The 70's did look forward as we have seen in our discussions, yet they were also heavily nostalgic as well. The 50's and the early 60's were the rage then, which can be felt in some cases. Showaddywaddy, for example, made their career by basically being a cover band for the period, though they also felt quite close to glam rock of the time thanks to their production choices. Moreover, their presentation harkened to an earlier era, because their lineup resembled, if you squinted, a possible amalgam of jazz groups and rock bands. I mean, I could actually see them having their own variety show with a lot of questionable skits. Additionaly, you kept having a hunch they stiffled their laughter during their concerts and guffawed like crazy after them.

Romeo Challenger of Showaddywaddy had told a ghost story a few weeks earlier in Spellbound. This week (No. 27, cover dated 26 March 1977) it was the turn of lead singer Dave Bartram playing a spooky practical joke on fellow bandmate and singer Bill 'Buddy' Gask (1945-2011). DC Thomson.
The 'Showaddywaddy' name may have come from the lyrics of their debut single - Hey Rock 'n' Roll although some sources claim they took the name from the lyrics of Little Darlin' by The Diamonds. It probably appears in a lot of song as they also sing it toward the end of their cover of Remember Then.

Right. I may not really do attraction in the conventional sense, but I’m sensing a definitive pattern to the faces I find interesting.
The pattern continues basically everywhere*, but I think this is quite enough.
*there are a few other ones, as well, but none quite this oddly specific.
(top left to bottom right, just in case anybody is curious: Juanes*, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, Frida (of ABBA fame), Dave Bartram (whose face is 90% mouth, trying to get a not-hilarious screenshot was A Challenge), Mr. Gold from OUAT, Giovanni Auditore from AssCreed, Sith Dude, and my very own Absalom, mostly to fill out space. Jaime’s originally design would’ve fit the bill, too, but I haven’t drawn that since 2012, so... hell no.)
*the only unconditionally awesome musician out of the four on that list, by the way.
-
Also if you’re wondering what the everloving fuck is going on, it’s past 3 AM and I have an exam later so just... bear with me?

Heading into the final games of the first month of the 2018 season, Columbus Crew SC and Vancouver Whitecaps FC currently find themselves tied atop their respective conferences with Crew SC sharing the lead in the East with NYCFC with 10 points apiece, while the Whitecaps FC and Sporting Kansas City each have seven points to top the West.
Crew SC are one of four remaining undefeated teams in MLS and look to improve to 3-0-0 at MAPFRE Stadium, while Vancouver hope to make it four consecutive wins in Columbus with a second victory away from BC Place.
Columbus Crew SC
Even without regular starters Zack Steffen and Wil Trapp, who were in Dave Sarachan’s USMNT camp, Crew SC didn’t take their foot off the gas in an impressive 3-1 win over D.C. United Saturday afternoon.
Milton Valenzuela, Ricardo Clark and Pedro Santos scored for Columbus, while Federico Higuain joined MLS’ 50-50 club with his 50th assist on Clark’s 40th-minute tally.
Cristian Martinez, who had a pair of assists, Higuain and Valenzuela were each named to the MLS Team of the Week presented by Audi for Week 4.

Yordy Reyna wasn’t able to convert a breakaway in the 39th minute in what was the best scoring chance of a defensive stalemate between the Whitecaps and a depleted LA Galaxy Saturday at BC Place.
What did ‘Caps FC coach Carl Robinson take from the match?
“A point,” he quipped in his post-match press conference.
The best news of the week for the Whitecaps came on the day before the match as central defender Kendall Waston had his red card from a March 17 match Atlanta rescinded, which means the Costa Rican international is available for Saturday’s tilt in Columbus after returning from duty with the Ticos.

By the mid 70’s rock was all of twenty years old, it had travelled from Bill Hayley performing ‘Rock around the Clock’ way past Hawkwind and ‘ Silver Machine’. The 60’s had been very forward looking, every few months there would be something new to marvel at, it was as if there was a scorched earth policy with the past being destroyed as the future became the present.
There were period in the 70’s however when it seemed like we had stretched the fabric of time, as if it could stretch no longer and it seemed like we were going to be sucked back into the 1950’s.The 1950’s for us meant America obviously, no one in their right mind wanted to revisit Wee Willie Harris or even Billy Fury. American Graffiti was an amazingly influential film which left the inhabitants of Croydon or Oldham yearning for a soda pop at the drive in. Even more influential was the TV show Happy Days which provided an even more sanitised version of the American dream. For a while it seemed we knew more about America than we did about our own country as so many of the shows were made there. There were only three channels and we had to watch in real time no wonder we have become so Americanised, we were brainwashed for decades.
Surprisingly Glam was partly backwards looking from Marc Bolan’s 50’s imagery to Roxy Music’s adoption of 40’s and 50’s American glamour. When Mud decided to dress as teddy boys (let’s forget the guitarist ok?) it just seemed normal. Let’s not forget that during this time Malcolm Mclaren was flirting with Teddy boy styles and running a shop catering to those tastes, rock and roll really was here to stay.
The apogee of this yearning for the past was encapsulated by the band Showaddywaddy. Sha Na Na without the bad acid. This weirdest of outfits was formed when two Leicester bands simply joined forces in 1973. This meant that Showaddywaddy had two drummers, two bassists and lots of everything else. This would, of course, prove useful when members started to leave but initially they had more people than was strictly necessary but this enabled members to generally mess around and make the band look more interesting than they were. Like so many other entertainers they initially came through the immensely popular ‘New Faces’ Show. From there on it was domination of middle England for the next few years. Showaddywaddy actually had 10 top ten hits though the mid 70’s. It seemed we couldn’t get enough of versions of old hits which were less good than the originals played by men in a collection of lurid Teddy boy outfits. The band was fronted by Dave Bartram whose mid 70’s haircut marked him out as an unlikely Ted despite his drapes and brothel creepers.
This is them at their very best.
Luckily tastes change and post punk there was no place for Showaddywaddy in the charts although, understandably, they remained a huge popular live act round the clubs, Bartram Hung up his drapes in 2013 but naturally the band are still going although with only two original members still remaining.
Punk, of course was aggressively British, we’d had enough of those yanks with their nice teeth and tanned skin showing off their perfect lifestyles. As well as rock and roll the biggest victim was country rock which had to be put into quarantine for a while.
It was a great loss. We survived but the American dream never seemed quite as perfect again.
By way of a footnote..
Showaddywaddy were an unlikely multiracial band. Romeo Challenger must have had the weirdest career of any black drummer having played in occult heavy metal band Black Widow before a lifelong career with Showaddywaddy.
Hey Rock and Roll By the mid 70’s rock was all of twenty years old, it had travelled from Bill Hayley performing ‘Rock around the Clock’ way past Hawkwind and ‘ Silver Machine’.

A cockle man believed to be the only trader of his kind left in the UK has revealed being beaten up on his rounds inadvertently saved his life.
Dave Bartram, 70, who has toured Nottingham’s pubs on foot for over 50 years, said his ribs were broken during an attempted robbery in early March.
Mr Bartram said he discovered he had early-stage cancer when he visited a doctor about his injuries.
Despite the trauma of the attack, he said the robbers “did him a favour”.
Image caption Father and son filmmakers Matt and Mark Daunt believe Dave Bartram is the only cockle man left in the country
Mr Bartram, who was the subject of a film titled The Cockle Man in 2014, has sold prawns, cockles and mussels for seven days a week since 1964, when he worked for a local fishmonger.
He said he has been attacked a number of times over the years, some of which he fended off with his basket.
In the latest attack, he said two thieves tried to steal his collection tin for a children’s charity in a back street in Nottingham city centre.
It was only after later being examined by a doctor, he discovered he had cancer.
“It’s serious, but not that serious, they’ve got it [the cancer] early, I don’t need chemo,” he said.
“[The robbers] have done me a favour.”

The attack has left him contemplating retirement.
But Mr Bartram defiantly said: “It crossed my mind, but why should I? I had two days off and the phone kept ringing.
“People love me in Nottingham. I want to carry on, I don’t want to be sitting at home, I want to be mixing with people.
He said he has “struggled” on but has cut down his hours due to the pain from his ribs.
Mr Bartram has not yet reported the attack to police.

Nottingham's veteran cockle man has pledged to keep up his nightly seafood basket pub tour – in spite of a mugging which led to a hospital appointment and a shock cancer diagnosis. "I'll try to carry on because if I'm not there in the evenings, people phone up and ask what the problem is," says Dave Bartram, 70, who in his white trilby and coat has been selling shellfish in Nottingham pubs for more than half a century.
