i’ve seen a bunch of people talking how ignorant/bad darren’s reaction to cash refusing to have sex and later on informing them about his asexuality was, and i agree, it was a shitty response. however it needs to be adressed that darren’s view on sexuality and moreover sex in general stems directly from what they say later in the show - “i think i’m a hard person to love”.
from the first episode we see darren seems to have been slightly neglected by their parents - they lack understanding, diminish the problems and have failed in showing proper love or dedication for their child. darren gets shuffled around between their mom’s house to dad’s like they have to be hidden from their stepdad’s friends when they come over. that conclusively cements the feeling of not being wanted, even by their family.
darren seems to be filling that void with the thing they learned is the easiest way to make them feel wanted, which is sex. it isn’t outright addressed by the show but i don’t believe they have ever had a longterm romantic relation with someone. from what we see darren divides their relationships strictly into platonic (ex. amerie, quinni, for whom they open up more about their feelings) and sexual. at the map their name is amongst the ones that have the most arrows attached, they straightforwardly state that the longest they went without having sex is 2 months. darren had a lot sexual partners and they seem to change them quickly (examples being: their one time with ant, fling with the boy from the private school, hook-up with the guy at amerie’s party), not leaving much room for developing any emotions apart from desire. so when darren tries to seek out more from one of their partners - coming to his dorm, asking for shelter and getting turned down - in their head that’s proof that there is nothing else for them than being desired sexually.
that is why when cash starts showing interest in them they think he only wants to fuck them and when he says he doesn’t want that they think he doesn’t desire them, that he was joking/trying something out at their expense. they feel angry, betrayed that their usual sexual m.o. doesn’t apply here. because darren can’t fathom that they could be truly loved by somebody, wanted without being used to satisfy someone’s libido. and while they certainly really enjoy sex that’s also all that they’ve been reduced to by previous partners.
darren has definitely shown ignorance in regard of asexuality yet the underlying problem is not that they couldn’t have a relationship with cash without sex but that they can’t imagine themself without sex.

people commenting on darren and ca$h’s relationship and completely pinning the blame on darren is fucked. darren clearly isint being pushy out of purely selfish reasons it’s because they literally cannot conceptualize someone valuing them in a partnership outside of sex. To them, they are hard to love and as a consequence they feel as though sex is the only thing they have to offer and value. Thats why they are so pushy towards ca$h about it. Yes, some of their behaviour is aphobic but it’s not coming from a place of willful ignorance it’s coming from a deep rooted fear that without sexual connection they are worthless. Acting as if ca$h is the only one hurt by this is so near sighted and quite frankly just shitty, one sided analysis that pins anger on a character that doesn’t deserve it.

For the past week or so because I haven’t been keeping track of how long Heartbreak High has been on my for you page, but genuinely, is it any good? I want opinions from the fanbase itself 😭
(and yes that’s my own Twitter account)

One thing I really like about Heartbreak high is that, unlike Sex education, all the characters feel like actual friends. Even when someone does a shitty thing and is being cut off from one person, it doesn't mean the others will forget about him/her completely. And no matter what drama they're involved in they will stick together when the shit is real. Idk I just love the whole group dynamic they have, they don't interact only with 2 people, they ALL INTERACT and I think it's beautiful 😭

So I have just finished Heartbreak High (for the first time - I’m already on episode 2 for a rewatch). I have lots of big feelings about Ca$h. I’m a newly out asexual person (in my 30s - thanks highly sexualised society for making me think I was just a prude) who is not also aromantic. Ca$h is one of the most relatable characters I have ever seen. Ever.
A lot of teen and young adult relationships start with lust (or at least are shown to in the media). Watching Ca$h want to be in love with Darren was amazing. It was awkward and messy and Darren got lots of things wrong but it was still so heartwarming. Darren needs to do some learning - fast. But I think they will. And I think the (admittedly awful) things that Darren said are because of the damage that’s been done to them. That’s not to say I think they’re excusable. They’re not, and I’d like to think there’ll be lots of growth and hard work done to repair the damage. But I think Darren said the things they said because they see sex as a measure of how valuable they are. My personal experience is that when asexuality isn't understood well, it’s interpreted as a rejection of your romantic partner. Sex is a really easily interpreted sign of WANTING someone. And in our sexualised society is not easy to see all the other signs of being (or falling) in love.
I loved seeing Ca$h be able to communicate what he needed and wanted (and didn’t want) and Darren hear and understand that (if a little delayed). They made my little asexual heart sing and I will love them forever.
(Now to try and convince my allosexual partner that they should watch it and not get grumpy about all the teen angst that they definitely think they're too old to have to deal with...)

To me, it felt like Darren was trying to communicate with Quinni but was just using the wrong words and doing it at the wrong time.
I agree, I think Darren was feeling really stressed with their issues with Ca$h and just didn't have the mental capacity to be sympathetic to Quinni in that moment. What struck me as a little off from the writers' part is that in s1, Darren knew exactly how to comfort Quinni in times of stress and knew that she can feel insecure about being "too much" so it is weird for me that in s2, Darren does a 180 on that saying indirectly that she is being too much to handle and later on after having some time to process, they still don't apologize nor make any attempt to. I appreciate Quinni apologizing for behaving the way she did because it was a bit of a petty retaliation thing but imo, she deserved an apology too. I can understand that it can be upsetting that despite the constant effort to mask and act accordingly to others' expectations, she still gets told by her closest friend that it isn't enough and so she acts out. I could understand if it was a stranger or an acquaintance but for it to be Darren made it feel like to me they weren't as close as I thought they were.
I hope it's clear though that this doesn't mean I dislike Darren for that or that I think it's a major oversight on the writers' part. These discrepancies happen in real life and no one's perfectly consistent but I'm just trying to make it clear what I think was the right thing for Darren and Quinni to do in this situation. At the end of the day, they're all on their separate journeys and friends fight once in a while. It's completely normal and I'm just glad they were able to resolve that sooner rather than later. <3
