Recent photo of this classic Shepard Fairey mural in Echo Park, paying tribute to Darby Crash of the Germs.

The mural—based on a 1980 photo by Gary Leonard—was created in 2009, tagged up within 24 hours of its completion, covered up by Leonard for seven years and finally restored in 2016.

The Germs, hailing from the late 70’s/early 80’s LA punk scene, are one of the prototypical self-destructive punk bands, and their only album is a masterpiece. Unfortunately a hard to come by masterpiece—I don’t own any of the vinyl pressings (most of which are bootlegs) and it doesn’t stream, the the MP3’s on my iPod are where this album lives for me. I haven’t read this biography yet, but I’m excited to.
