I’m not the biggest fan of musical movies, if it’s too fluffy and too peppy I tend to lose interest. I’m not sure if I would call Cabaret fluffy or peppy, but I can’t say I loved every minute of it either. It’s good, no doubt about that, but just not my thing I suppose. Can’t quite put my finger on it. Good to have seen once, doubt I’ll ever watch it again. A Statement from Christian Ethicists Without Borders on White Supremacy and Racism

August 14, 2017

As followers of Jesus Christ and as Christian ethicists representing a range of denominations and schools of thought, we stand in resolute agreement in firmly condemning racist, anti-Semitic, anti-Muslim, and neo-Nazi ideology as a sin against God that divides the human family created in God’s image.

In January of 2017, white nationalist groups emboldened by the 2016 election planned an armed march against the Jews of Whitefish, Montana. On August 11th and 12th, hundreds of armed neo-Nazis marched in Charlottesville, Virginia. As we mourn the deaths of 32-year old counter-protester Heather Heyer and state troopers H. Jay Cullen and Berke Bates from this most recent incident, we unequivocally denounce racist speech and actions against people of any race, religion, or national origin.

White supremacy and racism deny the dignity of each human being revealed through the Incarnation. The evil of white supremacy and racism must be brought face-to-face before the figure of Jesus Christ, who cannot be confined to any one culture or nationality. Through faith we proclaim that God the Creator is the origin of all human persons. In the words of Frederick Douglass, “Between the Christianity of this land and the Christianity of Christ, I recognize the widest possible difference.”

The greatest commandments, as Jesus taught and exemplified, are to love God and to love our neighbor as ourselves; and so as children of God, and sisters and brothers to all, we hold the following:

We reject racism and anti-Semitism, which are radical evils that Christianity must actively resist.

We reject the sinful white supremacy at the heart of the “Alt Right” movement as Christian heresy.

We reject the idolatrous notion of a national god. God cannot be reduced to “America’s god.”

We reject the “America First” doctrine, which is a pernicious and idolatrous error. It foolishly asks Americans to replace the worship of God with the worship of the nation, poisons both our religious traditions and virtuous American patriotism, and isolates this country from the community of nations. Such nationalism erodes our civic and religious life, and fuels xenophobic and racist attacks against immigrants and religious minorities, including our Jewish and Muslim neighbors.

We confess that all human beings possess God-given dignity and are members of one human family, regardless of race, ethnicity, religion, or country of origin.

We proclaim that the gospel of Jesus Christ has social and political implications. Those who claim salvation in Jesus Christ, therefore, must publicly name evil, actively resist it, and demonstrate a world of harmony and justice in the midst of racial, religious and indeed all forms of human diversity.

Therefore, we call upon leaders of every Christian denomination, especially pastors, to condemn white supremacy, white nationalism, and racism.

Contemplate and respect the image of God imprinted on each human being.

Work across religious traditions to reflect on the ways we have been complicit in upholding and benefiting from the sins of racism and white supremacy.

Pray for the strength and courage to stand emphatically against racism, white supremacy, and nationalism in all its forms.

Participate in acts of peaceful protest, including rallies, marches, and at times, even civil disobedience. Do not remain passive bystanders in the face of the heresies of racism, white supremacy, and white nationalism.

Engage in political action to oppose structural racism.

We will bring the best of our traditions to an ecclesial and societal examination of conscience where rhetoric and acts of hatred against particular groups can be publicly named as grave sins and injustices.

Finally, as ethicists, we commit—through our teaching, writing, and service—to the ongoing, hard work of building bridges and restoring wholeness where racist and xenophobic ideologies have brought brokenness and pain.

In Thomas Mann's The Magic Mountain, a young German engineer, recuperating in a tuberculosis sanatorium in the Swiss Alps, decides to read up on physiology. He concludes that life itself is a kind of disease, "a fever of matter." In Cabaret, Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli) proclaims that "life is a cabaret, old chum." Yet given that the cabaret presided over by the Master of Ceremonies (Joel Grey) in the film is a febrile sort of place, there's a coherence between the two views. Director Bob Fosse would himself go on to posit a relationship between illness and creativity in All That Jazz (1979). And Sally Bowles's favorite phrase, the seeming oxymoron "divine decadence," suggests that out of decay comes something higher. What would be the opposite, after all: satanic order? In perhaps the movie's most chilling moment, Fosse gives us a closeup of a cherubic, well-scrubbed young face, the very opposite of the Master of Ceremonies's rouged and lipsticked face that  has dominated the film from the very beginning. The boy then begins to sing "Tomorrow Belongs to Me," and as the camera pulls back we see that he is wearing the uniform of the Hitler Youth. As the crowd at the open-air beer garden, which has to this point seemed an idyllic setting, joins in and begins to raise their arms in the Nazi salute, we view the very definition of satanic order. But enough German dialectics. Cabaret is one of the great movie musicals. As a rule, I prefer musicals created originally for the movies, like the Warner Bros. films with the kaleidoscopic routines of Busby Berkeley, the Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers movies, or the sublime Singin' in the Rain (Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly, 1952), and not musicals like West Side Story (Jerome Robbins and Robert Wise, 1961; Steven Spielberg, 2021) or My Fair Lady (George Cukor, 1964), that were translated to film from the stage. My admiration for Cabaret would seem to be an exception to that rule, except that when Fosse became director, he jettisoned the book that had been written by Joe Masteroff for the 1966 Broadway musical and went back to the source, Christopher Isherwood's 1939 The Berlin Stories. Jay Presson Allen had been commissioned to write the screenplay, but Hugh Wheeler (credited as "research consultant") heavily revised what she had written. Fosse also dropped many of the songs by John Kander and Fred Ebb, though he added new ones by them: "Money, Money" and "Mein Herr," along with one of their older songs not from the Broadway version, "Maybe This Time." And he made the significant decision to keep the musical numbers, except for the aforementioned “Tomorrow Belongs to Me,” confined to the Kit Kat Klub stage -- a touch of cinematic realism that seems essential to a story set in Berlin during the rise of the Nazis. The result is a musical essentially created (or at least re-created) for the movies. It received 10 Oscar nominations and won eight of them, including awards for Minnelli, Grey, and Fosse, as well as for Geoffrey Unsworth's cinematography. The only categories in which it lost were best picture and best adapted screenplay, which went to The Godfather and its screenwriters, Mario Puzo and Francis Ford Coppola.

Walk into an old house and someone is bound to say “Oh, if only these walls could talk”. So much happens over the course of the lifetime in a house that there are always going to be stories and secrets hidden in its history. This is probably even truer if the same family has inhabited that property for half a century or more. Thus then, we have the backdrop for Kevin Elyot’s final play, Twilight Song which is receiving its world premiere at the Park Theatre.

In a North London Victorian Villa, the owner Barry (Paul Higgins) is showing a local estate agent Skinner (Adam Garcia) around. Barry has recently retired and is looking at getting a valuation whilst his mother Isabella (Bryony Hannah) is at an appointment in Dunstable. The two men chat and discuss the financial state of the world and, particularly Skinner’s rather unusual way of making a bit of extra money. A method that appeals to Barry, a lot.

We now go back to 1961 and Isabella along with husband Basil (Paul Higgins) have just moved into the house, thanks in no small part to uncle Charles (Hugh Ross) who has helped with the necessary readies. The three of them are going out for dinner tonight along with family friend Harry (Philip Bretherton). As they are getting ready, they admire the work being done outside by the handsome gardener (Adam Garcia) Harry found for them. Whilst Isabella and Basil go to finish getting their things on, Charles and Harry talk in the sitting room. They are obviously old friends who have shared many things together over the years. The friendship is, however, getting strained and Charles doesn’t really understand why. Could it be Harry’s son Monty, or is it the influence of something more sinister that has caused the dynamic to change?

Forward now to 1967 and a pregnant Isabella has just broken some unexpected news to her husband. Isabella is waiting for a reaction from Basil but none is forthcoming when the doorbell rings and Charles comes in. He too has upsetting news and is seeking solace from Isabella, and the two of them hug as they try to make sense of their lives.

I do quite like time travel plays, where you start with now and then go back to see how you got to that point. In that respect, Twilight Song works very well, as we see how a gardener hearing a nightingale in 1961 changes the course of everyone’s life and still has repercussions over fifty years later. There is a lot of laughter, particularly in the first scene with Barry and Skinner, and a great deal of innuendo and subtext throughout the writing which means the audience have to be concentrating throughout the roughly 75 minutes run. However, I did find much of the conversation to be rather stilted in a rather old fashioned British way reminiscent of a 1950s Ealing Studios melodrama. This was fine in the scenes set in the sixties when I assume the English middle classes still talked in that fashion but didn’t feel quite right in the ‘modern day’ scenes.

The cast were really good throughout and I was very impressed with Bryony Hannah as Isabella who changed both physically and vocally between 1961 and now. James Cotterill’s set worked nicely and Director Anthony Banks kept things moving, with the scene changes being accompanied by some great music. Actually, on sound Ben and Max Ringham should be applauded for not only getting strange sounds – like the fridge on the fritz – right, but also in the right place in the theatre, no mean feat.

Overall, though I found I didn’t really connect with any of the characters. Everyone’s experience of life is difference but as a formerly extremely well closeted gay man myself, I didn’t really find the various gay men that believable I’m afraid. The overall story was interesting from a historical perspective but it just wasn’t my thing. I’ve not seen any of Kevin Elyot’s other plays so can’t really say if this is a good example of his writing or not. For me, overall it didn’t work but if you are a fan of of the writer, then Twilight Song should really be on your list to go and see.
