Human Rights Watch: The acquittal last week of a former Army general for the 2006 abduction and torture of two brothers highlights the persistence of impunity for enforced disappearances in the Philippines.
Moments after the verdict, Raymond Manalo faced reporters outside the court in Bulacan province and wept openly. Manalo had alleged that he and his brother Reynaldo were kidnapped and tortured by then Maj. Gen. Jovito Palparan and his men in 2006. Manalo’s earlier testimony had helped convict Palparan in 2018 for the enforced disappearance, torture, and rape of students Karen Empeno and Sherlyn Cadapan in 2006. They remain missing. Palparan is serving a 40-year prison term.
The recent verdict came on the heels of a number of abductions of activists in locations throughout the country. On September 29, unidentified men took activists Lee Sudario and Norman Ortiz in Nueva Ecija province. On September 23, alleged soldiers seized activists Job Abednego David, Peter del Monte, and Alia Encela in Oriental Mindoro province; the military claims they were communist New People’s Army (NPA) rebels but has provided no information on their whereabouts. All five remain missing.

Para Sa’yo Canjie
Back when I was in elementary, may feelings na ako for you.
Naging mag classmate tayo mula grade 1 to grade 3.
Even teacher nga e nagkaka crush sayo.
You’re cute naman kasi talaga. But that makes you more manly now.
As for me, the color of your skin attracted so many girls and gays. You’re oozing with so much testosterone.
Nagpipigil. Nagtitimpi.
Bawal daw kasi.
I’m not going to talk about your fantasy or biological desire as a man.
Nakipag communicate ako with my cell leader. Sinabi ko sa kanya ang lahat. Then nakabalik ako sa cell namin.
That time, marami akong nakwento sa cell leader ko.
Sige. He’s cool naman pala.
I denied it.
I’m a kind of person pa naman who always find ways to get even.
Sa pag fi-feeling ko, ako pa nagka atraso kina Kuya Audie at Kuya Ton. Pati kay Jeremy.
Kaya nga nabadtrip din sakin si Jem. Napaka mautak ko raw sa pera. Nalugi kayo.
I do apologize for that one. I'm sorry alam ko namang bullshit.
Buti nalang talaga Can, mabubuting tao kayo.
They don’t understand me. Iyong pagiging mapilit ko. Kasi nga may pagka Choleric ako.
Never akong nagpatalo sa’yo, Canjie.
It makes more sense.
You asked me kung saan na ako nagta trabaho. Pero I have to be honest with you na hindi na ako kinikilig noon sa’yo.
That time kasi may ibang nagpapakilig sakin.
Can, wala akong balak landiin ka.
No pretentions. No hidden agenda. Only pure friendship. Kaya nga I am thankful dahil tinanggap niyo ako regardless of being sarcastic at puro optimistic kayo.
Hindi man tayo pareho nang kinikilalang Diyos but I am very happy and thankful na hindi niyo ako hinusgahan.
Naniniwala ako sa horoscope at sobrang against yun sa doctrine niyo dahil as per Ptr. Occult practices daw kasi iyon.
I beg to disagree.
Pati iyong heart like a child na meron ka. A man after God’s own heart.
Baon ko iyong mga magagandang traits na meron ka and I will always keep that forever.
Muli Salamat at gaya nga ng lagi mong sinasabi MABUHAY KA HANGGAT GUSTO MO.

San Juan enters MPBL finals
#PHnews: San Juan enters MPBL finals
MANILA – San Juan Knights booked the first seat in the Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League (MPBL) Finals after trouncing Makati Super Crunch, 131-54, in the long-awaited resumption of the playoffs at the Subic Bay Gymnasium on Wednesday night.
Exactly a year after the league last played before the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic went full-blown in the Philippines, the Knights put up a historic performance against a heavily undermanned Super Crunch squad.
With most of the key players not around due to a reported management issue, Makati, which only brought in exactly five homegrown players including former University Athletic Association of the Philippines star Edwin Asoro and professional dunker David Carlos to the Subic bubble, struggled against the full force San Juan, which even got to bring back NLEX player Mike Ayonayon to finish his MPBL stint.
The Knights opened the game on a 15-0 run, and the Super Crunch only got to break the ice at the 5:40 mark of the first quarter on a Bhabap Sta. Maria field goal.
It was essentially San Juan's show all game long as the team's 77-point winning margin set an MPBL record for the most lopsided victory, eclipsing Bacoor City's 109-56 rout of Parañaque during the regular season back in 2019.
John Wilson led the Knights with 22 points on 9-of-11 shooting, six rebounds, four assists, and two steals in just 18 minutes of play.
Jhonard Clarito added 20 points, 13 rebounds, four assists, and two blocks off the bench.
Ayonayon, who was cleared by the PBA to make an MPBL return, added a triple-double of 10 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists with one block.
Asoro led the Super Crunch with 21 points, two rebounds, one assist, four blocks, and one steal.
San Juan will have to wait a little longer before they can determine their opponent in the national finals as the South Division final between Basilan (and Davao Occidental has been postponed due to a suspected Covid-19 case within the Basilan camp.
Early troubles
Trouble marred the MPBL bubble right before it even started after the league confirmed earlier in the day that a member of the Steel was tested positive for Covid-19.
The MPBL did not disclose who the player was, but they placed Basilan in isolation.
"We are under seven days quarantine," head coach Jerson Cabiltes said.
The Steel will all be retested next week, and those tested negative might be able to take on the Tigers in their knockout game, which has been moved to next Wednesday.
'Small victory'
Despite being on the wrong end of what would be the biggest blowout in Philippine basketball at least in recent memory, Carlos said the Super Crunch fought until the end.
"Sa amin accomplishment na 'yon. Small victory na 'yon dahil kaming lima lumaban kaming united (For us it is an accomplishment. It is considered a small victory because we all played united)," he quipped. Nag-zone kami the whole game (Even if we do not like the result, we still did our game plan. We did not keep pace with them in the running game. We played zone defense the entire game)."
He then said that he is dedicating the game to the "Makatizens".
"Ginawa namin ito para sa mga taga-Makati, para matapos namin on a high note 'yung liga (We did this for the Makati residents so that we can finish the league on a high note)," Carlos said.
Henry Subido, who was named Makati's interim coach before the game, commended Carlos, Asoro, Sta. Maria, Carlo Lloren, and Kako Morales for the gallant stand despite the insurmountable odds.
"Malaking bagay na inilaro pa nila 'yung game considering na five players lang sila (It is a great thing that they still played the game considering that there are only five players in the team). It speaks a lot about their character," the Super Crunch mentor said. "They did a great job for sacrificing a lot knowing that they'll be playing na sila-sila lang (all by themselves)."
Even the Knights could not help but be amazed by the Super Crunch's heart.
"Credit din sa lima ng Makati. Mahirap maglaro ng lima lang ah! 'Yung pace pa namin takbuhan (Credit goes to the Makati five. It is hard to play with only five players! All the more that we like to hasten the pace)," Ayonayon said.
Kulang lang sila pero 'yung sa effort nakita namin na gusto rin talaga nila maglaro at manalo (Thank you to Makati and to its players who still showed up. They may be undermanned, but based on their efforts, we observed that they also wanted to play and win)," added Knights coach Randy Alcantara.
But he is also aware that they have a job to do.
I told the players not to look at who we are facing. The players showed that they did not relax, and they still put up an effort to show that it is really a convincing win)," Alcantara said.
Meanwhile, former Makati coach Beaujing Acot, who still joined the team in the bubble but as a consultant now, still got to thank his team's key players despite not making it to the Metro Olongapo area.
"Very proud ako sa inyo (I am very proud of all of you). I know you deserve to be here. Everybody deserves to be here but there are things I cannot control. We also have to understand I'm just an employee also," Acot said. (PNA)

Andal,Joshua. The one with the cleanliest writing and notes. Thank you for being part of the B'nights + 1, even though you don’t know the meaning of our name and sometimes we depend on you. I like whenever you dance, I can see the determination in your eyes specially on contests.
Andrade,Cj. My another seatmate, thank you for the shared thoughts. And even though I don’t like your attitude sometimes or leaving me in our table,I still thank you for helping me for some things.
Antonio,Andrew.  You can be weird sometimes or it’s just that I don’t understand what you are doing. But thank you for the shared knowledge and memories since elementary.
Bacud,Kenneth. Sometimes you say things we consider harsh but those words will make you realize what you did or see what’s wrong. Anyway, thank you for the jaw-aching jokes you share with us everyday,Director.
Ballad,Ronnie. You are one of the funniest in the class, you effortlessly make us laugh. I will never forget your white hair.
Castillo,Laurence. Learn to lower your pride sometimes, it’s not good already. I like how straightforward you are but sometimes you need to think before you speak and stop sleeping on the floor. It’s ok if you’re not an ARMY anymore, you’re not a big deal. You can fanboy on WANNA ONE but remember they’ll disband soon.
Cusipag,Freidrich. I envy you and Jemarie because of how you memorize lessons. Maybe you could give me some tips. Tell me also how your height grew higher in a year.
Dayrit,Karlos. We’re classmates since elementary but I still seldom hear your voice. Don’t be shy anymore. Speak up when you want to say something, I know there are a lot.

Maguddayao, Ryan Ramde. We’re classmates since grade 1 except grade 7 but we still didn’t talk much. Well I still thank you for everything.
Malana, Kharl Emil.  You are clingy but it’s ok I’m already used to it. I really like your company and you are easy to approach. Stay as a easy-going guy but you should sometimes get serious. And I hope you now have a concrete decision about the path you’re taking for your future.
Mallillin, Jonard. You maybe pabebe, i don’t care because i’ve been friends with Yran for three years so im already immune. But don’t change. If that’s what you are, just stay like that. I envy you because of your body, I wish soon I will that kind of body too.
Matammu, John Roe. I admire you for your writing skills. I am also happy that you join us when we invite you to play with us. You are slowly going out your comfort zone. Keep it up.

Villanueva, Kliff Yran. Just like Christelle, we are part of different squads but in the end the three of us are still together. I hope our friendship will last. I’m glad that you open up to us. When you need someone, I’m here. I’ll listen, all your words make sense anyway.

art in the face of disaster.
Art, in every form, is a source of entertainment and enjoyment. However, its purpose must not be restricted to providing amusement alone. It is also responsible for sparking countless revolutions. Creation of visual language allows the voice of the silenced to be heard. It also accounts to the controlled flow of information; it is the primary means of communication during trying times, like the occurrence of natural disasters.
Paton and Johnston (2017) states in their book “Disaster Resilience: An Integrated Approach” that an artist have the capability to create small changes in the behavior of the system. It means that visual artists can change how elements of the world are perceived. In the case of a disaster, they can utilize the medium of their art to facilitate disaster recovery. It does not only promote courage to rise despite dark clouds, but it also encourages resilience.
Here are 5 paintings and cartoons that portray the role of art during calamities/disasters in the Philippines:
1.      After the Storm by Aldy Aguirre
Tumblr media
AFTER THE STORM, ALDY AGUIRRE, 2015 – 2015, From the collection of: Center for Art, New Ventures & Sustainable Development (CANVAS)
This artwork depicts how Filipinos always remain positive even during tragic incidents. No matter how many houses are destroyed after strong typhoons, we still manage to hold each other tightly for assurance that we are strong enough to get up and start another day with a smile.
2.       Ang Yabang Pinoy by Pio Mallari
Tumblr media
ANG YABANG PINOY, PIO MALLARI, 2015 – 2015, From the collection of: Center for Art, New Ventures & Sustainable Development (CANVAS)
“May angas. May yabang,” is often said by Filipinos to increase their hopes and bravely face each storm that comes their way.
3.       Thrive by Rovi Jesher Salegumba
Tumblr media
THRIVE, ROVI JESHER SALEGUMBA, 2015 – 2015, From the collection of: Center for Art, New Ventures & Sustainable Development (CANVAS)
·         Portrayed in the art is the resilience possessed by Filipinos. It shows a calm and composed woman holding a white dove and a flower in bloom. The former represents serenity, while the latter symbolizes the ability of Filipinos to thrive amidst disasters.
4.       The Power of Prayer by Zach
Tumblr media
THE POWER OF PRAYER, ZACH, 2020 – 2020, From the Facebook page of the artist.
·         This unique art negates the idea of using mere resilience and prayers as shields from natural disasters. It gives a glimpse of how Filipinos had to deal with damage of seasonal calamities and the COVID-19 pandemic using only sheer resilience and without proper governance.
5.       by Kenneth I. Bessmonte
Tumblr media
UNTITLED, KENNETH I. BESSMONTE, 2020 – 2020, From the Facebook page of the artist.
·         The recent chain of storms that hit the country had caused the artists to use their skills to reveal the nation’s current situation. The artist expresses his viewpoints regarding the government’s lack of intuition. It shows how the president addressed the effect of the typhoons to his fellow Filipinos that are in dire need of help and proper governance.
In addition to the list above, here are some other art forms that Filipinos created to create an awareness regarding disasters in the Philippines:
1.       Disaster Risk Reduction and Management (DRRM) Song by High School students
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iNT1yS3UCt0
This video shows the essence of understanding disaster awareness. It aims to educate individuals that are vulnerable to disasters. This has reached approximately 37,000 views on YouTube which means that it may have reached a lot of individuals that are uneducated regarding DRRM. Through this song, numerous people are able to take a step towards safety.
2.       Rise Amidst Uncertainty by David Joshua Antonio
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iR-vbttnBDQ
A song by David Joshua Antonio entitled “Rise Amidst Uncertainty” aims to encourage Filipino citizens to rise as one despite different calamities that the country encountered. It also promotes love as the answer to every problem.
3.       Sinag by Jaben Paragsa
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aZaZGOn9dRQ
This song depicts how hopes in every individual rise to form a light despite the darkness. It builds a form of healing and peace. In addition, it also tells the listeners to continue to fight because every battle has an end.
4.       KAPIT: A docu-theatre and live multimedia performance about Yolanda survivors by Issa Manalo Lopez and J Laspuña
Tumblr media
Source: https://www.facebook.com/events/pilar-hidalgo-auditorium/kapit-a-docu-theatre-and-live-multimedia-performance-on-yolanda-survivors/1042923195773095/
This docu-theatre and live multimedia performance dramatizes the experiences of Yolanda/Haiyan survivors and alerts the viewers about the hardships that the underprivileged individuals experience during these trying times.
Aside from the art forms that I have mentioned above, there are also other ways to utilize art during calamities.
One of the ways that art is helpful in turning disasters into an opportunity to give is managing an auction to raise funds for the victims. Last December 12, 2019, Secretary Michael Lloyd Dino has organized an event that exhibits and auctions artworks. According to Saavedra (2019), the said charity fund-raising exhibit has successfully raised P50 million and donated a total of P25 million for the victims of Typhoon Tisoy / Kammuri.
Tumblr media
Source: https://www.pna.gov.ph/articles/1088572
There are numerous other platforms that can be used to exhibit different artworks; the only thing that one needs is the passion and empathy to do it. If adequate number of people acquires enough eagerness to use art to help others that lack proper education concerning natural disasters, the world may be better than the world we are living in today. Regardless of art-making skills, the audacity itself to take bold risks in contributing to the betterment of the world by means of educating more individuals about the disasters that the country experience seasonally is a huge step.
