Filipino Food and Culture Are Making a Big Splash With the Launch of a Night Market

“It’s the lineup of what our community has been working on and fighting for for generations,” Desi Danganan told Eater. Danganan is the executive director of Undiscovered SF, the night market set to launch in the SF Mint on August 18. It’s a multifaceted event with food vendors, dance and music performances, and retail, as well as large goals: to create public awareness for the new cultural district and drive economic development of the district with Filipino businesses.

The district, SOMA Pilipinas, is located within a huge swath of the city from Second Street on the east to 11th Street on the west and Market to Brannan Street. It, along with 13 other districts across California, was certified in July 2017 as one of its first state-level cultural districts.

ILIGAN CITY, Dec. 30 (PIA)- In commemoration of the 123rd death anniversary of Dr. Jose Rizal, acting city mayor Jemar L. Vera Cruz cited three important characters of Rizal in a program held at the city public plaza.

Vera Cruz said Rizal cares for the people. During his time, he inspired the revolutionaries and fought against the influence of invaders. "As Iliganons do we care for our Iligan? If we care for Iligan, we can do great things for Iligan, for our people especially the poor," he pointed out.

"Second, Rizal cares for our country; he stood up for the people of our country, stood up against the power during his time, fought for those who enslaved the people. If power becomes exploiter or oppressor, can we stand up against that power?" Vera Cruz said.

"And third, Rizal cares for the suffering of our people, for the poor of our country; he sacrificed himself, self-gift for the sake of the country and freedom for all. Are we willing to give up our lives as self-gift to the people of Iligan?" he added.

Meanwhile, Prof. Marlowe D. Danganan from the Department of History of St. Peter’s College-Iligan, who was the guest speaker, narrated the ‘Life of Dr. Jose Rizal’ relative to this year’s theme, “Huwaran ng Pilipino sa Ikadalawamput Isang Siglo.”

Highlighting the commemoration was the wreath-laying led by city officials and the different section heads of the city hall, along with other government line agencies, the Boy Scouts of the Philippines, the Iligan City Police Office (ICPO), the Armed Forces of the Philippines, and the Bureau of Fire Protection.

A 21-Gun Salute from the PNP-ICPO was also executed. (With report from Biema Minoza, Radyo Pilipinas).

Sindeo is back in the mortgage business after acquisition

In June, many in the industry were shocked to hear that Sindeo, a fintech startup based out of San Francisco that connects homebuyers with loans, was shutting its doors and laying off all its staff. The website went dark, replaced with a “farewell” letter from co-founder and CEO Nick Stamos.

But as of today, sindeo.com is back up and running, and the letter is nowhere in sight. What happened?

According to Christopher Hussain, an original co-founder of Sindeo who’s now the CEO and founder of RealKey, the company was acquired by one of its investors (which investor, the terms and the sum of the acquisition weren’t disclosed).

Crunchbase lists three investors for Sindeo’s seed and Series A funding rounds:

Second Century Ventures (which is owned and operated by the National Association of Realtors)

Renren Inc.

Hussain told Inman that Ori Zohar, Sindeo’s other co-founder, and Jobe Danganan, the company’s legal and compliance experts, are the two members of the leadership team that he knows are staying on board the company. “As far as the rest of the leadership team, that is a question mark,” he said.

“Startups are hard and simplifying the highly regulated, complex business of mortgages is even harder,” wrote Stamos in the letter posted on sindeo.com in June. “I believed we had overcome the biggest hurdles, but unfortunately, we didn’t.”

It looks like the company is going to get another chance — Hussain confirmed that the scope and focus of Sindeo is going to remain the same. “We built a place where people could shop and apply for a mortgage from a robust marketplace of over 1,000 loan programs, with one single application and one credit check,” Stamos wrote in June. “We did what everyone said couldn’t be done.”
