[Northern Africa] has been experiencing some of the most intense heat waves in recent years, but in many cases they’ve been under-reported due to misconceptions about Africans’ ability to withstand them.

“Africa is seen as a sunny and hot continent,” said Amadou Thierno Gaye, a research scientist and professor at Cheikh Anta Diop University in Dakar, the capital of Senegal. “People think we are used to heat, but we are having high temperatures for a longer duration. Nobody is used to this.”

North Africa, the Sahara desert and the Sahel, a semi-arid belt north of the Sudanian savanna, are some of the most vulnerable areas because they have larger land masses relative to the rest of the continent, meaning they tend to heat up faster. Scientists have attributed the unprecedented temperatures to a combination of human-induced climate change and the return of El Niño, a natural phenomenon that alters weather patterns. 

The Sahel, for instance, has been heating at a faster pace than the global average despite being hot already. Burkina Faso and Mali, both in West Africa’s Sahel, are among countries that are set to become almost uninhabitable by 2080, if the world continues on its current trajectory, a UK university study found. Its people are especially vulnerable due to shrinking resources, such as water, and poor amenities, and a dearth of trees and parks means there are few options for places to cool off.

[...] Elsewhere on the continent, the crisis is also being felt. In the Horn of Africa, at least 43,000 people died in Somalia alone last year as a result of the worst drought in four decades. A study found that global warming is changing rain patterns and bringing more heat to Somalia and some of its neighbors, for longer stretches of time. Further south, unusually destructive cyclones in 2019 claimed more than a thousand lives in Mozambique and Zimbabwe alone.

So I was scrolling and saw this image in an article about the European heat wave,

And was like, uh, are you missing something there, buddy? Like all that red in northern Africa? Because that's a lot of red.

And I was going to give them the benefit of doubt, since I don't know much about the climate in Northern Africa, aside from Morroco and Egypt, which seem like really hot places, so you know, maybe it's normal there?

But nope, that's not the case:

“People talk of climate change as if it’s a thing of the future,” said Gaye. “Climate change is already here and we see its implications in people, livelihoods, economies and even in cultures.”

While studies on heat impacts on health are limited in Africa, research published last year found that children younger than 5 years old are particularly vulnerable to the hotter weather as they are less able that adults to self-regulate their bodies’ temperatures. The authors estimated that heat-related child mortality was rising in sub-Saharan Africa due to climate change. Other researchers have named the elderly, pregnant women and people who work outdoors, as groups at risk of heat strokes or heat-related infectious diseases.

“If we continue business-as-usual, the heat is not just going to get worse, it will get much worse,” said Mouhamadou Bamba Sylla, research chair in climate change science at the African Institute for Mathematical Sciences in Kigali, the capital of Rwanda. “We are going to see more frequent, longer and more intense heat waves.”

Much of the continent, responsible for just 4% of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions generated from burning fossil fuels, is ill-prepared for a hotter world. Meanwhile, Group of 20 nations, with air conditioning and access to functioning healthcare facilities, account for 80% of the world’s emissions.

Hundreds of millions of Africans lack electricity to even power a fan. One in three people in Africa is affected by water scarcity, according to the World Health Organization, so hydration can’t be taken for granted. Even shade is harder to come by due to widespread deforestation and land degradation. And only 40% of people on the continent are covered by early warning systems for extreme weather.

“More funds have to be allocated to climate adaptation and they need to be made more easily accessible to the most vulnerable countries,” Sylla said.

The UN climate talks later this year aspire to come up with a plan for richer nations to pay for loss and damages. But they’ve collectively fallen short of their commitment to spend $100 billion each year on projects in developing nations to cut emissions and to help them adapt.

“That’s where the issue of climate justice comes in,” said Gaye. “It’s not just that people are uncomfortable, climate change is killing them.”

Honda se refuerza con todo: Skyler Howes llega al equipo oficial Honda HRC

Honda ha dado el golpe al mercado del Mundial de Rally Raid FIM W2RC y el Dakar 2024 hoy al confirmar al tercer clasificado del último Dakar 2023 como quinto piloto oficial de Honda HRC. Se trata del estadounidense Skyler Howes, que con 31 años viene haciendo ruido en el rally cross country desde su debut en el Dakar 2019.

“Correr para el Honda HRC es un momento destacado de mi vida y mi carrera. Aprendí a conducir una Honda XR75 cuando tenía 3 años y comencé mi carrera en los rallies con una CRF450X, por lo que mis raíces están profundas en Honda. Tener también el apoyo de Monster Energy es enorme para mí y estoy muy emocionado de ver lo que el equipo y yo podemos lograr juntos. Después de un podio en el Dakar mi objetivo sigue siendo el mismo, divertirme lo máximo posible y seguir alcanzando lo más alto del podio” declaró Howes, que además de la P3 de 2023 tiene un noveno lugar en 2020 y un quinto puesto en 2021.

El jefe de equipo Ruben Faria se mostró muy contento con la incorporación de Howes a Honda HRC: “Estamos muy contentos de darle la bienvenida a Skyler. Es un piloto joven, pero con bastante experiencia en los rallies: fue tercero en el último Dakar y ganó en Marruecos. Es bastante completo y rápido fuera de pista. Con él tendremos un súper equipo para el Dakar 24 y estoy seguro de que Skyler nos ayudará a estar en lo más alto de la clasificación”.

Por el momento, Honda contará con cinco riders en Marruecos y el Dakar, con Quintanilla, Cornejo, Brabec, Van Beveren y Howes en la alineación oficial.

The School of Mutants 1 (2021) is a photograph of the abandoned campus of the African Future University. The work forms part of a broader research project, L’École des Mutants, a collaborative art and research platform co-initiated by Kane and artist Stéphane Verlet-Bottéro in Dakar. The project revolves around the forgotten history of radical educational experiments in Senegal. The futuristic ruins of the University of the African Future, a pan-African academic utopia co-financed by many African states and Taiwan in the 1990s, stand abandoned in Sébikotane, a rural suburb of Dakar. Not far away are the remains of the colonial school William Ponty, where the first West and Central African independence fighters were trained. The resulting image is charged with the convergence of past, present and future possibilities, while the uncompleted campus stands as a monument to dreams deferred.

So are we never getting Miraculous World movies again? The triple crossover with Ladydragon Eagle and Ladybug was never talked about again. Awakening has been pushed into mid 2023. No talk about Rio, London, or Dakar.

I have no idea. I hope we get more Miraculous World movies/specials, I've enjoyed the two we've gotten.

Hopefully the delay is giving the Awakening movie time to get polished without putting people in too much of a time crunch. It's been in production for awhile now. I mean, we got a song released from the movie way back in 2019.

Atlantics is a fascinating mixture of social commentary about contemporary Senegal and a ghost story with touches of vampire lore. It centers on a love story: Ada (Mame Bineta Sane) loves Souleiman (Traore) but is being forced to marry the wealthy Omar (Babacar Sylla). Souleiman is a construction worker on a huge project: a towering building that looms improbably (and in fact digitally) over the low-rising city of Dakar. He and his co-workers are fighting for the back pay that is owed them, and when that is once again denied, they decide to set sail for Spain in search of better work. When they have been gone for a while, Ada reluctantly gives in to the pressure to marry Omar, and after the wedding shows her friends through her new home. The young women particularly admire the fancy white marriage bed, but while they're out of the room the bed catches fire. A young detective named Issa (Amadou Mbow) is called in to investigate the suspected case of arson, and because there have been rumors that Souleiman has returned to Dakar, he becomes the chief suspect and Ada is grilled by Issa on whether she has seen him. Meanwhile, several of Ada's friends come down with a mysterious illness -- as does Issa, who begins feeling its symptoms at sunset. When Western medicine fails, shamans and imams are called in to try to cure the young women, but the illness persists. This is the start of the film's striking shift into fantasy, with a romantic resolution that doesn't vitiate but rather reinforces writer-director Mati Diop's view of the post-colonial world.

Ele foi um dos que mais contribuiu com os títulos do WRC de Loeb , Mais os 9 titulos com a Citroen também são dele, alêm disso eles correrem 5 RALLY DAKAR juntos mas no fim de 2021,essa dupla foi desfeita porcausa que os chefes do Prodrive\Bahrein Raid Extreme não estavam muito contentes, nesse mesmo ano Daniel “pendura o capacete” e se aposenta como navegador em provas profissionais.

IVECO sale con todo a ganar el Dakar 2023 en camiones: Cuatro máquinas en dos equipos del Team de Rooy

La categoría Camiones será interesante tal vez por motivos distintos a los esperados. La guerra en Ucrania ha dejado excluída fuera de competencia a KAMAZ y MAZ, por lo que los grandes favoritos de los últimos años no estarán presentes en Arabia Saudita. Esto abre las puertas a otras escuderías y marcas, y tal vez la más laureada de ellas es IVECO. Además de algunas entradas privadas, el equipo oficial Team de Rooy irá con dos estructuras al Dakar 2023 y un total de cuatro camiones IVECO Powerstar de 1.000 HP.

El equipo de Rooy tiene nuevos auspiciadores y la primera estructura será llamada Eurol Team de Rooy IVECO, contando con el joven Mitchel van der Brink a bordo de la unidad 511, el récordman de la categoría al debutar con 16 años en 2019. Mitchel fue P10 en 2022. Además, por este equipo irá Martin van der Brink con la unidad 506, viniendo de un sexto puesto en 2022.

En tanto, la escudería Boss Machinery Team de Rooy IVECO estará formada por Janus van Kasteren Jr. a bordo de la unidad 502 intentando mejorar la quinta posición de 2022 y  Vick Versteijnen en la unidad 504 cuyo mejor resultado es la P24 de 2016 y registró un abandono en su última participación en 2021.

Otros candidatos que deberá vencer IVECO en este Dakar son el campeón del mundo de la categoría T5, Kees Koolen, Martin Macik, Pascal de Baar, Tomas Vratny y Ales Loprais.
