Louisville BBQ man who was fatally shot when police dispersed crowd used to feed officers for free (CNN) David "Yaya" McAtee and his BBQ joint were fixtures on the Louisville corner where he was fatally shot as police and the Kentucky National Guard dispersed a large crowd early Monday. McAtee, 53, called the spot "one of the busiest locations in West Louisville," where he had built a steady clientele over the years that included local cops his mother said usually ate for free. It was a popular outdoor eatery he had dreamed of turning into a restaurant. His mother, Odessa Riley, said McAtee was "trying to make an honest dollar to take care of his rent and his bills. And they gonna shoot him down like a dog." Here's what we know about David McAtee and how he died: Police say they returned fire after being fired upon Chief Steve Conrad was fired after officials discovered two of his officers involved in McAtee's shooting had not activated their body cameras. "This type of institutional failure will not be tolerated," Louisville Mayor Greg Fischer said Monday. McAtee was shot as police and National Guard members tried to disperse a large crowd, according to police, who said officers returned fire after being fired upon. The city has a dusk-to-dawn curfew after nights of protests. The #LMPD officers, identified as Katie Crews and Austin Allen, are on administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting. Crews joined the police department in February of 2018. Allen joined in February 2016. The National Guard members have not been identified. Police and #NationalGuard units around 12:15 a.m. early Monday were sent to clear a large crowd in the parking lot where McAtee sold his BBQ at his stand. "Officers and soldiers begin to clear the lot and at some point were shot at," Conrad told reporters. "Both LMPD and National Guard members returned fire. We have one man dead at the scene." Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said state police were investigating McAtee's death. I know I don’t have any kind of social media platform, but I wanted to distribute footage of what is actually going on during these protests to the few people that will see this. This was a PEACEFUL protest in #Boston yesterday. The news is only covering the riots, and even their reach is limited as so many journalists and reporters are being attacked and arrested. Please spread this content of what these protests looked like before white people brought in the violence. Last night the cops destroyed their own squad car so POC could take the blame. White boys did the vandalizing while POC begged them to stop. The cops closed the trains as protestors were trying to peacefully disperse and then started shooting tear gas and rubber bullets into the contained crowd.

Like so many people, I am angry. But as a white person I have the privilege to be angry without fear for my life. White people, it is important for us to speak up too. Give space for Black voices, but spread yours as we are more likely to be listened to. This is not a Black struggle, this is humanity’s struggle. We are ALL in this. To not act is to be complicit. Complicity allows this injustice to perpetuate. Complicity itself is an act of violence. White people: get uncomfortable. Put in the work. Donate, speak out, show up. And don’t stop once the hashtags stop trending.

Living in southern Indiana Louisville is our closest city. I consider them our neighbors. David McAtee was loved and he gave love to everyone. He fed police officers out of his pocket at his table and they returned his kindness by murdering him.

Still so much energy in #Louisville, Kentucky the last several days: #BreonnasLaw passed the Metro Council unanimously 26-0, funeral services for #DavidMcAtee were held, and marches and protests are still taking over streets. This intersection is blocked by demonstrators daily. This city has been though so many changes in the 2 weeks we’ve been here, and yet so many of its issues are unsettled.
