Fuck, Oppenheimer is intense.
I mean, it’s no surprise, given it’s subject matter...but there are several scenes that have nothing to do with the actual bomb itself that are so gripping, I was hanging on every word.
While the movie is three hours long, it doesn’t feel like (except when we were getting close to the end, but that’s because it’s tough to sit in one position for that long)...the pacing it very fast...and since I don’t know much about this period of history, I really had to pay attention, because there is a lot of information being given by so many characters. I think this might be why they chose to cast so many known actors for characters who only appear in two or three scenes. The cast is mostly male, and in the 1940′s, guys tended to look alike...similar haircuts, always wearing suits, etc. It can make it tough to distinguish one character from another...but if you see an actor onscreen and go “hey, it’s Rami Malek!” or ”I didn’t know Tony Goldwyn was in this movie!” it will help you remember who everyone is.
But seriously, the cast list they have for this movie is bonkers:
Cillian Murphy (of course), Emily Blunt, Robert Downey Jr., Matt Damon, Florence Pugh, Josh Hartnett, David Krumholtz, Alden Ehrenreich, Rami Malek, Dane DeHaan, Kenneth Branagh, Tony Goldwyn, Harry Groener, Josh Peck, Alex Wolff, and Gary Oldman! *And this all off the top of my head, I’m sure I missed some*
Robert Downey Jr. is phenomenal. I know we’re a long way from the Oscars, and who knows what is going to happen with the strikes (hopefully the writers and actors getting what they want), but I want him to be nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Obviously, it’s very early, but I’d be very happy if he won. His performance shows us what we’ve been missing with him playing Iron Man for so long...and he’s great as Tony Stark, but I’m glad he’s able to move on and do more work like this, because damn, he’s good in this movie.
And I have to talk about Cillian Murphy. He carries this movie on his back, and he is fantastic. There’s a lot of scenes where he is just sitting there...thinking...and you are so engrossed.
And I have a little side tangent about him for a sec...about halfway through the movie, someone was speaking offscreen...and the voice sounded familiar, but I couldn’t place it...and after a minute I thought “ROBIN WILLIAMS?!” Now, it wasn’t him, of course...it was actually Cillian Murphy...but the vocal choice he made for this movie actually made him sound a lot like older Robin Williams...like from the late 90′s/early 2000′s. It was so uncanny, it actually took me a while to stop hearing it.
Anyway...this movie is fantastic and absolutely needs to be seen on a big screen! The sound design alone is worth the price of admission.

J. Robert Oppenheimer was certainly one of the more complex men – with one of the more complex legacies – in modern history.
He was a scientist who believed in the sanctity of life, and yet his greatest discovery is forever linked to massive death. He was called both a war hawk and a communist, but in this film, he refers to himself as a New Deal Democrat. He created the most awesome weapon in American history (at the time), but he apparently sincerely hoped the specter of nuclear Armageddon would stop people from using it.
His invention of the atomic bomb certainly put an exclamation point on the end of World War II, and yet as Oppenheimer points out, it may not have even been necessary. Hitler was dead, Germany had fallen, and the Japanese were teetering. Chances are good they would have surrendered even without having two of their cities annihilated. (Oppenheimer actually tried to talk Harry S. Truman out of using the bomb on Japan, feeling that just the knowledge that it was there may be enough of a deterrent.) He spent much of his later life trying to protest the use of his greatest achievement.
He was a loving, doting husband and also a total womanizer. He was a good friend and at the same time he was rather self-involved. He became a scientific celebrity, but he was an intensely private man who rather hated the spotlight. He was a mostly non-political man who became entangled in several political morasses. He had passionately held beliefs, but he often was unwilling to fight the injustices going on around him, simply hoping against hope that the people on the other side would come to their senses. And he always overestimated the intrinsic good in people.
It perhaps makes a certain amount of sense that the film about Oppenheimer’s life would be helmed by Christopher Nolan, a similarly complex character. Nolan is a brilliant filmmaker (The Dark Knight, Inception, Memento), but not always all that good as a storyteller (Interstellar, Tenet, Batman Begins).
Well, with Oppenheimer, Nolan has one hell of a story to tell. It’s smart, thought-provoking, tragic, and intensely timely even decades after the action took place. And even though the film runs a little bit long (three hours!) and has occasional slow patches, it is quite probably Nolan’s best film.
Based on the Pulitzer Prize–winning 2005 biography American Prometheus by Kai Bird and Martin Sherwin, Oppenheimer takes a measured, scientist’s perspective to the life and times of a flawed but basically brilliant man. From his youth in university, through the Manhattan Project and his later time as an advocate against nuclear proliferation, Oppenheimer flips back and forth through the years and history, putting a microscope on a man who probably never totally wanted the scrutiny.
Framed around an attempted political takedown of the scientist in his later years, Oppenheimer is both a courtroom drama and a truly inspired celebration of science, both its good and bad aspects.
Along those lines, know going in that Oppenheimer is not going to dumb things down for mass consumption. It is often talky and takes on complicated scientific and philosophical concepts and respects the audience enough to assume that they will be able to keep up.
Oppenheimer is a thoughtful, intelligent and gorgeously shot snapshot of our recent history. Do not be surprised to see a lot of this film on Oscar night next year.

Behind the scenes of “Graduation Day pt1&2″
During the original airing of Graduation Day Part 1, the first trailer for Angel was shown. It lasted only four seconds with David Boreanaz turning towards the camera and the words "Angel. This Fall" appearing.
Joss was actually writing the script for this episode and the next while they were shooting the episode. Harry Groener, the Mayor says this:
“For the last two episodes, we didn’t have a script. We were given synopses at the end of the evening about what they were going to film the next day. But no words, no script, no anything. They just said, “Come on in, and when we have it, we’ll give it to you…I’ve always had a script. There’s never been just a synopsis. You go to work, you get ready to work. What Joss was doing was actually writing it as we were traveling getting there. And we’d wait. Finally, they’d say, “we have the first scene.” You’d get the scene; then you’d go and rehearse it. They’d light it. And while they were lighting it or rehearsing it, Joss was over there in the corner on the set, literally over in the corener, writing the next scene. You think, well, that I’ve never seen before. You’re amazed that that can happen, especially now when you have a room full of people deciding on one little thing. That’s fascinating.”

'...06. Oppenheimer (2023)
Runtime: 3 hr., his longest film to date.
Press Release: J. Robert Oppenheimer was a world-renowned physicist whose most infamous creation changed the world. He also had a complicated personal life, more connections to the Communist Party than the American government would like, and a habit of pissing the wrong people off. This is his story… but don’t call it a biopic.
Cast: Cillian Murphy, Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh, Matt Damon, Robert Downey Jr., Josh Hartnett, Casey Affleck, Rami Malek, Kenneth Branagh, Benny Safdie, Dylan Arnold, Gustaf Skarsgård (yes, the brother of the others!), David Krumholtz, Matthew Modine, David Dastmalchian, Jack Quaid, Josh Peck, Dane DeHaan, Alden Ehrenreich, Jason Clarke, James D’Arcy, Tony Goldwyn, Alex Wolff, Scott Grimes, Matthias Schweighöfer, Christopher Denham, Gary Oldman, Harry Groener, James Remar, Tim DeKay, James Urbaniak… Name a white male actor, and he’s probably on this list.
“Yeah, But Is Michael Caine In It?”: Tragically no — at this point, it seems that within the Nolan-verse, the role of Paternal Voice of Reason has been passed down from the semi-retired icon to Kenneth Branagh. (Okay, yes, Branagh was the bad guy in Tenet, but he was a smart bad guy.) Oppenheimer gives Branagh a few meaty scenes as Niels Bohr, a stabilizing presence in chaotic times. (Physics pun only vaguely intended.)
Career Charge: Given the size of the cast, it’s not shocking that there’s a lot to talk about here. This is Cillian Murphy’s sixth collaboration with Nolan, and it’s going to be fascinating to see how this incredible spotlight for his talents affects his career going forward. He certainly seems like a shoo-in for all the Lead Actor nominations come awards season, and deservedly so, as he brings such a depth of understanding to the role.
In addition, David Krumholtz announces loudly that his skills as a character actor have never been sharper. And while Josh Hartnett isn’t a name that’s come up a lot lately over the past few years, but the former teen heartthrob draws a lot of well-deserved attention for his steady work as Francis Lawrence, Oppy’s cautious collaborator. Let this just be the beginning of the Hartnett-sance!
Finally, congratulations, Robert Downey Jr., on your upcoming Oscar for Supporting Actor. It’s well-deserved.
Best Shot: Cinematographer Hoyte van Hoytema uses such an elegant eye to capture the full might of the Trinity test, a spectacle of light that brings with it both awe and dread. Yet of all the shots from this sequence, it’s the one below which deserves special consideration: A man gazing directly at the destruction he hath wrought, rendered almost inhuman by his protective goggles and the burning light. If one shot sums up the film as a whole, it’s this one.
Bathroom Breaks Are For the Weak: Whether you’re in the theater or at home, three hours is a long time to spend away from the facilities. But in no way should you consider stepping outside or hitting pause before the completion of the Trinity Test, at the very least. To do so would mean interrupting the film’s steady momentum towards its most anticipated moment, the long-awaited fireworks factory (quite literally) — you don’t realize how intensely you’re waiting for the moment until it hits you all at once.
After that point though, though… might be an okay time to take a quick break.
Analysis: There’s one moment towards the beginning of Oppenheimer that always makes me think to myself, “J. Robert Oppenheimer has to think about his entire life before he testifies.” But beyond that one moment, it’s impressive how well Nolan dodges biopic tropes to create something that borrows from multiple genres — but only the best bits. Its greatest magic trick isn’t the Trinity test, after all, but the way it elegantly shifts into political thriller mode, complete with a worthy villain.
Its pacing deserves some debate, especially because that aforementioned gear shift has its compelling points, but there’s a real danger of exhausting the audience. However, this approach to the material is more fascinating the more times you see it, with Nolan putting everything he has into examining systems of power, and what it means to be terrified by your own creation...'

The complete ‘Buffy the Vampire Slayer’ on Hulu and Prime Video
Buffy the Vampire Slayer: Complete Series (1997-2003) was TV’s most unlikely pop-culture phenomenon since The X-Files. It is a series with humble beginnings (the movie, starring Kristy Swanson, was a minor cult hit and a critical failure), a tongue-in-cheek title, and a premise that reads like a comic book. So how did a snappy fantasy about vampires, demons, and a high school cheerleader born to…

I love it when the same actors appear together in multiple shows. Like in Buffy, one of you is a vampire with a soul intent on fighting evil in an attempt to atone for your own past evil and the other is the semi-immortal town mayor trying to ascend to pure demon form. But in Bones, they're an FBI agent and LA plastic surgeon. And that in itself is funny. But what's funnier to me is that there are actually some valid character comparisons to be made, here.

Battle of the Sambre
A 1920 depiction of the scaling of Le Quesnoy by troops from the New Zealand Rifle Brigade.
November 4 1918, Le Quesnoy--The general Allied offensive extended south from Valenciennes on November 4, as British and French armies attacked across the Sambre-Oise canal on a thirty-mile front. While the canal was a significant natural obstacle, the German line behind the canal had been hurriedly improvised. A German regimental history noted that:
The whole position consisted of rifle-pits connected up irregularly. There were no dug outs. There was no field of view owing to hedges, houses, walls and gardens. The battle headquarters were in small cellars, hardly splinter proof. In these inadequate positions weakened and used up troops awaited the attack of an overwhelming enemy.
The Allied attack began with a hurricane bombardment at 5:45 AM, with the infantry attacking five minutes later as the bombardment moved back. In many places, the Allies made quick progress. In others, however, the Germans mounted a fierce resistance, pouring fire onto British soldiers and engineers as they attempted to swim, boat, or construct bridges across the canal. In one such instance, the famed poet Wilfred Owen was killed on the banks of the canal, just a week before the armistice.
Nevertheless, the Allies were able to make a general advance that day of over two miles--in some places stretching up to five. To the north, New Zealanders took the medieval town of Le Quesnoy after crossing the moat and scaling the town’s walls with a single thirty-foot ladder. The New Zealand Division took over 2500 prisoners that day, a fourth of the total Allied haul.
The sudden fall of the Sambre-Oise canal convinced General Groener (Ludendorff’s replacement) that the German army needed to retreat to the Meuse-Antwerp position. Although little better-developed than the lines the Germans had been using so far, it had the advantage of being much shorter, allowing the Germans to consolidate their rapidly-shrinking force. He had been reluctant to issue such orders previously, as the railroad networks east of the Meuse were poor, which would make it difficult to move supplies and reinforcements to where they were needed--but by November 5, he had little choice. In the final week of the war, warfare on the Western Front turned into a general pursuit.
