Kansas is Building The Avengers

Last off-season, there was a lot of talk about Kansas being the best team after landing the best piece in the portal, Hunter Dickinson, and teaming him up with guys like Kevin McCullar, Dajuan Harris, and KJ Adams. Accounting Shortage

The accounting profession has been experiencing noticeable attrition for a couple of years now, with no expected end in sight. In the article cited below, Courtney Vien of Morning Brew takes a brief dive into some numbers that discuss this attrition and they're very interesting. For example, there has been a 40.6% increase in the number of companies reporting "material weaknesses" due to internal personal issues, from the first half of 2019 to the first half of 2023 (Vien, 2024). It's actually kind of crazy to see a spike like that over the course of four years...it begs the question, how can something so vital be fixed ?

Towards the latter end of the article, Vien includes a couple of steps that current CFO's believe can be used to reverse this trend. From offering better work incentives via benefits, more open dialogue between leadership and entry-level accountants and possibly automation of accounting practices (Vien, 2024). Although those steps sounds good, it doesn't seem very viable for college students or current young professionals to be interested in accounting going forward. The busy season for accountants can be incredibly challenging and taxing (literally), combined with long hours it's understandable to see why this career path is becoming more unattractive. I do see a way though (Paul Atreides line from Dune 2 right there).

What if, this might be a stretch, universities and institutions combined an accounting degree with data science undertones ? As prevalent as data science is becoming now, it would be extremely beneficial to pair it with accounting. Although inherently different in many facets, at the base of accounting is numbers and knowing how to appropriately track and bucket them for appropriate financial reporting. Data science alone can be used to help with financial analysis, forecasting and taking a peak into the future of where an org could be headed. Exploratory data analysis, statistical research and dashboarding could work extremely well with accounting, almost seamlessly.

Data science is a tedious subject to learn but as with anything, discipline and practice could be used to master the subject. Accounting is very similar to data science in that way.

Who knows, this could even be a new trend.

The Truth

Dajuan A. 

Jacobi is a scientist in the world in the year 2120 and by this time all plants and animals are extinct but he wonders how fruits, vegetables, meat etc. are being made. And why haven’t people had concerns about the food they’ve been putting in their body? So he tests and experiments on corpses. He gets the corpses and starts his tests, but as he starts his colleague Jay, comes in and says, "Umm, Jacobi what are you doing?”

Jacobi jumps up and his tools and the corpse falls on the ground as he says “Nothing, just wondering where I left my keys so I could pack up and leave,” nervously. 

Jay says, “Okay, just make sure you lock everything up.”

Jacobi says, “Okay, don’t let the door hit you on the way out,” with a kind of nervous laugh. Jacobi patiently washed the body and tools to make sure everything was clean just in case his results would not come back false. Jacobi discovered that the body that he discovered didn’t have a digestive system. So he starts to discover more and as he discovers more he gets more curious.

The smell of the corpse is indescribable. It smells like trash, an abandoned house, and a garbage truck. But to him it smells like victory, success and knowledge. The sound is like the music In the movie when they’re solving a mystery but still kind of quiet, courageous, and suspenseful. It makes him feel like he’s in a mystery movie. Everything In his sight seems very unreal, he sees a corpse, materials they do not even use in the doctor's office has a mind of its own, an empty amount of various spaces that only he is using right now. In the touch of the dead corpse, the platform he touches when he props the corpse in different positions makes the situation he’s in not real. But he still feels like he is outside but inside his gate. The light is the sun and the walls are the gate. As he pulls out the digestive system he feels something go pump pump, pump pump, like a heart, but it’s not a heart. It’s the intestines. Jacobi instantly drops the intestines and starts to freak out. At this moment Jacobi doesn’t know what to do. It's like he wants to figure it out, but doesn't at the same time, then that’s when all the nervousness and the pressure and tension starts to kick In at. 

Jacobi has never seen anything like this before, so he doesn’t want to let himself believe that this is actually happening, so he starts mumbling to himself words along the lines of, “No, no, no, no, no this can’t be happening. If this is really true everything I was ever told would be a lie!” Jacobi had mixed emotions; he started to feel sad then angry then calm then angry again. He then comes to a completely calm state. He finishes experimenting then suddenly realizes the rest of the digestive system is not there. As he cuts the stomach open, his other colleague, Sandra, walks in and again there he is again sitting in shock. His colleague walks up slowly to him and says, “Umm,  are you doing?” Sandra says. 

But Jacobi couldn’t find the right words to say. “It’s a very long story,” Jacobi says. 

“Very lon—” 

“Shhhh, Since you’re the only person that knows, I want to know if you could help me?” Jacobi says. 

“Not until you tell me what’s going on,” Sandra says.

Jacobi says “Okay. You’re not going to believe it, but the government could have possibly made the food we put In our bodies with chemicals in the food”.

Sandra says “What? No, that’s ridiculous.”

Jacobi says, “Not all we have to do is prove it.”

Sandra says, “Okay, I'm in.” 

Jacobi then led with the evidence that the rest of the digestive system wasn’t present. When Sandra found out at first she was a little shocked but then she came to the realization that It must be true after Jacobi told her all of the information.
