Fire Bright (WIP)

A snippet from a Neverwinter Nights 2 fic I’ve been trying to write about my Fire Genasi rogue, Fajra Farlong, and her adventures as the Kalach-Cha.

The annual High Harvest Fair is a day of much fun, but the early morn hours are always the most hectic as that is when any last minute things are taken care of. Such as hauling casks out of the wine cellar, positioning the chests for the Knaves’ Challenge — so on and so forth. This year is no different. Fajra is typically dragged into this task as punishment, rarely does she volunteer — this year, it’s because of a poorly set arrow trap, intended for a group of beetles rumored to have been seen near the village but was instead set off by an unsuspecting Tarmas. In response, the man had yelled for hours until he went hoarse. She did try to warn him but did anyone ever listen to her? No. No they did not.

After a bucket of water to the face, the fire genasi dresses in a hurry and rushes downstairs. As she stuffed bread slathered with butter and sage into her mouth, she snaps her fingers and her hair alights briefly in an attempt to dry it ; the thick unruly vermillion curls becoming literal locks of flame. Daeghun, however, notices and promptly yet pointedly reminds her that their home is made almost entirely of wood. Without a word of protest, Fajra puts out her fire. She knows the real reason is that it makes him uneasy, but he would never admit such a thing. Not out of arrogance, but because he held his emotions tightly in check, so much so that he came off as emotionless. She's learned to read him (after twenty years of being in his care, she's had to) — his body language at least, and that he cannot hide no matter how he tries. The chink in the proverbial armor. The day he masters it, patches this failing, is the day that Daeghun becomes something completely unknown and unreadable. 

Fajra hopes that never happens.

Since I'm going to be on my Neverwinter Nights 2 Bull Shit, I just want everyone to know that Daeghun is one my favorite characters in this game. No one is allowed to be mean to him.

i'm pretty sure when Daeghun wished these little imps out of his house he didn't mean "get snatched by Mindflayers and become infected with the protagonist disease" but at least he can finally enjoy his retirement, right?..

also can we appreciate that: their mom was: an improbable child of a drow and a sun elf, the kalach-cha, the champion of the West Harbor Harvest Fare, the knight-captain of the Crossroad Keep, a member of Lord Nahser's Nine, a killer of the King of Shadows, a survivor of the Spirit Eater's curse, a druid who could speak in Wild Shape and had a telthor for an animal companion, as well as the one who helped restore the Circle of Merdelain their dad was: an improbable son of a Night Hag and a mortal man, a Dreamwalker of indescribable power, a natural performer of great talent, a guardian of all Rashemen's spirits, a seducer of many a farmer's wife and daughter, a slayer of the Coveya Kurg'annis, and he who looked upon the Wall of the Faithless and chose to deny gods still meanwhile the kids: hee hoo brain wormies go brr :)

magda's surname is. hmmmmm. vanderg(h)ast and not farlong. daeghun always made it clear she should use her mother's surname and not his and it used to hurt her feelings before she turned that part of her heart sideways to not feel it anymore

Personal Headcanons About Darion That I Can’t Really Fit Into the Story Yet Pt 1

His accent is fake as hell. Mostly he sounds like Georg or Brother Merring, but as I figure it, Merring and Tarmas came from Neverwinter and Georg most likely spent a great deal of time outside the Mere working as a mercenary or something to learn the skills he needed to train a wholeass militia. He probably picked up an accent out there on the road, yeah?

So we’ve got three authority figures who sound remarkably like the upper class folks we later run across in Neverwinter. Daeghun is weird from any angle, and I somehow doubt they actually conversed enough to share much in the way of accent. Retta Starling’s from Neverwinter, Bevil sounds like her because she actually TALKS TO HER SON LIKE A NORMAL PERSON DAEGHUN. Amie’s copying Tarmas out of respect/a desire to belong.

I’d bet you anything most of West Harbour sounds like Orlen. Orlen never left West Harbour - he’s a random peasant farmer, why the hell would he? Therefore his accent’s the most likely to be local. He’s not the weird exception, he’s the norm, we just don’t know it bc he’s the only one with a proper speaking part in the game prologue. And since Darion’s a bit older than Amie and Bevil, any kids he actually spoke to in his formative years wouldn’t have any reason to have a random Neverwinter accent. They’d sound like Orlen. Developmental accents are nigh impossible to shake - twenty years in my current country and I still sound as Aussie as the day I moved here.

This has been a long, circuitous way of getting to the point but here it finally is: no matter how hard he tries to sound like a Generic Neverwinter Citizen, when drunk, tired or mad enough to spit tacks Darion Farlong sounds like an extra in a spaghetti western. And given that almost all chapters I’ve written so far feature Darion having a Very Bad Day, he pretty much sounds like that all the time. :D

Daeghun Headcanon

Okay so I feel like Daeghun doesn’t get enough love, which is a shame because I feel like he’s such a complex character. Sadly there’s not enough of him in the game.

But, I feel like the way Daeghun feels about his shard (that he hid) ,is very similar to the way he feels about the KC. “I didn’t want to keep it close. But I couldn’t bear to cast it away.”

Daeghun is very distant to the KC, both emotionally and physically (he is often away on hunting trips),that much is clear.

I tend to headcanon that Daeghun often leaves the KC alone because it’s hard for him to be around them. They’re too much of a bitter reminder of death.

But at the same time, he keeps them in West Harbor ( before the events of the game) because sub-consciously he doesn’t want them leave him. They’re one of his only reminders of his late friend, and wife. He doesn’t realise this,obviously. He’s unconsciously selfish.

I could honestly talk about Daeghun for hours. And this post was abit too short and rambly for me to get everything out at once. Ill post a super in-detail post about Daeghun another time.
