CECIL McBEE, MAITRE DE LA CONTREBASSE

Né le 19 mai 1935 à Tulsa, en Oklahoma, Cecil McBee a d’abord étudié la clarinette à l’école et s’était produit avec plusieurs groupes scolaires. Avec sa soeur Shirley, McBee était devenu une grande vedette locale en se produisant dans des duos de clarinette à travers l’État. McBee était passé à la contrebasse à l’âge de dix-sept ans et s’était rapidement produit dans des clubs locaux de jazz et de rhythm & blues.

En raison de sa virtuosité comme clarinettiste, McBee s’était mérité une bourse pour étudier à la Central State University de Wilberforce, en Ohio, mais ses études avaient été interrompues lorsqu’il avait été mobilisé dans l’armée. Comme militaire, McBee avait dirigé durant deux ans le “158th Band” de la base de Fort Knox, au Kentucky. Lors de son séjour dans l’armée, McBee en avait profité pour étudier la composition et l’improvisation.

Une fois démobilisé, McBee avait repris ses études à l’Ohio State University, où il avait obtenu un baccalauréat en musique. McBee, qui avait d’abord eu l’intention de devenir professeur, avait réalisé après avoir obtenu son diplôme qu’il était davantage intéressé par une carrière de musicien de jazz.

Après avoir accompagné la chanteuse Dinah Washington en 1959, McBee s’était installé à Detroit trois ans plus tard, où il avait travaillé avec le sextet de Paul Winter de 1963 à 1964. Dès son arrivée à New York en 1964, McBee était devenu un des contrebassistes les plus en demande du monde du jazz, enregistrant et voyageant autour du monde avec des sommités comme Charles Lloyd, Pharoah Sanders, Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, Miles Davis, Bobby Hutcherson, Keith Jarrett, Wayne Shorter (1965-1966), Freddie Hubbard, Sonny Rollins, Joe Henderson, Andrew Hill, Sam Rivers, Michael White, Jackie McLean (1964), Yusef Lateef (1967–1969), Alice Coltrane, Ravi Coltrane, Abdullah Ibrahim, Lonnie Liston Smith, Buddy Tate, Joanne Brackeen, Dinah Washington, Benny Goodman, George Benson, Nancy Wilson, Betty Carter, Art Pepper, Pharoah Sanders, Dave Liebman, Joe Lovano, Billy Hart, Eddie Henderson, Yosuke Yamashita, Billy Harper et Geri Allen.

En 1966, McBee s’était joint au groupe du saxophoniste Charles Lloyd aux côtés de Keith Jarrett et Jack DeJohnette. Il avait ensuite enregistré et fait des tournées avec des grands noms du jazz comme Miles Davis, Yusef Lateef, Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Freddie Hubbard, Woody Shaw, Alice Coltrane (1969-72), McCoy Tyner, Mal Waldron, Kenny Barron, Joanne Brackeen, Abdullah Ibrahim, Art Pepper, Anthony Braxton, Elvin Jones, Clifford Jordan, Chet Baker et Johnny Griffin. Au cours de cette période, McBee avait aussi enregistré sept albums comme leader de ses propres groupes. En 1986, McBee avait également joué avec Freddie Hubbard et Woody Shaw.

En 1988, McBee avait participé à un album-hommage à John Coltrane intitulé ‘’Blues for Coltrane’’, dans le cadre d’un sextet qui comprenait Pharoah Sanders, McCoy Tyner, David Murray, McCoy Tyner et Roy Haynes. L’album s’était d’ailleurs mérité un prix Grammy dans la catégorie de la meilleure performance instrumentale par un individu ou un groupe. Dans le cadre de ses enregistrements et de ses tournées, McBee, qui avait obtenu deux bourses de la National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), avait également interprété ses propres compositions. L’album de Charles Lloyd ‘’Forest Flower’’ (1966) comprenait d’ailleurs une ballade de McBee intitulée “Song of Her” qui était devenue un standard du jazz. Plusieurs des compositions de McBee avaient aussi été enregistrées par d’autres musiciens, dont Elvin Jones, McCoy Tyner, Pharoah Sanders et plusieurs autres. Parmi les plus célèbres compositions de McBee, on remarquait “Wilpan’s”, “Peacemaker”, “Slippin’n Slidin’”, “Blues on the Bottom”, “Consequence” et “Close to You Alone.”

Avec le batteur Billy Hart, McBee avait également formé le noyau de la section rythmique de deux groupes majeurs, Saxophone Summit et The Cookers, dans lesquels il avait interprété plusieurs autres de ses compositions. Dans les années 2000, McBee a poursuivi avec succès une compagnie japonaise qui avait ouvert une chaîne de magasins sous son nom sans son autorisation.

Également professeur, McBee avait donné des cours privés et enseigné durant près de quatre décennies dans différents collèges et universités renommés, dont le New England Conservatory de Boston où il avait enseigné durant plus de vingt-cinq ans. McBee avait aussi occupé un poste d’artiste en résidence à l’Université Harvard de 2010 à 2011. Durant cette période, McBee en avait profité pour améliorer ses techniques d’enseignement et travaillé sur un manuel d’instruction novateur pour la contrebasse. Caractérisée par son approche révolutionnaire, la méthode de McBee pouvait également être appliquée aux méthodes d’improvisation de plusieurs autres catégories d’instruments. Reconnu pour sa virtuosité et son style très personnel, McBee a été intronisé en 1991 au sein du Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame.

Compositeur émérite, McBee a participé à des centaines d’enregistrements au cours de sa carrière.

Sabretooth and Wolverine with the same mutant teen, who happens to be a feral mutant like them, but isn't interested in joining the X-Men, Brotherhood, or Acolytes.

Scourge the Hedgehog and Fiona Fox romantic team-up. Maybe the reader is good friends with Sonic and helps out with the freedom fighters. So that’s how Fiona gets close with them, and Scourge at first wanted to “take” reader because they had a close relationship with Sonic. But soon, he started becoming Yan for them, too, like Fiona, so inevitably, they team up to take reader for themselves or try to sway them away from Sonic.

Spear and Fang with a feisty neanderthal who doesn't seem to notice how small they are and tries to fight the two (Primal).

Wilson and the reader come into The Constant at the same time, work together to get out, and the reader ends up making it to Maxwell first. After working together so much, Wilson is willing to try anything so they'll be freed (Don't Starve).

Wolf! Reader is best friends with the Penguins of Madagascar and follows them everywhere in the events of the movie, but now they caught Dave’s eye so they have to stop him from kidnapping and following her and destroying all penguins.

Wood Scouts minus Jermy with a reader who's not supposed to be a scout and is the opposite of what the tough, outdoorsy boys should be (Camp Camp).

Zane (Ninjago).

Zenitsu pursues a reader in hopes they’d get him out of the Demon Slayer Corporation (Kimetsu no Yaiba).

The Big Ones:

A new animator for Warner bros comes in to work. They noticed the Warner sibling acting zany to the max and decided to doodle them one day. Once they finished their doodles of the Warner sibs, they went to buy a drink but left it on a table outside on accident. The Warner sibs see it and are amazed by it. But they are unknown to who is the artist behind these amazing drawings. The animator goes back to collect their sketchbook after getting their drink, of course, before the Warner sibs hide discreetly to see who the artist is. The animator sighs in relief to see that their sketchbook is back in their own hands. They quickly go back to their department before their lunch ends. The Warner siblings soon find their interest piqued in this animator, so they go to see them, but the animator has no clue on who “the Animaniacs” are because they were born after their show ended. They become good friends. Instead of scowling and getting mad at their jokes, they simply laugh and are patient with them. Eventually, one day, Pinky and Brain make a portal gun where if they shoot someone, they will be teleported to another timeline. The Animaniacs find this portal gun and start to shoot everywhere for fun and accidentally shoot their animator friend. They are distraught and ask Pinky and Brain for help. Animator friend gets teleported to Animaniacs 1993, in the year 1995. They take the role of temp nurse with Hello Nurse and Dr Scratch n sniff. Of course, finding Pinky and Brain to help them go back to their world (2024). From their animator friend disguised as temp nurse, meets the Warner siblings and start their friendship all over again except in the year 1995. The animator friend always laughed when the Warner brothers say “Hello nurse” and dot replying, “It’s hard to be the strong one.” Always greeting them with a hello and how are you. Animator friend even stuck up for them when the ceo and Dr Scratch n sniff was talking smack about them. Eventually, The Brain managed to find a way for the reader to go back home. The Warner sibs were sad, and that’s when animator friend told them that they were from the future and that they were friends in that timeline and that they will return but instead they will work there as a different profession. Animator friend returns, and all is back to normal. The Warner sibs don’t realize that animator friends and temp nurses are the same person. So after the day animator friend went back to their timeline, the animation department got egg-bombed, and all their equipment had stayed in the department, so all the animators had to take temporary jobs in the studio. Animator got the nurse job again, dr scratch n sniff recognizes animation friend (he knew it was animation friend disguised as temp nurse because they needed a disquise to stay in the studio so brain can get the portal gun ready to send friend home. Brain explained to scratch n sniff, and the 3 of them were a team temporarily). And since the Hello Nurse was away on vacation, Dr. Scratch n sniff needed the help. The Warner sibs decided to pay a visit to Dr Scratch n sniff and unknowingly see temp nurse (animation friend). They were ready to cry and jump on animation friend, saying how much they’ve missed them. Dr Scratch n sniff is confused going “guys it animator friend you just saw them 15 min ago”. That’s when they connected the dots and were like “what!” During the next 3 weeks, they were attached to animator friend like glue.

Riddler and Batman rivalry, with Riddler's obsession being more romantic and Batman's being more platonic (BTAS).

You used to work with Edward back at Competitron, helping out with the game a little bit (possible romantic tension between the two of you), but distanced yourself after the whole 'Trying to kill Mockridge' thing. Batman, at one point, had come around to ask you questions about him and your employer. After Edward got sent to Arkham, maybe you were writing to him, hoping he could get better, but really not visiting him, maybe just intimidated by the place or too scared to see fully what he's become.

Batman checks up with you frequently, making sure you're not too disheartened by Edward becoming the Riddler, along with helping you move on. Later, when Riddler gets trapped in virtual reality, it's the first time you really visit him, and you really start waiting for him to wake up — Batman is there of course, because he really doesn't like the idea of leaving you alone with him, coma-like state or not.

Eventually, when Riddler comes back, you help him get used to being back in his body — physical therapy and whatnot — helping him be on good behaviour — leading up to him being on parole.

Finally, Riddler's free, the Wacko Toys deal is going great, and he actually has the connection with you he lost long ago. Things couldn't be better! Until Batman comes in, knowing he isn't reformed at all. You fight against the idea, because why wouldn't you? You believed in Edward, and you hope that eventually Batman sees it, too.

Finally, the Wacko Toys party. Riddler and you are actually having the time of your lives — catching up, playful flirtation, all the fun stuff. Then Batman comes in again, telling Riddler in a one-on-one that he knows he 'can't help himself,' and how long does he 'plan on lying to you?'

𝐓𝐫𝐢𝐩𝐥𝐞 𝐒 (Sonic, Shadow and Silver) 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐚 r𝐞𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐰𝐢𝐭𝐡 𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐩𝐨𝐰𝐞𝐫s who hibernates. 𝐒𝐨𝐦𝐞 𝐚𝐧𝐢𝐦𝐚𝐥𝐬/𝐌𝐨𝐛𝐢𝐚𝐧𝐬 𝐬𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐡𝐢𝐛𝐞𝐫𝐧𝐚𝐭𝐞, 𝐚𝐧𝐝 the 𝐫��𝐚𝐝𝐞𝐫 𝐝𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐨𝐟𝐭𝐞𝐧. T𝐡𝐞 𝐨𝐧𝐥𝐲 𝐭𝐢𝐦𝐞 𝐭𝐡𝐞𝐲 𝐰𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐮𝐩 𝐢𝐬 𝐰𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐢𝐭'𝐬 𝐰𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐞𝐫/𝐜𝐨𝐥𝐝. Aging ~ Land Trance - Embassy Nocturnes

Embassy Nocturnes is the debut collaboration between Manchester-based Aging and Liverpool-based duo Land Trance. Aging, led by seasoned multi-instrumentalist and Tombed Visions label owner David McLean, utilises the traditional jazz quintet to evoke the iconography of film noir and hard-boiled detective fiction, creating a proudly specific genre music for night-time consumption. Specialising in spacious, nocturnal improvisation and ballad heavy melodies present on releases such as 'Suitable for Night', 'Troubles? I got a bartender' and 2020's beautifully arranged LP 'Sentenced To Love', the band continue to conjure a deeply cinematic trip through the shadowy metropolises and rain soaked streets of classic 20th century crime stories. Land Trance is the duo of Benjamin D. Duvall and Andrew PM Hunt, both active practitioners in the UK experimental music scene since the mid-2000s. The former as founder and creative director of prepared guitar ensemble Ex-Easter Island Head, the latter as leader of art pop group Outfit and more recently as a prolific composer and solo performer under his Dialect alias, with 2021's 'Under ~ Between' on RVNG Intl garnering significant critical acclaim for its idiosyncratic blending of electronic and acoustic textures. As Land Trance, the duo make an ecstatic, ecclesiastical form of psychedelic music rich in improvisation, instrumental colour and found sounds to create an elusive sense of place and memory. Their debut First Séance was voted 14th in The Quietus' best albums of 2020, with a vinyl reissue by Rocket recordings released in June 2021. Embassy Nocturnes was recorded in the expansive basement of Liverpool's former Brazilian embassy. The nine evocatively titled pieces that make up the album act as their own distinct scenes, suggesting the labyrinthine atmosphere of the empty ballroom, the secret compartment and the damaged-beyond-repair reel of 8mm film marked “1968” discovered therein. Throughout, synthesisers glow and arc like approaching lights in the driveway; piano chords hang like cut-glass chandeliers. Echoes of quartet recitals for long gone dignitaries permeate the brass and bowed strings, electric guitar and tenor saxophone wreathed in red velvet and cigar smoke. Elsewhere, pulsing machine rhythms and oscillating electronics evoke a passengers eye view of some neon expanse at cruising speed, with Joel C. Murray's agile and propulsive drum-work fluttering and hissing around the arrangements like steam valves opening and closing. Pealing, mournful trumpet bookends the album like a ghostly echo from the lower floors whilst other elements – dictaphone, bamboo marimba, plucked zither – weave through the pieces as enigmatic objects in an unknown narrative. Embassy Nocturnes is a bold first meeting of musical voices, united through their commitment to creating a distinctive sense of place within their work. With group improvisation being sculpted into adventurous forms through extensive post-production and instrumental arrangement, the music blurs the edges of each artists’ distinctive musical vocabularies to create a vivid, mysterious collection of instrumentals rendered with cinematic richness.
