USAF Department program launch of the seventh mission of the X-37B spacecraft

The U.S. Air Force Office of Rapid Capabilities Department, in partnership with the United States Space Force, is scheduled to launch the seventh mission of the X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle on December 7, 2023 from the Kennedy Space Center, Florida.

Mission 7 of the X-37B will be launched for the first time on a SpaceX Falcon Heavy rocket, designated USSF-52, with a wide range of test and experimentation objectives. These tests include the operation of the reusable space plane in new orbital regimes, the experimentation of future space domain recognition technologies and the investigation of the effects of radiation on materials provided by NASA.

"We are excited to expand the range of the X-37B's reusable capabilities, using the flight-proven service module and the Falcon Heavy rocket to perform several cutting-edge experiments for the Air Force Department and its partners," said Lieutenant Colonel Joseph Fritschen, Director of the X-37B Program.

The X-37B Mission 7, also known as OTV-7, will expand the United States Space Force's knowledge of the space environment, experimenting with future space domain recognition technologies. These tests are essential to ensure safe, stable and secure operations in space for all domain users.

Head of Space Operations, General B. Chance Saltzman hailed these experiments as "innovators," saying: "The X-37B continues to equip the United States with the knowledge to improve current and future space operations. Mission 7 of the X-37B demonstrates the commitment of the USSF to innovation and the definition of the art of the possible in the space domain."

The NASA experiment on board will expose plant seeds to the hostile radiation environment of long-term spaceflight. Known as "Seeds-2", the experiment will be based on the success of previous experiments, paving the way for future manned space missions.

Previously, Mission 6 of the X-37B was the first mission to introduce a service module that expanded the capabilities of the spacecraft and allowed it to host more experiments than any of the previous missions. The spacecraft carried the experiment of the Photovoltaic Radio Frequency Antenna Module of the Naval Research Laboratory, which transformed solar energy into radio frequency microwave energy, and two NASA experiments to study the results of radiation and other spatial effects on a sample plate of materials and seeds used to grow food. Mission 6 of the X-37B also deployed the FalconSat-8, a small satellite developed by the U.S. Air Force Academy and sponsored by the Air Force Research Laboratory.

The Director of DAF RCO, William D. Bailey praised the collaborative partnership with the industry, noting: “The X-37B government and Boeing teams worked together to produce a more agile, flexible and adaptive experimentation platform. The work they have done to streamline processes and adapt evolving technologies will help our nation learn a lot about how to operate and return from a space environment."

Here “on Earth,” we pride ourselves on our rich agriculture, our stunning vistas—and our tip-top experimental flight and rocket programs. 

Earth, Ohio, has been consistently named American Astronauts’ City of Choice over Wapokoneta and Dayton, and our beautiful camping grounds and wonderful, active skies attract visitors from all over the state. Pay no attention to the mysterious restricted area in the north of town, the site of a 2147 ecological disaster that left the grounds dangerous and closed to all but the very enigmatic… And never you mind the eerie lights in the night sky that glide without rocket fire and soar without wings—that twinkle in the distance like all different suns and stars... 

Spend time instead relaxing at our new mall! Visit our museum and explore our local history of dazzling pulp fiction. Rent a rocket for a weekend trip to Mars. 

Or, help us welcome our sweet and strange new neighbors who’ve relocated here from the Sunshine State. They’re downright otherworldly, so let’s all give them a warm Earth “hello!”

Hello! Our upcoming science fiction title will be an adventurous, awe-inspiring collection of strange and astonishing tales—or at least we hope it will be! The setting’s many hooks and scenarios have been written to honor iconic pulp fiction staples and provide a truly fantastical but also resonating environment where writers can explore, narrate, and reappreciate daily life on our thrilling wonder planet, Earth. 

On our science fiction site, writers and characters will be encouraged to explore a truly magical life in a truly magical place. We’re interested in character-driven stories, adventures, and mysteries that engage with themes of family, home, hope, fear, and belonging as well as the most marvelous parts of the average day-to-day in the new fifties: hovercars, super microwaves, jet pack injuries, retirement rockets, and more.

And of course, the city of Earth will not just be populated by mankind and its many wonders—it will also be home to many different beings from many different worlds, journeys, and futures of their very own. Beings made and loved by you, the writers! And we can’t wait to meet them.

Here, we fundamentally believe that there’s no such thing as a normal, non-marvelous life. Have your character investigate the strange quarantine zone in the center of town that evicted a whole neighborhood ten years ago. Or let them be a part of the buzzing, flight-filled skies. They can visit the many different sights and sounds of the touristy Solar System—or they can discover that life or love wasn’t what they thought it was—that it was something so much more beautiful and strange … and perhaps gooier than they expected. These and many other subplots will be available to you at our upcoming title—plus, all of your own ideas, too! 

In the small, sparkling city of Earth, Ohio, where The Golden Age of Science Fiction is revered and preserved, we don’t think it will be very long at all before the people of Earth find themselves resembling their favorite fantasies and mysteries. And that’s exactly what we’re going for.

Sierra Nevada completes high-altitude intelligence balloon test for UK military

The U.S.-based defense technology company Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) completed the first demonstration of the rapid-deploy high-altitude balloon (HAB), completing the launch, mission performance and recovery of the unmanned platform for stratospheric communications and intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR).

The flight was a critical part of the contract for the evaluation phase of flight 1 of the Aether project of the UK Ministry of Defense.

"We are very pleased with the successful results of this demonstration," said Tim Owings, executive vice president of the Mission Solutions & Technologies (MST) business area at SNC. "NS has extensive experience working with researchers and industry in high-altitude C5ISR technologies and this demonstration simply reinforces our commitment to providing superior development, integration and deployment services to customers around the world."

The demonstration of SNC flight 1 was launched from Page, Arizona, carrying out station maintenance missions before making the transition to the northeast in several states to more urban environments.

The next phase of demonstrations will include a 60-day test flight, the company said.

HAB solar panels and batteries provide the energy needed to integrate larger payloads, expanding mission opportunities and improving available mission resources. It is also able to operate uninterruptedly, exploring the natural speed and directional diversity of stratospheric winds. SNC says it performed all stratospheric operations beyond the line of sight and recovered the payload by the duration and altitudes defined by the Aether program office.

The Aether Project will meet the need of the UK Ministry of Defense for ultra-persistent and quickly manoeuvrable wide area communications ?? and ISR for long-term missions with minimum refueling or maintenance efforts.

“Our team is very excited to work with the UK Ministry of Defense on this project,” said Bill Leonard, senior program director of the MST business area at SNC. "SNS has considerable experience with these high-altitude platforms and collection systems 'lighter than air'. We are confident that our HAB meets and exceeds the mission requirements of our British customer, as well as other SNC partners around the world."

SNC is a partner of Sierra Nevada Corporation Mission Systems UK (SNC MS UK), World View Enterprises, Inc. and Digital Receiver Technology, Inc. for the project.
