i love love love the way you paint back lighting!! do you have any tips/ a step by step for the way you do it?
ended up making a whole painting just to break it down and explain my general process for subjects lit from behind so heres that + a timelapse!
main thing for drawing anything with a strong light source behind is to make the main subject Darker and more desaturated to convey that the light is behind them rather than to their sides (face cant be properly lit if the light is behind). Also making the Main highlight the brightest hue in the image helps to intensify it. I tend to use teeth/eyes as a good comparison point
some people have a tendency to make the sclera white out of habit but darkening that+ the rest of the whites helps the image read as Darker compared to the brighter highlight
more shido's cognitive goro being a creepy horror monster please!!! i wish there'd been more build-up to his presence in the ship, like the occasional pair of red pinprick pupils watching from the shadows, some disjointed footsteps in an otherwise empty room, the player noting a foreboding feeling of being watched, movement disappearing around a corner the second you step foot into a new room, etc etc etc...
he's just suchhh a weird creature. a doppelgänger with twisted ideals and thoughts deeply different from the original’s. who knows what the hell he’ll do? he’s unpredictable!! and a cutie pie :]
found a baby yaku amidst the Sketchbook-glitch-corruption wreckage..... wondering if he flipped skin tones between black and red and everything in between until he saw his to-be-grandparents (and started mimicking THEIR skin tone....... )
Reneta, ranger of the woods! This intimidating dragon has wings fashioned from living wood. Vines and moss drape her frame, and woodland spirits find themselves inexplicably drawn to her...
finally decided to sit down and just fill it all out at once. also i really didn't want to mess with gradients but enough of the combos have a distinct one so i just gave one to each (except common)
So, if Talpians sclera change color depending on the amount of natural light and darkness they're exposed to, what's their normal sclera color? Are they white like a human's or a different color?
They are black, and it takes a long period of exposure to natural light to brighten them to white like Gary's and Rachel's are. Inversely, it also takes a long period of darkness to darken them back to black.
It is why you can find art of Gary's dad & step dad with black sclera, but Gary who spends much of his time near and above the surface (and has lived near the surface for years now), and Rachel who's an oddball talpian that loves daylight (and even has a skylight in her home), both have mostly white sclera. Because the process takes so long, the day/night cycle is not typically enough to make a visible change.
Alex, Chickenstab's host, initially has dark sclera that lighten up when he begins hosting.
Most talpians you see on the surface are likely to have white or light-gray sclera, especially the further away from the dominion you find them, as they rarely rehome underground on new land.
