On Davey
Tumblr media
Yesterday, the Calaveras County authorities have recovered the body of automotive writer Davey G. Johnson who had been missing for a couple of weeks in California wilderness. It brings closure to a number of us in the automotive media space who have been keeping him in our thoughts.
The piece you are about to read was something I wrote on my Facebook Monday night when news came out that the authorities were reducing their search efforts, leading many to believe that he was gone. This is coming from the perspective of someone who never met Davey, yet was impacted in various ways with his writing.
I would like to extend my condolences to Davey’s friends, family, and colleagues.
It was the news that many of us were hoping wouldn't come to fruition, but the search for automotive writer Davey G. Johnson has to come a close. He had been missing for more than a week in the California wilderness.
This feels odd to be writing about since I never met Davey, let alone interact with him in some form. Yet, I feel quite sad knowing that I will never have that chance. It feels odd to have these feelings and thoughts about someone who you never have met - I'm sure there is a word or phrase that describes this.
But someone pointed out that those who write about vehicles are part of a small and exclusive group. We range from those who do it on the side and somehow still shocked that we're allowed to drive a vehicle from a manufacturer, to those who are able to make a living.
This group of people is kind of like high school with different cliques, a fair amount of drama and gossip; and that feeling of why you're here in the first place. But being in this group does give you some amazing opportunities and chance to meet interesting characters like Davey.
Since the news of his disappearance came out, this community has come out strong with spreading the news, raising money to help in the search efforts, and trying to keep this person in our thoughts by posting stories.
I do have a story that relates to Davey. Around this time last year, I lost my Uncle Jim to cancer. It was a difficult time for me as I was dealing with personal issues and having this added only made things bleaker. During the visitation, I stepped out a few moments and pulled my phone out. There is a list of quotes I keep on there that I look at from time to time to provide some light. One of these quotes is this,
"But permanence of any sort is a mere illusion; such are the fickle shifts of the universe. We get a finite, uncertain shot in life, and if we’re gifted and lucky, we’ll inspire a few people along the way."
That was Davey on the passing of Brock Yates back in 2016. I used that quote when I talked about my uncle's passing last year because it beautifully summed up the type of person he was, and someone I hope that I can strive towards.
I don't know what or how Davey would react if someone to tell him this story.
I do think this does show that sometimes, a stranger or someone you barely know can leave a big impact.
Sorry for the long post, but I felt I needed to get this all out. Having this sit in the back of my head for the past couple of weeks, along with hoping for a safe return does drain you.
May you rest in peace Davey.

1968 Alfa Romeo Carabo Concept Promised the Future (Part 1 of 2)
All that's left are scissor doors.
DEC 3, 2015 BY DAVEY G. JOHNSON
Since the dawn of the automobile—or at the very least, the birth of the Curved Dash Oldsmobile in 1901—the industry has drifted toward non-rectilinear shapes. Even the phone-booth-upright Ford Model T featured as many round forms as Henry Ford deemed financially prudent. For those of us born in the 1970s, the angular machines we grew up with seemed normal and modern; anything curvaceous was obviously archaic. A Ferrari 330GTS may as well have been an MGA, which could’ve been a Cord, for all we cared. Only survivors like the Beetle, 911, Mini, and the Fiat 124/Pininfarina Azzurra definitively bucked the trend, and they were recognizably vehicles that had sallied forth from an earlier time, vehicles who somehow beat back all attempts at replacement. Looking back now, it’s easy to see that the straight-edge styling of the 1970s and 1980s was merely a blip, an aberration. But if that strange period has roots anywhere, they’re right here, in the form of the Alfa Romeo Carabo from 1968.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Gandini had conceived of the wedge shape as a way to combat the Miura’s tendency to raise its front end at speed. But at a time when Europe was undergoing upheaval—the Paris uprisings of May ’68, Soviet tanks rolling into Czechoslovakia, Andreas Baader’s early arson escapade in Germany, and tensions in Northern Ireland, to name but a few episodes in that turbulent year—why notstart with a clean sheet that looked toward the future? Even if it wasn’t Gandini’s intent, the car’s straight, stern lines offered a respite from chaos, while the beetle-green paint imbued it with a sense of otherworldly playfulness.
While the underpinnings were merely a refinement of what had come before, including a screaming 2.0-liter V-8 fed by SPICA mechanical fuel injection and nestled behind the cabin in a tube chassis, the exterior broke almost wholly with convention. Rather than a collection of forms, the Carabo was a single, hewn mass. Like the new 1968 Corvette and the Opel GT, the Alfa featured pop-up headlights. Unlike the swoopy General Motors products, the Carabo’s rose out of a practically-flat front panel. The doors swung upward, allowing ingress over the thick sills in tight spaces. Gandini would later reuse the idea for the Miura’s replacement, the mighty Countach, a car that outwardly seemed to have more in common with the Alfa Romeo than its own predecessor.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sports and concept-car designers immediately took note. Nuccio Bertone, Gandini’s employer, put pen to paper and came up with the radical Stratos 0 (or Zero) concept. Pininfarina put its own space-age twist on the idea with the Ferrari 512S–based Modulo, now owned by Jim Glickenhaus. William Towns applied the precepts to a luxury sedan, resulting in the wonderful, complex Aston Martin Lagonda. Essentially, Europe had gone wedge-crazy. Even conservative Ferrari recruited Bertone to pen the successor to the Dino 246GT, the underrated 308GT4, then promptly returned to Pininfarina for their entry-level car’s stunning two-seat variants. Still, the famed concern’s Leonardo Fioravanti had clearly been nipping at the geometric Kool-Aid when he penned the 1972 365GT4 2+2, which later evolved into the 400 and the 412.
While Giorgetto Giugiaro was no stranger to high-powered sporting machines, having designed the lovely, troubled De Tomaso Mangusta during his tenure at Ghia, he truly made his mark on the industry with the first iteration of Volkswagen’s Golf and its more-sporting sibling, the Scirocco, which applied the Carabo’s strict lines in a more friendly, approachable form, setting a template that would influence every hatchback from the very-European Ford Fiesta to the bog-American Chevy Citation.

The Unabridged History of the Daveycaster
The Unabridged History of the Daveycaster
I’m in this band with my daft paragon cohort George. An internet band. That doesn’t make or play any music. It’s a fake band. A fake internet band.
This began when George and IG friend @goats_and_motorcycles were chatting about the RigsOfDad account and it auto-corrected to RodsOfDad. As one does in these situations, “new band name” was called out. And it stuck.
Eventually I joined. And…

A Tesla Truckla, Robotic Pizza Delivery, and More Car News This Week
Over here at WIRED Transportation, we often talk to and write about people doing big, ambitious things—changing how their local transportation systems work, inventing new technologies, or researching why the world travels the way it does. But we also talk to the tinkerers, the people working on cool projects on the edges. Sometimes that’s more fun. This week, we learned how a dedicated DIY-er DIY-ed a Tesla pickup truck (a “Truckla”), why a robotics company is suddenly very interested in pizza, and how you might top a 22,000-mile trip around the world on a solar-powered plane.
Plus, we learned why Tesla is working on videogames and which country builds the most reliable cars, according to a new survey. It’s been a week; let’s get you caught up.
Headlines
Stories you might have missed from WIRED this week
The autonomous-delivery startup Nuro has a new assignment: delivering pizzas in Arizona. (A “chase vehicle” will follow the robot on wheels to make sure it doesn’t do something naughty—or get its Dominos pizza swiped.)
Tesla devised a new way to pass the 20 or so minutes it takes to “top off” your car battery: an in-car videogame, which you can play with your actual steering wheel.
A prolific YouTuber and reigning queen of “shitty robots” got tired of waiting for Tesla’s electric cyberpunk truck—so she made one herself.
Waymo signs international deals with Nissan and Renault—but don’t expect to see self-driving Google cars in France or Japan just yet.
One of the guys who flew around the world in a solar-powered airplane is back with a new electric flying machine. It can climb 900 feet per minute, cruise at 125 mph, and stay aloft for 90 minutes on a charge.
The unmanned US drone that Iran shot down this week had a wingspan of more than 130 feet, a maximum takeoff weight of more than 16 tons, and a range exceeding 12,000 nautical miles.
A new vehicle-quality survey finds that Korean cars—not American, German, or Japanese ones—are the most reliable.

The number of shared scooters in Nashville, should the city’s mayor get his way. On Friday, Mayor David Briley requested the Metro Council nix the city’s scooter pilot program because of his concerns relating to “visual clutter, improper riding, parking violations and poor rider education.” A vehicle struck and killed a man riding a scooter in the city in May. Briley says he would consider allowing two of the seven companies that currently operate in the city to return after a new permitting process.

We’ll Miss You, Davey G. Johnson
It is with deepest sadness that we report the passing of Davey G. Johnson, our friend and colleague who went missing Wednesday, June 5. After an exhaustive search that lasted nearly two weeks, Davey’s body was found in the Mokelumne River, two miles from where he disappeared. The cause of death is believed to be accidental drowning.
Davey was riding home to Sacramento the night of Tuesday, June 4, along the Sonora Pass in California (Rt 108 to Rt 49). He was last heard from the next morning. Police from Calaveras County and Amador County began search and rescue operations on Saturday, when the Honda CB1000R he was riding was found in good condition at a rest stop off Rt 49 near Mokelumne Hill. His clothing, backpack, cell phone, and laptop were found near the river, and later his wallet was also recovered. Detectives believe he fell into the river, which is running deeper and faster than normal for this time of year due to snow runoff from the Sierras.
David Gordon Johnson was 43 years old, and devoted more than half his life to writing about cars and motorcycles. He was a master of his craft who could weave complex and often disparate themes into his stories—and they would always work. Davey had many friends at MotorTrend, but even those of us who didn’t know him well held him in the highest esteem. He was a giant in the automotive writing business, and his byline will be sorely missed. But far more than that we’ll miss the man himself, a kind, friendly soul whose passion for cars, bikes, travel, music, and writing could hardly be contained.
We’re extremely grateful for the updates provided by Abigail Bassett over the last two weeks. Her posts, as hard as they must have been to write about a close friend, kept us informed about the search and rescue effort and eventually gave us closure with the final update that he’d been found. Our condolences go out to Davey’s girlfriend, Jaclyn, and his family. To all who knew and loved Davey, we are tremendously sorry for your loss.

FINAL UPDATE: 8:30 PM PT June 20, 2019 It absolutely breaks my heart to be the bearer of this news. The Calaveras County authorities called Jaclyn this evening to notify her that they have recovered Davey's body. He was found in the river.  She has asked me to share the news. We are immeasurably appreciative of the efforts of the Calaveras County Search and Rescue Teams, the Calaveras County Sheriff’s department, and the numerous teams from all over the state, that have been involved in the effort to bring Davey home. At this time we ask that the privacy of his family and his friends be respected. We will share more information as it becomes available. Memorial details will be determined by the family and announced at a later date. Thank you so much for your support and understanding.
