So I juiced the Archivist’s opening speech in s5e4 and a couple of other comments made about the Kral Zera and figured I’d toss ‘em into a post for your worldbuilding Kral Zera needs.
At the time s5e4 takes place, the galra empire has had 33 rulers over a period of 13 millennia. As Lotor is crowned at the end of the episode, this would make him the 34th galra emperor.
“Kral Zera” is both the name of the beacon and the ritual around its symbolic rekindling. Likely, the latter is derived from the former.
Despite knowing of Zarkon’s death, the Archivist does not extinguish the flame until the empire’s leaders are gathered for the Kral Zera to determine his successor. When he does, he does so without touching the flame, merely motioning at it. This may suggest he is a magic user, which would also be reinforced in the similarities between his vestments and Haggar’s.
Lotor casually introduces the Kral Zera as how an “emperor or empress” is crowned. Thus it’s fair to assume that in various points of its history the empire was led by women, enough that this is not considered unusual. Gnov is also considered a legitimate contender to the throne and Ezor entertains the idea of becoming empress herself. However, Haggar’s claim Lotor is unfit for the throne by being half-galra would suggest there have been no mixed race rulers before Lotor, the 34th.
Of the 33 galra emperors preceding Lotor, we have the names of three of them: Brodar, explicitly stated to be the first leader of the empire, “Vrig the Great”, and Zarkon, the 33rd leader. No pronouns or gendered descriptors. Thus the only galra rulers we know the explicit genders of are Zarkon and Lotor, the 33rd and 34th emperors.
While this is mostly conjecture: Vrig’s title would seem to suggest they were a major historical figure and well-regarded. It’s likely that unlike Brodar and Zarkon, mentioned for being the first and most recent rulers, Vrig was mentioned for being perceived as a high point in the galra’s history.
The Archivist states that the Kral Zera has burned since Brodar’s days. Thus Brodar’s forces were likely the ones to take Planet Feyiv. Since Lotor states this was one of the first planets the galra ever conquered, that would seem to imply that the galra as a species and as a culture go back further than the empire specifically- but the galra empire began about the same time the galra achieved space travel.  This would mesh interestingly with Lotor claiming “blood emperor” is a phrase nobody used after the galra were a spacefaring race. It’s possible that before the rise of the Galra Empire as we know it and the practice of the Kral Zera, there was a different process for coronation, involving blood- and this was supplanted by seizing Planet Feyiv and establishing the ritual around kindling the Kral Zera. Further conjecture: the use of Planet Feyiv may have been to specifically acknowledge and show reverence for Brodar and that first conquest of the galra. Moving away from “blood” emperors to flame-ordained emperors could also well reflect a transition within the galra from more conventional biological succession (where a ruler passes their position to their offspring) to an at least ostensibly merit-based system.
If popular theory that the name “Marmora” in “Blade of Marmora” is derived from a historical galra ruler, that would bump the number of named galra rulers to five out of thirty-four (Brodar, Vrig and Marmora, Zarkon and Lotor, in that order, with the only confusion being at what point Vrig and Marmora’s respective reigns fell)
Either way we have at least 29 unnamed emperors and near nothing about two of the four named ones (three, if you count Marmora as a potential ruler) and if you’re at all like me, that is a bountiful worldbuilding buffet lying open before you. Want to pull in characters from other continuities like DDP’s Krai Soltorn, Dharlok, and Lirinska? Vehicle Voltron’s Emperor Zeppo? (Or “Corsair” if you’re more inclined to Dairugger’s original names) Nobody is stopping you. Run through the hills. Frolic. Make up weird historical shit.

I drew my jew character Mizuki, i will soonish buy a Dollfie Dream Pretty Coron to shell her as.
Mizuki is sweet but shy, dispite her horns and tail shes not at all evil. Shes half moon elf and half human + she is nocturnal. She loves blueberrys and yoghurt. She plays the violin and dispite her family encouraging her to play on stage she insists shes bot good enough.
