confirmed, stretching out the first word to entice her even more.
She peered up at him thoughtfully as she pondered his proposition, tracing the buttons on his jacket with her fingers. “Pomise?”
“I promise.” That seemed to meet her standards, because she nodded, attempting to shove her way into his arms to get him to pick her up. As soon as he scooped her up, he pressed a smacking kiss to her forehead and she beamed, previous grievances long since forgotten. “All good? Yeah, you’re happy as a clam now, aren’t ya?” She shimmied around in his arms joyously, snuggling right up against him with a giggle. “Crisis averted!”
“Dad saves the day, yet again,” You chuckled, reaching out to tickle Nora’s hand as Steve made his way over to you and Maisie.
He aimed a wink at you, ruffling Maisie’s hair playfully. “Don’t I always?”
“Daddy’s a hero!” She exclaimed, grinning from ear to ear.
“Yes, he is,” You hummed, accepting the hand that she offered up to you. Steve was a hero, in more ways than one. He was your hero, Maisie’s hero—Hawkins’ hero (even if they didn’t know it). Maisie’s other hand held Steve’s all the way home, skipping between the two of you happily.
-------
You and Steve had the after-park routine down pat, jumping right into it as soon as you got home. Nora’s pockets got emptied out on the porch, you threw all the girls’ dirty park clothes in the washer while Steve took them to the bathroom to get them all showered and clean, and then you usually helped finish up with one while he took care of the other.
Only this time, he’d assured you that he had it handled, dropping a kiss to the top of your head before disappearing down the hall with both girls in his arms.
After a while of not hearing the usual splishing, splashing, and squealing, you made your way to the bedroom to see if Steve needed help, only to catch sight of him sprawled out on top of the covers, Maisie tucked against one side of him and Nora tucked on the other, both of their heads resting on his chest. All three of them were fast asleep, looking like your perfect picture of heaven.
Hurrying over to the dresser, you grabbed the camera that Jonathan had gifted the two of you when Maisie was first born, snapping a quick picture of your husband and his squeaky clean girls for the scrapbook you were planning on giving him for Christmas. You snuck out of the room after that, careful to shut the door gently on the way out so you wouldn’t wake any of them.
You were alone for quite a bit, enough time for you to tidy up around the house before starting on lunch for when the girls inevitably woke up hungry. Soft music played from the radio on the windowsill as you rifled through the fridge for sandwich fixings, gathering everything and setting up camp at the counter to assemble.
The house was strangely quiet without them running around with Steve chasing after them pretending to be King Kong—one of their favorite games to play with their dad. You'd always watch them from afar, smiling to yourself when he eventually nabbed them both in his arms and tossed them onto the couch for tickles, reveling in the good memories they were making, memories that you both hoped they would look back on fondly when they eventually grew older.
Stuck in your own thoughts, you didn’t notice Steve creep into the kitchen until he was right behind you, arms snaking around your waist tightly.
“Whatcha makin’?” He asked softly, chin nuzzling into the crook of your neck like it was second nature—which, at this point, it was.
“Turkey and cheese,” You hummed, stifling a giggle at the feeling of his breath puffing against your neck. “No crusts for the girls.”
“And where are their crusts going?”
“Into your sandwich.”
“I assumed so,” He sighed good-naturedly, defeatedly accepting the scrap of bread you held up to his lips. “A father’s duties are never finished.”
“Poor you.” You snickered. “Girls still asleep?”
“Nora’s still out like a light. Maisie’s drawing in her room. Did you know Nora’s got a mean kick? She kicked the shit outta me in her sleep, we should really put her on a peewee soccer team when she's old enough. Could have a star on our hands.”
“Have I ever told you how much I love you?” You blurted, turning around in his arms. You knew it was an out-of-the-blue question, and that he knew you loved him, but you just wanted to tell him again, on the off chance that he’d forgotten. Steve looked momentarily confused, but pleasantly surprised, smiling so warmly that you’d be fine never seeing sunshine again so long as you had him and that smile.
“Yeah, you do. All the time. I don’t mind hearing it over again though.” He murmured, cheeks flushing a bashful pink under your fingertips.
“You’re an amazing husband and an even better dad,” You continued, hooking your arms around his neck. “And I love you. Like, a lot.”
Steve’s hands splayed across your back, gliding along your skin underneath your sweater delicately as he maneuvered the two of you towards the center of the kitchen, where he had enough room to hug you fully. “Where’s all this high praise coming from?”
“I dunno…I just feel like I don’t tell you enough.”
“Believe me, darling, you tell me plenty enough. In more ways than one, in more places than one.”
“Oh, gross, Steve—”
“Sorry, sorry,” He chuckled, head hanging down to press his nose against the dip of your shoulder. His actions knocked his glasses askew, but he was quick to right them on his face. “I’m the luckiest guy on Earth, I swear.”
You tilted your chin up at him, eyes alight with mirth. “How so?”
“Well, since you’re fishing for compliments, I’ll let you in on it,” He rolled his eyes playfully, squeezing at your hip gently. “I’m lucky that I met you. I’m lucky you decided to give my sorry ass a chance. I’m lucky that neither of us died trying to save the world all those times. And I’m super, doubly—no, quadruply lucky that I get to have this perfect life with you and our perfect girls.”
Boy, did Steve Harrington have a way with his words.
You beamed at him, grinning so wide your cheeks hurt with the effort. “You’re such a sap, Stevie.”
“Can you just humor me for one second? I’m trying to be heartfelt and shit, and here you are laughing at me goddamnit!”
That only brought another laugh out of you, one that you did your best to quell by tightening your arms around his neck. “I’m sorry!” You exclaimed, kissing his nose, his cheeks, his chin, anywhere you could reach, pressing giggled ‘i love you’s to his pretty face. Steve spluttered out halfhearted protests as you littered kisses all over his face, ones that quickly turned into gasps of laughter at your now roaming hands.
“Okay, stop, stop,” He managed to gasp, honey eyes shining bright with tears. “I’m gonna pee myself, babe, stop!”
You stopped, but not before pressing a firm peck to his lips. “I love you.” You repeated, just one more time for good measure.
His response was near immediate, spoken pressed against your cheek like he wanted his words to seep into your skin, into your bloodstream, all through your veins so you’d always have them within you. “I love you too.”
You couldn’t help the laugh that fell from your lips, not aimed at him or ill intended in any way, just a culmination of all the things you were feeling in this very moment, here, with Steve. Why it came out as a laugh of all things, you had no idea, but it triggered a soft chuckle from him, which bubbled into a louder one, until you had to shush him through your own giggles so as to try to not wake Nora.
“You’re perfect, d’you know that? Absolutely freaking perfect.” Steve mumbled once he’d composed himself, eyes shining with the fondest light as he gazed down at you. The kind of light that made you feel golden, like you were his light. “And y’know what they say—perfect wife, perfect life.”
“Isn’t it ‘happy wife, happy life’?”
“That too.”
“Well, consider me the happiest wife.”
“Oh, good! I’m glad.” He kissed you before you could think of something to say, only to pull away seconds later, looking perplexed. “Is there a husband version of that saying?”
“What?”
“Y’know, happy husband, happy…something?”
“Nothing rhymes with husband, Stevie.”
“I’ll come up with one. Maybe even trademark it, then we’ll become filthy rich.” His lips twisted in thought, nose scrunching. “M’kay, husband. Something that rhymes with—” Now it was your turn to shut him up with a kiss, pressing your lips against his in such a way that the words died in his throat.
You didn’t need money or anything of the sort to be happy as long as you had Steve, your girls, and the perfect little life you’d made for yourselves in this not-so-perfect little town.

Waiting on the dial tone as you called home, Steve was alone with Teddy. So you knew to wait and give him a few rings before trying your hand again.
“Yello, Harrington Residence! Teddy ‘member what we talked about when the phone rings?” You could hear the faint giggles and little voice respond ‘Yes, Daddy.’
“Hi babies, it’s me.” You responded, tired voice evident of your distress.
“Teddy go in the living room and get your stuffy.” Steve asks him with sicky sweetness a small distraction “Hey, what’s going on? Are you okay?” Steve voice lowers his voice,
“I’m not feeling to well Stevie, boss let me off early. Could you come pick me up?”
“Yeah-yeah of course-. No not that stuffy the other one, we’re gonna go on a car ride to Nana and Pop-pop’s.” Shriek of Nana Joyce rung through the phone, splicing straight through your skull. “I’ll be there soon, just hold on for us. I’ll bring you home.”
“ ‘Mkay, love you. Don’t break any traffic laws.” You leaned against the cool metal of the phone box.
“I love you most. I’ll see you soon.” With that the dial-tone rang back and you set off to sit on the curb of the diner, waiting for your husband. He came not even 20 minutes after your phone call, parking job shoddy at the very least but all in one piece nonetheless. You stood slowly, Steve sprung out of the car opening the passenger door just shy before you could reach the handle. You leaned against him as he hugged you, arm limp at your side. Fatigue overtaking your body when you finally sat down in the car, mostly.
“You okay, Sweets?” Steve knelt down to eye level, putting his hand on along the roundness of your knees lovingly. You sighed, hunching over.
“I swear if this is the first trimester of pregnancy aches, I don’t think I could possibly give birth again without an assortment of drugs lined up at the ready.” You tried to joke, blowing a laugh out your nose. Which made Steve smile bright and big.
“Well unfortunately we burnt up the singular Russians lab years ago, so I can’t get you anything foreign.” You both laughed, “Have you eaten anything yet?”
“No, everything makes me want to puke my spleen out.” He got up and set your bag in the back, shuffling for something else behind the seat. You got the courage to swing each leg into the car. Leaning into the leather seats, it was pretty muggy outside. Steve’s head came into view again with antacid and water, along with a brownie he’d made the other night with Teddy. Dancing to Bob Segar’s greatest hits. You smiled taking the pill and the brownie, he opened the water bottle placing it between your thighs. He leaned over placing a kiss onto your forehead, unnecessarily aiding you with the seatbelt and gently closing the door before hopping in the driver's seat.
“Stevie, you shouldn’t be driving this late give me a minute. I was just scared to be by myself.”
“I’m fine, scouts honor.” You furrowed your brow at him, he was beat up so much in high school his vision and hearing is slightly impaired on one side. “I know the way home like the back of my hand, I’ve gotten used to the blurriness.” Hunger subsided but the pain slightly increased as he was driving home, something felt wrong. Pressing yours eyes shut to aid in the nausea, wringing your knuckles into the leather seats as waves crash over you they stopped with a sharp inhale.
“Hey what’s going on? Not sleeping already are we?” his eyes flickered between you and the road, placing a hand on top of your thigh. Shaking your head, realizing that probably wasn't the best idea as you fought not to get sick in Steve’s BMW. Not that it hadn’t happened before, you were both 21 for a whole year.
“I think I just over did it today, I bet a bath and definitely some sleep and cuddles will help. I’m all dizzy and cramping.” Groaning, pushing the back of your head into the cushion behind it. Holding his hand tightly, breathing through the cramps.
“Do you want to go to the hospital?” Steve asked, rubbing his thumb along your knuckles.
“It’s okay, just wanna go home and be comfortable.” You assured him as he turned to go home. When finally seeing the dim parking lot relief oozed for your shoulders as he pulled into the assigned spot. You unbuckled, he held tightly to you walking through the apartment complex, up the stairs to the apartment. Only letting go as he started a bath. Sitting on the edge of the already made bed slightly confused, everything was dizzy and blurry until Steve knelt down in front of you. Helping you to the bathroom, sitting on the toilet while the steam clouded the mirror.
“Okay, here I set everything up. If your okay being alone for a minute. I’m going downstairs to make some dinner quickly. I’ll check up on you, then we can go get Teddy from the Byers if you’re feeling better. Otherwise you know Joyce and Hop love the company now.” he kissed the top of your head closing the bathroom door behind him.
Beginning to undress, moving the water between your fingers to see how hot it was. Taking off the now ever tightening diner uniform, stopping at your underwear there was a small red spot. You’d had a rough birth with Teddy, your doctors weren’t concerned for later pregnancies. The cramps came over you once again distracting, nearly knocking the wind out of you. You quickly sunk deep into the rose scented waters, moving your hands through your wet hair. Beginning to massage your abdomen, it was extremely hard, the pressure was unbearable. Then white shocks of pain started flowing through your center, twisting relentlessly. You groaned and thrashed slightly in the water, you couldn’t catch your breath. There was burning going down your legs, you opened your shut eyes to see the water turned a bright red. You yelled for Steve in shock, pain and so many other things bottled up inside. Hyperventilating, when the door crashed open you were barely able to keep your eyes open as Steve rushed to you. Diving over your frame, lifting you out of the water and a towel wrapping around you. You saw lights flickering to and from each eye, small pinches in your arms. Darkness came over your consciousness, pain subsided.  Waves of movement and lights came about once in a while, as well as voices. Several voices through time and time again, until you opened your eyes to strange surroundings. Waking up from a really good nap, taking in your surroundings; beeping of monitors, extremely bright lights, a sickly clean smell with a mix of sale metal. Moving just your eyes around you could tell it was a hospital, there was warmth to your left hand. You dizzily tried to move your head to look over, Steve had one hand in yours while the rest of himself was toppled over leaning on the other propped up by his legs. Rubbing and scratching at his scalp,
"Stevie?" You said just above a whisper, his eyes met yours. He jumped forward on his feet, leaning over the bed.
“Baby? Oh my god,” he brushed your hair from your face, endlessly kissing everywhere. Feather light kisses on your hand, cheek, temple, jaw and forehead, “I thought I wouldn’t see those beautiful eyes soon enough, Jesus Christ,” he pressed a button on the wall and a faint red light flickered. You yawned with a dry mouth, suddenly aware you are hooked up to the beeping machines. Along with an IV and Blood bag, there was also something taped to your leg. You shifted trying to sit up comfortably when an extremely tall older man pushed the curtain open.
"Woah, hold on there Mrs. Harrington. You're quite freshly out of the ER. I'm an anesthesiologist, just checking you feel alright before I get Dr. Kerr. Any confusion, chills or feelings of vomiting?” you shook your head, feeling some drowsiness but overall not terrible.
“Great, and any pain I should alert your charge Nurse of?” you shook your head again, moving your taped up hand over your stomach feeling excessive fabric there. You looked at Steve who held tension in his eyes, “alright well, I wish you a speedy recovery ma’am, I’ll let my colleague know you’re ready.” the man wrote something on the clipboard, before walking out and shutting the curtains again.
“Hey, you’re here. That’s the only thing that matters-” Steve started.
“What happened? Is the baby okay?” you asked him scared, his face contorted with pain. Sitting back down pulling his tiny chair closer, hanging his head in shame. Red, all I saw was red. Those words were so similar to ones said to you, what seemed like a lifetime ago. They rang through you like a séance but desired something else this time, you felt Steve’s other arm reach up holding yours fully in place. He was shaking before he came up for air,
“I’m sorry Sweetheart, there’s nothing I could do. I-” The curtain ripped out to reveal a stout man your primary doctor and a even tinier woman full of gusto. Who you knew to be Dr. Kerr and a probable Nurse,
“Evening Mr. and Mrs. Harrington. Just wanted to give you a final diagnosis as well as some time for us to discuss after care.” Steve wiped his face, you looked at the wrinkles in the curtain. Dazed with all the drugs you were probably on, everything felt dry. You didn’t even realize you were smacking your lips until a cup appeared in front of you. It was ice chips with a spoon added to the top, the woman handing it to you nodded before stepping back behind where Dr. Kerr had sat across from Steve. “Mrs. Harrington, do you remember much?” you shook your head in response, Steve reached out to hold the cup as your free hand scooped up ice slowly. The cold crunch sent a shiver down your spine, a hand still tangled with Steve’s rings rolling against each other. “Then please know that I’m giving you the facts and that it may indeed be hard to hear.” you took another scoopful, making short eye contact with Steve before putting the spoon back into the cup. "We weren't able to save the baby, it was an ectopic pregnancy. Have you heard of them before?” You shook your head. “It was the main cause of the abdominal hemorrhage or severe bleeding, so you unfortunately miscarried…” You swallowed hard, looking at Dr. Kerr for the first time since giving birth to Teddy. His eyes were a dark blue, rich with knowledge and no doubt pain. You felt your heart grow heavy, breathing then swallowing. Repeating the word over and over again.
“Miscarried.” You said out loud, out of body only stating it as he did without hesitation.
“Yes, there would have been no way to save it. It's very important that you know it's not your fault, as well the risks moving forward fertility wise are concerning but always possible." You felt so many things at once; numb, angry, relieved more than anything from the pain. Steve’s voice churned you from your thoughts,
"Why's that?" Steve asked, holding your hand a bit closer to his chest.
"More often than not after one ectopic miscarriage, the risk for another one is extremely high. About 1 in every 10 women, which is more than a simple miscarriage. As well, since we did have to expel the rest of the fetus. We have no way to measure fertility until the future, it determines how suitable the uterus will be unless we simply try other means of procreation. Those I'm afraid are very expensive but worth the health and wellness of your partner. If you wish to continue to have a child once she’s healed, you're both fairly young. There will be plenty of time for you Mrs. Harrington." Your heart was shattering, tear slipping into the collar over your starchy hospital gown, Steve pinched his nose sniffling with you.
"I would like to keep you here for at least 24 hours if that's alright, you may stay with her unless they run a test or scan Mr. Harrington. Otherwise, you'll be shown some exercises by physical therapist to prevent blood clots. To just give us more peace of mind that you will not hemorrhage again. Since the blood loss was towards the extreme as well as the circumstances. I do not want to take any chances, despite how much I enjoy your family.” Looking at Dr. Kerr you gave him a hopeful smile, “You'll be moved into a private room shortly for the remainder of your stay, I have walks scheduled every four hours for you to do with a Medical Assistant. Until they clear you from a one person assist, please do not try to do much but the assigned walking and of course eating in an hour would be fine. Is there anything else I can do for you tonight or questions that you have?" He reached out holding your shoulder comfortingly, like a father figure would.
“No.” You shook your head, tears hadn't stopped since he entered but your breath finally catching when you spoke clued the other into your own misery, guilt swarming between all of you.
“Our family is in the lobby, when can they see her?” Steve asks for you, you look up from the curtain across the walls to his face. His eyes, red, heavy with dark circles and so swollen, lips dry and his hair a mess. He looked so young next to you, you were both so young barely 25.
“As soon as she is completely aware from the general anesthesia, and moved to the private room. However, now that she is awake I will need you to step outside into the hall Mr. Harrington.” You shoot your eyes to the doctor.
“Why?” you ask, your voice is so quiet and hoarse.
“Just a precaution while my nurse asks you a series of questions. Because of how tragic the event was we just need to ensure somethings.” You start to speak, but Steve squeezes your hands.
“It’s okay, Sweets. They probably just, just want to confirm my story. I’ll be right in the hall waiting for them to be done.” Steve stands from the chair pulled next to your bed, and places your hand on the side of the bed before walking out with the doctor. You finally notice Steve is in light brown scrubs, they open the curtain where dozen of others are either alone or holding their sick loved ones.
“Oh I almost forgot, sorry it’s my on-call night. But healing should be about 2 to 4 weeks, so nothing should be inserted into your body after they remove the catheter.” You curtly nodded at him again as Steve walked with him shaking Dr. Kerr’s hand. Shortly after a tall dark skinned woman in dark blue scrubs comes over and closes the curtain.
“Hello Mrs. Harrington, I’m Nurse Maywood. I need to ask you a series of questions, are you alright with that?”
“Yes, ma’am.” She moves to the foot of your bed so you don’t have to strain to see her.
“Alright I need you to answer as truthfully as possible each time. First one, how are things going at home?” You almost laugh, until her raised eyebrow shows signs of extreme seriousness.
“We’ve been working a lot, both my husband and I. While taking care of our young son, until tonight things have been blissful.”
“Has any of yours or Mr. Harrington’s behavior's changed due to this pregnancy?”
“No.” Her brow raised again, (blanking) you to continue. “I’m sorry, is Steve in trouble?”
“Mrs. Harrington we just want to ensure your health and safety.”
“Steve is a wonderful husband and father, he picked me up when I started having pain tonight despite taking care of our son as well. He has never emotionally or physically hurt me or my child.”
“That’s enough for me, Ms. I am truly sorry for your loss, and do recommend postpartum therapy for all women I see. You are not alone.”
“Yes, I appreciate the gesture. I just need my family now.” She smiles, respectfully leaving bringing Steve to you again. Followed by more Nurses in scrub but the original pitete Nurse from Dr. Kerr.
“Hey, you needed me? Did everything go okay?” you nod at him, with a somber smile. The two people look at your chart, one walks away before one begins to speak to you.
“Y/N Harrington? We’re about to move you to a private room now, if you just step aside for a minute Mr. Harrington.” You push yourself up on the pillow a little, still extremely numb in your abdomen. The woman comes back with a large wheelchair, then takes your IV and other monitors and puts them on the tall pole attached to the back of the chair. Steve pats your head and moves out of their way, the man who spoke to you draws the curtain. They both put on gloves, Steve staying by your head as they removed your catheter. Running his hand through your hair, soothingly. They wiped everything, before coming back up to speak to you.
“Alright honey, we're going to do a two person assist to get you into the wheelchair. Since you're still quite numb and drowsy, each of us is going to take hold of the support under you, you’ll sit up completely, she’ll move your legs off the side of the bed while I hold you upright. Then we’ll use a belt above your sternum and pivot you to the wheelchair. Sound like a plan?” You nod and do exactly as they instruct, to their surprise you have more strength than they thought. “Thanks Shelby. Alright Mr. Harrington if you’ll just follow us.” it’s quite a way before he carts you into a room. The belt still strapped to your chest he pivots and assists you into the bed by himself while Steve watches from the foot of the bed. The man leaves you two alone, closing the door behind him. Steve doesn’t move, until you reach your hand out to him. He forces a smile, walking around and grabbing it with both hands. You pat the side of the bed, and try to scootch over making room for him.
“Hey, hey. I don’t want you hurting yourself, careful.” He stops your hips,
“I just want you to hold me,” you say innocently through your lashes, Steve instantly melts. Putting his arms under your legs and behind your back moving you over just enough that he can lay sideways next to you. You have to lay on your back but it doesn’t mean you can’t turn your face to his. You brush the hair away from his eyes, caressing the side of his face, he sighs as his heavy eyes close.
“We should let them know you're awake,” he whispers to you, eyes closed. Holding the forearm caressing his face, the other had the IVs still attached so you kept it against your midsection. His free arm draped across your lap, below.
“We should get some sleep first, where’s Teddy?” he props his head on his hand with his elbow flush against the bed, trying to avoid sleep.
“He’s with Aunt Robin and Dustin at home. So just Joyce and Hopper. Nancy and Jonathan have been keeping the others updated. Everyone went to the Wheelers to wait for news.” he yawns huge at the word news.
“So you haven’t slept for like, over 36 hours?” he shrugged.
“I was terrified, Robin kept me updated on Teddy I was able to say goodnight to him. He-he doesn’t know yet, I didn’t know what to say. I don’t think-”
“Steve, one thing at a time. You need to sleep. It’s okay we’ll figure it out, this is not good for you.” he groaned neck cracking as he rolled off the bed.
“And I will, but first. I’m going to go get them and get us some refreshments and gross hospital food.” grabbing his wallet from the front of his brown scrub pants. “Also Joyce brought clothes for us and these are a little ripe.” He pulls at the collar of his scrubs, and grabs the call button clipping it to your pillow. “I’ll be right back, promise.” You take hold of the hand he was using and press the side of your face with it.
“I would kiss it but we’re in a hospital, and I don’t know when you last washed them.”
“Yeah that’s fair,” He leans down leaving you with the impression of his kiss on your temple and thoughts. Caressing the side of your face before walking out the door. After a minute of contemplating you pull the sheet down and slowly bring the nightgown up. You of course weren’t wearing anything except this thin gown, ribbed gray socks and a ginormous diaper they slipped on after removing the catheter. Holding your mouth to quiet the sobs, you needed to calm down before they came back. They were all already so worried about you, so much you can’t imagine how Steve was still standing. You let your mind wander until feeling like you had to go to the bathroom, it hurt to let it sit in your bladder so you pressed the call button. After a few moments there was a knock on the door, someone announced themselves before entering, “Hello, Mrs. Harrington, what can I help you with?”
“Am I allowed to use the restroom with assistance or do-do I have to pee myself?” You asked quietly,
“Great question, if you're uncomfortable standing right now. You can most definitely use the alternative, but it is good to start moving right away. Just like you normally would postpartum.” She helped you use the restroom, changing the pull up as you continued to bleed. She assured you, it will likely occur for a couple days until your hormones balance again. There was a small shower and everything in this room, you were probably in Labor and Delivery now.  You were able to wash your hands and wipe your face off a bit, before leaving she helped you to an upright position in the bed and got you some ice chips. It took about 15 minutes total. She made you feel more human. Instead of overwhelming you with information she was making you as comfortable as possible. Knocks clambered the door, opening to reveal your family. The answer to salvation in the darkest of times.

Messing Around In IKEA
Tumblr media
Summary: Your pregnant with your second child, with your husband Steve. You have recently moved into a new house. Time to get furniture at the best store there is IKEA.
Trope: Dad!Steve x Mom!reader
A/N: I have never been in an IKEA store before :/ so bare with me. Also sorry I thought this posted yesterday and it didn't
Warning: BIG FLUFF, kissing
Word count: 1.0k
30 Day Challenge: Day 4 Send Request <3
The Harrington Clan pulled into the big blue store IKEA. “blue” your son Grayson said “Yes baby it is blue good job” your husband said. Grayson squealed at the praise his dad gave him. Steve pulled into a parking spot, turn off the car then quickly got his carbon copy, Grayson out, “no I want to go with mommy” Even though he was Steve’s twin he is the biggest mommy boy there is, that scared you and Steve a little bit because you weren’t sure how he was going to reattract when the baby comes. After he put Grayson into the cart, he helped you out of the car “My wife” he said taking your hand to help you out “My husband” you said back giving him a kiss, even after years of being with each other your kisses still make him blush. “hi mommy” Grayson chirped “Hi my baby” you said kisses his forehand “My boys ready” you asked “Yes” Grayson eyes went huge coming closer to the store “big” he mumbled. The store was huge, long, tall aisles, many displays, many colors. This was going to be hard.
“Ok where should we start first” Steve asks “Ummm......let’s look for the living room” You had in mind what you wanted a nice big couch to fit all your friends and family, you and Steve want a big family and the house you just brought was going to be your family house. It was a beautiful house it was a light gray with white windows and a lovely porch, 2 story house with 5 bedrooms, a nice big backyard with a pool. It was on the outside of Hawkins, Steve wanted a fresh start and a clean slate to his name, but always wanted to be near his friends just in case they need anything. The gang love coming over at your old place, the harrington house was always so cozy and welcoming, and Grayson loved his aunts and Uncles, especially Uncle Will.
You had some furniture from your old place but the living room is ten times bigger so you need a new couch to match with your old lounge chairs. Grayson was getting fussy in the cart “down Grayson wants down” he started talking in third person a month ago “Ok hang on "Steve told him as he stopped the cart and brought him down “Hold mommy’s hand ok” he nodded and grabbed your hand “mommy hand” you kept walking till you were met with couches “wow that is a lot” you said row and rows of couches were in front of you, so many colors, shapes, and size. “This is going to be harder than I thought” after spending a good 20 minutes looking at couches “Ok this is not working” Steve said “We need a new strategy” he continued. He grabbed Grayson and walked up to a couch and plopped down on it “STEVE” you pointed at the sign Please no seating on the displays “It says no sitting we are laying down” “Steve” “We need to find out of comfortable the couches are because it will be in our house forever and I don’t want an uncomfortable couch so” he patted the spot next to him “Come sit let's find our couch”
Every couch you sat on Steve and Grayson made a pros and cons list “This one is very big, but it feels like carboard” “This one is cool but as sharp corners, and we don’t need them hurting you or the baby” “blue” Grayson said for every blue couch he sat on. At about the hour mark of sitting on couches there was a light gray big couch that got your eye “Let’s try this one” Steve helped you off the yellow couch you were sitting on the you waddle on to the light gray one. “Oh, this one is nice” he said “Just imagine movies nights on this” “I am going to 100% fall asleep on this” “It goes with our chair too” “I think we found it” he said smiling at you. Grayson wasn’t making a sound which scared both of you so you quickly looked over at him “Just like his daddy” you whispered he had fallen asleep mouth open on the couch “I think he likes this one” Steve giggled “He looks so comfortable makes me want to take a nap” you leaned your head on Steve admiring you son as he rubbed your belly “I can’t wait to have our house be filled with little Harringtons” he whispered into your ear while kissing your temple “Me too” you sigh
You don’t remember how it happened, but you were suddenly woken up by a worker “Excuse me um... You're not supposed to be sleeping let alone on the displays” “I'm so sorry it was just such a nice couch and-” “Don’t worry about it this happens all the time would you like to purchase the couch” “Yes please let me wake up my husband” you shook Steve which startled him “What happened” you nodded toward the work “Time to buy the couch” “Oh ok” They wrote down our information and were going to deliver the couch to the house. After paying Steve scooped up Grayson and brought him to the car, he buckled him in then kissed his forehead. He walked over to your side seeing you struggling to get in “I told you, you can’t be getting up and down on things without help” “But you were busy with Grayson and I didn’t want to be a burden” “Babe you are my wife the mother of my kids literally carrying my second child into you there is no way that you are a burden you are my everything” he said sweetly kissing your lips then bring you into the car “Now let's go home I am beat from couch finding” You walked into the house and remember “Babe we didn’t find a dinning set or anything else we needed”

“Dadaaaa!” Little 8 month old Alexandra whined, crawling up her Dada’s tummy to his chest. He chuckled and picked her up, plopping her on his chest in a sitting position and holding her chubby waist so she didn’t fall.
“What, babygirl? What’s got my princess so stressed out?” He asked, knowing she didn’t understand him but not caring. She leaned forward and buried her tiny fists in his hair, humming and cooing to herself.
He chuckled and pinched her tummy, letting her do her thing. She pulled and twisted gently, you were worried she was gonna be like Nancy and Jonathan’s son and pull your hair out from the roots but she was actually such a gentle baby.
“Here ba- oh…what are you doing silly girl?” You asked, bringing breakfast in bed for you and Steve. She turned back, hearing Mama’s voice and she smiled and giggled. You set the tray on your nightstand and picked her up, holding her in the air and then plopping her in your lap making her giggle and laugh.
“Mama!” She said and you smiled, kissing her cheeks. Steve rolled over and hugged your waist, burying his head into your outer thigh and hip. You placed a hand on his head and then said “are you hungry, little mama? Want some boob?”
Her face lit up, “baba!” she said, boy did that girl love to breastfeed. You and Steve both laughed, she was always so eager when it was time to feed. She managed to lift your shirt up and bury her head in your belly, grabbing at your bralette.
You chuckled, taking one arm out of the strap of your bralette and pulling it down, lifting your shirt and helping Alexandra latch. “There you go, hungry girl,” you and she smiled up at you as you cradled her in one arm and brought the breakfast tray in front of you with the other.
Steve smiled up at his girls, watching you munch on a hash brown and coo at the little baby you two made. It made his chest bloom with warmth and happiness.
Eventually you turned your attention to him and made him eat some breakfast too, happier than ever when you realized you both had your days off on the same day. You usually turned the days you both had nothing to do into little family days, sometimes taking Alexandra to the park, or just staying at home playing with her all day.
The three of you ate breakfast together and Alex switched to the other boob after a while, obviously really hungry. “Did you not get enough last night, bub? I’m so sorry, sweetgirl,” you said, rubbing her little tummy.
Steve played with her wavy hair as she continued her breakfast, letting her play with his hand and his wedding ring. You loved watching them bond, and Alex loved her Dada so much. She was definitely a daddy’s girl, there was no question about that.
Once she was done you let her lay on you for a while so she could digest a little and reminded Steve that he can’t play with her just yet every 3 minutes because he’s very impatient. Eventually she got over her post-feed grogginess and crawled over to Steve for playtime.
He smiled and wrapped his hands around her little body, running to the living room where most of her toys were to play with her. You giggled and waited for the movie you were watching to finish before you brought the breakfast dishes out and washed them as you watched Steve run around the room holding Alex as if she was an airplane as she giggled her little head off.
She “crashed” into you a few times, and after a few minutes she “crash landed” onto her play mat. You finished up the dishes and walked over, fixing her hair and her onesie. “Jesus, she’s so giggly she can’t breathe” you joked, she couldn’t stop laughing at Steve.
“That’s because Dada is sooo funny isn’t he?” Steve said, playing with her hands. A few minutes later she was just babbling and playing with you guys’ hair, and hands and trying to grab your face. You blew raspberries on her belly, tickling her as she tried to push you off.
“Mama! ahhh!” She shrieked, making you laugh. You kissed her cheek and she grabbed your face, doing her best to keep you from tickling her more with the little strength she had. Steve pulled her onto his chest, caressing her chubby cheeks and letting her chew on her teething toy, she was almost out of the teething phase but she still liked chewing things just like all babies did.
She reached up for his hair again, scrunching it in her fingers and twisting it around and pulling into makeshift ponytails and giggling at her accomplishment. “She likes your hair today,” you said, rubbing her back. He played with her little baby feet as he said “I can tell”
You smiled and kissed her head, pulling her away slightly. “I’m sorry, baby, but you gotta let daddy be able to see. Get your little booty out of his face” you said and put her behind him, she could pretty much sit up on her own now so you weren’t concerned about her falling.
“Come here, you” he said, pulling you onto him. You straddled his hips, chuckling as he pushed your back down so you were pretty much flush against him. You winced and said “careful Steve, my boobs” “oh- yea, that’s precious cargo sweetheart be careful with those” he said and you shook head, kissing him and gently laying on his chest.
He rubbed your back, both of you laughing at her little baby noises and cooing back at her like you could understand her. “Oh my goodness, Alex. No way, she didn’t say that” he said and Alex practically yelled, making both of you practically cry with laughter.
He sighed and said “fuck, I love you guys so much” You blushed and buried your head in his chest, caressing his ribs. “We love you more” you whispered, kissing over his heart.

Steve Harrington x Reader
A prosaic peek at Steve Harrington’s inability to sleep in and stay in bed and his reasons for changing his ways.
October 1997; a cosy easy morning, where kisses are shared and ABBA songs are sung as a lullaby.
Word count: 4.3K
Content/Warnings: TW for talk of bleeding during pregnancy, borderline neglectful parents.
Mention of sex (18+), not explicit. This contains dad!Steve & mom! reader toward the end; pregnant reader. Kinda rambling. Very soft. Low angst (but not none).
Note: Thank you to my ST rewatch for making me fall for Steve all over again.

Steve Harrington was always an early riser.
As a honey-haired little boy, he spent Saturday mornings on the sofa watching cartoons with the volume dialled low as his parents slept. He knew not to make a mess with the cereal, or the milk, rewarded with a stack of pancakes or a new toy for keeping himself amused as Richard and Katherine Harrington slept off the previous evening’s dinner party hangover.
Always the first awake at sleepovers, he would wait with bated breath for Tommy to stir or feign a sneeze to wake him.
He never had to be dragged from bed to go to school during the week, always up and at ‘em to go see his friends, play tag and swap baseball cards on the playground.
As a sporty and popular teenager, he started running when he didn’t have early swim practice or basketball. Steve rose with the sun and waved to his neighbours politely as his shiny sneakers slapped the pavements of Loch Nora.
He was never sure what he was running from, or towards, but the burn of chilly morning air in his lungs made him feel alive.
When he started going to house parties and hangouts on Saturday nights, his Sundays still started early, dragged to show face at his parent’s church. It was less about faith and god and all about appearances. He snuck out of bedroom windows, hopped white picket fences as the sun rose, fought hangovers as the priest’s voice droned and caught the eyes of pretty girls from the convent school a town over - they always blushed when he smiled at them or dropped them a sly little wink as the collection plate was passed around.
When his parents started travelling more, after the shortlived re-commitment to the church, Steve’s Sunday morning hangovers were kept at bay with cold swims in the pool or hot coffee and loud music in the kitchen as he tried and failed to focus on homework.
Steve started working right out of school as punishment for unsubmitted college applications and lower-than-predicted grades. He volunteered for the opening shifts in Scoops Ahoy and Family Video - he liked the responsibility and having a purpose, having an excuse to be out of the house before his parents could tutt and fuss and lecture him. It was easier when they weren’t there; when the office in Indy needed Richard’s attention more than his wife and son did, when Katherine spotted smears of lipstick on his collars again and insisted she spend some time with him in the city apartment.
In their absence, the Harrington house was a mausoleum of failure that Steve couldn’t bear to be in. So he raised his hand for early delivery shifts and stock takes and drove his friends to school when he didn’t have to, already awake after another night of nightmares, memories of flying fists.
Steve Harrington rose early and burned bright; burned out quickly when he realised he didn’t know what to do with himself or what his purpose was.
He filled his time with making himself useful to other people, chasing and seeking a purpose or a person to fill the gaps and spaces in his chest; the hollows once reserved for the people who didn’t return the outpouring of love he offered so freely, so innocently. He found and made a rag-bag bunch of friends, a found family, who returned the love he deserved in the ways they knew how. Woven and knotted friendship bracelets, squished candy bars, mixtapes, weed sold and rolled at buddy rates or for nothing at all.
Steve Harrington moved to the city with his best friends; a Beemer and a battered van filled with boxes and suitcases. The early morning drive made Steve Harrington glow golden in the rising sun, his excited eyes hidden behind dark-tinted sunglasses as Robin Buckley snored in the passenger seat and Eddie Munson listened to metal at an ear-bleeding volume in his van and flipped Steve off with that big grin in the rearview mirror. They stopped for strong coffee and sweet pancakes and started a new chapter in the city.
When you fell in love with Steve in 1990, he found a reason to stay in bed a little longer. A reason to slow down, soak up the sunshine glow you shone on him.
You spent Saturday nights with friends, a patchwork group cheering on Corroded Coffin and selling T-shirts and tapes at a merch table when they scored a bigger venue and a bigger crowd. Movie nights and takeout Chinese food and a stack of new and old movies from Blockbuster. Date nights at swanky bars and restaurants, with flickering candles and pizza on the way home because you didn’t want the night to end yet. You spent hours in bed together, night and morning, talking about everything under the rising sun and dwindling moon, learning about each other’s life and mapping each other’s body with kisses and gentle touches.
In the morning he gazed at your sleepy softness and took his own pulse to make sure he wasn’t dying. No heart attack, just falling in love.
He brought you cups of coffee and sweet pastries from the bakery a block away when his limbs felt restless. He always got back into bed with you to cuddle and while away the morning without a moment wasted. With Steve, those mornings were syrupy slow; he worshipped you between your thighs and held your hands as the headboard bashed against the wall.
You became Mrs. Steve Harrington in the spring of ‘94.
A small wedding. A big party for your friends. A honeymoon week where every morning felt like a perfect lazy Saturday.
When Steve found his reason to stay in bed, together you created a reason that kept you from it.
Bethany Rose Harrington. Born June 21st 1995.
Beth had her Daddy’s eyes and her Mama’s nose, and the sweetest little dimples in her smiley pink cheeks. She was her Daddy’s little doughnut, her Mama’s little bee. She inherited Steve’s charm and wrapped her extensive collection of doting uncles and aunts right around her tiny finger. She took after you in the way that Steve was completely and utterly in love with her.
Just like her Dad, Beth liked to start the day early. After a few weeks of seeking out and settling into a routine, Steve spent the earliest part of the day feeding his little Bethie her bottle of milk in the cosy armchair nestled in the corner of her pale yellow nursery. As he watched her big brown eyes gaze and blink, felt her tiny fist wrap around his finger, Steve decided that these were the happiest mornings of his life.
On those soft and slow mornings, you could hear Steve’s low murmur to your little girl through the baby monitor when his excitement to see her gummy smile or stop her sad fat tears bypassed the off-switch. You fell back asleep to the sound of Steve telling Beth about how the Cubs and the Bulls (their teams now) were doing this season, or about the walk in the park you were going to go on once ‘beautiful mama’ was awake. He sang to her; never typical lullabies, Queen and ABBA and Dusty Springfield.
Steve basked in the joy of her little smiles, soaked in the soft cooing noises as Beth found her voice to talk back to her Daddy. When she fell asleep again, milk-drunk with her cheek against his heartbeat, Steve watched the morning sky shift and brighten and listened out for the sound of your waking time. The soft thud and shuffle from bed to bathroom, running water, your yawn and stretch, the gentle steps to seek and find him and your little treasure. You filled reams of camera film, documenting Steve as a Dad, your little girl's first weeks and months. Lit by morning light, by afternoon sun and the shade of the tree in your yard, and dusky nighttime lit by nightlights.
When your laundry list of chores allowed it, you took one of your three options on those mornings of parenthood - take turns to bask in the warmth of lavender and milk-scented baby cuddles while the other showered; bring the sleeping beauty back to your bed to gaze at the ten fingers and ten toes you had created together; or leave the sleepy and full-tummied grub to sleep in her crib again to spend the slow dawn hours holding each other and trading kisses, and knotting yourselves up in the sheets together once the doctor gave you the all-clear and a prescription for birth control.
You did plenty of all three.
Summer turned to Autumn, then Winter, and Steve balanced being a father and husband with keeping a roof over your heads and the final year of his programme to get his qualification to become a guidance counsellor. His mornings with Beth were part of his routine, leaving her smiling and drooly for you when he kissed his girls goodbye. Missing him during full days of supervised sessions and hours in the college library when he wasn’t in classes bonded you and Beth, thick as thieves and lovestruck for the golden Harrington boy-turned-man. You made sure that he never missed a moment with how many pictures you took, and Beth saved all of her firsts for when he was home. You coached her to say ‘dada’ in Steve’s absence and he sobbed happy tears when she parroted it back. (He had been coaching her to say ‘mama’ during their early mornings together).
Your late nights of talking turned to early-to-bed nights, sleeping when the baby slept and when your little home was some semblance of clean and tidy. Steve fell asleep to the sound of Bethie’s breath on the monitor, your heart under his cheek and the soft stroke of your fingers in his hair, along the length of his arm.
Both of you were exhausted. Neither of you had ever been happier.
When he graduated in the Summer, you and Beth cheered and clapped for your golden boy along with his best friends - the loudest bunch in the college auditorium. A picture of the Harrington trio - Steve in his shirt and tie and graduation gown balancing a smiley baby and his degree as you kiss his cheek and tickle Beth’s tummy for the camera - was placed with pride on his desk when he started a counsellor job that landed in his lap in the late summer of ‘96. He coached basketball two afternoons a week on the side; it was perfect for him.
You go back to work part-time and you balance taking care of Beth and each other with the utmost care. With help from your family and Steve’s trust fund from the Harrington’s, you make it work. You are what he holds dear, pride of place in the centre of his chest, once vacant and hollow. The gaping space he yearned to fill with the wrong friends, the wrong girls, watery beer and too many cigarettes.
By the Fall of ‘97, Steve had learned to sleep again. Sleep when the baby sleeps. Enjoy your days off. Enjoy every moment. He is. He’s so tired but never happier.
This morning, you wake first.
Your little house in the Chicago suburbs is bathed in autumn darkness on a lazy Saturday.  Six a.m. and Steve snores peacefully.
Beth is silent, dreaming of her two favourite things: fairies and pancakes. That top five list favourites is rounded out by her Daddy and Mama and Mrs. Murphy’s orange cat that visits the backyard.
The littlest Harrington is an early bird too, twirling in your tummy beneath Steve’s protective hand. Until Steve can take the morning shift, you are the early riser.
Beth is your sleepy little dreamer, she loves her bed like her Mama. She sneaks in between you and Steve (and the bump now too) when she wakes too early; you spend those mornings gazing and counting fingers and toes again like when she was a tiny thing.
This baby however seems to take after her father’s love of sport, the way she practices the aim and strength of her kicks on your bladder. You don’t officially know yet (they were less than cooperative at the last ultrasound), but you know it’s a girl. Steve swayed to boy for a day or two before realising you were right. Maybe next time…
The flush and sigh-groan from your aching back pulls Steve from sleep. When you pad back in from the little bathroom, he’s just about upright and wild-haired.
“Y’okay?” Eyes swollen with sleep, he reaches blindly for you to help you back into the cosy nest of blankets.
“Mm, needed to pee.”
You try to keep your cold feet away but Steve sandwiches them between his own size fourteen and always warm feet. His lips brush your shoulder and the back of your neck when you settle into a comfortable position; Bump dictates what will suffice as ‘comfortable’ and settles under her father’s comforting hand. Harrington’s magic touch is famed in your home; settling gassy babies and working out knotted shoulders, fixing leaky faucets and carrying all of the groceries inside in two heavy handfuls, making shadow-puppet shows on the bedroom wall and holding back your hair when you’re not well.
Slowly, small-spooned by Steve’s bigger body, you drift again. Sleep comes and goes like an inconsistent tide, and you are anchored safely in his arms. Baby names ebb and flow into your tired head and you wish Steve was awake to tell you what he thought of ‘Heather’ or ‘Ava’. Whether your (very slow) re-read of Little Women was influencing you too much to ‘Josie’. You wonder about how much candy you should get for the trick-or-treaters, and whether Beth will be too scared to help you answer the door to them this year.
You wish he was awake - because you always wish your every waking moment was spent with Steve Harrington - but you’re so glad he is sleeping soundly, snoring sweetly behind you. You wish you could take more responsibility, take the pressure he puts on his own shoulders from him, but this pregnancy is less easy than the first and you hate that you can’t do it all anymore. You take solace in the fact that Steve is asleep, not awake worrying or nesting.
Turning in his sleepy hold, you place his hand back on the bump to keep the littlest Harrington settled and content, and watch your handsome husband look like the teenager you wish you had known. You map the laughter lines instead of the ones etched by worry, counting the happy memories (which are insurmountable) as you fall back to sleep with him at last.
Sleeping Beauty herself slumbers on until almost 8 a.m., meaning that both you and Steve sleep until almost 8 a.m. too - later on you will toast coffee (decaf for you) over that parent win. For the next few months, the weekends mean Steve will be hitting snooze on his body clock when the chances arise.
This morning Beth’s little voice sings his name down the hall. Steve wakes with a smile and kisses your sleepy face as you stretch and peel your eyes open.
“You’re up, Coach.” Your voice is a tired yawn, mumbled into the fluffy duvet Steve untangles himself from.
“Bring her in for cuddles please.” You pout for a tired kiss and hum happily when he grants your wish.
Steve’s ankles crack as he walks from your room to Beth’s. She’s wide awake and wild-haired, matching her Dad, and she sits up in her bed with her bunny-teddy clutched in her fist.
“Hi bumblebee,” he gasps, his tiredness swept away by his genuine joy to see her. Steve lays down on her too-small-for-him baby bed and pretends to get comfy to sleep again. “Sleepover?” he asks, opening his arm for her.
“Nooooo, yo’bed!” Her sweet voice crackles with sleepiness and the remnants of a cold she picked up as the seasons changed.
In the warmth of your bed, you can hear the mini-eye-roll she’s giving her Dad as he plays up to her dramatics. Uncle Dustin has a lot to answer for.
“Bethie,” you call from your nest, “I miss you.”
Steve watches with barely restrained amusement as her face beams bright like sunshine before leaving him in the lurch to seek out Mama. “Hey! What about me?!”
You can hear his grumbling as he hauls himself up from the tiny toddler bed but your focus is the bundle of sunshine that bounds her way to your room in her sky-blue jammies. Pushing messy hair from her face, she squeaks happily as you lift her before Steve can beat you to it. You didn’t want another moment apart from your girl and she burrows against your chest under the toasty-warm duvet.
“Morning Betty Boop.” You press kisses to her smiling face and hear Steve stomp and flop back into the room and into the bed.
“Is Daddy not invited to this love-in? Just for Mama and Beth?” he asks, scowling at your smushed-together faces.
You cuddle Beth and stroke her back as the girl shifts her impish gaze to Steve. “What do you think, Betty? Kisses for Dada?”
She can never ever resist him and reach-grabs out to be gathered in his big strong arms for kisses and cuddles.
Steve lights up, features relaxing from his feigned annoyance, as he gives and receives morning kisses. You are gathered up alongside the titch of a girl and with her help, you smother kisses all over Steve’s happy face.
“Never ever not invited to the love-in, my love.” You kiss his shadowed jaw once and tuck yourself under his arm.
“Kiss d’baby?” Beth’s messy head pops up and looks at you hopefully.
“You wanna say good morning to Baby?” Steve asks, and she nods. “Mama?”
“I think she’s asleep, but I bet she’ll wake up when she hears Big Sis and Dada.” Beneath the pitched tent of the duvet, you lift Steve’s t-shirt and present the rounded bump for inclusion in the morning love-in.
Beth has been immensely eager to meet her baby since she took notice of your bump and realised the new baby was actually in there.
The little girl’s pillow-soft cheek rests against the curve as she hugs around your middle. “Moh’nin, baby.” Her little voice is still a little stuffed up, nasal.
Your heart and tears swell as you watch her with Steve, who kisses the bump and murmurs hello. You’re at that point of pregnancy where you could cry when the wind changes and you cover your eyes so Beth won’t go out in sympathy-tears with you.
Steve’s big hand squeezes your hand as he distracts Beth, who babbles in toddler talk to her sibling. His eyes are wide and worried as he looks up and sees the hitch of your chest. He’s had that worried look since you bled at ten weeks and the doctor put you on bed rest, just three weeks into actually knowing you were pregnant. Everything has settled bar your hormones and emotions; two perfect heartbeats, an active healthy baby, a happy but tired Mom. Steve is more scared now than he was with Beth but pretends to be brave for you.
You swipe at your hot tears, dry your hand in your t-shirt before reaching down to stroke through Steve’s thick hair.
“M’okay.” You give him a watery smile. “She’s just… so sweet, Stevie.”
Moving up to lie along your side, Steve wipes your cheek and presses a kiss to the trail of the tears left behind. “Sweetest. Sweet Bee. Feelin’ okay?”
His hand stays on top of your bump and then passes over Bethany’s bedhead when she looks up curiously.
Seeing that she is missing out, Beth decides she has had enough and wants to cuddle with you instead of the baby who won’t kick back hello. She wiggles up to lie on Steve’s chest, little fingers poking into the freckles and moles as he pulls the duvet back around you all like a cosy cocoon.
“Feeling good. You okay?”
Steve has tucked away his worry again, but you still see the pinch in his brow - though the curious little fingers might be the reason for that.
“Peachy.” He chases the poking fingers with a growling kiss, pulling a shrieking giggle from Beth. “Hello, can I help you? Why are we poking Daddy this morning, huh?”
You giggle with Beth and kiss where her fingers had pressed, modelling the gentle sweetness you know she possesses in multitudes. “Poor Daddy. See, Betty? Gentle kissies.” A kiss is snuck onto his mouth for good measure.
“Daddy,” Beth sing-songs, patting his cheek lovingly.
“Bethie,” Steve sings back to her, echoing her melody. He accepts a wet baby-kiss as you curl close to them both.
You twirl a finger in the messy wave of her hair. “What will we do today? Do you want to get some library books? Or we could… go to the park?”
Steve pats her back gently. “Oh wow. All the possibilities, huh?” His lips press to Beth’s forehead as she cuddles up to him, her fingers distracted by the gold chain he wears around his neck. “Gentle, please.” He kisses her head again and looks at you. “We can do both… Go get a t-r-e-a-t?”
You smile and nod, covering Steve’s hand on Beth’s small back. “I like t-r-e-a-ts. What do you want to do, big guy?”
Steve’s fingers slot with yours. His lips brush your head as you share his pillow - the firm one to help with his neck pain. “Just be with you two. Could stay right here all day and I’d be the happiest guy.”
You press your nose against his cheek and close your eyes; you’re both surrounded by your favourite people, it is utter bliss.
“I love you.” Your voice is soft and tired against his stubbly jaw.
“Love you. So much, babe.”
Steve tilts his head so you can share a morning-breath-be-damned kiss. He wishes he had woke up sooner, before the wide-eyed toddler, so that he could have showered you with kisses, made out like teenagers (despite the baby bump between you).
“No! Me!” The frustrated little whine makes you smile apologetically to each other, chancing one more peck before you both look to scowling Beth.
“Sorry, Bee. Mama’s too delicious for me to resist.”
“Steve!” you tuck your face in his neck as you laugh, an affectionate headbutt.
“What? The kid’s gotta know.”
The two-year-old smushes her face to her Dad’s chest, still too little to comprehend her Dad’s silly banter when she just wants to be the centre of both of your attention. You have a few months left to figure that out before the baby arrives, but it scares you that she might feel like she’s not the best thing that ever happened you (bar her Dad, of course).
Your pout matches hers and you push back the stinging Mom Guilt Tears. She is only coaxed away with sweet little cheek-kisses from you as you hum-sing Take a Chance on Me (accompanied by Steve’s tapping fingers on her back ‘take a chance, take a chance, take a, take a chance-chance.)
The girl's smile splits her frustrated face, a quiet giggle as she is serenaded by her current favourite song (you have just got I Was Made For Lovin’ You out of your head after Steve had introduced her to KISS in the car). Her little arm hooks around your head as you whisper how much you love her, soft voice tickling her ear and cheek.
Beth’s laughter coaxes a fluttering kick against your belly, which Steve feels against his side as you spoon against him. He wears the same wide-eyed joy on his face every time he has felt your babies kick.
“Oo, she’s awake again. Finally joining the party.” You rest your hand against the side of your rounded belly and telepathically tell the tiny one how much you love them too, how you can’t wait to meet them but please stay in there until they’re fully cooked and ready.
Steve’s free hand - the one not keeping Beth upright as she sits up on his torso - joins yours and echoes your telepathic communication to the littlest Harrington - I love you, I can’t wait to hold you, please stay safe in there and be nice to your Mom.
His wide palm on your bump settles the fluttering before she aims her kick right against it Hi Dad! Okay, Dad!
You share a secret little smile with him and kiss his cheek as his eyes shimmer before rolling onto your achy back, feeling the satisfaction of the pop and crack as your spine relaxes against the mattress. Steve’s hand stays on your belly, and you hug his arm to your chest, as Beth sings her toddler-babble version of an ABBA mashup for you both from her throne.
Steve’s face hurts from smiling as he listens to her, hears some semblance of the lyrics in Beth-speak. He doesn’t remember mornings like this with his parents, few and far between were the times he was even allowed to cuddle with them in bed on a weekend morning.
You glance at his face, watching shifting emotions come and go as he remembers, tries to forget and focuses on the memories being made right now in your cosy nest of a bed. You squeeze his arm and hold his hand on your belly - matching gold wedding rings clicking against each other as your fingers intertwine.
Steve squeezes your hand, three pulses. There is simply nowhere he would rather be.

kisses before dinner —the harrington family gets ready for a dinner party. mom!reader, 3k
"...and I told mommy she needed my help but your mom doesn't like listening to me anymore," Steve says, eyebrows pulled together, "because of that one time I told her the side of the refrigerator was supposed to feel warm and it broke. But I'm usually right."
Wren blinks at him dopily where she lies in the dip of his thighs. Steve has his knees up, back flat on the couch and head propped by a pink fluffy heart pillow from Bethie's bed to speak to her face to face.
"I promise you'll understand when you're older. I'm a genius." He strokes her little forehead. Steve's youngest daughter is too baby to look like anybody, but he's starting to think she looks like him anyway. "And now mom has to run the washing machine again when we were already super duper busy."
"Shut up!" you yell from the kitchen.
Bethie giggles from the same place, seemingly, raising her voice to join in, "Yeah, daddy! Shut up!"
"That's so not nice." Steve shakes his head at Wren in dramatic disbelief. She smiles at him. "Isn't that mean? Don't you think that's sick?"
"You're being a know-it-all again!" you continue. "And we'd be less busy if you were helping me!"
"I'm sick of helping," Steve says conversationally. "I help all day long."
Wren gurgles and lifts one of her hands toward him. Steve holds it in his, rubbing at her palm with a gentle thumb. She totally gets what he's saying, agrees with him no doubt, breathing out heavily as Steve gives her hand a wave up and down.
"Steve," you say, dropping the angry act to pull him in, "please, sweetheart, I really do need your help."
"How am I supposed to say no to that?" Steve whispers. "Does she guilt trip you that way?"
Wren doesn't giggle, but the breathy, happy sound she makes as he crunches forward to kiss her forehead is close enough to make Steve laugh himself. He moves her carefully into the curve of his arm and stands, wishing he could stretch, exhausted by another long week but undeniably happy. "Let's go see what they want," he murmurs to Wren.
You and Bethie are in the kitchen by the stove. She's wearing oven mitts too big for her, and you're crouched behind her offering steady instructions. "Don't touch the sides, my love. Only the baking tray. If it feels warm and you're not happy, tell me, and I'll take it straight away." You wear your own oven gloves.
"I can do it," Beth insists, squaring her features.
Beth takes the baking tray and its cookies into her hands, walking with short steps to the counter, where she slides the tray up high. You lean over her to make sure it's settled before closing the oven and dashing a kiss into her cheek. "Well done, gorgeous girl," you say, scratching lightly at her shoulder as she preens under the praise. "One day you'll be making cookies all by yourself."
"But not for a while?" she asks, startled.
You kiss her again. "Not for a long, long time."
"Did you need my help or my approval?" Steve asks, his hand making a small thump with each pat he taps into Wren's back. "A taste tester, right?"
"I need you to find your other daughters. I have no idea where they are," you say with a rueful smile.
"Okay." Steve has carried babies. He's carried them for years, tiny ones and ones too big to need it, carried nonetheless. But something about Wren in all her newness makes him nervous. He hates carrying her up and down the stairs, too aware of the times he's missed a step or tripped up. "Can you take her?"
"Yes!" Bethie says, running to her unofficial chair at the dining table and holding out her mitted arms as she sits.
You nod at him and take the seat next to her. Steve hands Wren over into her sister's waiting hold, more than confident you're still there to take over if things get overwhelming. Wren looks comically large in Bethie's lap.
"I have her, dad." Beth leans down to touch her nose to Wren's. "Hi, Wren. Hello, hello," she says softly.
Steve gives your cheek a swift but loving stroke and leaves in search of the other kids. He can hear Dove in her room talking to herself in make believe, but Avery, the oldest, isn't with her, nor is she in her bedroom. Steve knocks on the bathroom door.
"Are you in there, Ave?"
No answer. Steve raises his voice. "I'm coming in."
He peeks inside slowly but she's not there. Eyebrows raised, Steve asks, "Avery, where are you?" Nothing. "Avery Harrington, don't make me worry! Please."
He lets his head drift to one side, listening for an answer. Avery rarely gets told off and she hates it; she'd jump to tell him where she was if she were up here.
Or so he thinks. Just as he's taking the stairs again to look for her someplace he must have missed, he hears sniffling coming from the master bedroom.
Idiot, he thinks, relief taking tight hold. He doesn't like not knowing where the girls are. He should've checked your room to begin with.
"Ave?" he says, opening his bedroom door. "You in here?"
"I'm here, dad," she says, peering up from the space between the top of the bed and his nightstand, kneeling on the carpeted floor.
"What are you doing down there? We gotta get ready for Aunt Robin's party."
Her cheeks shine in the slice of light from the open door. Steve closes it behind him and flicks on the big light, rounding the end of the bed to help her up. He hooks his hands under her arms and pulls her into his chest, bed springs creaking as their joined weight lands.
"Why are you crying?" he asks, cuddling her to his front. "What's wrong? Why didn't you come and find me? You can't stay here crying all by yourself, that's not cool. How am I supposed to make it better if I don't know what's wrong?"
"Dove bit me."
Steve gasps. "Again?"
"On my hand, dad." She holds up her wrist. "It hurts."
He presses his cheek to the top of her head, taking her arm tenderly to analyse the bite. It's a nasty thing, not bleeding but cruel and stark. "I'm sorry," he says.
"You said I can't be mean–"
"No, you can't–"
"But it was really mean."
"I know," he murmurs, "but I just don't… we can't be mean to Dove when she bites because she doesn't know it's wrong, okay? She doesn't remember. She knows it's the wrong thing to do, but by the time I tell her she doesn't know what she did." What Steve means is that the first time Dove bit Avery, Avery reacted on impulse and slapped her sister in the stomach. There isn't a bridge yet to connect to Dove why she might have received such a thing (though Steve teaches all the girls that hitting is never okay no matter what), so Dove just thought she was being hit. It was a very tense half hour of tears.
Steve rubs Avery's back as she starts to cry in earnest. "I will tell her not to bite you, honey. I swear, I won't let her be mean to you. I'll tell her until she understands."
He's been trying to teach Dove not to bite, but saying 'no' doesn't seem to do anything. Positive incentives don't last, and taking her toys wouldn't make much sense, because again, she doesn't get it.
"You know," Steve says, wiping her cheeks tenderly, "I'll tell her again and again and again until she stops, and it'll work, because it worked with you."
"What?"
"You used to bite me sometimes, but you used to bite mom all the time."
Avery looks at him in horror. "I did?"
He puts her down onto her feet and takes her hand. He'd like to tell her this story while sitting down, but Robin's house beckons and time is running short. "Mom would come home from work and you'd be very happy to see her, but she would ask you what you did today and where we went and you'd bite her."
He peeks into Dove's room and finds her missing. Downstairs, you say, "No! No, no, babe!" and he assumes she's been found.
"Why would I do that?"
Steve holds her hand buoyed between them as he descends the stairs. "We decided it was because you missed her. When your Dove's age you don't know how to say that. You don't even know what that is. I'm a thousand years old and I don't even know what I'm feeling half the time. So mom stopped hugging you after work for a bit until you calmed down."
"But I don't go to work, dad. Why did Dove bite me?"
"What were you doing?"
"We were playing with Mr Scruffles and the care bears and she just bit me for no reason!"
Steve stops at the bottom of the stairs. "Were you being a bossy boots?"
Avery glares at him. "I just told her to stop taking Funshine bear."
"Well," Steve says, smiling at her in apology, "maybe, next time, you can come and tell me, and then I'll tell her to stop taking Funshine bear, and then when she wants to bite someone she bites me instead of you. That could work, yeah?" He would much prefer it.
Steve takes Avery to the kitchen, where you've transferred Wren into her bassinet while Bethie eats a cookie, her cheeks messy with chocolate, and Dove languishes in your arms, small hands touching your hair curiously.
"Dove, will you look at this?" he asks, showing her Avery's bite mark. "You see that, honey? That's what you did when you bit your sister. We don't bite."
You gasp. "No!" you say, stern but far from cruel. "We don't bite. We only bite when we want to eat something."
Dove frowns.
"When you bite," Steve says, trying to appeal to her smarts. It'll stick eventually. "You give Avery an owie. That's why we can't bite, okay?"
Dove can tell she's being chided even if she doesn't totally get why. "No," she says unhappily.
"Can you say sorry to Avery?" you ask, reassuring her with a gentle squeeze. "Say, I'm sorry, Avery."
"Sorry, Ave'y," she mumbles.
Avery can't glare for long. She doesn't hold a grudge, not like her dad. "It's okay. You didn't mean to."
You beam at Avery like she's hung the moon. "You're so nice, my big girl. Can I have a look at your wrist? Did that hurt?"
Her mother's concern draws fresh tears. You swap children, and Dove quickly forgets what happened as Avery cries in little sniffles on the countertop. Steve brims with a familiar brand of pride as you comfort her, kissing and offering treats to help her feel better. I picked the right one might be applicable, only Steve didn't choose you so much as he happened upon you one day like a miracle, and then begged to keep you. Luckily for him, you've always been very agreeable on that front.
(As in, you love him more than can be said in any one language.)
"What are you upto?" Steve asks Bethie.
She shows him her food-covered hands. He nods like this is awesome, but in reality chocolate stains her t-shirt and she's going to have to change before they leave. Dove rams herself against his leg and looks up with her eyes widened.
"What?" he asks.
"Um…"
"What do you want?" he asks, softer. She starts to frown again. Steve bends. "Drink? Crackers?" No dice. "What about some pear slices?"
Dove loves pears more than anything, the sticky, sugary sliced kind from the can. Her frown disappears and she walks off, thankful to be understood. Steve's just grateful he wasn't bitten.
"What else did you need?" Steve asks, winding around you where you're cleaning Avery's cheeks. A damp washcloth drips down your arm.
"More time. Have any?"
"Wren's bag is done, bottles done, Bethie's dinner." He whispers the last part. Bethie is a picky eater and she grows pickier with time, and Robin knows this, but she's not a parent (as sweet and caring as she might be for the girls). Only something you or Steve have made is something Bethie will deign to eat, and she's insecure about it despite having no reason to be. "Beth needs a new top. Your blouse needs to go in the dryer, and I can't find my nice pants. Avery?"
"I don't need anything."
"You sure? You have Mr Scruffles?"
She wraps her arms around your neck. "Just want a hug."
"Then I guess I'm busy while daddy does all my chores," you tease Steve lightly, your touch similarly soft where it tracks up and down Avery's arm. "I'm sorry Dove bit you again. It's not fair. Not fair at all. Maybe we should only have you playing downstairs until me and dad figure it out, okay? I don't want her to keep taking bits of you."
Steve clears the checklist. Not to brag or anything, but he's a pro. You both are. Life is hectic as always and you knew getting out the door would be a process, so you planned accordingly, and you arrive at Robin's with time to spare, though Dove smells strongly of sugary pears and Bethie's new shirt has fingerprints on the back.
"Hi, crew!" Robin greets. "It's my favourite Harringtons!"
"We're your only Harringtons."
"That's not true, I went to college with a Harrington." Robin ushers the girls inside. They want one thing and one thing alone —hugs. Dove is the most insistent, dropping your hand to offer Robin her arms. She picks the small girl up and smiles at her with a monumental amount of love. Robin doesn't have favourites but Dove demands it, sometimes. Avery says, "Hello, Aunt Robin," and hugs her stomach, while Bethie puts her arm behind Avery and hugs them both.
Steve's arm shakes. "Any chance I can get through? This is a really heavy baby."
"Hi," Robin says, ignoring him without guilt. "You guys are the best part about having a best friend."
Steve logs that one for later revenge and eases around the mass of bodies to take Wren into the living room. "Holy fuck," he says, "I thought you weren't coming?"
Eddie rolls his eyes. "I wanted to see the girls. It has nothing to do with you."
They hug and pat each other on the back, and then Eddie drops to his knees in front of Wren's car seat to smile at her. "I love her so much. Can I have this one? Y'already have so many."
"No you absolutely cannot. Where's Dustin?"
"They're all in the backyard. Mora's teaching them how to make grass flutes, or something."
"How'd you get out of that?"
Eddie shrugs. "She doesn't like me. Doesn't make any sense, goth and metal are like brothers."
"Is she goth? I thought we settled on hippie who wears dark clothing."
"You guys are such losers!" Robin says, like a tree adorned in girl-shaped ornaments. "Don't bitch about Mora."
"Don't swear in front of my kids!"
You, having taken off your shoes and coat, unlike Steve, shimmy around the table. "He said 'fucking bitch' in front of Bethie the other day," you gossip, sitting by your friend's side. Eddie gives you a quick hug. You're undoubtedly his favourite Harrington.
"He's a disgusting man who shouldn't have kids."
You gasp and elbow him. "How dare you."
"Can we go play with Stinky?" Avery asks Robin.
Robin puts Dove down, short hair flying every which way, "If you can find him. But be nice, okay? He's agitated today. Mora says it's something about the supermoon."
Avery laughs and Dove races to follow her sister up the stairs. "Ave, remember what I said, okay?" Steve calls after her. "Come and tell me if she's being bad! And no going in the bathroom!"
Bethie remains, oddly. Though it's obvious why she's stayed the longer she lingers, her gaze flickering between you and Eddie.
He holds his arms out. "Hello, Beth. You want a bro hug?"
Bethie laughs and meanders into his waiting arms, where he pat-pat-pats her back like he did to Steve, eliciting a wave of happy giggles. "You've gotten so big again!" Eddie says, moving her away kindly. "Woah!"
"I'm glad people have stopped saying that to me," you joke.
Steve's delighted, laughing loud and sudden, and you're always pleased to have made him laugh, practically collapsing in his direction. He pulls at you until you're arm's reach.
"What does that mean, Eddie?" Bethie whispers.
Eddie pulls her into his lap. "It means your mom is happy about baby Wren being born."
"I'm really happy too."
"I bet you are! Your dad told me you're like his little helper, is that true?"
Steve turns into your cheek. A quick stolen moment before he kisses under your ear and pulls away. "Wow," he says, smiling at you, "could we, like, actually have a conversation right now? A full one?"
You beam. "What do you wanna talk about?"
Steve could happily talk about everything and nothing with you. Before bed you guys are usually tired but excited enough to be alone together that you'll talk about the colour of the new dish soap or Avery's broken pinky nail. "Seen any good movies lately?"
You give him the look. He practically invented it, that sticky, gooey eyed love as you murmur, "Mm, no. Don't think so. How about you?"
He leans in for a kiss.
"Yikes," Eddie says, covering a giggling Bethie's eyes with his hands. "Robin, house rules, please!"
Steve drops his arms heavily over your shoulders for a warm hug. "He's just jealous," he whispers.

Idk if you do dad fics but imagine steve finds a baby after the "hurricane/earthquake"
hi love! i definitely LOVE doing dad fics - i get super excited when people request them (pls request more, i beg of all of you)!! also very sorry for the long wait! i hope i do this justice w; s4 canon (besides death - except the canon ones such as chrissy, jason, fred, and jason’s friend!), dad!steve & mom!reader, one use of y/n - it was needed. i’m sorry 😭
when the ground shakes under steve’s feet, he’s thinking of you and his little girl, phoebe.
the ground crumbles and his heart is suddenly in his throat, a panicked look being shared with robin. when everything suddenly feels calm again, he’s quick on his feet.
he notices dustin on his knees, screaming for steve. he’s quick on his feet, noticing eddie. his face is dull of any color and he’s trying to widen his eyes, but can’t. steve bends and helps dustin up, before wrapping eddie’s arm around his shoulders.
everything is underwater and he feels antsy to get back to the cabin he had left you at. eddie groans, his head falling over and curls brush against steve’s neck.
“go!” he looks at robin and nancy, chin nudging towards the trailer. they have no room to say anything, quick on their feet as the make their way inside.
dustin helps steve the best he can with an injured ankle, walking inside.
it’s difficult, especially with eddie’s limp weight, but they finally make it over and towards the RV they had stole. nancy makes quick work on trying to patch up eddie the best she could.
steve drives like a madman.
robin and dustin feel sick.
nancy is doing her best to keep eddie on the bench.
he almost flies into nancy when steve presses on the breaks, a low groan escapes his throat when he shifts on the bites on his side. nancy apologizes for steve’s driving.
steve’s quick to slide out of the car, circling around towards the creel house. he pauses as he stares at the door being opened quickly.
max doesn’t look to well, a broken arm being cradle in lucas’ palm as she leans over into him, trusting that he will lead her the right way.
“she needs to get to the hospital, steve. now.”
he’s nodding quickly, walking up the steps quickly and helping lucas lead her towards the RV. he can hear her sniffle, but she tries to hold it in because she doesn’t cry.
he’s slamming the drivers door as he peeks back. “hold on.” is all he says before the tires squeal on the road and everyone jerks forward with the movement.
he’s impatient and robin notices. her hand pats at dustin’s arm and she slips out of the booth and makes her way towards the front, slipping into the passenger seat.
“steve,” his hands grip the wheel and she notices and continues, knowing he’s listening. “i know… you’re nervous. but i’m sure they’re fine.”
“you don’t know that.”
“i believe it, though. they’ll be fine. y/n is smart enough to know what to do.”
his eyes glance over and she lifts her brows at him. he looks back at the road before giving a short nod. he makes a quick turn into the hospital parking lot, stopping right in front of the doors.
he stands from his seat, walking in back. “help lucas with max,” he looks at nancy. “i’ll help carry eddie.”
“they’ll let him die. they still think he killed them.”
“they won’t,” he shakes his head. “i’ll make sure of it.”
she looks unsure, pursing her lips together but nods as she stands. she helps max up, hands wrapping around her waist. robin is already inside, letting the nurse know there is a group outside who needs help.
steve and eddie is last to make it inside the hospital and the nurse looks as if she has seen a ghost - the color from her face draining. she’s quick to reach for the phone.
steve’s quicker, placing his hand on hers and shaking his head when she stares at him. “i wouldn’t do that if i were you,” he says. “if you don’t help him, you’re just as bad.”
she frowns, looking over at eddie who’s eyes had finally closed. he was breathing, but barely, shallow breaths that he was struggling for. her eyes then shoot back towards steve.
“he didn’t do it. i know for a fact he didn’t kill those people. you can believe what you want, but you need to help him.”
she still looks uncertain, but she makes her way around the counter, pulling up a wheelchair. steve places eddie into the chair.
he goes to move away but eddie’s hand shoots out and grips steve’s wrist.
he opens his eyes enough to look up at him, giving him a small, weak smile. “thanks.”
steve gives him a small smile, nodding a bit. the nurse rolls eddie away and steve watches quietly. he’s suddenly aware of some of the lights that flicker in the hallway and the red emergency lights that light the hallway further down the cold hospital.
he flinches when he feels a hand squeeze at his bicep. he looks down at nancy who gives him a small smile. “go.”
“i…” he’s conflicted. he wants to, to make sure his girls are alright. but the rest of his family needs him as well.
“we’ll be okay. i promise. we’ll call if anything happens. you need to go check on them.”
steve doesn’t need to be told again. nodding, he makes his leave, the doors sliding open automatically. he almost forgot that he parked right near the door, but he’s grateful he did.
he circles around and slips inside, going into drive, his hands are gripping the wheel as he peels out of the parking lot.
it takes twenty minutes to get to the cabin. he’s quick to park and slip out of the RV, the drivers side door still opened as his feet carried him towards the rickety porch, knocking on the door in a rhythmic manner.
the door unlocks and slowly opens. he lets out a breath when he sees you, arms wrapping around your neck as he pulls you close.
you let out a sob, shaky arms wrapping around his sides. “i was so scared that you got hurt… phoebe wouldn’t stop screaming for you.”
his heart breaks and he pulls away, wiping away the tears that continue to fall. “i’m sorry… im so sorry,” he presses a quick kiss to your bitten lips, before pressing his forehead against yours. “i’m sorry… where’s phoebe?” he whispers.
“under the blanket on the couch.” you pull away from his forehead to look over your shoulder. he nods and steps in, pressing a kiss to your temple before walking past you and sitting on the couch.
“phoebe?” his hand lands on her small ankle, and he feels his heart break more when he feels her tiny body shaking and her leg pulls away quickly. “it’s daddy, honey. come here.”
she peeks out of the blanket, watery eyes blinking. “daddy?” he nods, blinking through the tears and holding out his arms. she immediately crawls out from the blanket and towards him, wrapping her tiny hands around the fabric of his shirt the best she could.
he rocks her side to side as she sobs into his chest, a hand on the back of her messy curls. he peeks over at you, holding his arm out. you don’t think about it when you walk over, sitting next to him and laying your head on his shoulder and rubbing at phoebe’s temple.
his lips press to the top of her head, rubbing her back softly. “it’s okay… it’s okay, you’re both safe now…” he lets out a quivering breath as his eyes slowly close.
“we’re safe.”

full 'when i kissed the teacher' masterlist.
Tumblr media
With Steve having to take on a weekend shift at Target, you tackled the weekly Sunday grocery store trip with Alena. Before leaving that morning, Steve gave you an overflowing list of groceries, more than he definitely needed.
“Why does your dad put so much on the list, baby? Like, watermelon. When has your dad ever eaten watermelon?” You were holding onto Alena’s small, soft hand, guiding her with you as you pushed the shopping cart with your left, slowly filling it up with each aisle you pass.
“I like watermelon!” she beams with a smile, you laughing as you reply, “But, not a whole watermelon! If you ate an entire watermelon, your belly would be this big.” You demonstrated by holding your hand out far away from her stomach, her gasping and going, “I would not be that big!”
Tsking with a squint of your eyes, you reply, “Oh, but I think you would, sweetpea! You would have a massive watermelon belly! Big ‘ol belly.”
The conversation with the eight-year-old slowly drifted away as you arrived at the cake aisle. She lets go of your hand, running over and jumping up and down, pointing up and shouting, “Look! A Smurfs cake! A Smurfs cake!”
You look down at her and raise your eyebrows, smirking, “So, instead of a watermelon belly, you want a cake belly?”
“Cake belly sounds better! Can I have the Smurfs cake mubba?”
You delicately lift the box, Papa Smurf stood proudly next to his daughter Smurfette, two huts perched in the background, other Smurfs going about their daily activities presented in different-coloured icings. Turning the box over, it read: ‘A jam and cream sponge, completed with edible icing for decoration.’
“I think…” you stroke your chin, “If we buy this cake, you have to be a good girl to your dad for the rest of the week, okay?”
“And to you! I’ll be a good girl for you too!”
You chuckle, ruffling her hair, “And for me, obviously,” playfully rolling your eyes and placing the cake into the cart, “Smurfs cake it is!”
“Yes!” Alena cheeses, gripping her fist tight and pulling them towards her chest in celebration.
The two of you continue walking down the aisles, having to make a pit-stop for longer than expected at the bread section. Steve had written down ‘loaf of bread’ on the list, but the endless piles of different brands, sizes and types left you in slight confusion. You had recognised that the Harringtons liked their white bread, an easy ignorance to the brown loaves. However, the size of the loaf was something you were unsure on. Since there were only two of them, perhaps three if you stayed overnight and needed a slice of toast for breakfast, you agreed with yourself on the smaller loaf. It was no worry if he indeed did usually buy the bigger loaf, you could always make a stop on your way home from work and pass it over to them.
“All right, Pepperidge Farm’s Hearty White Bread is what we’re going for! Does that sound all right with you Ale—” But, as you look down, the little girl is nowhere to be found. You peer down the aisle, a flowery, yellow dress and brunette pigtails out of sight. Your internal panic begins to rise, deciding to quick power back to the aisle you just visited, wondering if she waltzed back to the chocolate section.
But, you don’t see her. “Shit,” you mumble to yourself, deciding your next safest bet was two aisles down, the one after the bread aisle. “Steve’s gonna fucking kill me,” you curse lowly, scared to death that you had lost his daughter. However, before you can make a turn to the right, the end of your cart collides directly into an older woman, her wearing a simple, long black dress, glasses neatly sat on the bridge of her nose.
“I am so sorry—” you begin to profusely apologise, however, the sight of Alena held tightly on her hip makes you let out a lengthy sigh. Thank God she was safe.
But, the word that comes out of her mouth shocks you to your core. “Mommy!”
Mommy. She called you mommy.
“Don’t apologise my dear, it’s okay!” the old woman calms your presence, “I’m assuming this one is yours. Poor baby was scared to death. Said she went around the corner and when she came back, you were gone.”
It’s then that you notice the tears rolling down her face, lips quivering and her holding her arms out, as if she wanted you to grab her. And that was the moment you knew: you were her mom.
The old woman lifts Alena up, you gripping her to your side as you cradle her head, her tears falling onto your bare shoulder. “It’s okay. Mommy’s got you. Mommy’s got you, baby.”
As you look up, the woman is smiling at the pair of you as she says, “Don’t beat yourself up over it. It was a simple mistake, you seem like a wonderful mother.”
You nod, mouthing a small “Thank you” as she bids farewell, attending back to her own grocery shopping around the corner. You cup the back of Alena’s head, stroking her hair as she stares at you with her beautiful, hazel orbs, just like her dad’s. God, they looked so much alike.
“Mommy,” she whispers out, almost as if she said nothing. You smile, letting a few tears fall yourself as you murmur back at the same volume, “Yeah, I’m your mommy, baby.”
And that’s when the waterworks burst for her. Even though she has no recollection or memories of her biological mom, you could tell it still had some heartbreaking effect on her subconsciously. It was a trauma she had no idea existed. You were the first ever figure in her life that resembled a mother, that cared for her like a mother, that supported her like a mother. So, that’s what you were. No, step-mom, no adoptive mom, just mom.
And even though she was eight years old, you cradled her in your arms as if you were caring for a newborn whose emotions were simply too big for their small body. You press a tender kiss to the side of her head, wiping the tears away from her face, making sure the salty liquid doesn’t fall into her mouth, infecting her taste buds.
She whimpers out, “I-I love you, mommy.”
You didn’t realise until that moment what an emotional impact those four words would hold on you. You’ve always wanted to be a mom, ever since you were a little girl. You think that maternal instinct you seemed to have inherited lead you to wanting to become a teacher in the first place. Something about raising kids to become healthy, human adults made you feel warm inside. But, no teaching position could ever come close to feeling the real thing.
“I love you too, baby girl,” you smile back, the pair of you wetly giggling, Alena using her small thumbs to wipe the tears that escaped from your eyes, collecting in a tiny puddle in the middle of your cheeks. “Want to stay on my hip?”
She nods in reply, “Yes, mommy.” God, you were gonna have to get used to that.
“Okay,” you quietly reply, the two of you continuing down the halls of the grocery store, filling the cart with the remaining items that Steve wished you collected for him.
But, what really was the absolute, top-notch tear-jerker was later that night when Steve returned home from his shift, Alena shouted to you from the living room, “Mommy! Daddy’s home!”
And to see the look on Steve’s face, the one that was of pure shock, made the tears fall all over again. You weren’t just looking after Steve’s daughter anymore, you were her mom, and that was the greatest gift you could’ve ever been given.

Check out my Masterlist for more from me!
You'd been abruptly ripped from a very peaceful sleep nearly 38 hours ago due to some particularly painful contractions. Your water finally broke 16 hours ago and you and Steve have been at the hospital since.
"How are you doing baby?" He asked, rubbing your arm gently. He tried to conceal his worried state, but you always knew how to read him. He closed his eyes and leant down to press a kiss to your cheek.
You smiled weakly at him. "I'm so exhausted, Stevie. I want her to come out, like ten hours ago." You mumbled reaching up and pecking his lips quickly. "I know you're tired too, baby. You could have slept." You tucked a few stray hairs behind his ears before he shook his head.
He grabbed your slightly clammy hand, skimming his thumb over the back. "Absolutely not. You are my priority right now. I won't let you do this alone." If only he knew the events that were taking place in the 20 minutes that followed.
"Baby's heart rate is dropped. We have to get her out, now." The doctor stated in a tone that made you sick to your stomach.
You were sure you would have thrown up had you been allowed to eat anything other than ice chips since this morning. You were stunned silent. A bystander in what was about to become yet another near death experience for you. Only this time, Steve was not allowed to be by your side for it.
"Sir, you have to stay in here. She's going to OR." That's the last thing you remember.
While you were under your baby was born via C section at 8:02 pm. She was placed on oxygen for five to ten minutes before she was deemed healthy enough to go to Steve.
You, however, had hemorrhaged due to the placenta separating from your uterus before it should have. You were still under and receiving blood transfusions while your daughter was wheeled into the room to Steve, who was pacing nervously by the window.
"Where is my wife? Is she okay?" He froze, chilled to the bone at not seeing you being wheeled in with the baby.
"She abrupted, Mr. Harrington. They're giving her blood now. She should be fine." The nurse assured him as he finally began stepping closer. "We like to do about an hour of skin to skin contact with baby and mom, but due to the circumstances… would you like to?" She added, motioning to the baby that was wrapped in the typical white hospital blanket with the blue and pink stripes.
"Yeah, absolutely." He nodded, eyes not leaving his child.
"I've got you a gown so you can cover. If you need anything hit that button and someone will be in to help you." The nurse offered him another reassuring smile before stepping out and leaving him with his daughter for the first time. While he cherished it, he hoped you would have be here for it.
He quickly exchanged his t shirt for the gown and gently unwrapped the baby from the blanket before laying her against his chest. He chuckled at her sudden jerks, not yet used to being handled, albeit careful and lovingly.
"Hi there. I'm your daddy. You were probably expecting mommy, I know. She should be back soon. I'm never going to let anything happen to you, princess. Your mommy and you, you're my everything, you know? You will never have to worry about anything as long as I'm here." He rubbed her back though the thin gown and blanket he had tucked her under as he cooed at her. He had only ever been this in love with another person one other time, and he'd married her.
Some time had passed when there was a knock on the door.
"Come in!" Steve called quietly, not wanting to disturb his sleeping child.
The door opened and the nurse that had brought the baby walked in. "Mr. Harrington, it's been about an hour and we usually try to get them to eat around this time after they're born. I'm not sure whether the plan was to breastfeed or not, but I brought a bottle for her. I can feed her if you need me to." The poor girl was trying so hard not to offend him, but she'd been around long enough to know that a lot of fathers left everything up to the mothers. She knew with you being in recovery that that wasn't an option.
Steve shook his head, but still sent her a smile, calming her nerves. "I've got it. Regardless of the plan she's got to eat." He said, reaching for the bottle that was being offered to him. "She's got to grow up to be a fighter just like her mommy, huh?" He smiled back down at the baby before repositioning her, which woke her up.
"Sometimes it takes them a little while to latch, so again, if you need some help, you know what button." She gave him a small nod, content with the scene she so rarely saw.
True to warning it took nearly half an hour to get her to actually latch onto the nipple of the bottle and feed.
"Look at you, baby. You're such a quick learner." He praised her gently as he watched the formula slowly disappear from the bottle. Once it was clear she wasn't going to take anymore, he turned her to rest against his chest again and patted her back gently, earning a few small burps. "Your Uncles Eddie and Dustin are going to be impressed with that, princess." He chuckled, enjoying every moment, but still worrying for you.
The nurse had come back over the next couple of hours, helping show him about diaper changes because while he had held, fed, and burped babies before, he always gave them back for diaper changes. He sat silently when they came and took her for her first bath, making sure all of the birth gunk was cleaned off of her.
When the door opened again, he expected it to see the nurse with the small bassinet. However he was greeted with the doctor.
"Mr. Harrington. Good news and bad news."
"Bad news first."
The doctor went on to explain in detail just what had happened during your labor and birth. "But, she responded well to the transfusions and her vitals are strong. She'll be back in here with you in the next hour or so, so that's the good news. You will have to take on a lot once you guys are discharged. She won't be able to do much of anything for the next several weeks, so make sure she's not overdoing it." He added, reaching out to pat Steve's shoulder.
"Absolutely not. She'll be taken care of." He stated with a nod. "Thank you for taking care of her in there." He added, truly meaning it. He didn't know what he would have done if you hadn't made it out. It's not even something he would want to think about.
Once his baby was brought back, he was also handed some paperwork to fill out for her birth certificate and other documents, leaving just the spaces for your signature.
"Wow." The nurse chuckled, looking over the papers. "Dads almost never know this much. You're going to be everything that little girl needs." She smiled, glancing into the bassinet.
"I certainly hope so. Her and her mom are all I need." He smiled, shifting around in the uncomfortable chair.
"Speaking of," The nurse smiled as a knock sounded on the door. "I think she's back."
Steve jumped up as the door opened, revealing you on the hospital bed, eyes closed but chest rising and falling. Signs of life.
"She's doing great. The anesthesia should be wearing off. If she stays asleep it's just because she's exhausted." The nurse that had been in charge of your care stated, positioning the bed back where it had been hours previous.
Steve nodded, eyes watering at your peaceful face. He can recount too many times he'd had this same feeling, looking at you. The first being in the Byers living room, nail bat in his hand. He'd just fought off the scariest thing he'd seen in his life up to that point. The most recent, previous to now, was when you and Dustin hauled Eddie out of the Upside Down, unable to tell where your blood ended and Eddie's began. There were plenty of times in between, but he'd rather not focus on that now.
Right now, he wanted to focus on you. On your healing. On your baby girl sleeping feet from you, and you completely yes blissfully unaware.
"Thank you." It was all he could muster, that and a curt nod, dismissing the two nurses.
He was finally at peace enough to stretch out on the uncomfortable couch in the corner and fall asleep for the first time in close to 48 hours. He woke up at every cry and whimper from the baby through the night. He didn't want your rest to be interrupted, especially with the outcome of the abruption. He fed her, cuddled her, and changed her all the while you slept.
You'd been out both medically induced and naturally for the past 12 hours. It was 8 am and Steve had just finished changing the baby when your eyes fluttered open. "Where's my baby?" You asked, looking around the room.
Steve smiled at you, pushing the bassinet over. "She's sleeping. You wanna hold her?" He asked, stopping where you could peer in to see her.
"Yeah, please." Your eyes filled with tears as you looked from her to him. "Can I have a kiss first? I thought I was going to die Steve."
The shake in your voice killed him. Devastated him. "I know baby, but you're okay." He walked around and leant down, pressing a long kiss to your lips. "I love you."
You smiled and nodded, then though tears slipped from your eyes. "I love you too."
He kissed you a couple more times. "Let me call the nurses in and tell them you're up. They're going to want to check you and that's going to be hard holding the baby. It'll be quick though, I promise."
You nodded and laced your fingers with his. "Okay, but, how is she?"
He pressed the call button and smiled. "She's perfect. She's got your nose." He tapped your nose, then your chin. "And this too. But I think she's got my eyes and lips." He grinned as the door opened.
Half an hour later, you finally had her in your arms. "She is perfect." You grinned, poking at some eggs that were brought to you as well.
"She looks just like you when she gets annoyed at me. Scared the crap out of me the first time." He chuckled, sitting next to you on the bed.
You couldn't help but laugh, then groan as your stomach muscles tightened. "Don't make me laugh, please." You whined, resting against him.
He kissed your shoulder, then the side of your head. "Considering I'm naturally funny, I don't know how you expect me to turn it off, but I'll try, for you." He sighed dramatically, causing you to give him a look. "See, that's the look I was talking about. I woke her up to feed her last night. She looked just like that." He smiled, leaning down to kiss the line that had creased between your eyebrows.
"You're lucky I love you so much." You giggled lightly, turning your face up to give him a kiss on the lips.
He smiled and nodded when you pulled back. "I consider myself the luckiest man on the planet, actually." He stated matter of factly.
