🍊 How well do they take care of themselves when they do become ill?
C: If school’s not in session? Cal is great at taking care of himself. He’ll stay well-hydrated, brew very involved tea blends to alleviate any specific symptoms he’s having, let himself rest as much as he can, and just kind of read and relax and generally listen to his body. If it’s during the school year, while he makes an effort to still do those first two things, the 'let himself rest' part is neglected by what he considers necessity. He takes every last one of his professorial responsibilities very seriously and feels the need to always be available to students. Have an excerpt on the subject because he is self-aware about it. This is from a phone call he has with Josephine.
“Are you taking care of yourself?”
“I’m trying to, but it’s the end of the semester there’s a lot I have to do, snff! I feel like I’m just counteracting everything I’m doing right for myself by overworking.”
“I’m sure you are.”
R: You know, Rafael has really never had to take care of himself, because his family does it for him—which he often wishes they didn’t—and Cal takes up the task when they get together.
On the rare occasions he can avoid the fussing folks in his life long enough to perform caretaking actions for himself, he’s… okay at it. Having been well taken care of, he has good examples of what he should be doing, so he’ll just leave out everything he considers unnecessary. The first thing to go would be:

R: Yeah the first thing Rafael would drop from the routine are all the Morales family remedies. He doesn’t believe they do all that much and they’ve been a source of annoyance for him. He much prefers the real deal and prays it’ll knock him the fuck out. I’m picturing him grumbling “¿Dónde está esa chingadera?” while he rummages impatiently through a drawer until he finds an open package of extra strength, off-brand cold medication that was at one time torn open so hastily and carelessly it looks like a wild animal got into it.
C: Cal doesn’t take Ayurvedic medicine too too seriously, but he does have a few dadi ke nuskhe (basically, ‘grandmothers remedies’) he swears by, primarily a tea blend he makes based off of kadha chai that involves the traditional ingredients (mulethi root, tulsi leaves and ginger—Cal has a whole little herbal apothecary in his pantry) but then he also adds licorice root to it because he steeps it for ridiculously long since he’s going for strength of effect rather than flavor, and licorice is super sweet and helps cut through some of the bitterness that tends to result when you steep tea for thirty to forty fucking minutes. (Enough honey to give him a bit of a sugar high helps in that respect too)
🕵️ What are the main signs that they aren’t feeling well?
R: For Rafael a cold pretty much always starts in his throat as a really annoying tickle, and he’ll start to feel like if he breathes too deeply it might trigger a dry cough. Outwardly he’ll begin to snuffle and clear his throat so hard it sounds as if he’s trying to forcibly vacuum his airways, which is basically the idea.
C: Cal has a pretty sensitive nose and it’ll start to feel especially susceptible and ticklish, and things that might not ordinarily bother him will suddenly become triggers. He gets sniffly really early on in the course of a cold—he gets a terribly runny nose every time. So the first signs of a cold he’ll notice are a runny nose/persistent sniffling, that increase in sensitivity, and also this:
“Oi,” Cal sniffles. “Think I might be coming down with something.”
“Because you sneezed twice?” Scotty asks.
He chuckles as he tends to his nose. “I can just tell. Plus those felt like ‘I’m getting sick’ sneezes.”
Scotty is both amused and incredulous. “You think there’s a difference in what sneezes feel like?”
“Oh there’s absolutely a difference.”
“So what’s an ‘I’m getting sick’ sneeze feel like?”
He ponders for a moment and then says, “Especially tingly.”
