I've been thinking recently about how shinigami don't have biological genders so how do they identify genders and pronouns and stuff and I'm writing it all here just because I want to and I can
My first thought was that their names have certain parts which makes them seem more feminine or masculine. Let's take a look at the names
Dudes: Ryuk, Gelus, Calikarcha, Armonia Justin Beyondermason, Sidoh, Deridovely, Guukku, Zellogi
Girlies: Rem, Daril Ghiroza, Nu, Midora, Kinddara Guivelostain
Observing the letters and structures of these names, I at first assumed that masculine shinigami would have names with u, e, and o as the first noticeable vowels, while feminine shinigami might have a and i, but as we can see here, that is not the case. The meaning of their names does not really apply either because in the human world most of them are just gibberish.
The second thought I had was their appearance. In the Shinigami realm, is there a specific quality to a shinigamis appearance that makes them masculine or feminine and determines how other shinigami will refer to them? I noticed that Rem and Midora, both female shinigami, have patterns on their faces that make it look like they're wearing lipstick, which is something none of the male shinigami have. However, not all female shinigami have this feature, and Ryuk looks like he's wearing eyeliner so I've decided makeup-like features cannot be accounted for. I have noticed that typically the male shinigami have "sharper" more beastly features and the females have "softer" more swamp-creature-like features, for example most of the males have lean skeletal bodies and the females tend to be plumper, but there are numerous exceptions to this rule and therefore cannot be accounted for.
Voice could be the defining trait but its hard to say because only three (I think [actually I think guukku is voiced in the first episode, I'm pretty sure that's him]) shinigami have actually been animated and voiced, but you could definitely say that rem obviously has a more feminine voice than ryuk and sidoh do. This is not easy to use as a good reason because of how little of the voices we know, but I think it might be the right track.
It could also be true that Shinigami choose their gender and pronouns, and since there aren't many shinigami in the Shinigami realm, they all know each other well enough to know everyone's gender.
If you have any ideas pls reply or reblog with them because the Shinigami realm needs to be talked about more

death note for the fandom ask!
thank you for indulging me
Blorbo (fave character, think about most): genuinely so hard bc while reading it i kept saying outloud to myself alone in my room "okay ___ is my number one favourite character for real this time" at different points in the story. List included L, Light, Misa, Rem, and Ryuk
Scrunkly (baby who gives me cuteness aggression, so Shaped): Near and Mello were very endearing in the manga. I'll pick Mello final answer because of his wonderfully stupid outfits
Scrimblo Bimblo (underrated fave): I really liked Aizawa while reading the manga! idk how underrated he is but i appreciate him
Glup Shitto (obscure fave): Armonia Justin Beyondormason aka Justin the Jewel Skeleton
Poor Little Meow Meow (problematic pathetic fave): this is the definition of Light Yagami
Horse Plinko (character I torment for fun): Light is my favourite to make fun of but also everyone dragging Matsuda constantly never got old
Eeby Deeby (character I would send to super hell): also Light Yagami

tbh I think its rlllllllllllly unfortunate that they decided to use Sidoh as the character with more page/screentime because Daril Ghiroza is a little s*xy while Sidoh is just kind of. A round lil dude.. thank u for coming to my ted talk.

has it struck anyone else as kind of strange that a member of the spk and a shinigami have the same first names?

Shinigami Headcanons - Part 1
Midora
She is Ryuk's half-sister.
Midora isn’t actually chubby. She has sponge-like skin and can store large amounts of water in it. Her appearance depends on the hydration level of her skin. Midora becomes skinnier if she loses water and chubbier if she is well hydrated. She can control the hydration state. Releasing water from the skin can occur relatively quickly, within minutes, taking up water takes longer up to several hours if the skin is completely dehydrated.
Midora can walk on walls and ceilings like a gecko if the hydration level is below 25%, otherwise, she’s too heavy. Also, for the same reason she cannot fly if she stored too much water.
Midora can stay underwater for three hours without breathing and dive 300 m deep, but she rarely does this. She prefers shallow swampy areas over deep expended water bodies, like lakes and oceans. She also prefers sweet water, but she can tolerate salt water as well.
She can change the color of her skin and uses it to express emotions. Dull colors (sand color or light greenish colors) correlate to a neutral mood. Bright yellow and brown colors represent a good mood, excitation, or confidence. Darker reddish colors and black mean that she’s in a bad mood or aggressive.
She cleans her eyes frequently with her tong.
Nu
Nu's body looks vaguely octopus-like. She has several tentacles, which are usually buried in the ground.
She can change her color and skin structure and uses it to camouflage.
The supporting structures of her body are primarily made of cartilage. Very few parts of it consist of bone.
She rarely speaks. She rather stares at others and judges them silently.
She rarely interacted with humans. But if she does, she refuses to speak any modern language despite being able to understand most of them. She mostly speaks Sumerian or Latin with humans, sometimes other ancient languages. Nu doesn’t care if they can't understand her.
Nu emits chemicals which influences humans. They may cause vivid, unpleasant hallucinations. If people are exposed for too long, they become crazy. They often harm themselves or others in their hallucinogenic state. The substances don’t affect Shinigami, but they can smell them (neutral smell, neither pleasant nor unpleasant).
Nu’s good friends with Rem, but she thinks her decision to sacrifice herself for a human is despicable.
Nu considers humans as the cancer of the planet and wouldn’t mind if they go extinct. She is very empathic, but with Earth, not with humans. She is aware that Shinigami will go extinct with them if they don’t find another way to prolong their life anymore. But since she assumes that the human race won’t last longer than a few decades, centuries at best, this is unavoidable.
Armonia Justin
He is Daril Ghiroza’s brother.
The crystals are only partially accessories, some grow directly on his skin. The size and material depend on his diet. Some crystals are composed of toxic materials, but it doesn’t affect him.
He doesn’t care if the crystals are valuable according to human standards. He likes them if they are pretty.
His skin is partially golden in color, but it isn’t real gold. The other parts are grey.
He is intelligent and quite nerdy and knows a lot (compared to most other Shinigami) about the Shinigami realm, Shinigami, and the rules. He also knows some things about the human world. He likes to get attention for his knowledge.
Armonia Justin hates it when he is wrong and rarely admits his mistakes. If other Shinigami point out that he was wrong, he claims they misunderstood him and blames them for not listening well enough.
Armonia Justin can build simple machines and likes to show off with them. He also built a propulsion system for his throne, but it frequently breaks. If other Shinigami ask why it doesn’t work, it's because he “works on improvements”. If others point out that he always works on improvements, and want to know what he improved, he tells them that they would not understand it anyway.
