#Kinddara Guivelostain
Text
I've been thinking recently about how shinigami don't have biological genders so how do they identify genders and pronouns and stuff and I'm writing it all here just because I want to and I can
My first thought was that their names have certain parts which makes them seem more feminine or masculine. Let's take a look at the names
Dudes: Ryuk, Gelus, Calikarcha, Armonia Justin Beyondermason, Sidoh, Deridovely, Guukku, Zellogi
Girlies: Rem, Daril Ghiroza, Nu, Midora, Kinddara Guivelostain
Observing the letters and structures of these names, I at first assumed that masculine shinigami would have names with u, e, and o as the first noticeable vowels, while feminine shinigami might have a and i, but as we can see here, that is not the case. The meaning of their names does not really apply either because in the human world most of them are just gibberish.
The second thought I had was their appearance. In the Shinigami realm, is there a specific quality to a shinigamis appearance that makes them masculine or feminine and determines how other shinigami will refer to them? I noticed that Rem and Midora, both female shinigami, have patterns on their faces that make it look like they're wearing lipstick, which is something none of the male shinigami have. However, not all female shinigami have this feature, and Ryuk looks like he's wearing eyeliner so I've decided makeup-like features cannot be accounted for. I have noticed that typically the male shinigami have "sharper" more beastly features and the females have "softer" more swamp-creature-like features, for example most of the males have lean skeletal bodies and the females tend to be plumper, but there are numerous exceptions to this rule and therefore cannot be accounted for.
Voice could be the defining trait but its hard to say because only three (I think [actually I think guukku is voiced in the first episode, I'm pretty sure that's him]) shinigami have actually been animated and voiced, but you could definitely say that rem obviously has a more feminine voice than ryuk and sidoh do. This is not easy to use as a good reason because of how little of the voices we know, but I think it might be the right track.
It could also be true that Shinigami choose their gender and pronouns, and since there aren't many shinigami in the Shinigami realm, they all know each other well enough to know everyone's gender.
If you have any ideas pls reply or reblog with them because the Shinigami realm needs to be talked about more

Dialogue: January 28, 2013
Author: @monaluisa
For: @almostsane-things
Pairings/Characters: No pairings/Ryuk, Shinigami King, Light Yagami, Izanami (mythology, mentioned)
Rating/Warnings: General/No warnings apply
Prompt: What if the shinigami had more eldritch effects that slowly leech into the owner of the Death Notes? It can be physical, but I’d rather see mental effects, powers, and/ or deterioration. Try not to be ableist with it.
Author’s notes: The “Lady Who Invites” or “the Lady” refers to Izanami, the Japanese creator goddess of the dead. Yomi is essentially the Japanese underworld in Shinto mythology.
Ryuk.
Good evening, Your Majesty.
This is the human you’ve possessed?
  Sure is.
  Light Yagami…
Interesting.
  Careful.
He’ll wake up if he hears you.
  He’s deep in sleep.
Look at how still he is.
He hardly even breathes.
  Look, Ryuk.
How fragile he is…
It would be quite simple to break his neck, wouldn’t it?
  That would kill a human,
and you’re not one to break your own rules.
What are you here for, anyway?
You haven’t come to the Earth for millenia.
I wanted to see him for myself.
He’s outlived the rest.
Ha! You have a way with timing, don’t you?
Don’t you see how low the numbers are?
  It’s true.
The sun will rise soon,
And I would be surprised if he lives ‘til it sets.
But I want to know what it’s done to him after all this time.
  …
Why are you laughing like that? Have you forgotten to whom you speak?
  Oh, please.
Spare the formalities.
Why should I revere you?
Your dominion is dust and ash,
Your riches are bones and names in a book,
Your subjects have nothing to do but wait to die,
And when we do, it will be long and excruciating.
  Ryuk.
  It’s all your fault, too.
That’s the thing.
We had it good back in Yomi.
Hell, the apples there were better than the ones here!
It was you who was dissatisfied.
It was you who wanted the attention of the Lady Who Invites.
Don’t speak of that wretched woman.
Funny to hear you say that.
I can remember a time when
She was all you ever wanted.
Your cheeks flushed when even Her burned rags
Touched the ground where you stood.
  …
I damn this idea of ‘love.’
You, Gelus, Rem…
It only ever gets us into trouble.
You would do best to shut your mouth, Ryuk.
The Lady may be listening.
Well, I’m done talking about Her.
Back to you.
Your folly is the reason She cursed us.
And afterwards,
When we were too hungry
and feverish
and rotten
to think anymore,
It was you we turned to.
Nu might have prophesied that the book would be our cure,
And Armonia may have bound it together,
But for some reason,
it was you who we made King.
Of course, it’s worth nothing now.
Armonia’s gold corrodes and turns brittle.
Nu loses her vision one eye at a time.
And we know now what you really are.
You can doubt the legitimacy of my reign,
But you cannot deny its existence.
You cannot call me powerless
When for a million of our years,
And nearly five hundred of his,
Kinddara Guivelostain’s teeth were drenched with the blood
Of the traitors among you.
Call me a traitor if you’d like.
You only came here to ask me a question;
I ought to answer you, if you’re so powerful.
  Look at him.
You wanted to know what it did.
The truth is, the Death Note acted on both of you the same way.
He’s convinced he’s greater than he is.
But this time, it entertains you.
Why is that?
Weak as you were back then,
You were still a kami;
He’s nothing but a human.
He’s like a parrot, mimicking our power.
Isn’t that amusing?
  What does it matter?
It always gives them a sense of imagined strength.
What’s remarkable is that he hasn’t buckled under his deeds.
I thought humans were supposed to be weak, compassionate.
This is no typical human, Your Majesty.
If he has a heart at all, it’s a Shinigami’s.
But he is not one of us.
It must weigh on him.
  He’s losing his mind.
With every kill, he’s lost a little more remorse;
He let his own father die.
He let his sister be abducted by criminals.
Sometimes, he wakes up and paces the room,
Talking to the dead as if they can hear him.
Other times, he sleeps for hours, looking half-dead,
like a man with a fever does…
I doubt he’d wake up at all if there weren’t
Lies for him to tell
Or praise for him to take
Or work for him to do.
He seems ill every now and then.
Feverish, shaking like a child,
His skin turns pale,
His balance leaves him.
  There’s not a human that can stand our power;
He’s just held out longer than most.
He’s only alive
because he’s certain of the godhood he created.
  …
  What do you see?
The sun is rising.
Tell me,
What will he think when he dies tonight?
I want to know the look in his eyes when you write his name.
Your guess is as good as mine.
  …
  Go on, now.
The bells are ringing.
He’ll wake up.
They frighten him, after all…

Death Note: Sitcom AU Headcanons
Well, I have some ideas for a mediocre Death Note AU. I hope that some people may enjoy them.
- I think that the aesthetic that would be best suited to this particular piece, would be the turquoise tinged, shakily filmed dark comedies, with an absent laugh track and close up shots so thorough, that you can see the pitting of the actors’ complexions. The kind you may be weary of seeing so often.
- Rem is human. I thought it would be quite interesting, if throughout the entire run, she would not speak, or she would speak very little. The entire story is seen through her point of view, her actions, reactions and expressions. She is a delivery woman for a Meals On Wheels business, delivering repetitive, congealed dinners to the elderly and disabled in her area. Her passionless employers frequently hear good things said about her by her clients, how she engages them in lively conversation. In actuality, she merely listens wordlessly to them, smiles and nods a little as they talk about the events of their lives and that makes them happy.
- Rem shares a flat with Ryuk. I think that Ryuk would work in law, though I am unsure of the exact role he would have in this line of work. He is rarely ever seen out of his professional attire and never seen, actually living in the flat. He pops in to leave his rent money, pick up some small thing, take a mouthful of cider straight from the bottle and then he leaves. These are the only times he talks to Rem. He has a very understated, yet inseparable friendship with Light (who also works in law) and more or less lives with him. He does so, under the pretense of closely studying the cases of his clients with Light. However, all we see is them doing, is making hugely cold and snide remarks about them over sippy cups of alcohol white they play roleplay games online. There is an awful lot of affectionate hand holding and hugging on the sofa, with their ties round their heads.
- All this is much to the chagrin of Light’s girlfriend, Misa. Light spends a massive amount of his time, focusing on his bromance with Ryuk and is comically flippant with Misa.
- Rem has an infatuation with Misa, which began when they were left alone together, when it was Ryuk’s turn to hold a work party at home. We do not know this immediately, but implications are made early on. We frequently see hints of this in Rem’s behavior and surroundings. The walls in her tiny bedroom are painted a ‘blonde’ shade. When sitting in a waiting room, a small child watches awkwardly as she holds a Barbie doll very intently. There is a page of scruffy Misa-esque doodles in her appointment diary. As well as this, we get an array of shy smiles and flickering glances at any attention that the young woman gives her. Unfortunately, however, Misa had immediately noticed a bit of a submissive streak in Rem and begins to use her for physical and emotional tasks. The relationship becomes gradually more uneasy to watch as time goes on and Misa becomes more frustrated with Light’s neglect.
- Kinddara Guivelostain lives in the same flat-block as Rem and Ryuk. She is an extremely thuggish woman (she is human here, of course and quite androgynous), a few years Rem’s junior. She puts on the guise of being a hard party goer, acting and dressing as someone with a reckless and untamed lifestyle. She tells Ryuk many such stories on the landing, while he’s texting Light. In reality, she is a painfully antisocial and insecure basement dweller (she literally lives on the basement floor), who cannot remember the last time she took something as hard as an aspirin, or even opened a porn magazine. For all her talk, she holds less sexuality than Light. She started making up stories that matched those of the idols she looked up to and plastered all over her mouldy walls. Her antagonistic behaviour has gotten her into a lot of scraps which she claims to revel in. She has a huge crush on Rem and she becomes increasingly jealous at Misa’s presence. It is unclear whether Rem notices her flushed appearance, as she claims she was ‘having a wander’ by Rem’s door, fourteen flights up from her own flat when the lift is down. That she wears Misa’s stolen lipstick as eyeshadow. At the end of the story, I think their relationship would be ambiguous.
- I thought it would be pretty funny, if at one point, Rem gets a lift from L, Near and Mello. Mello is far more severely burned here, on the car ride, he is bandaged up from head to toe. It is loosely implied that it was Near’s fault. L, suggests a sing song, as if to lighten the tension in the car and starts to sing ‘Hamburger Lady’ by Throbbing Gristle, in a very soft, monotone voice. Perhaps they would be a one off, creepy group of characters for a uncomfortable non-sequitur.
Well, those were some ideas, which were quite silly. I hope they were enjoyed, nonetheless.

Kinddara Guivelostain
Kinddara Guivelostain is a female Shinigami with a fierce appearance, having a huge fissure on her head and sharp teeth. She enjoys violence but hates excessive thinking. She does not appear in the actual Death Note story, but does appear on the spine of volume twelve. Obata said that, since the final volume release pended, he wanted to create a new Shinigami to appear in the volume.
