4th LEAF: SEASON 01

EPISODE 01: PROMISES

TEASER:

[INTENSE MUSIC]

(“Emperor’s New Clothes,” Panic! at the Disco)

Open on a shot of THE CITY at dusk. The sun sets behind scattered towering buildings. The city lights rapidly sparkle to life.

CUT TO:

BONNIE GRAY [AFRICAN AMERICAN FEMALE] lays motionless in her bed. Her hair is buzzed short. Her hands are folded neatly across her stomach, her legs stretched out straight. Her fingers are loaded with ornate rings, which glitter as she begins to wake.

As the MUSIC rises, BONNIE’s eyes shoot open. She sits up, expressionless, and swings her legs out of bed.

CUT TO:

BONNIE’s LIVING ROOM: stuffed full with relics and unusual items in glass cases.Comfortable sofas, enough for a small crowd, clearly never occupied. Mismatched,overfilled bookshelves line every wall. A stuffed wolf is standing on two legs with its back to the room, BONNIE-JACK’s dusty red hat resting over its head.

Standing with her back to the wolf, BONNIE pulls on piles of protective gear, similar to that of a firefighter, covered with arcane patchwork.

CUT TO:

BONNIE’s KITCHEN: BONNIE retrieves a collection of jars from the fridge, each one containing a more unusual substance or creature than the last. BONNIE stuffs the jars into her seemingly bottomless pockets, then walks away without shutting the door.

CUT TO:

CITY STREETS: BONNIE’s car tires spin against wet pavement as she heads out to work. The beat-up white car passes through dark city streets.

CUT TO:

A DARK ALLEYWAY, connecting multiple apartment blocks. BONNIE tumbles down from the sky, narrowly catching herself on the edge of a fire escape. She twists, allowing herself to drop to the ground, landing on her feet. She continues her backwards roll, avoiding the landing of three dazed, oozing ghosts [any 1900’s decade dress] who drop down after her.

The ghosts, sprawled in a messy pile, phase out of sight. They return before they have fully faded, now on their feet and stumbling towards BONNIE.

Still following the momentum from her fall, BONNIE skips backwards, pulling a large jar from a small pocket in her jacket. BONNIE allows the jar to slip from her fingers.

The glass shatters. The ghosts drop to their hands and knees as if in agony. BONNIE propels herself off of the nearest garbage bin and back up to the fire escape, jumping and climbing to the next level.

BONNIE kicks down the ladder on the third level. It lands against the window sill on the opposite building.

The ghosts appear on the stairs as BONNIE begins a swift but shaky stroll across the ladder bridge. On the other side, BONNIE grips the window ledge above her, kicking the ladder back into place.

FIXED SHOT:

4th FLOOR WINDOW: BONNIE slowly heaves herself up to the next level. When her feet are halfway across the screen, a fresh pair of ghostly hands emerges through the glass, clinging to her ankle.

BONNIE, visible from the knees-down, kicks at the hands. She speaks with a subtle Louisianan accent.

BONNIE

[growling, offscreen]

Quit that. Quit it. Git. Git, now!

Her feet dangle unevenly as she releases one hand, growling with effort. Her helmet drops across the screen, followed by one of her gloves. BONNIE snaps her uncovered fingers. The ghostly hands withdraw, frightened. BONNIE growls again, vaguely annoyed but satisfied. Her feet disappear up-screen.

The first three ghosts fling themselves against the window.

BONNIE inches her way along the fourth floor window sills until she reaches a rusted gutter pipe. She removes her second glove with her teeth, and knocks one of her rings against the pipe, which begins to vibrate until it is humming.

As more ghostly hands reach through the glass, BONNIE presses her fist to the pipe, which draws her up towards the roof. Grinning, she extends her free middle finger to the ghosts, whose fast-approaching, disappointed faces are reflected in the gem of her ring.

CUT TO:

BONNIE rolls onto the roof. She frowns with irritation as she realizes that her pipe-riding arm is now dangling uselessly. She pushes her arm back into its socket. Dozens of ghostly hands begin grasping and oozing over the edge of the apartment.

BONNIE walks towards the center of the building, leaning her full weight against a planter box. When it doesn’t budge, she swipes some of the ghostly ooze off of her ankle and applies it to the base of the box. The planter slides away, revealing a secret panel. A handful of ghosts draw within arm’s reach of her.

BONNIE opens the hidden panel and pulls out an ornate silver casing. She tosses out the burned crystals she finds inside, replacing them with brightly colored gems. BONNIE snaps the casing shut, causing half of the ghosts to lean back into an unwilling slumber.

Eying the remaining ghosts, BONNIE glances towards the neighboring roof. She gauges the distance to the roof, the increasingly wakeful ghosts she will need to dodge, and the various objects she might use to assist herself.

Testing her recently relocated shoulder, BONNIE stands, taking a running start, which leads her off-screen towards the ledge.

CUT TO:

A DAMP SEWER. BONNIE calmly tests the weight of two short sticks. Still deciding, she shrugs away from a clawed hand that swings into sight.

BONNIE takes three steps back as she continues to duck and twist to avoid the rabid attacks of a humanoid creature. The creature lunges; BONNIE spins away, slamming her chosen stick into the creature’s chest, pinning it to the dampwall. As the creature flails in pain, BONNIE pulls out her phone.

BONNIE’S PHONE SCREEN

[Unsent text, addressed to an unlisted number]

FERAL PICKUP: URGEN

BONNIE deletes the letters ‘URGEN,’ replacing them with ‘CRISIS: TEMP. CONTAINED.’

CUT TO:

BONNIE juggles the remaining stick over to her dominant hand, hitting ‘SEND’ on the phone. She slams the second stick into the forehead of the shrieking monster as she strolls away.

CUT TO:

A NORMAL HOUSE. BONNIE strolls around the outside, spraying the perimeter with a hand tank of holy water.

CUT TO:

A regular house party, guests dancing with abandon. Green lights flash. BONNIE kicks down the front door, twirling a pair of iron bars.

The party guests, suddenly oozing ghosts, attempt to flee in a panic, but find that they cannot fade through the walls. BONNIE works her way through the crowd with the iron bars, smashing each guest into a puff of smoke. Once she has finished, she approaches the radio, which is now housing a small green fire.

BONNIE pulls out her hand tank and spritzes the fire, which abruptly flares into a hungry blaze, stretching across the walls and ceiling.

BONNIE stumbles back, plunging her hands into her pockets, pulling out a series of ash-filled jars. BONNIE tosses the jars into the flames. BONNIE eases her way around the room, seeking an exit. Offscreen, the jars shatter in the heat.

As BONNIE realizes that she is trapped in a tight corner, the green flames die down, simmering into green coals, neatly contained within the thrown jars.

CUT TO:

As the sun rises, BONNIE’s battered white car pulls in front of a 10-storybuilding. She walks, slumping, past a pair of frowning gargoyles that guard the walkup to the building.

CUT TO:

4TH LEAF WAITING ROOM: a comfortable space filled with sunshine, soft pillows, and snacks in every corner.

BONNIE wobbles on her feet, considering keeling over onto the appealingly cleanshag rug.

Instead, she makes her way to a chair at a small breakfast table, where she eases back into an expressionless face. HASSAN passes by, his face unseen, his gloved hands filled with platters of food.

After checking that he is not watching, BONNIE jerks her injured shoulder to test it, pleased when her fingers seem to function normally. The MUSIC concludes as she sets her eyes on HASSAN’s seat, waiting for him to join her.
