30-story apartment tower proposed at edge of The Crescent in Uptown Dallas
An iconic Uptown Dallas property may soon see a towering new addition.
Crescent Real Estate LLC has proposed building a 30-story apartment high-rise with roughly 215 units at the northern tip of The Crescent, according to public documents submitted to the Oak Lawn Committee for consideration during its April 2 meeting.

It appears the proposed Crescent Point Tower at Cedar Springs Road and Maple Avenue would take the place of a parking garage entrance, according to those documents.
It would be across the street from 23Springs, an ongoing office development that has attracted several big-name tenants.

Crescent Point Tower would be 415 feet tall. The developer is asking to surpass the currently allowed maximum of 285 feet.

This comes a day after multiple outlets reported Crescent Real Estate would add a second office building to its Crescent Fort Worth mixed-use development.

How to make Dallas architecture less boring
It’s time for Dallas to have an architecture school within city limits.
A few weeks ago, the Architectural League of New York announced the winners of its Emerging Voices award, the most prestigious prize in the Americas for young architects and a reliable predictor and career accelerant for the profession’s most intellectually ambitious practitioners.
No Dallas architect was on the list of winners, a fact that came as no surprise.
The last (and only) time an architect from Dallas won this prize was in 1994 — 30 years ago.
(The winner was Gary “Corky” Cunningham, and he has lived up to that billing.)

If your instinct is to shrug, to dismiss the result of an admittedly obscure professional award, let me suggest you reconsider.
The city’s inability to produce even an occasional winner of this competition is indicative of a broader civic failure to foster and support a creative architectural culture.
To look at the endless stretches of generic development — greige apartment block after greige apartment block — is to understand this reality.
Dallas is awash in corporate architecture firms, and many do exemplary work, but there are precious few independent practitioners pushing the city to think inventively about problems that extend far beyond aesthetics to issues of equity, resilience, walkability and overall quality of life.
There are various explanations for this state of affairs — a conservative culture that promotes conformity is a good place to start — but one significant factor is that within city limits, Dallas has no collegiate architecture school that would draw top-flight faculty. Consider that peer cities like Boston, Chicago, Houston, New York, Philadelphia and Los Angeles all have multiple architecture schools generating creative design and discussion within their borders.
One possible solution would be for Southern Methodist University to establish an independent program, either on its campus or downtown.
This would make an excellent complement to the school’s Lyle School of Engineering.

Through its Hunt Institute, the school already holds the core of an excellent architecture library in the James Pratt Collection, the books, manuscripts, papers and other documents of the noted Dallas architect and planner.

A new program would be an expensive project, but SMU has a strong local alumni network, including many in the real estate business, who might support such a project (and want to put their name on it).

A simpler, although not simple, potential solution would be for UT Arlington to move its College of Architecture Planning and Public Affairs — the only architecture school in North Texas — to a location in Dallas proper.
This would pose its own challenges, not least the potential opposition of other schools in the University of Texas system — notably, UT Austin and UT Dallas — that might see such a move as a threat to their interests.
But that is a political problem that can be overcome, and there is precedent for having a university graduate program in a satellite campus in Dallas; the Texas A&M University School of Dentistry, for instance, is based here.

The architecture school itself has occasionally run studios and other classes in Dallas.
There are other obstacles, among them that the school has a staff and student population who have made Arlington home.
But the student population turns over on a regular basis, and much of the staff already lives in Dallas, as I did when I was a member of the school’s faculty for nine years.
The upside of such a shift would be considerable, both for UTA and its architecture school.
Moving from Arlington, a city with no public transportation, would be a significant advantage for students, especially if a Dallas location could be developed along with or adjacent to affordable housing.
Moving the architecture program would have the ancillary benefit of freeing up its centrally located building on the school’s Arlington campus, which has struggled mightily to keep up with demand for classroom, housing and administrative space as its student population has skyrocketed to over 40,000.
Conversely, Dallas has a significant glut of office space, even as massive new construction is coming to the downtown core.
Converting that space into a new home would be an excellent job for a school of architecture.
Alternatively, the program could move to a purpose-built structure as part of the coming reconstruction of the area including the Kay Bailey Hutchison Convention Center.

More critically, the move would give the city an institution to attract and support a class of architects who practice beyond the bounds of corporate architecture; practitioners who rely on university appointments to subsidize more experimental, independent work.
The school could maintain a footprint in Arlington, devoting space there to issues essential to regional growth, in particular the study of suburban planning.
Whatever the solution, Dallas is long overdue for an injection of architectural talent and the culture that talent generates.
Where institutions and their employees are located matters.
The places in which those workers live shape their worldviews and behavior, and those individuals then shape the places they inhabit.
For Dallas to significantly shift the quality of its built environment — if it wants to be more livable, equitable and economically stable, not to mention less boring — it needs to have the institutions that shape its environment within city limits.
Kaizen pivots with part of high-rise plans on KERA site
Kaizen Development Partners LLC wants to build a 30-story hotel and condo tower just west of Uptown Dallas, instead of a previous proposal for a fully residential high-rise.
The proposed tower would house 90 condos and 200 hotel rooms on the southeast corner of about 2 acres the developer will buy from broadcaster KERA, according to public documents submitted to the Oak Lawn Committee.
The project is on the agenda for the committee's April 2 meeting, when it's also scheduled to consider consider plans for a 30-story apartment tower at The Crescent in Uptown.
The board reviews development plans in Oak Lawn and surrounding areas before they go to City Hall.
Kaizen announced the partnership with KERA last fall, when plans were unveiled for two towers on the site as well as a new home for the National Public Radio-affiliated broadcaster.
A 340-foot office tower is still in the cards. The new 30-story hotel and condo proposal replaces plans for a 27-story fully residential high-rise with 287 units on the same site.
Under the new proposal, the condos would occupy the upper 15 floors of the building and average 2,000 square feet in size — almost twice the footprint of the units in the previously proposed tower.

"We thought it would actually be accretive to both the neighborhood as well as to the project offerings, frankly, by having a hospitality offering with restaurants," Kaizen CEO Derrick Evers told Dallas Business Journal. Everything Kaizen plans to build is already allowed by right, according to Evers.

"We feel really good about where we're at from both the pre-leasing standpoint on the office tower, and then we feel really good about where we are in the ability to get it financed," Evers said.
Kaizen also developed the 25-story Link at Uptown office tower on Olive Street, which wrapped up construction in 2022 and has since brought on tenants such as law firm McGuireWoods and ad agency PMG.
"Uptown in particular still has tremendous demand. Everyone said that it would be insane to proceed during the midst of the black-swan event of Covid," Evers said about the construction of the Link. The Chalk Hill development has also brought on HN Capital Partners as a new partner in the project.

KERA has also partnered with Kaizen Development Partners to build a new headquarters within the broader Chalk Hill project.
Chalk Hill, a forthcoming mixed-use development set between North Harwood Street and Harry Hines Boulevard, is moving ahead with a new partner and a new element.
HN Capital Partners has joined Kaizen Development Partners on a project catalyzed by a new office building for KERA and the sale of some of the media organization’s acreage.
KERA partnered with Kaizen to build a new headquarters and studios on 1.42 acres and also sold the Dallas-based developer 2.4 adjacent acres.

Under current zoning, the partnership has the right to build the KERA office and additional office tower, set to rise 21 floors and span more than 400,000 square feet, at Chalk Hill.
While Kaizen and HN have the right to the hotel portion of the tower, the residential portion requires a special use permit.
Its closest neighboring structures include Hyatt House, Harwood District buildings like Bleu Ciel, Harwood No. 7 and CityMark, and Little Mexico.
The Chalk Hill site, with additional space slated for retail and garage and underground parking, borders the Katy Trail on its north end, its terrain sloping and meandering.
The development itself draws its name from the dirt under Dallas. Geologically speaking, Dallas County sits at the very edge of the Austin Chalk Formation.
Since the site is on a hill, the appellation flowed naturally, Evers said.

Why island6? The following piece “Suzhou Creek Reflections” offers some insight into the history behind the iconic name... 
This hand painted artwork was inspired by the area surrounding Suzhou Creek. This piece is very special to us because the red brick building in the foreground, the Fou Foong Flour Mill, is where our art collective was first established back in 2006! The mill was designed in 1897 by the British architectural firm Dallas and Atkinson, and founded by Mr. Sun Duoxin and his brother Mr. Sun Duosen from Anhui province.  
In 2002, most of the silos were demolished and the 'small packaged flour' warehouse, building #6, was left standing alone surrounded by the Suzhou Creek, and so the name "island6" emerged, and the rest is history! During this time, island6 Arts Center was known for its peculiar location in a field of rubble surrounded by modern sky-high towers creeping from the distance, a visual example of Shanghai's transformation from past to future. The background is the largest downtown residential community in the city known as "Zhongyuan Liangwancheng" (or Brilliant City). Between 40 to 50 thousand people live in this condominium complex. The demography of a small town in the rest of the world basically! The animation shows Liu Dao's playful character dusting off these towering buildings as if it were child's play. This piece showcases a seemingly normal Shanghai moment with just the right amount of fantasy and wonder making it an iconic island6 artwork.

Granite That Mesmerize your home
Each and every year, stone and tile trends change constantly in the architectural and design communities and can be difficult to keep up with. We at Contemporary Stone & Tile Design magazine wanted to get opinions from different architects and designers around the country to find out what they are seeing, and what they expect to see. Before getting into the trends they are seeing, let’s spend a little time getting to know those who are about to answer:
Lori Wiles— “I’m a true Midwesterner, born and raised in Missouri, now living in Iowa. Growing up, I spent lots of time in the working barns and classic farm houses in my rural area. My capable and creative mom gave me ample opportunity to draw, paint, sew and build things for fun. That led to a degree in interior design and a long career in the field. I’ve always been especially interested in interior architecture and how it impacts the people who use the spaces. My interior design firm specializes in planning new construction and re-modelling with the end user experience in mind.”
Ryan Thewes— “I grew up in Southern Indiana and graduated from Ball State University. After graduation, I was fortunate to get a job in Chicago, IL, working for a former Frank Lloyd Wright apprentice –
Don Erickson. The incredible experience of working for Don introduced me to the theories of Wright’s organic architecture which, amon
g many other things, focused on the use of natural materials and the creation of space. I expanded on my education of organic
architecture by also working for Robert Green, a former Frank Lloyd Wright apprentice in Atlanta, GA, and eventually an apprenticeship with Bart Prince in Albuquerque, NM. I am currently practicing out of Nashville, TN.”
Maxim Nasab— “I am the principal and founder of Apexx Architecture, a firm specializing in bridge architecture and recreational piers. Our firm is located in Tallahassee, FL. I am originally from Montréal, Canada. I got into architecture because it allowed me to pursue my love of science and technology, but also allowed my creativity to flourish. Architecture has the power to change cities for the better for generations. It is a profession that can truly make the world a better place and architects have the responsibility to ensure this through their designs.
I believe in designing for the people and the greater good rather than fame or recognition. I believe that great architecture is derived from honesty and transparency. Using local natural materials and allowing the structural system to express itself by integrating it within the design. Whenever I walked in buildings, and even today, I always tried to guess the materials that buildings were structurally supported by. It always made me a little sad when materials were not honest or true, or the structure was not evident. This is one reason why I went into bridge architecture. It is very hard to hide the structure of a bridge, and instead I always try to enhance its visibility, express its beauty and make it clear to the user as to how it is supported. Anyone should be able to walk in.”
Charmaine Wynter— “I am Jamaican Canadian, and an international multi-awarded interior designer with projects spanning the residential and hospitality sector. My natural design talent began to make its emergence in 1981, surprising family and friends, but it wasn’t until the late 1980s that I took it seriously and enrolled in an interior design program at a recognized college. I founded my design firm in Toronto, Canada in 1996; and later transitioned to the Dallas, TX, location in 2016, where it is now headquartered. Now many decades post-graduation, as principle designer, I jet back and forth to work projects of interest on both sides of the Canadian and U.S. boarders — infusing each with my signature distinctive luxurious living design aesthetics.”
Dawn D. Totty— “I started 25 years ago and it was fast and furious in New York. When I transitioned from there to the south, I was 1,000 miles away. I had to start from scratch. I had to reinvent myself. That was challenging.”
Trends with stone
One of the first things I discussed with each of our participants were the trends they were seeing with stone in particular. Over the years, the popularity of engineered stone has fluctuated, while natural stone seems to be extremely popular with some people rather than others. According to Wiles, she is seeing more people interested in using stone in their homes and offices than even a few years ago. “From my perspective, it’s become easier than ever to find the perfect material for any project with all of the stones available,” she said. “I particularly like the uniformly colored stones at the extremes of light and dark palettes. These make a great statement and give some confidence that a color palette can change through the years without having to change the large areas of stone.”
Wiles isn’t the only one that sees the popularity in natural stone. Thewes, Nasab and Wynter all agree with her. “What I have been seeing is a lot of natural materials, natural colors and natural tones,” said Nasab. “Limestone is really popular along with granites that have that limestone look. Minimalism and honesty in materials is coming back strong and will be here to stay for a while. Clients and users are craving that real feeling when they touch materials, which is why a lot of the companies are working hard to mimic that look and feel. Some of them are getting really close, too.”
Thewes is seeing a lot more requests for stone as the popularity of “Mid-Century Modern” design continues to rise. “I think part of this is because people still want modern design, but are turned off by the cold sterile nature of some of it,” he said. “The use of natural materials like wood and stone help soften the design yet allow us to keep a strong modern aesthetic. Linear stacked stone complements these types of projects perfectly by emphasizing the horizontal line and providing a defined texture that works well in opposition to smooth surfaces like wood, glass and drywall. Depending on the budget, we have had some pretty good success with engineered stone. However, for the more discerning client, it is tough to beat natural stone. While the wide range of colors are still often used and will never go out of style, we are seeing more of a request for darker colors. Almost black in some cases.”
Wynter is seeing popularity with quartz surfacing because of its look and durability. “Quartz is extremely popular with clients seeking a marble look, but the durability only provided by engineered stones,” said Wynter. “Stone is such a luxe material with its many faceted sheens and textures that there are trends within a trend. However, in general, I’m using more cool-toned hues with larger veining and fissure movement within the stone than a few years ago.”
Totty sees it not only with natural stone but also with quartz, because of how they look. “Patterns, movement and more color is making its way into the realm of interior design with the usage of quartz and marble being the forerunners,” said Totty. “Stone pigments that are currently trending are soft greens, grays and neutrals that are a wonderful complement to today’s interior design trends.”
When it comes to application of stone, according to Wynter, it is being more of the norm with her clients. “What’s great is that as the use of luxury stones are becoming more the norm, my clients are relaxing and spaces are more often taking on a casual luxe style,” said Wynter. “I’m using stone on the flooring, countertops and backsplashes, fireplace facades, accent walls and in outdoor living rooms.”
“While fireplaces continue to be the place that people think of using stone first, I like to incorporate stone in lots of areas in a home like kitchens and bathroom,” said Wiles. “In commercial settings, a stone wall or columns are a fairly easily constructed feature that suggests stability and permanence.  I’ll consider using it in any area that I think needs a great visual weight to help balance out the space.”
For Thewes, he is seeing the most common use for stone is in accent walls for both residential and commercial projects. “The ability to light the walls really accentuates the texture and draws attention to the feature,” said Thewes. “This is very effective in commercial projects where traditionally, more sterile and simple materials are used. The stone offers a good break from these materials while also providing a durable and maintenance-free surface.”
For Nasab, he is seeing stone used primarily for exterior paving, stairs and plazas. “It really enhances the site and gives it that extra touch of beauty, especially when it’s a natural stone,” he said.
Totty is utilizing marble and granite in big ways, such as installing it onto kitchen walls for a bold and elegant statement. “Kitchen larders, countertops, backsplashes and even floors are some of my favorite uses for granite, quartz and marble,” said Totty. “Both commercial and residential projects are now implementing stone surfaces to create a regal look with the benefit of durability.”
Tile Design Trends
When it comes to designing with tile, it seems that the material is a lot like stone, especially for Totty. “Floor-to-ceiling tiled walls in kitchens and bathrooms, and even laundry rooms, are very popular,” she said. “In many cases, the tile is the dominating focal point to a room’s decor.”
According to Nasab, whose area of expertise is not tile, he has noticed that tiles have continued to evolve and currently they are still hitting strong with mimicking the look of natural stone.
One thing that stands out to Thewes with tiles are the extremes they go to with size. “Tile size trends have continued to swing away from the standard 12- x 12-inch tile to either extreme,” said Thewes. “Either very small or very large, depending on the application. For our projects, we still focus on the more earthy and muted colors that are more simple and less busy. Black and white are timeless and can be adapted to any style or aesthetic so they are always popular.
“There has been a pretty significant rise in the popularly of the wood plank tiles that gives the look of a wood floor, but the durability of tile,” Thewes went onto say. “I tend to shy away from materials that pretend to be something they are not, but I have seen a quite a few of these fake wood products that are very well done.”
Wiles has also noticed the different types and feels of tile that are currently on the market. “I continue to be amazed at how many tile designs there are and excited about the tactile finishes they have now,” said Wiles. “We’re seeing our client’s willingness to use a variety of shapes like hexagons, octagons and circles increase. They’re now open to shapes that would have been unheard of just a few years ago. It also seems that tile manufacturers have become really in tune with current color palettes and color palette projections, which helps designers use their products more easily.”
“Tiles are dimensional and showing up in large formats,” said Wynter. “Pattern is back after a long rest so we are embracing lace, ethnic and graphic print on wall and floor tile. Keep your eyes peeled for hues of green and coral — especially this year.”
As far as applications go, according to Wiles, “Beautifully tiled bathrooms are the number one request from homeowners so we’re designing fully tiled showers, tub surrounds and backsplashes. The development of the really large-scaled and textural tiles that mimic other materials makes feature walls a big hit as well.”
Wynter said that tile will always be the strongest in commercial applications due to its durability and resilient nature, but it is making strong headway into the residential arena as the popularity for outdoor backyard oasis’ increase. Totty agrees with Wynter in the outdoor use of tile. “Outdoor kitchens are now showcasing tiled areas for durability, as well as aesthetics,” said Totty. “Tile is still the first choice for most home and commercial installations, in particular, shower walls and floors, laundry and mud rooms, as well as entryways for low maintenance and easy clean-up.”
“For tile, floors are still the main use,” said Thewes. “Occasionally, we will see an accent wall or something similar executed, but mainly floors and shower surrounds are most popular.”
Trends moving forward
Finally, we asked these architects and designers about the trends moving forward for both stone and tile.
Totty– “Tile with graphic, bold patterns and colors are quite favorable and are being used as statement makers in powder rooms, kitchen floors and laundry rooms to create that ‘wow’ factor in interior design. Granite and marble with movement are now used as art. Matching up patterned seams and placed vertically on walls in high-end hotel lobbies creates an amazing show stopping affect to any wall.”
Wynter— “Green is coming on strong as a trend color that has made it to classic status, so I predict we will see green marbles, green granites in all hues from glass to jade, as of green slates.”
Nasab— “I believe that natural colors will stay for a while, especially in stone. It is hard to beat natural stone, especially now that it has become much more affordable. What I am seeing in tile is black and whites coming back. That modern minimalistic design is coming back strong. There is no better material than stone in terms of natural beauty and bang for the buck. I would encourage designers and clients to find local quarries and start from there rather than hit the foreign stones right off the bat. It really is a beautiful thing to use materials that are locally sourced and they truly make the projects feel as if they belong in the site they are built on.”
Thewes— “Looking into the future, I don’t really see much of a change for tile other than possibly an increase in use due to its durability. It’s a battle between what the client desires more, warmth or durability. However, I do think that the use of stone will continue to rise as it provides both warmth and durability. As the quality of engineered stone improves, costs should go down and using stone in projects will no longer be a major drain on budgets. Durability and low maintenance are always important client requests and this material fits right in with that while also providing a major increase in quality and design. The addition of stone to any project increases its value and the perception of cost.”
Wiles— “I think we will continue to see natural and natural-looking hard surface materials in demand. These will be used in larger areas and combined with other materials that have more of an artisan vibe to create really durable, tactile and friendly environments. Tile and stone are really designer’s friend. Once you know how to best use them and have great craftspeople to install them, they can transform any space.”

Who would have thought that the most expensive house in the world would be located not far from the poverty-stricken slums of the inner city of South Mumbai, India? The 27-story skyscraper, known as Antilia, is owned by the richest man in the country, Mukesh Ambani. Yes, the entire skyscraper cost Mukesh an astonishing 2 billion dollars to build, and belongs to just him and his family of five! How big of a house does one need? Well, with a net worth of 81.9 billion dollars, why won’t you be enjoying a life of luxury? So what is life like living in the most expensive house in the world? In this video, we will dive deeper into what Antilia has to offer.
Antilia
The building is named after a mythical island, also known as The Isle of the Seven Cities. The story regarding this island is from an old Liberian legend, in which bishops escaped during the Muslim conquest in Hispania, and created seven settlements there. Why the building is named after this island is a mystery to us all.
The Antilia is 568 feet high, allowing the building to offer stunning views of the Mumbai skyline and the Arabian Sea. Many ceilings are double or triple heightened so it seems that the 27-story skyscraper is more of a 50 to 60-floor building! The first six floors are all parking areas that can cater to 168 vehicles! Being a car enthusiast, this also includes Mukesh’s precious million dollars worth customized Mercedes-Benz Maybach 62, BMW 760i, a Bentley Continental Flying Spur, and Rolls-Royce Phantom! But it’s not just cars that Antilia caters to. This 400,000 square foot building has not one, but three entire helipads on its roof. However, it is a violation of residential bylaws in Mumbai and the helipads are not operational as of yet because they still have to be certified air-worthy by the Director-General of Civil Aviation, and get approval from the central defense and environment ministries.
Above the garage is an extravagant lobby with nine high-speed elevators. And on top of that is an entire recreation center that includes a lap pool, a gym, a juice bar, an ice cream parlor, a dance studio, and a yoga studio. The building also features a spa and a ballroom, the latter adorned with numerous crystal chandeliers that cover 80% of the ceiling! There’s also a 50-seat theatre, multiple balconies, and terraces that have luscious gardens. Vegetation is attached to the sides of the building as well. This is meant to absorb sunlight so the interior is as cool as possible. Seems like a billionaire even tries their best to save on their electricity bills!
Now if you’re asking yourself what more does a private house need? Well, the Antilia also features something called an ‘ice room’. This has a snow generator that quite literally spits out snowflakes from the walls! Here we have a winter wonderland in the middle of India, something you probably didn’t expect from even the most expensive house in the world.
Design
Two US architectural firms, Perkins & Will based in Dallas, and Hirsch Business Associates based in Los Angeles, were in charge of designing the Antilia. The interior of the building was looked after by an Australian-based construction company, Leighton Contractors, and then later completed by B. E. Billimoria & Company Ltd. The skyscraper was built to house 600 staff members as well. This includes cooks, cleaners, and security personnel, all there for the maintenance and upkeep of the building! Mukesh Ambani’s residence is also designed to withstand an earthquake of eight on the Richter scale!
Moreover, the unique structure of the building isn’t just thanks to the billionaire’s eccentric taste. Behind its design, is Hindi influence and religious symbolism. The home is divided into six sections that represent earth, water, fire, air, sound, and light! These elements are placed bottom-to-top reflecting the ascension of enlightenment. The interior design also uses the shapes of the lotus and the sun, which are meant to represent rebirth. These two features can be seen throughout the building using crystals, marble, and even mother-of-pearl. However, no two floors use the same materials or plan, the idea of the design is consistent, but no repetition. There’s also a temple in the building that Mukesh’s family prays in regularly and many statues of Hindu deities throughout the home. This includes Ganesh, a deity that removes obstacles, and Shiva, a deity that destroys to make way for new creation. It seems the Ambanis have high regard for their religion since the billionaire family refrained from immediately moving to Antilia due to a fear of bad luck when the housewarming was done in November 2010. It wasn’t before Mukesh had almost 50 renowned pandits invited to conduct pujas and address Vastu issues in the building, that the Ambanis took up residence in September 2011.

Are we itching to know more about Mukesh Ambani? This billionaire is a petroleum titan and chairman of Reliance Industries, a Fortune Global 500 company and "the largest private-sector corporation in India”. He is also responsible for a fifth of India’s exports! His father, Dhirubhai Ambani, owns the world’s biggest producer of polyester fibers and yarns. Mukesh Ambani has multiplied his inheritance to maintain his name in the lists of richest people in the world for many years straight and is considered the richest man in India! Does it seem to all make sense now?
Mumbai
The city itself where Antilia is located in the commercial capital of India. Mumbai is also called ‘the city that never sleeps’. Ring a bell? The city is also famous for being responsible for the entertainment industry in India, also known as Bollywood. I bet that rang another bell. Despite Mumbai being home to the world’s most expensive house, it’s also home to the world’s largest slum, unfortunately. Because of this very reason, Mukesh has received a lot of backlashes. The tall billion-dollar skyscraper is quite offensive to the neighboring slum deep in poverty just a few blocks away. The gap between the rich and the poor has to be the most prominent in this city than in any other place in the world! According to New York Times, Gian Prakash in 2010 states that the Antilia “is in a way reflective of how the rich are turning their faces away from the city”.
Not to mention, the 4,532 square meter land on which Antilia was built housed an orphanage called Currimbhoy Ebrahim Khoja Yateemkhana with 60 orphans and belonged to a charity run by the Waqf board. The orphanage had been founded in 1895 by Currimbhoy Ebrahim, a wealthy shipowner, and in 2002, the trust requested permission to sell this land, and the charity commissioner gave the required permission three months later. The charity sold the land allocated for the education of underprivileged Khoja children to Antilia Commercial Private Limited. The sale, however, was carried out without the required permission of the Maharashtra State Board of Waqfs. The Waqf minister, Nawab Malik, and the revenue department of the Government of Maharashtra opposed this land sale. This led to a long-running case that was dismissed sometime in 2018, and the charges were stated blasphemous.
People who defend Mukesh talk about how he opened a charitable hospital and led numerous philanthropic ventures, but his excessive spendings can be difficult to ignore, such as how he bought his wife, Nita Ambani, a 60 million dollar airbus for her birthday! The airbus included a living room, a bedroom, a satellite TV, a sky bar, and even a spa. He even spent his money on an intimate private concert by Beyonce for his daughter’s wedding that cost him approximately 100 million dollars! The family does claim to be humble, but it is indeed true that Nita owns a variety of customized lipsticks that come in bottles of gold and silver! She also owns a vintage tea set from one of Japan’s oldest brands, Noritake, costing her a whopping 200,000 dollars! And of course, being a billionaire, one should also fly in style because first-class just isn’t enough. Mukesh spent another 73 million dollars on a Boeing Business Jet II. The jet includes an executive office, a private bedroom suite, and a kitchen! Surprisingly, however, the Antilia seems to be the Ambani family’s only home, which is unexpectedly different from other billionaires who tend to buy a lot of properties and residences around the world!
