When the nurse becomes the patient. . . Those who have been around for a while know all about my health journey. The ups and down. The way downs. . . With pulmonary hypertension chest pain can be super scary and very dangerous! I very quickly can go into respiratory distress. . . I, however, am very stubborn. The last place I ever want to be is a hospital as a patient, and will do everything to prevent myself from going. . . Yesterday was no different. I took my inhaler when I felt the tightness and pain, took naproxen to help with inflammation and pain. And laid down with cool water to sip on hoping it would pass and I could sleep. But no. . . After two hours of pain that was excruciating and unable to move without feeling light headed, I decided I was ready to make the trip to emerge. . . When I got there my initial BP was 170/105, and tachycardic at 140bpm. . . Cue blood work, oxygen, ECG and cardiac monitoring. . . I am ok! They got the pain and BP under control after a few hours. Tests all came back within normal limits and I was able to go home. . . It always gives me such a new view when I am on the other side of the curtain- especially as a deaf person. Masks make communication for me very difficult even with my hearing aids in. And why I napped off medication I would turn them off. Then tech and nurses and docs would come in to check on me and I wouldn’t respond to them (because I can’t hear them). Caption: a while back I bought my very first stethoscope for nursing school! It’s a Littmann classic 3. But after a little bit I have realized I have no idea how to use this thing. After a little research I found there’s this app you can download on your phone by using this little code that’s on your stethoscope! The app teaches you a bunch of different things starting with how to assess a patient for lung and heart sounds! You can track your learning and one of the cool things about this app is you can plug in your head phones and listen to different lung and heart sounds. As well as learning the anatomy of the stethoscope. My favourite part of this app is that it actually gives you the opportunity to diagnose different patients. I had no idea about this, so if you didn’t now you do. . . I didn’t know about this, this is super neat! I know a big thing in nursing school for myself and classmates was saying “what does normal sounds like” and getting vague responses from teachers saying just practice the more people you listen to the fast you will know abnormal (adventitious). . . This is neat but it won’t take the serial number from my Littmann 3200 electronic. What’s up with that @3mlittmann? . . I don’t often talk about my deafness and working as a nurse mostly because it doesn’t hinder me or define me. I am not inspirational because I am hard of hearing, it just means sometimes I do thinks differently! . . I use two different stethoscopes for different things, I use a compilot air for phone calls, and remote mic for meetings and sometimes conversations with soft spoken patients. . . Hearing loss in LTC . . Dude I can’t hear you... . . A sentence I use often. Especially right now with masks and the masks with clear patches not being approved for particulate measurements right now, I’m kind of SOL. But I never stop trying or advocating! I wear bilatera hearing aids and they help a lot- but they don’t correct my hearing loss- there are still some pitch ranges I cannot hear! Especially those lovely little old ladies! . . Phone calls are also so difficult, I rely on my wonderful co-worker and patience with Drs who know me to make sure I’m getting all of the correct information. I use my compilot and Rogers Pen often to help as much as they can. . . I ask resident to repeat themselves and I try to repeat what I hear to clarify and ensure we are equally understanding parties! . . I take report in a separate room so I can ensure I’m hearing the best I can! Have another post about being hard of hearing/deaf and nursing! . . This one is a little more about the tools I use, how they work for me, struggles and a whole lot of honesty. . . I have severe sensorineural hearing loss, it’s related to a genetic connective tissue disorder that affects myself and two of my brothers to varying degrees. I wear bilateral behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aids from @phonak, these with the Compilot Air 2 are Bluetooth capable. . . I have and use the @thinklabsmedical One stethoscope, which connects via an auxiliary cable to my com pilot so that the sounds are directly routed to my hearing aids making them much easier to hear and adjust the pitch so it’s better for me- similarly the hearing aids block out background noise so it can focus on assessing what I hear. I use my ThinkLabs One stethoscope in class, during OSCEs and learning opportunities. Unfortunately I find the One Stethoscope to be uncomfortable to use, hard to store/wear, and unrealistic in some clinical situations. I love the sounds it produces but it’s hard to unwind all of the cables, and pull it in and out of pockets when switching quickly between storage and use- especially when PPE gowns are necessary. . . Due to those reasons I also obtained the @3mlittmann 3200 Electronic stethoscope! The sounds are 24 x louder than a regular stethoscope and is Bluetooth capable! I wish it was compatible with @apple products but my lovely fiancé has a windows computer that I can use to view the sounds. This stethoscope makes me feel more “nurse-y”, hangs around my neck, sits in my pocket comfortably, and is more suitable for me in clinical settings, the only down side is I have to pocket my hearing aids (thank the lord for breast pockets) in order to use it. . . Both stethoscopes have their advantages and their places. Working. . . Working while in school is never easy. Working and paying bills while taking on a full course load and placement isn’t easy, but it’s possible. . . I take a lot of pride in my work, dedication, motivation, perseverance, and resourcefulness. . . But even I, sometimes, am tired. Learning self-care is still a struggle with me and one of my goals for 2019 was to get an actual massage- I still have a lot of 2019 left, so hopefully this will still happen. . . Self care is so important, whatever your self care is. @google #docs is my favourite way to take notes in class! . . Being deaf/hard of hearing I often miss what is going on in class- even with all of my technologies and my note-taker. Therefore with a groups of friends we do a #googledoc for each class and paste the class powerpoints content into it so we can annotate together real time to help each other, and use the chat function to ask questions and get answers from each other - including when someone is too timid to outright ask the professor 🙋🏼‍♀️(hello) and someone else can ask. I believe this benefits everyone in the group not just me 😂 . . Why become a nurse when you’re deaf/hard of hearing? . . This is a question I have been asked many times, sometimes out of polite curiosity, sometimes with malicious intent and a scathing perception. . . Why does anyone become a nurse? You’ll often hear “I want to help people”, “I want to make a difference”, “it’s my calling”, I like the adrenaline and science”, and for some it’s a legacy thing where their mom and grandma and so on were nurses. . . For me it’s a little of all of the above. I have a collection of skills I can use to help others, I can sign and help communicate and advocate for patients with hearing loss. I know a ton about hearing aids and their care 😂 so I am resourceful and useful for coworkers who are in a pickle about replacing batteries or configuring issues. I am skilled at catching visual changes, and palpable abnormalities as I rely on my other senses more. I have specialized tools to help my practice and provide the best care. I have both the @thinklabsmedical One stethoscope which hooks up to my @phonak #compilot and allows me to hear lung and heart sounds easily through my hearing aids and I also have the @3mlittmann Electronic stethoscope with Bluetooth capabilities to help out as well! . . My new #stethoscope is here! I’m so excited because I really struggle with the inconvenience of the @digitalstethoscopes because it attached to my @phonak steamer it never felt secure and had to stay in my pocket which was frustrating for lab based classes, so the @3mlittmann Electronic 3200 Bluetooth is going to be fantastic as it’s 24 times louder for the #hardofhearing like myself!
